5 out of 5 stars Confession: I CHEATED on my score!.......2007-03-30

I came to Amazon looking to find info on Carina Round's latest upcoming release, which there seems to be confusion as to when the album was to be released (I see 2006 release dates, and new dates for mid-2007. Not sure why there is a delay). While I was here, I thought I would take a look at her reader reviews for this album.

Now, my thoughts about The Disconnection -

I've had this album (cd) for about 2-3 years now. The songs Into My Blood, Lacuna and Paris captured my attention and appreciation early on. I hadn't listened to the album all the way through, very often, up until more recently. After spending some more time with it, virtually every song here, or, at least major parts of every song, have gained my appreciation. I've found myself enjoying The Disconnection as a complete work, and not merely as an album you "dabble into" for a few tracks, as I had done up until recently.

About the PJ Harvey comparisons, yes.. perhaps I see some of that. In fact, that's probably where I first heard about this artist, from some PJ Harvey-related forum or forum thread. I think PJ aims more at attempting to simplify her lyrical and musical sound as much as possible, honing these aspects down to their most vital parts. It's an aesthetic she feels most comfortable with or drawn to, in large part to the strong blues music upbringing she had. On the other hand, I see Carina as having a more "jazz" like aesthetic. Her vocals are a touch more playful, more overtly manipulative in tonality within each song (it's fun to sing along to too! well, for me "air" singing, as I couldn't get anywhere close to hitting her notes!). I also see Carina's song structures switching up, going in various directions, where you don't see as much of that from PJ, especially later in her career.

One thing I like about Carina is her songwriting style, at least from what I've heard on this album. It's not too overtly confessional, as in that "woes me, I'm in emotional pain" way. She writes with just enough ambiguity to keep trite, maudlin sentiment from creeping in. What is she singing about? It feels personal and emotional, and you do get some grasp of direct meaning from her at times, but her writing style keeps things vague, which allows the listener to create their own meaning from the songs. My personal take on "the meaning of life", centers around ideas of infinite ambiguity and complexity, which is probably why I respond to this style of writing. Evocative mystery, you might call it. If you are the type who likes clear meaning or straight forward stories which you can easily identify and identify with, well, the songs on this album might frustrate you a bit, or keep you from embracing them too closely. But if you are more attracted to emotion, feel, vocal playfulness, and you like a bit of mystery in your music, I think this album is something you really might enjoy.

A quick word about her band. I don't know if these are long time musical collaborators with her, or mostly a set of hired guns. Whatever their case, I think the musical aspects work well in the context of the songs. It doesn't ever feel disconnected to the material, or sound like generic rock band stuff. It just fits well, I think. Softer, more nuanced when called upon, rougher and aggressive at other times.

In terms of my "5 star" rating, well, I might have given it 4 or 4.5 stars, if that option were available. But a 4 star review garners less attention than a 5 star review, and unknown artists need all the help they can get, to set them apart from a sea of other unknowns! This woman has something special, and I think she deserves your consideration. I'll be very interested to see how she progresses from here.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Keep Her Inside.......2004-10-12

On her website, Carina Round describes her second album, "The Disconnection" as "confronting things like joy, anger, pain and confusion and letting them go." Absent of a better way to describe the album, Round provides the compliment. The album is rough and raw, uptempo and slowly melodic.

The Disconnection is probably one of the best things you've heard in a good while. Round is oft compared to PJ Harvey and Patti Smith, maybe even Sinead O'Connor, but rest easy knowing that the 9-track disc is not another copy of a copy. Round combines simplistic piano melodies with random, invigorating electric guitars and a steady drum beat. That said, every song changes.

Highlights: "Into My Blood" (an uptempo song; "I wait all my life/Just for the rush/The passing of fire/Into my blood") and "Monument" (also uptempo and aggressive: "Red lights, cars zoom past/ New York had a heart attack/ Screaming into a new world" the harmonies here are beautiful) and "Lacuna" ("There's a lot to be/ Said for this morbid self-attention/ The problem lies in my external obsession/ Animal is hungry been sleeping for far too long/ Gonna fill this lacuna somehow")

Simply, this is an awesome album. Listen once, relax, then listen again and again. Let it sink in.

