A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24
Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.
As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.
Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.
I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.
Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23
Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.
The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.
The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)
Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"
Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

How not to........2007-06-18
I am unashamedly fascinated by Colin Newman, and I'm always baffled as to why everybody else in the world isn't. He's such a feisty, intense little character, interesting too, at least to me and a few (unfortunately VERY few!) of his fans.
`Commercial Suicide' (a typical Newman title, good, but bleeding obvious and he DOESN'T CARE!) isn't as good as `Not To'. Not many albums are, but it is very good. The music has been opened out considerably, and some of the arrangements are simply sensational.
The first song, `This Terrain' is a neat example of the case in point. The whole entourage he's assembled here give it some proper welly to get us off and running. The sound is dense yet crystal clear. He's put together a top cast of mostly European musicians, who no-ones heard of, and they play beautifully a bewildering array of instruments, all flugal horns and oboes. In fact, that quietly blistering opener sounds like he's got a full brass band on board. (I swear to you, he's been listening to Roy Harpers' `When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease')
Perhaps all these Dutch and Belgian musos are something to do with his record label; Crammed .(perversely pronounced cram-med) who I think are/were based in that bastion of taste and excitement, Brussels. Pity about the inference, because `crammed' sums a lot of his music up, as in full-to-bursting with novel ideas, wit, intelligence and mystery.
NB; Newman himself lived in Brussels at the time, even though he's from Watford! You couldn't make it up!
Anyway, Newman and his continental cohorts attack `Commercial Suicide' with such warmth and verve it is absolutely impossible to resist. The last four songs remind me, a lot, of the last four on `Closer', not so much musically, but in their utter completeness, in their single-minded totality.
There is a school of thought that has at its core, the belief that some music can be TOO perfect, that even the most classic albums need a few flaws. I'm not sure about this. I understand the premise, but surely it's every artists duty (and responsibility) to make their work as good as it can be. (Fortunately, there's not many with this problem, see today's ludicrous pop scene.) and fortunately `Commercial Suicide' does have a few imperfections to keep the `rock' intellectual happy. (It often puzzles me why sweet, melodic music like this is perceived as `difficult' and only attracts pseuds and students, while monstrous sexist TUNELESS rappers and their ilk, inhabit the upper reaches of the charts and win awards. Go figure, then e-mail me with the answer.)You could (perhaps) opine that `Commercial Suicide' is too relentlessly, forcibly beautiful, but again, I'm not sure this is a down. Is it supposed to, at certain points, deliberately fail? Just a thought...
Not `Not To' then, but a sensibly creationist semi-follow up, with Newman having enormous fun with an enormous music, and you also get the added `bonus' of him talking utter tosh over an ambient style backing for 10 minutes, as an extra track, (WHAT!?...exactly.) where our hero semi-seriously bemoans the fact that even if he got himself arrested, he'd NEVER make the tabloids
Being honest, this is unique. The title half gives it away, it IS an extremely commercial sound, but Colin Newman knows that he, most definitely isn't.
And being more honest, I kinda like it like that. Best kept secrets etc, I wouldn't begrudge him a few quid though. Perhaps those Belgians......
Can I keep you guessing.......2004-05-16
I bought this just recently and I got quite a shock when I heard this. It wasn't like Wire's punky stuff or even their synthy stuff. It just sounded so alien and strange. Plus there was no beats which kinda gave it this world of it's own. I don't know why I found this in the world section because it could have easily be put in at the rock/pop section but that doesn't matter really. The music sounds haunted and Newman's vocals backed up by his wife Malka Spigel's rather ghostly vocals give up this rather spooky quality. I don't mean spooky in a " give me the creeps " sort of way - just a calm effect that you weren't expecting.
The interview part is hilarious since Colin really has nothing to say and is talking " virtual rubbish " throughout the course of the interview. He says at one point " I'm not getting paid for this. Maybe I should!" and then we have the remix of the interview which has some things you might have missed out on from the original review. It's good fun and if you feel like joining in the fun you can always turn it off when Colin says for you to turn it off....but then you could always disobey

Twinstar.......2002-04-02
You may have already been lucky enough to have heard Twinstar - the WB network has recently featured the song "Or So It Seems" on promos for its shows "Gilmore Girls" and "Smallville." I should mention that I didn't learn this fact from a press release, but because I instantly recognized the tune's haunting melody and passionate vocals - the result of listening to the CD constantly since I bought it. I don't say this lightly. I hear a lot of music. A lot. But rarely do I find something as special as Twinstar's self-titled record -- something that really grips me and stimulates me on an emotional level. Part moody pop, part thoughtful rock, "Twinstar" is a creative masterpiece from vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Keith Joyner, bassist Chris Candelaria and drummer/programmer Andy Kubiszewski. Every song delivers wonderful moments -- the chorus in "Muse" is one of the prettiest I've heard in a long time. As much as NIN's "Downward Spiral" was a horror movie, "Twinstar" is an intelligent film noir, mysterious, poetic, beautiful, exciting, dramatic. A true work of art, "Twinstar" is everything a record should be.

