Conceptually Intriguing, but Dehumanized Blend of Post-Punk and Art Rock........2007-07-06
On Mirrored Battles synthesizes the ferocity, structural minimalism and experimentation of punk/post punk with the virtuosic musicianship and erudite intellectualism of art-rock. To give you some idea of what Mirrored sounds like, try to imagine the sharp, taut sound of early Wire combined with the musicianship and rigid structural complexity of early 80s King Crimson (Discipline, Beat, Three or a Perfect Pair) presented in an ultra-modern (futuristic?) digitally processed format. If that seems difficult to wrap your brain around, well, it is. To me Mirrored sounds sort of like Robots attempting to perform human-sounding music (the vocals are processed, and the lyrics are usually indecipherable).
While Mirrored seems brilliant in conception the reality is only compelling on a detached intellectual level. Battles are intelligent, creative, and technically accomplished, but seem emotionally distant because the emphasis is almost entirely on structure and rhythm; Mirrored has elements of wit, humor, and energy, but is almost completely devoid of recognizable human sentiment. Battles do create unique and compelling grooves on the best tracks (Atlas, Ddiamondd, Leyendecker), but their aesthetic becomes tedious over the course of a 50 min album. Apart from the few distinct songs most tracks are repetitive and interchangeable.
It's evident that Battles have a unique musical chemistry and aesthetic, and their ability to explore seems almost infinite. But their tremendous potential is only partially realized on Mirrored. They must learn to infuse more humanity and more direct emotional zeal into their intriguing structures before they can realize the truly great album Mirrored isn't.
Perfect coordination!.......2007-07-01
Quite simply, this is an astounding record. At first, like many others, I thought to myself, "this isn't the Battles I knew from the EPs, why would they ever take this direction?" but after a few good solid listens I realized how much of a progression this really was for them. Taking some time to go back into the past, I popped in the EP C/B to compare the likes of the two. It's phenomenal. Sure, the added vocals was a little suprise at first but after the initial shock it's obvious they weave nicely with the music and everything progressed along with the addition.
The record starts out with the pump up track "Race: In". From the moment the bass comes in that song it's clear this is an album that can't be listened to in any scattered order (though live the scattered order proved perfect, and if you get the chance, see them!) but rather straight through. There isn't a dull moment in the album from the triumphant Atlas and Tonto to the more mellow Bad Trails, ending with Race: Out as the final blow. With all of the layers and textures in this there is so much to find in every listen.
These guys know what they're doing and are pretty genious but without an open mind and a taste for experimental music you might find yourself craving more of their older music.
What Happened to Battles?.......2007-06-14
I liked the Battles EPs I'd heard - they're one of the most intricate math rock bands around. Which is why this album was so shockingly disappointing. The backing band stays pretty much the same as before, but a top layer of insufferable "Alvin and the Chipmunks"-style "vocals" have been added to the top. Perhaps some people can look past this (or even enjoy it??), but I'm not one of those people. The vocal tracks add nothing to the music and almost completely take away my enjoyment of Battles' precise technical mastery.
Sing this hook.......2007-06-03
To say Battles has their own distinct sound would be an understatement. Some bands are in their own world. Battles is in their own galaxy. A galaxy ruled by mechanical sounding vocals, deep percussion, keyboards that sound like guitars, and guitars that sound like keyboards. It's not quite the Milky Way. It sounds like Turing Machine filtered through a wormhole or something. Really cool, really freaky stuff. And it's the good kind of freaky, not the "weird for the sake of weird" kind. Well, maybe some of it is weird for weird's sake. But it's enjoyable nonetheless.
At first, I wasn't too keen on this. You need to slowly let it tunnel into your consciousness over the course of a few listens. The longer songs (Atlas, Tonto, Rainbow, Tij) are the highlights here, with the other songs seeming more like science experiments as opposed to fully fleshed out songs, with perhaps a couple of exceptions. But those 4 songs, all clocking in at over 7 minutes, are the ones you'll listen to the most when you're not playing through the whole record.
I've played this album for a lot of my friends and none of them seem to know quite what to make of it. Only one flat out told me they didn't like it, but none went nuts over it either. They seemed equal parts intrigued and confused more then anything else. So take that however you want to. All I know is I keep listening to it and enjoying it. It's different, that's for sure. Not for everybody, but I would definitely keep your eye on these fellows either way. I'll never be one to criticize a band for taking chances and doing something different, and Battles is certainly one of those bands.
An Interesting Listen, But It Seems Purely Intellectual .......2007-06-01
I never really got in to the genre called Math Rock. I am a music dork who enjoys listening to all kinds of music on an emotional and intellectual level, but Math Rockers always seem to be purely intellectual and the Battles appear to be no different. They can sure rock the interesting time signatures and the experimental vocoder stuff, but they seem to lack any genuine emotion. I don't really feel much outside of my own head when I listen to Mirrored.
I'm no lover of Math Rock so it's hard for me to really come up with a comparison of what this band sound like but I'll give it a shot. They're kind of a middle ground between electronic music and post punk stuff like Wire. They're very repetitive like electronica but they're also concerned with texture like Wire. They are also very precise which is another characteristic of Wire's later albums. But they're also kind of peppy. The vocals are indecipherable but they sound like a demented version of the It's Small World ride from Disneyland. They also kind of sound like the vocals on The Knife's Silent Shout but not as dark. It's also vaguely danceable, but I couldn't see myself busting a move to this.
What sticks out the most on this album is the drumming. Former Helmet drummer John Stanier adds a really sturdy backbone to the most of these compositions. His drumming not only adds the beat, but it adds a good bit of texture to most of these songs. This album proves how versatile Stanier is. He can do the heavy and brutal drumming from Helmet or the experimental stuff for Battles.
Music can be intriguing on a purely intellectual level. Mirrored is not something I'm liable to listen to on a regular basis, but it's interesting. I would say it's a 3 and a half star album. It really does nothing to affect me on any level outside of my own head, but it's well executed and technically speaking it's very good.

