Magnum's Best.......2005-08-16

The single from this album - "Just Like An Arrow" - brought me into Magnum's world. And what a world ! Storytellers is a fantastic album, both the sound and Rodney Matthews' artwork. More complete than perhaps any other that they've recorded though I would rate "Sleepwalking" and "Rock Art" as both at least 4 stars... Bob Catley's voice and Tony Clarkin's words create an incredible imagery in your mind - I challenge anyone to listen to "Les Morts Dansants" and not picture the soldier shot by his comrades - "paper square to his heart pinned tight..." I've been lucky enough to have seen them live at their peak - once at Birmingham Odeon and a couple of times at Birmingham NEC. For a band that was so relatively unsuccessful in sales terms to fill a venue like the NEC was amazing. They're still around, having reformed 3 or so years ago, releasing albums and touring. Go and see them if you get the chance...

WHAT AN ALBUM!!.......2003-09-23

When the history of British Rock is written, it will be seen as criminal if this album (and indeed "Vigilante" and "Wings of Heaven" that followed it) is excluded from such a list. Magnum have always had the ability to evoke powerful images and emotions through the joint efforts of the band's superb musicianship, Tony Clarkin's exquisite lyrics and Bob Catley's heartfelt singing. He is seen more as a storyteller than a straight vocalist, as his voice perfectly captures the mood and emotion that each song asks of him. Epic songs "How Far Jerusalem?", On A Storyteller's Night" and the excellent "Les Morts Dansant" sit alongside pop-rock number such as "Two Hearts", "Just Like An Arrow" and the under-rated "Steal Your Heart". Coupled with the gorgeous piano-ballad "The Last Dance", this is an album who's delights are savoured time and time again with each new playing. Also, the album cover by Rodney Matthews is superb too.

Thought provoking.......2003-04-26

I have followed Magnum for 17 years and have bought all their album. I would vote this their second best after Vigilante, that I must say was excellent. They are a band that should have been more popular, due to their lyrics and music, but hey atleast we appreciated them.
I have met Bob and Tony, and you can't have met nicer guys, I am proud to be a fan and will continue to support them.

Whith this album I knew the band and I loved it. Immediately I bought the L.P. and the Vigilante too. Now, in de CD era, I own almost all the Magnum records and this is my preferred, seconded by the "Kingdom of Madness" album. If you want to know the essence of Magnum, you must hear this album, or the "Kingdom of Madness" or "Magnum II" albums. You'll like it.

Still Regarded by Many as the Birmingham Pomp Rock Troupe's Definitive Statement, "on a Storytellers Night" Not Only Succeeded in Pulling Magnum Back from the Very Jaws of Extinction, it also Acted as Springboard Towards the Long- Overdue Success that Had Been Eluding the Quintet Since the Mid 70's. Released in May of 1985 after FM-REVOLVER Stepped Into the Breach When a Disagreement with Jet Records Nearly Disintegrated the Band Prematurely, Magnum's Sixth Album Received Quick and Lavish Praise from the Press with Bob Catley and Tony Clarkin Being Singled Out for their Outstanding Contributions in the Vocal and Song-writing Departments Respectively. The Albums Top 30 Success Only Proved Further that Magnum were Far from a Spent Force and the Albums Success Contributed Directly to a Major Deal with Polydor Records. This 20th Anniversary Edition of "on a Storytellers Night" Adds Seven Demo Track Versions and a Bonus 25 Minute Interview.

WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BEST ALBUM EVER MADE BY MAGNUM.HEAVY BASS AND DRUM LINES,FANTASTIC GUITAR WORK, COUPLED WITH BRILLIANT VOCALS AND SOUL SEARCHING LYRICS. AS FAR AS MELODIC ROCK WITH A PUNCH GOES, IT DONT GET BETTER THAN THIS.

On A Storyteller's Night never even got word of mouth on this side of the ocean,but in their home country,England and many parts of Europe they were very popular and one listen to this cd you'll know why.If you're a fan of melodic rock or commercial rock ALA Foreigner,REO,Kansas,etc.You'll absolutely love this! Better songwriting and songs that are majestic and captivating,one listen to the title track,Last Dance or possibly the best song you've never heard Les Morts Dansant and you'll be hooked.The rest of the album is equally on par,but the above three really stand out.Check these guys out I think you're in for a real treat.I was lucky enough to be stationed in Germany '84-'87 and saw them live,it was a great show and had a huge following in Germany,I'm just glad I got to check them out over there because I doubt I would have even heard about them here in the states.Again I highly recommend this CD for anybody who likes the afformentioned rock,but have never heard of Magnum,I know you'll love this hidden treasure!

On A Storyteller's Night , By Magnum.......2000-04-29

I loved this album! A genuine work of art. I am only now discvering Magnum's music even though I was familiar with them in the 80's. Tony Clakin's songwriting is awesome! However without Bob Catley's magnificent soaring vocals it just would not be the same. The title track, Les Morts Dansant, and The Last Dance are masterpieces. Especially The Last Dance, that song really gets me. It is a gorgeous and heartbreaking song. One that many people, including myself, can relate to. Bob Catley's vocals are so emotional. I wish I had paid more attention to this band 15 years ago, but I am making up for lost time now. This album is a must for fans of 80's British rock. I recommend it heartily.

Magnum at their height.......2000-03-10

This album stands up very well in comparison with Magnum's other offerings, delivering with a growing confidence another helping of some of the best that British Rock had to offer in the mid eighties. The opening track is a real belter, and has since become a staple of the live show and 'Best of's; one of Magnum's best. This is a strong album throughout though,and it's difficult to pick out individual tracks to recommend. Definitely worth the money back in '85 and still worth every penny.

An AOR Classic.......1999-05-15

This is a must have album for anyone who is a fan of melodic/pomp rock. While they are unheard of in the U.S., Magnum was big in Europe and this is the CD that pushed them to stardom. After hearing this CD you will wonder where they have been all of your life!
