5 out of 5 stars Best of What You Remember.......2007-05-07

If you are a fan of the Eagles and can remember the original Miami Vice, this is the collection for you. Best of the sounds of what made the Eagles great and some story-telling like Smuggler's Blues. If you have old vinyl like I do and want to update to a CD or download to an digital player, this is a great way to get the best of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars Edgy Eagles member with his best '80s hits.......2005-03-20

I still consider Glenn Frey as the edgy Eagles member--always taking chances with what he sings and performs. This album does a good job covering his 80s period of solo hits. I love The Heat Is On, Smuggler's Blues, True Love, All Nighter, Sexy Girl and others. But my favorite is You Belong to The City--perhaps the most 80s-sounding record, from the lyrics about neon lights to the rumbling keyboards, the dramatic bridges around the 3 minute part of the song and the Miami/South Beach song landscapes that helped spawn the Miami Vice tv show. There are no shades of other decades' influences in this song--this is a very 80s song in the attitude and decadence of that decade. Glenn Frey's best solo record to me. Frey shows shades of R&B in his voice on the rock driven album and he sounds so good at it. Next to Stevie Nicks, he's the next best second act in pop music following a 70s supergroup's huge success.

3 out of 5 stars Solo Collection is better.......2003-09-15

Although the Eagles had disbanded, many of its members went on to solo careers. A popular member of the band to go on to a solo career was Glenn Frey. In the eighties, he shelled out a number of pop-rock masterpieces - now available in a single collection. Read on for my review of Twentieth Century Masters - The Best Of Glenn Frey.

PROS:
-This compilation is exactly what the casual fan will want. Frey's biggest solo hits were You Belong To The City, Smuggler's Blues, and The Heat Is On (written by the one and only Harold Faltermeyer), and they're all here!
-The previously unreleased tracks are good (but don't expect anything revolutionary from them.)
-The compilation doesn't just rely on the hits, there are a number of underrated masterpieces here as well.
-Many of these tracks originally appeared on soundtracks, so it's good to finally have them all in one place.

CONS:
-The tracks aren't all in the original release order (why do hits compilations do this!?)
-The compilation doesn't fill the eighty minutes that can fit onto a single CD.
-Partytown isn't here! What really makes me mad is they had room to fit it on here.
-This is a SOLO COLLECTION and nothing more, so don't buy this expecting to find any Eagles tracks.
-The CD that is actually entitled "Solo Collection" has more tracks.

OVERALL:
Despite a few complaints, this is an excellent hits package. Any fans of eighties pop-rock would be doing themselves a huge favor by picking up this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars The acid test.......2001-05-30

I bought this based on Glenn Frey being a former Eagle, and the fact I liked a few songs, such as Smugglers Blues and Sexy Girl, with the hope that it might have some other good songs maybe in the Eagles vein.

I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of material. There are a number of high quality songs on this album such as The One You Love and Soul Searchin, and You belong to the city. Soul searchin also features some great harmonies reminiscent of The Eagles, but delivered by a female gospel choir.

So far it has passed the acid test, which is that I can listen to the whole album while driving my car without pushing the skip button once. That makes it a quality album in my book.

How does it differ from The Eagles? The production values are as good. The music itself is different, there is more use of different instruments such as the saxophone. I would say it is a little more progressive. The songs are very good. I highly recommend this album.

If you were to find this review helpful, please click yes.

5 out of 5 stars The Heat Is On!.......2000-09-19

Glenn Frey comes flying back with all his old hits. The Heat Is On is one of the best songs on the world. Ever one should buy this album it is great!

5 out of 5 stars An atmospheric, golden, classic, transporting masterpiece........2007-03-25

This s one of my top albums of all time. It recreates a steamy, nostalgic, romantic, wistful mood of days gone by. Using highly crafted production and top-shelf musicians, we get a sonic masterpiece with acoustic clarity and no gimmicks.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point for New Fans.......2007-02-26

First of all, I'm not sure what the first reviewer was thinking. Perhaps he was expecting Frank Sinatra on vocals? What a silly review.
Robbie Robertson does have a dark, rough voice...and it works wonderfully for his music ( he's no Tom Waits, though). The vocals aren't doctored up with a bunch of added effects and overdubbing like many pop singers, because this isn't pop. You want computer-assisted, butter & honey vocals, go listen to Justin Timberlake. You want true emotional, powerful, real singing, get this CD. The music is great, and you'll want to hear this CD many times over. Personally, I would have chosen a couple of different songs from his newer stuff from the last 10 < years, and included some of his work from The Band. Still, this collection represents his musical style and artistic mastery very well. For those who are new to his music, I suggest this CD as a starting point from which you can pursue your own personal tastes in Robertson's vast repertiore.