As these dimpled moptops from Oklahoma grow pepper-bearded and transform into wizened elder statesmen of sonic adventuring, the heartfelt candy of their loving bubblegum stretches ever longer into echoing soundscapes. If Radiohead are halfway to becoming U2, the Flaming Lips are nine-tenths of the way to pop nirvana. Hardly a song on Yoshimi isn't resonated, echoed, and reverberated--floating the listener higher until they have the ultimate bird's-eye view of what makes a great band tick. As with any album by the band, it's hard not to imagine parades and a sky filled with helium balloons while you listen to any of it--in this case, the party is enhanced brilliantly by digital filters and silver shimmering asides. The most immediate songs, like "One More Robot (3000-21)," are digital (almost trip-hop) dance numbers that lift the band out of the cornfields and into the loopy land of Björk. Little surprise, then, that the band are already following up this majestic splash of gummy bear brilliance by recording a CD with kids' TV show host Steve from Blue's Clues. It's like Woodstock meets Snoopy! --Ian Christe

But the moment never came..........2007-06-19
that I was disappointed in any track on this album! I haven't had too much exposure to TFL but had to buy this album from having heard "Do You Realize" and seen the album cover and title. Irresistible. I hear something new each time I listen - fave tracks include "Fight Test", "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" and "All We Have is Now". Get it!
Flaming Lips - A Tripped Out Gem.......2007-03-02
Up until a few years ago my only exposure to The Flaming Lips was that horrible single "Vaseline" (or whatever it was called) that got a ton of radio airplay back in the late 90's. I really really really hated that song and totally wrote this band off. Then in early 2003 I kept seeing this "Yoshimi" album pop up on a lot of people's "best album of the year" lists for 2002. After reading reviews and talking to others who had it I finally decided to pick it up and give this band a chance. I can happily say that I am glad I did. This is a fantastic album and one that does not easily fit into any easy categories. The album is a mix of psychedilea, electronica, pure pop, and progressive rock. It is really different from anything else I have in my music collection. The whole album flows together seamlessly in a dreamy floating way. The lyrics tell the loose story of a girl named Yoshimi who is fighting against evil robots. The first four songs pretty much follow the story line and then the material kind of drifts away from it. All of the songs on the album are great from the opening "Flight Test" through the instrumental closer "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon". It is all a tripy fantasy ride that takes the listener to a dreamy sci fi world. I don't own any other Lips albums, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but if I definitely need to explore more from this band.
An Essential Album.......2007-02-19
Never heard of the Flaming Lips, one of rock's most unusual acts hailing from of all places, Oklahoma City, OK? Unbelievably, the band is nearing their 25Th anniversary. Their career is a long storied one, filled with bizarre tales, wildly ambitious projects, and a decent turnover of musicians. The band's sound certainly has changed over the years. While front man and co-founder, Wayne Coyne, says that the Lips are in their final incarnation, that doesn't mean that their genius won't continue on. Wayne, Steven Drozd, and Michael Ivins still have alot to say and they keep finding the most fascinating ways to say it. One could buy any one of the last three lips albums, "Yoshimi," "The Soft Bulletin," and 2006's effort "At War With the Mystics," and have an excellent album on their hands. I'm particularly fond of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.
The Lips music blends addictive pop sensibility, smart earnest lyrics, with a huge assortment of sounds. The music is at the same time overtly psychedelic and tenderly melodic, without ever being abrasive or unfocused. While all the Lips albums are in a sense concept albums, Yoshimi's story and sound could be the most cohesive. It's easy to suggest 911 played a role in the subtext of this album. The same goes for the Iraq war in the equally brilliant "At War with the Mystics." Both albums, despite employing a political subtext, are irresistably catchy. If you've never heard the Lips, Yoshimi's first three songs might be best thing you've heard in years. The story of Yoshimi starts to become more abstract after Pt 2 but the remaining songs are nothing short of genius. One particular highlight is "Do You Realize." The orchestral sound combined with simple, off the cuff, yet surprisingly poignant and heartfelt lyrics is like a dose of the sweetest most heavenly gooseberry pie you'll ever taste. No really. Do You Realize doesn't ask as much from its audience as say, "Imagine," but its bittersweet message is just as grandious.
