Amazon.com essential recording
The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

Simply beautiful.......2007-01-11
Out of Africa is a CD with beautiful music. When I listen to it, I imagine myself in the nature of Africa. You will enjoy it!
CD has missing track.......2006-12-03
John Barry's compositions are pleasantly sweeping. There's nothing wrong with this album, just not really enough to recommend it.
I was puzzled to learn that some time between my buying the LP record and the issuing of this CD, the track "The Music of Goodbye (love theme from Out of Africa)" was omitted. It's not that this song, sung by Melissa Manchester, is a must-have; it's more that it's sneaky to leave off tracks when you reissue a soundtrack in another format.
Disappointed.......2006-11-10
I absolutely love the music from Out of Africa, but I do not recommend this CD at all. The sound quality is so poor that I could only bear listening to it once.
Worth Buying!.......2006-11-06
Highly recommended for those who love instrumental music. A lot of beautiful flute, strings and some piano and harp. Very contemplative and hauntingly beautiful music.
Great Album.......2006-11-04
For me, one of the best music of last decade. Romantic, full of sense. Please give a listen at least

Save your ca$h money..........2006-11-10
I bought this cd thinking I was going to get early Bury Your Dead material that I had never heard before. I was quite wrong.
Almost everything on this disc is early versions of what shows up on Cover Your Tracks.
The quality is not as good and the musicianship is a bit lacking as well.
This would make a great demo but it's not worth more than $10.00.
I should have bought the live CD instead!!!

Now here is some fiercness, that you can't quite deny, it's Bury Your Dead and it ain't no lie, they can play and they can shout, they are tough don't call them boy scouts, I like to listen to this in the bay, I want to listen to it every day, I love you guys, but what the hell is up with that live album that is in the works YOU PUT OUT TWO RECORDS!!! Why are you putting a live album out with only two records, I'll tell you why, Victory lost the rights to re-release You Had Me at Hello and called you guys up "hey if you want to stay on the Victory roster you better make us a live album and stop selling those crazy bury your f***ing dead hoodies." So, BYD had to oblige thier record label. I think it's really lame that Victory had these guys do a live album only TWO records deep into their career, I mean in my eyes there should be two critera for a live album:
A) at least six years of tour expierence (I think BYD has only had 3)
B) more than 3 full length records under the bands belt
BYD does not meet those requirments, ugh, jelousy VIctory, jelousy. Anyways, yeah this album is awesome, Eulogy ended up grabbing the rights to this, as opposed to evil Victory making more money a righteous and half way decent label got that right hurray for the little guys! I don't know what to say about this album that hasn't already been said about me (as in awesome and tubular) but I guess you all know what to expect here, heaviness, breakdowns and mosh-tastic (oh I'm so lame!) music and lame ass Victory didn't get thier grubby paws on it, a plus! V.R.S! (Victory Records Suck!)
hear where it started for these guys.......2005-05-27
We travel back a bit with a re-issue of BURY YOUR DEAD'S debut release, "You Had Me At Hello", courtesy of Eulogy Recordings. If you read the review of their 2004 Victory Records release, "Cover Your Tracks" then you are aware of how impressive their music was and what we have here in their debut is just an extension of that even though we are backtracking a little. When you compare the two albums you can hear some of the changes they made to their metallic hardcore sound. Specifically within the clarity and creativity with regards to their teeth shattering, hardcore banging breakdowns. "You Had Me At Hello" displays their earlier stages of destruction and it is no less grand than their "Cover Your Tracks" album, albeit slightly more raw and rudimentary. This is not say it doesn't have all the resounding qualities as their Victory release but the differences are still there and they tended to communicate a thoughtful approach to improving their overall sound without swaying away from what makes their vibe so unique. This is crushing metal infused hardcore in the most idyllic of ways similar to HATEBREED and even a smattering of 100 DEMONS except they have tuned their sound in a way that might remind some of CROWBAR. Their thoroughly deepened sound is at the very bottom of the base scale and the double bass work is unbelievably refined. Vocally, the frayed atonal vocals are indubitably aggressive with little or no reprieve on the horizon while the guitars viciously attack your ears with severe chugging and heart-stopping breaks. When you want music that is relentless, charismatic and has a heart of a lion, look no further-BURY YOUR DEAD is the answer. Give props to Eulogy for re-issuing this one. It was a smart move on their part.

English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20
The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.
Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.
This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.
You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09
What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.
The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.
A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17
This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.
I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15
I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.
And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.
The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.
The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.
A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

Damn heavy and mosh pit worthy.......2004-12-15
This music is super aggressive, heavy and groovy. This is like the pride and joy of the tough guy hardcore scene, and believe me if you are a hardcore tough guy you will be windmill punching and kung fu kicking through out this whole CD. These guys make amazing high quality music, the best songs are "Sunday's best", "Ten Minute Romance" and "Mosh n Roll". Ten Minute Romance is a track about how stupid emo music and how emo kids need to get hurt. Mosh n Roll is the best groovy mosh pit song ever I love it I love this band.
BURY YOUR DEAD IS AWSOME.......2004-06-06
This CD is awsome buy it because there heavy quik riffs followed by incredible breakdown make it worth it. TUESDAY NIGHT FEVER is my favorite song i give em 4 stars.
stomping good time.......2004-04-12
They've come a long way from the demo. Better production, more material, a few parts developed, and (I think) a lineup change. Musically, it offers nothing new, sticking with the now tried-and-true formula of: Fast and Heavy, Slow and Heavy, Sing-along, Breakdown. Why fix what isn't broken? No, this'll never satisfy the oldschool elitists, but it's not made for them either. What sets this record apart is the way it hangs on. I've listened to it countless times for months and it's not even close to getting old, even though the music is so simplistic. The emotions, the anger, the frustration comes through in a way that sticks with you. Yes, they really have progressed into a mature, focused unit. This makes it easy to translate the energy from the band to the audience at shows, resulting in some of the most chaotic 'core pits in recent times. If you're looking to work out some aggression, see them live, or hear the CD.
heavy.......2004-02-18
So this band is EXTREMELY heavy. Full of breakdowns, double bass, and low end that will crush your head. But dont get me wrong, they are playing tough-guy hardcore, and it gets very repetitive after a couple of listens. Dont get me wrong on that either, because when youre in the mood to move like a madman they are the perfect band for that. Put on your dancing shoes, and get ready to stomp.
Great CD.......2003-06-11
This CD is nice, heavy and just downright brutal! The mosh never ends. If you like some good tough guy hardcore with killer breakdowns get this album. Only critique is the lyrics. They are a bit cheezy and too much swearing for my taste.
Overall very good.