4 out of 5 stars Round Two.......2004-08-29

The first thing one notices when listening to Carina Round is the similarities between her and PJ Harvey - the vocal acrobatics, the naked self-confessions and the black eyeliner.
Despite these comparisons Carina does have her own distinct style, in fact I would say that The Disconnection, her second album, has an energy which, at times, surpasses Harvey. Practically each track has a manic intensity which is seen more in the Bukowski-ish and Denis Johnson like lyrics than the music. The best tracks here are Into My Blood, Motel 74 and the wonderful Sit Tight. The Disconnection is a very good album and it will be a shame if this talented artist remains undiscovered.

5 out of 5 stars A true Gift from GOD!! Shes Rocks!.......2004-07-01

2 out of 5 stars what the hell happened John?.......2006-07-29

i was being generous by giving it 2 stars. what is this? i hope its the last goldfinger album if this is the route theyre going. i mean the last couple were getting a little bad but this is just...discouraging. i dont know what happened to john feldman....but...whatever it was...it changed him. hes more in to animal rights and anti-fascism than ever and its all he sings about. or should i say whines about. this is the most whiny angst driven album i have ever heard. i dont think i like any song on this album enough to not throw it in the garbage. maybe ill go kill a cow with it to give him more to bitch about. and then eat it. seriously though...i gave it three chances...and it just pissed me off. i mean...dont get me wrong...im all about musical evollution....but...this is just...bad. its like...he decided after all his other albums that he was going to use his popularity to voice a message and preach to people. i feel like he considers me to be a mindless member of society and he looks down on me for not shariong his views. i dont like feeling like that. so in short...this album is a little too heavy to be enjoyable unless youre a militant member of peta...dont get it.

4 out of 5 stars In the eyes of the old..........2006-06-21

I've been a fan of Goldfinger since I was seven and heard spokesman while playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. Their old ska I must say was something to be remembered, but as it fell out of style, a band would need to change their base to maintain popularity. The newer punk style isn't half bad; such songs as spokesman, 99 red balloons, open your eyes, radio, FTN, san simeon, or counting the days are awesome songs. But since Paulson, a stellar guitarist, left the band, they've really turned to a pop base. This album marks the climax of their turn to a pop ideal.

My Everything, Wasted, and Iron Fist are adequate tracks, but the rest is painful vocals and amateur music. My Everything maintains an old rock base, Wasted is remiscent of Rio and Tell Me, which is a pleasant combination, and Iron Fist is a powerful telling of Feldmann's clash with the FBI and how he sees the US as a police state governed by the wealthy to suppress the poor. The others aren't so bad, but those three are the only ones I could hold to the standards of the old songs. I would have enjoyed the other songs if I hadn't heard the older goldfinger songs.

i <3 this CD! Wasted is the bestest dong ever!!!!!! if any1 is even reading this, please buy this cd ASAP!

1 out of 5 stars hahaha.......2006-02-25

goldfinger is f***ing hilarious! this cd will leave you on the floor dying of laughter. 40 years olds making TRL music. hilarious. can't wait for them to come back to tucson and pay 20 bucks to see the same boring setlist and twinkie stunt while 13 year olds are complaining about being crushed at a show.

1 out of 5 stars Total crap from a buch of sell outs.......2006-02-03

A band that I loved for a long time now and have always enjoyed the fact that they have stayed playing the same great music and not headed down the path of producing poppy garbage to make it big with mainstream audiences.

Well Congrats John, because you have produced an album full of the worst pop garbage I have heard since good charlotte.

I would have given this album no stars if possible. There is however one good song titled "My everything" which is more like their old stuff.