In a nutshell, The Lips are making some of the most breathtaking music around. If you haven't heard their stuff or seen one of their legendary shows you're missing out big time. Pick it up, the whole family will love the Flaming Lips. I Promise!
Bought this today and I love it and not 13 it's just easier........2006-12-14
It took me a while to delve into the Lips. They are good and great to listen to but they won't surpass Beck on my playlist if the mood calls for Beck. Anyway, I got into the Lips thanks to this wonderful girl I met when I started college. She invited me to her dorm and asked if I heard of the Flaming Lips, I had heard of them at the time but never listened to them. I was amazed at what I was hearing when she put the CD in. This album is just spacey and dreamy, very nice to listen to when you are in a good mood. I bought At War with the Mystics and somewhat liked it, but when said girl loaned me Yoshimi I loved it and made a note to buy it. Overall, very enjoyable and a great album to sing along to with the girls especially Do You Realzie??
good album!.......2006-11-05
I liked it a lot. a combination of soft/hard and electronic/melodic. If you like to flow into thoughts about different worlds it also works very well...

Customer Reviews:
my favorite flaming lips album.......2007-05-22
i am a huge fan of the flaming lips, and i must say that this is my favorite album. i think this is probably the only flaming lips album that is completely perfect. every song on this album is just absolutely amazing. and the dvd disc is awesome, some really good songs on it that you couldnt hear elsewhere. deffinately buy this. id say even if you have this album already, you should still buy this special edition just to hear it in surround, and to hear the bonus songs, its still worth it to buy it again.
Taken a chance here..........2007-04-02
...but it was well worth it. Never heard these guys before, but heard good reviews of this...I mean, come on...pink robots???? But clever lyrics and an astounding 5.1 sound, it really grows on you with time. Now I listen to it to unwind and really love it's fresh sound and Waynes mellow vocals. Very aggressive surround...but quite enjoyable. And this is from a guy who love Bach!
5.1 mix is a bit gimmicky...but still worth it.......2005-06-30
I love the album. And the 5.1 mix is enjoyable. But it strikes me as a bit gimmicky. Sure, it shows off sound coming from every direction, but it doesn't sound natural enough to me. If you read the liner notes that come with the album, for example, you'll see that on one track, they simply move the sound around the room in a clockwise direction. On another the bass moves around on every single note. It's almost like they had some presets they could program in rather than really looking at the music and thinking about what would sound best. Rather it sounds like they're "playing". Not that it's a bad mix. The Lips have a quirky sound, so a slightly quirky mix is not all bad. If something like a Led Zeppelin album were mixed like this, it would be awful. Since it's the Lips, it works okay.
But simply moving the audio around the room quickly or on every note does *not* make an "awesome" mix.
Surround Masterpiece.......2005-06-09
Now this is the reason I have spent so much on surround equipment over the years! This is just wonderful. Summertime and Do You Realize alone are worth the price. Just buy this, you will not be sorry. The guys really know what they are doing, and it's one of my favorite surround recordings to date.
Prepare to be engulfed in the music of the Flaming Lips.......2005-02-22
This is one of those great albums that comes every once a year. A MUST HAVE CD/DVD set. Not only is this a great album, it is also far superior due to the 5.1 surround audio on the DVD. When you listen to this in the 5.1 audio, be prepared, this music will swallow you up and swish you in its mouth. It is AMAZING! You will feel as if you are in another world with spacey sounds, swirling drumkits, crazy synths, oh and of course the Flaming Lips behind it all. This is truly the only way (5.1) to listen to music. AND AN EVEN MORE EXTRA BONUS is the CRAZY ANIMATIONS THAT DANCE TO THE MUSIC on the DVD. Its incredibly mind-blowing to watch and listen. The Flaming Lips have a masterpiece of music and animations on this CD/DVD album. Ear Candy tracks include: "In the Morning of Magicians", "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell", "Fight Test", and "Are you a Hypnotist??".