3 out of 5 stars Robbie got lost in the moon light.......2006-09-29

The song writting and instrumental work was excellent the singing was not. Robbie sounded like a New York City drag queen I heard singing on TV once. His voice was nazel and gritty sounding also sometimes it was out of tune-a real in the shower only singing voice. If he just would have let Richard Emanuel, Rick Danko 0r Levon Helms do those vocals the songs would have had justice done to them. Sacrifice with Leonard Pletieur was by favorite as in Alabama we know what happens when you step out of line. If you can forgive most of the singing the cd is worthy of purchase. Robbie should have stayed with The Band instead of Martin Scorcesi of which I think most of his films are dark and dull and a testimony to hollywood's golden age being over. My prayer is that Robbie finds the real meaning of life which is Jesus Christ.

4 out of 5 stars i forgot how much I liked Charlie Sexton.......2006-11-10

Alot of great tracks both solo and with different variations of performers. Brings back great memories of the mid-80's. Don't understand why he wasn't more mainstream but the critics really loved his music. Maybe that's the way he wanted it though.

5 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "Solo" Work, But As Close As It Comes With Charlie.......2006-04-27

A sampling of work from Charlie that varies somewhat in style and substance, seeing as how it is compiled from a reperatoire that spans two decades. His early hits from the "Pictures For Pleasure" era are fairly typical early '80s pop production, but the songrwriting and production quality both take a quantum leap forward for the three songs taken from the first (and only) "Arcangels" album - Sweet Nadine, Living in a Dream, and Paradise Cafe. Vocals for these three songs are shared with fellow Arcangel and former Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Doyle Bramhall II. The final four titles are taken from the Charlie Sexton Sextet offering of "Under The Wishing Tree", and show a more mature, darker, and musically dexterious Sexton as he plays several different instruments on "Wishing Tree" over and above his trademark virtuoso guitar work.

This is a broad sample of what Charlie has done over his career, but having spent the last several years as guitarist for Bob Dylan it's certainly not where he's at these days musically. In my own opinion this is a light snack, but if you want a real Sexton feast, then you may want to try his last two albums - "Under The Wishing Tree" and "Cruel And Gentle Things", two albums in which Charlie first faces the demons of his early life with frank honesty, and proves that the consumate musician and songwriter he has become may well be, in a large part, because of his tumultuous upbringing rather than despite it.

2 out of 5 stars Haven't figured this guy out.......2006-02-08

I bought this because I really like a couple of his songs which you can't get anywhere else. I like the songs despite the fact that they are dealt death blows by the worst 80's production ever, production which would have made most songs unlistenable. In fact, they may be unlistenable to most people. I don't know what the deal is exactly, but apparently Charlie Sexton is a pretty talented guy who sold his soul to the record company in order to get records out (calling Cheap Trick...). Caveat Emptor.

2 out of 5 stars On the low end of mediocre.......2004-05-16

The 20th Century Masters entry into the Irish Rovers' Greatest Hits menagerie is on the low end of both; weak by Irish Rovers' standards and one of the lesser efforts in Universal Music's Millennium Collection.

The mastering is fair, with no glaring problems, but the sound is a bit muddy and the bass track rather weak.

The up-side of this collection is that several songs can be hard to find, especially the Tom Paxton cult-classic "Wasn't That a Party?". The down side is that many are re-recordings. This isn't terribly noticeable on gentle tunes like "The Unicorn" but is both disappointing and annoying on the aforementioned lively drinking song "Wasn't That a Party?".

If all the buyer wants is to add an Irish Rovers collection to his or her musical library, this CD will do. If, however, one desires a bit more quality in sound and more adherence to the original music, pass this one by and look elsewhere.

I bought this CD, and although it contains a few of my all time favorite songs, the sound quality is terrible. All of the accompanying music is washed out, and the vocalists sound like they are using megaphones. I've heard better sound on my car radio. Love several of the tracks, hate the tinny sound.

      5 out of 5 stars Lost Soul.......2001-03-18

Unfortunately in this millennium no one has been able to capture the soulful sound that made The Righteous Brothers famous International Recording Stars. Millions of people have enjoyed their number one hits that are on this CD like "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost That Loving Feelin' ". But unless you have enjoyed the unbelievable sound of Bobby Hatfield pouring his heart out in "I Believe" or the combined intertwining soulful sound of Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley giving you their hearts in "You'll Never Walk Alone" you will never truly know the talents of The Righteous Brothers. Unless the Various Record Companies who recorded the brothers decide to re-release the record albums produced in the 1960's the true Blue Eyed Soul of The Righteous Brothers will be lost in the last Millennium.