I can understand when bands mature and broaden their musical styles, but only if it leads to a positive outcome and not when it seems like it has been made for a mainstream audience which is when I say a band has "sold out"

If you havn't got any of the cds, get self-titled, hangups or stomping ground. This is complete crap.

    Album Description

The trio spent eight months of recording intermittently in their home studio in 2003 and finally completed a full-length album, "Disconnection_Imminent." Upon completion of the album, trademark issues forced The Black Sea to change their name to Decahedron. In the time around and after the mixing of "Disconnection_Imminent", Joe Lally resigned bassist duties to focus on his family, and Jason and Shelby began the search for a new bassist. They asked Johnathon Ford of the bands Roadside Monument and Unwed Sailor, who responded positively and is now a permanent member.

" Disconnection_Imminent" is an extension of ideas hinted at in the CDep. With more bravado, the album is kinetic but measured. As an unconscious reaction to overt falsity and the current stream of commerce, Decahedron lashes out to create a political record that lacks neither intelligence nor passion. Lally's trademark sinewy bass lines and Hamacher's lockstep drumming are the perfect foil for Cinca's taut guitar work. Decahedron combines sharp invective and blistering ferocity to produce one of the most memorable full-length debuts in recent memory.

The group completed a three-week tour in February with Engine Down and will be touring the U.S., Japan and Europe throughout 2004

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another stellar album.......2006-07-17

I have to flat-out disagree with the previous reviewer. This album is absolutely fantastic, I can't stress how good it is. Shelby Cinca and Jason Hamacher from Frodus team up with Joe Lally from Fugazi for this outing. If you're a fan of either band, I'd highly recommend this album.
"Disconnection Imminent" sounds very much like a more mature Frodus, expanding upon the musical and lyrical territory that "And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea" carved out. Shelby Cinca's vocals really stand as some out as some of his best singing to date, the lyrics are a concise attack on the encroaching monoculture. And once you hear the rhythm section starts creating solid grooves amongst all the crashing guitars, you just can't turn it off.

3 out of 5 stars Gosh, is this thing still playing . . . ?.......2005-05-19

I hate to pan this because it's unique and sincere and involves players from two other bands that i love, but i just can't give it more than 2 1/2 stars. It simply falls flat from a lack of spirit and/or feeling. It's original and varies a lot from song to song, and yet it repeatedly fails to grab my attention every time i listen to it. Part of the problem might be that there's no real vocal talent in the band to tie it all together, because the musicianship is unquestionably there already. Hence, some interesting licks, riffs and changes bubble up to the surface occasionally, but there really aren't any great songs. Maybe a few more eps and a decent mouth can bring this project up to snuff, but barring that, they'd do just as well to nix it alltogether.

5 out of 5 stars A band to see live!!!.......2004-09-15

I got the chance to see this band at the Dillenger Escape Plan show in Toronto at Club Rocket, late July/04. They were like the second band to come on before Stars Shaped Like Planes, The Bronx and of course the almighty Dillenger. They really surprised me, for the fact that they completely took advantage of the time the had for their set. Within the 40-45 min. set they had me sold. Their mixture of punk/beats and some Refused kinda inspiration was solid and to top it off "Disconnection Imminent" is just one great album. The instrumentals and the driven tracks compliment each other so well, I recommend this album to anyone that can appreciate good music.

5 out of 5 stars Great to listen to........2004-05-03

I had never heard of this band until I went to the Plea for Peace Take Agtion tour here in DC (Ahh...Cursive). But Decahedron was the second band to play, and I was very impressed. I loved the energy of the lead singer and how he plaed his guitar. I enjoed the show so much I bought their CD. The CD is amazing, but I still like them better live. Decahedron's instumental side to their music reminds me somewhat of At The Drive-In. The kind of off-set chords and the relaxed feel to the music. The instrumental songs are great, and I love how the singer screams (Drowning into yourself!). The CD has a nice amount of both driving beats and slower ones, trippy music all the same. Great album.