Groovy but cerebral voiceless experimental rock gift.......2007-03-03
Good starting point in a pretty weak discography seems to be the briefly recorded band's most solid, articulate outing in their weird, playfully menacing style. Players are in high form here, keeping the compelling repetition informed and brisk for anyone interested in the opposite side of your typical jam band. Here the esteemed math-rock compatriots get to flex their considerable self-conscious chops, ushering in the band's renewed interest in the faltering genre. Hopefully these impressive, though essentially glorified, compositional outings will continue to refine and focus both band and fans alike as the obligatory LP hopefully looms around the corner.
Corrections.......2006-04-29
Just to disabuse anyone of the notion that Tyondai lives in Boston and is Toni Braxton's brother (per "A Music Fan"): neither is true. He lives in NYC and is the son of music god Anthony Braxton.
Good and Interesting.......2005-12-28
This short CD is what happens when 3 very talented musicians spend a day screwing around in the studio. You get some flashes of brilliance and a lot of experimenting. All of the album is interesting except the last 3 minutes or so of the last track which is utterly pointless. The first track is great stuff and reminds me of prime Don Caballero. Over-all: good stuff and well worth a listen or two, but not something that lasts.
Live show is AMAZING.......2004-06-24
I saw Battles play twice at the Middle East Club in Cambridge, MA. They put on an incredible live performance. To actually see how they recreate the music you hear on the CD is really something. I can't stop listening to this CD! If you're into intelligent instrumentals, buy this record and everything else they release.
Incredibly Smart.......2004-06-19
Battles blends the genius of guitarist/keyboardist/samplist Ian Williams (Don Caballero, Storm & Stress), drummer John Stanier (Helmet, Tomahawk), guitarist Dave Konopka (Lynx) and Boston-based avant garde composer Tyondai Braxton (ironically the younger brother of pop/r&b singer Toni Braxton). Attempting to draw comparisons to other bands or even genres is pointless and quite frankly unnecessary, because EP C is a truly unique sounding album. The only other music that competes with Battles' abstractly intelligent musicianship and songwriting is Storm & Stress and the later-era Don Cab, both brainchilds of Ian Williams. Which says a lot about where EP C is coming from. But the four individual talents of the members of Battles, when confronted, tread sonic territory that Williams' former efforts have not. The songs add layer upon seamless layer of intricate guitar and keyboard lines (often heavily sampled), fractured rhythms, electronic noises, and sparsely-placed vocal samples, all held together with the tenacious and incredibly tight drumming of Stanier. The production of the album is nearly perfect.
If any point is to be made at all with this review, its that words and descriptions don't really do it justice, you just have to hear it for yourself. Everything about it is just mesmerizing.

Not worth it.......2007-03-03
2 1/2
Terrible gamble for anyone except the biggest fans simply due to the horrible consistency of getting only one track that resembles the exciting qualities inherent with the groups way better work, and another long track that plays like a lazy beat-fest session of uninspired undertaking. Strictly for those familiar and engaged with everything else Battles have put out
Top Form.......2004-11-21
Battles know what they're doing. They didn't come into this deal with that adolescent inexperience and uncertainty of what direction to take. Their former musical projects already have them at the top of their game, and their sound was patented to a tee from the very first recording. I put off buying this EP for awhile; I was wary of 'Fantasy' because of their other underwhelming electronic blip-and-bleat tracks such as 'Uw' and 'Bttls'. As it turns out, the track isn't half-bad, especially on headphones. Also, 'Tras' is probably Battles' most accessible track, with a rock propulsion that makes it instantly palatable. Not a bad buy at all, especially if you already have the other EPs. I can't wait for future releases. Oh wait, I forgot about the 'Tras' video. I was disappointed, because I was expecting a live performance, but instead I got this white-washed recording that reminded me of a Macintosh commercial.
BE CAREFUL!.......2004-10-28
I completely loved EP C. Made me want more BATTLES. HOWEVER, This was NOT quite the ep I was hoping for. The opening track 'Tras' is actually perfect (i love handclaps!)... but the second track, which at over 9minutes i thought would have lots of potential...not so much. Kind of drones on. Not much guitar-work. Would be great if it was part of a larger album maybe. Lets just say that since EP C and this one cost me the same amount....much more bang for the buck going with another album of theirs. Havent' seen the video yet though...maybe that'll take it up to 4stars???

