Their name says it all: the Trashmen were the sickest frat party/psycho surf group to ever win a battle of the bands with their buzz-bomb version of the West Coast sound--and they were from Minneapolis! Led by singer-drummer Steve Wahrer, the group scored big in '64 with the crazed teen anthem "Surfin' Bird" (also memorably used in Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket"). Comprised of 16 tracks recorded in Texas--some in stereo, some even in tune--this collection of recently rediscovered trashy gems might as well have been marketed as an instant party. The highlights here are "Ghost Riders" and "Keep A-Knockin'," raucous tracks that will have audiophiles sweating over the well-being of their woofers and tweeters. Amazon.com essential recording

Continuing Riccardo Chailly's topical Shostakovich recordings (he's already visited the composer's jazz-inflected and dance pieces), this collection of music for film offers the series greater heft. The music here is as entangled in politics and pop culture as the jazzy and dancy material, but here the emotions are more complex and the execution more exciting.

The films Shostakovich was scoring somehow sought legitimacy or outright approval from Soviet power regimes, but as in all his music, Shostakovich enacted subtle subversions. The parade-step march cadences of The Counterplan are exaggerated just enough to integrate all kinds of conflicting dark undertows, emphasized coyly by Chailly and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The excerpts from Alone are all over the map, spooky and turbulent and bleak in equal measures, in answer to so many mandated bright, blasting musical ventures elsewhere in the Soviet cultural regime. The works continue until 1967, with a twisty waltz from Sofia Perovskaya, which seems more like a distant comment on the notion of a dance piece than music scripted for dance. For its mix of big, lit sweeps and minute, shadowy motions, this is one of the best single-CD Shostakovich sets--themed or not--in print. --Andrew Bartlett

This recording is excellent. The works are rather light so one does not notice at first that the recording is that good. After some listebning I notice and i Am sure you will do too. Pirogorov and Sofia Petrovskaja i like best. Great recording.

This is the perfect album for anyone who believes Shostakovich was only capable of writing music that expressed his inner turmoil.
Here is an album of the composer just doing his job (writing soundtracks for propaganda films) and showing he's capable of playing the field like a consummate pro.
Many of the melodies may sound vaguely familiar, and it's no wonder; they were often pilfered by other assembly line arrangers for Hollywood musicals and other upbeat entertainment.
I'd have to agree with the previous reviewer, who thinks track 25 is the best. It's the Romance from "The Gadfly", which is arguably Shostakovich's greatest melody, played here with perfection; the "lazy" pizzicato and slightly staggered fourth beat in the measure is something I haven't heard before on this piece, and it works very nicely for these ears.

The film scores of Dmitri Shostakovich are certainly not his best works, but they are definetly worth a look. There is a great range of music on this CD, from the joyful 'Tale of the Silly Little Mouse' to the harshness of 'Hamlet', and Chailly and his players give solid performances throughout. I wouldn't really recommend this as an introduction to Shostakovich's works, but if you're a fan, then it would make a great addition to your collection.

Shostakivich wrote some 'heavy' music, but in his better moments he wrote some beautiful melodies (e.g. The Jazz Suite) and film themes including The Tale of the silly little mouse'. What a pity that you have to wait until track 25 for the best piece - the Romance from the 'Gadfly' (Theme music from the BBC series 'Reilly, ace of spies'). The definitive recording of this piece was the version by the USSR Cinema Symphony Orchestra, with Khatchaturian conducting, but the version on this recording is also excellent.

The rumor had always been that the original Dwight Twilley Band had completed four albums between 1974 and 1978 that were never released due to problems with their label, Shelter Records; the few writers and personal friends who heard the albums claimed the material was superior to much of their released work. The Great Lost Twilley Album collects the best "lost" tracks from this era, as well as prime material from the unreleased Blueprint album from 1980; true to the myth, the songs are easily as good as the band's classic early albums. The band especially shines on the proposed follow-up to the hit "I'm on Fire," "Shark," an infectious rocker that stands as one of the great "should-have-been-hits." - Chris Woodstra, AMG

Hey, I like The Creation as much as the next chav, but if you're thinking this is a lost psych masterpiece from 1968, think again. Sounds more like Kansas than Creation.

The outside packaging says they broke up in 1967 then re-grouped in 1996, and that this album was recorded between those years. Right - the fab 1980s.

Sorry chaps, but you set a high standard in the 1960s that apparently will never be matched. Deliberately deceiving your fans into shelling out a few bob for an '80s album is beneath you.

    Archie Brownlee was probably the greatest singer I have ever heard. His range is incredible and fans of soul as well as Gospel will appreciate this CD. It is only sad that we don't have more of his music available with this sound quality. It's the closest thing to hearing them in person - that must have been an emotional knockout. This collection shows his spontaneous genius at its best.

    Funny to think that all the times I have heard my uncle sing and play guitar, this is first time that I can remember that I have heard his amazing band. My uncle was the guitarist(Bill Schnare) of the Great Scots.What a great sound and awesome harmonies!

    HEY YOU! What are you doing listening to those Backstreet Boys or N-Sync albums! Come with me and listen to this fine album from five guys from the Great White North the Great Scots! Hidden for nearly 30 years, this "lost album" contains many great harmonic tunes like "Don't You Believe Them," "Ball and Chain," and "Honey and Wine." This fivesome deserve better than a few appearnaces on Bandstand and Shindig and it is about time that their music is heard.

    The Great Lost Album is a great find! The Knickerbockers were a 60's group best known for their Beatlesque hit, LIES (not on this Cd). This album proves that they were more than one hit wonders. I like the Beatles-style tracks the best. Songs like SHE SAID GOODBYE,WE GOT A GOODTHING GOIN',ONE TRACK MIND(unreleased stereo mix), and WHAT DOES THAT MAKE YOU. But their is a variety
    of styles on the album: do-wop( ALL I NEED IS YOU),frat rock soul(I AIN'T GOT A RIGHT),protest folk rock(COMING GENERATION),ballads(IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT) and psychedellic (MY FEET ARE OFF THE GROUND).
    There is a kitschy movie song included too-THE PAD AND HOW TO USE IT.
    Everything is done well and with great spirit! These guys enjoyed what they were doing and it comes through. For fans of this underrated group this CD is a must. For others this is a great introduction to a fun band from a fun time!
    The Cd comes with liner notes with comments on each song-often insightful and frequently amusing. Get this today!