Customer Reviews:
A Live and Active Nailbomb.......2006-03-12
Was Nailbomb better in the Studio? Certainly yes. Is this a poor excuse for a live album? Definitely not. The sound quality isn't top notch, but it's not as bad as some make it out to be. The energy of the band is definitely there and a variety of other musicians helped Max and Alex out throughout the show. Nailbomb was meant to be a studio only album and they decided to only play three shows. Those three shows became two and this album was recorded on the second. Here's how you will know if you will like this album or not. Buy Nailbomb's Remastered Point Black, Which for some reason features about half of this album as bonus tracks. I personally think that both albums should have been remastered and released as a two disc set, but Roadrunner Records is illogical. Anyways, if you like the live songs on the remaster then, you will enjoy this album. I can't give this album 5 stars because it still doesn't beat the studio recordings but it does come pretty damn close.
Should never have been released.......2003-07-19
As far as recording quality goes, this live album is the equivalent of those fuzzy snapshots of the Loch Ness monster or Bigfoot. There is sort of a vague impression of what's actually there, but it could be anything really, and is hardly convincing.
This album was always going to be a one off shot, only one chance to get it right. Nailbomb existed in the studio for one blistering album and two live shows, this being the second. It was recorded during the 1995 Dynamo festival. It may have been a great live performance. It just doesn't sound it here.
The show kicks off solidly enough with a blast through "Wasting Away". However, it is instantly noticeable the samples and electronic beats are not fully in phase with the rest of the sound. Perhaps Eindhoven was windy that day, but the samples, which were an essential part of creating the Nailbomb identity, are almost completely lost.
But after that, it just seems to all go downhill. It is a truly live album, with all the muck ups and poor sounds left in, but after the amazing 'Point Blank', this really doesn't cut it. Max's vocals seem to drown out everything else, and the rhythm guitar sounds flat.
All is not lost though. The rumbling "Sum Of Your Achievements" is an aural steamroller. "Religious Cancer" would have been an excellent fist pumping shout-along anthem in the live arena.
However, after that, the whole show really just tails off terribly. The cover of the Dead Kennedys' "Police Truck" seems like a school orchestra played it. It is out of time, and you can almost feel everyone on stage (including DK's drummer D.H. Peligro) looking around wondering what comes next. The cover of Doom's "Exploitation" is a little better, except someone messes up the vocals. The rest of the live songs are just plain poor. It is almost comforting when 'Sick Life' finally tails off into feedback oblivion.
Two studio tracks were tacked on the end of the album, apparently leftovers from 'Point Blank'. Enough said. Some things best remain unrecorded.
In the liner notes, Max and Alex say, "The Dynamo show is full of mistakes and technical problems, but that's how it was on the day. We think it captures the spirit of the band, unlike a lot of (live) albums today". I have heard better bootlegs. If this is the spirit of Nailbomb, then it was killed off just in the nick of time. This project should have stayed in the studio.
The most aggressive music ever........2000-08-12
Nailbomb are the very definition of aggression. This live album puts all hardcore/punk/metal bands to shame. No-one else has ever conveyed such raw power and gut tearing 'oomph' as this band has, and Unfortunately no-one ever will. I would give several of my vital organs to see these guys live. I grew up with stuff like Maiden, Metallica, Pantera, and just about every other band that forms the brotherhood of metal but these guys leave them all for dead. Max Cavalera does what only he can do and he does a damn fine job on this particular cd. Newport adds his touch and Igor, Evan and yon all jolly friends combine like the lions of voltron to make the definitive album of metal/punk/hardcore/etc. Buy this album if you wish or listen to your crusty Britney Spears I don't give a flying monkey's pooh cos I've already got it and I like it.
Raw and stomp heavy.......2000-05-06
Although the playing is rough in the extreme, this live recording is far heavier than the album. Guest appearances galore (Andreas and Igor noted from the previous review are from Sepultura). I was fortunate enough to see Sepultura in '93 at First Ave (the show they later released a live recording of). The recording couldn't capture the power of the show. This albumn definately captures that feel. Wish I could have been there.
Play loud. Play now........1999-10-27
When Alex Newport (Fudge Tunnel) and Max Cavalera (Sepultura) decided to join forces and do something, it was impossible to conceive that what they were going to make wouldn't be heavy, or at least in some way destructive. Whilst it is in Alex's character to do something just like that, the fact that Max was there negated the possibility, and with Point Blank, we were treated to Alex's sarcastic bile in an explosive axis with Max's pure hatred. Point Blank promised much, but the songs suffered in production. With Proud to commit Commercial Suicide, the songs were played live and given the proper delivery they deserved ie relentlessly violent. Think Sepultura. Think Fudge Tunnel. Think thirty one times heavier and you will have some conception of what this record sounds like. Recorded at the Dynamo festival in 1995, the actual performance featured many celebrities, Dave from Neurosis, Evan from Biohazard, Mr. Fulber from Frontline Assembly (i think), DH peligro from the Dead Kennedys, and Igor and Andreas from some brazilian band... Max's voice was on great form that day, and no amount of technical hitches could conspire to cover that fact. Indeed, his aural catharsis in the dying throes of 'Religious Cancer' would put Barney of Napalm Death to shame. The songs themselves are tight, but loose at the same time, if you understand the dichotomy. The band play very tight, but loose enough to allow the songs to really grind and destroy. It is quite easy to imagine the whole crowd going nuts to this. The sheer aural semtex that is 'World of Shit' could be coronated with the status 'classic', and there are many other gems on offer here, not least a storming cover of the Dead Kennedys 'Police Truck', where Alex's punky vocals sound fantastic. There are no fillers in the live songs. Judging by the sound of them, it would seem that they were written with live performance in mind. The live parts on the album never sound forced, boring or self-indulgent, and of the studio tracks, 'Zero Tolerance' only disappoints. If you have 'Point Blank', sell it. And then buy this. Sell anything, because this is a record you seriously cannot afford to be without. It is harsh, abrasive and brutal. But it is also one of the best. I rarely say: ' if you consider yourself a metal fan...', but it applies here. It is not an album of special invention, but it shows how it should be done, and in so doing, it throws up some amazing songs. Buy it before they stop making it. Seriously.