Album Description
Their sophomore release is a mind blowing masterpiece, layered and rhythmic with strict definitions and timing. These four artists were known individually before forming their power quartet, being ex and current members of Don Caballero, Storm And Stress, Helmet, and Tomahawk.

3 1/2
Another impressive, imaginary, instrumental short-track from the heavy experimenters yields impressive, supremely angular enjoyment at it's short-lived best. Sadly the band has not released a certified long-play (which may or may not be a good thing), but even with their chaotically sublime instrumentation, the language often moves into repeated exercise, diminishing with the ep's long formless, anti-jam center. There is still more then enough to warrant solid ground here, with repeated listens revealing more of these full-throttle movements inking out unmapped terrain somehow making all of this aggressive, atypical notation feel fun and relatively accessible. It is just a shame the group will not further flesh out their sound with a thought out full-length.

Praise and Worship Extraordinaire.......2007-03-05
I was amazed at this CD. How did this one slip through the cracks? If you like praise and worship music this is definitely the CD for you. My favorite is "Worthy is the Lamb." Her rendition will put you into a true Holy Spirit state and bring you back to reality in the world of truly who is in control. Several of her other selections will have you up jumping, shouting, and clapping your hands. If you don't believe me just listen to the samples. If you are in touch with your spirit, this CD is for you.

Album Description
One of the harshest, most cataclysmic black metal albums ever recorded - EXTREMELY fast, vicious, and aggressive, tearing at you repeatedly like a rabid pack of ice wolves. Also one of this band's most epic hours, combining Demonaz's incredibly bizarre sense of melody with enough apocalyptic fervor to end the world a dozen times. Absolutely mandatory for those who would consider themselves knowledgeable about the Norwegian black metal scene of the past...if you like their most recent material, listen to this to learn why they have such a good reputation! Beautiful Norwegian art...

Worthy of the Northern Chaos Gods.......2007-05-23
Battles in the North may very well be Immortal's best release. Sure some will say Blizzard Beasts or At the Heart of Winter is better, but this is Immortal at its most aggressive and brutal stage. The blood-curdling pace of Demonaz' guitars and Abbath's standard snarling vocals will make any black metal fan proud.
The only weakness on this album I'd have to say is the drums. While Abbath is a strong drummer, especially on the double bass, his skills are more apparent as a bassist (and guitarist after Demonaz left due to severe arm injuries) and vocalist. Fortunately this problem is solved on the very next album with the introduction of Horgh, a true master of the skins.
A great buy for old school black metal fans, and highly recommended for those Immortal fans more familiar with their later, thrashier style as a testament to what Immortal has been since its incarnation.
Drumming is amazing........2007-04-02
Amazing drumming. This is a wicked good CD with possibly the best and most intense drumming I've ever heard. I definitely recommend this CD to Immortal fans.
Thunder drumming !.......2006-12-29
Originally this was not one of my favorite immortal releases, but it's really grown on me. I can understand people complaining about the production, however in my opinion, it's perfect for the genre, and specifically this release.
The drumming is pretty crazy on this one, and the songs are strong. This has turned out to be one of my favorite Immortal releases, and one of the last releases by them with low-end production.
Extreme Black Metal.......2006-05-11
I have supported these guys since they called themselves OLD FUNERAL(with Varg from BURZUM), and I have to say they have yet to disappoint. With the release BATTLES IN THE NORTH, Immortal proved to live up to their name. This contribution to black metal is fierce, raw, and brutal. Immortal slows down for no one and this CD proves it. If the first song, "Battles in the North," doesn't grab you and throw you to the floor, then you are either hearing impaired or in an eternal slumber. It slashes and cuts and pounds your ear drums and just when you think it is safe the next song starts and you are being brutalized again. Not for the weak or for those who like predictable rhythyms. For fans of DARKTHRONE, RAGNAROK, DARK FUNERAL, and SATYRICON...

Mellow take on the Lips........2007-03-24
This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.
