"Heading for Tacoma / And driving too fast / Nixon's in a coma / And I hope it's gonna last," sings Dean Wareham on "Rhythm King," one of Penthouse's more cheerful tracks. Clearly, fans of Lloyd Cole and Television's Tom Verlaine can take heart: Galaxie 500 main man Wareham captures the wry and reflective spirit of both artists on this third album from his band Luna. Wareham's melancholy vocals and Sean Eden's pretty electric guitar shimmer brightly over the drony rhythms of ex-Feelies drummer Stan Demeski and Chills bassist Justin Harwood. Mr. Verlaine himself steps into the fray with some guest fretwork on "Moon Palace" and "23 Minutes in Brussels," which, like many Luna tracks, slowly builds and then drifts into gorgeous semiresolution. And don't miss that unlisted bonus track, a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "Bonnie and Clyde" with Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier singing the Brigitte Bardot part. A sensitive band that hasn't forgotten how to rock, Luna have a talent for making songs of resignation and regret that are not only palatable but, after repeated listenings, positively addictive. --Bill Forman
Customer Reviews:
My new favorite.......2007-02-07
"Days of our nights" has been my favorite Luna album since I first started listening to them about 10 years ago. I love Galaxie 500 too, Dean's voice is something in-human that's mearly using his body to convey thoughts and feelings from unseen realms. I was fortunate enought to see Luna live on their farewell tour a year ago, and it's burned into my brain for good. They played almost every song from "Penthouse" and not one from "Days of our nights" (something to do with the rights, and the album being out of print?). Anyway, I finally broke down and bought Penthouse. I now understand why it was always chosen as the "best of artist" on their discographies. This album is much more refined than the previous outings, without being as depressing as "Days". Somehow this music brings out all the little memories that I thought were lost, shines like a dim streetlight and pulls them down some unknown road.
P.S. Britta is so hot
Only an acquired taste if you've never heard real alternative music.......2006-10-18
I was very late to Luna, and when I read some of the reviews I wasn't sure at first, because I kept hearing things about it being an acquired taste and his voice might not be suitable for some people's taste. I admit, all great music is an acquired taste, because it's not just rubbish, non-thinking mainstream teenie bopper music; bands like Luna have songs that keep getting better and better, sometimes even years later. But, anybody who has ever heard good alternative music should hear Luna and find it very welcoming immediately. After several listens of "Penthouse," I am actually starting to find that the greatness lies mostly in the vocals and the way he sings to fit the clever lyrics and melody of the songs. Instrumentally, yes, it is very well-crafted, but his singing voice is magic to me. When Luna first started making music I was a bit young and not a serious music fan yet, so it's a shame know I could have been listening to this all through middle school and high school, but I'm happy I finally got around to checking them out. I immediately put them up there with some of my favorite artists. I have yet to hear all of their albums yet, but I can't imagine anything will top this masterwork. "Moon Palace," and "23 Minutes in Brussels" are two of the best songs I've ever heard. I would strongly recommend this album to anybody. If you hear this album and don't like it, then I really don't know what else to say to you.
Real Music for non-morons.......2006-01-10
Yes, Luna is an aquired taste, but if you have listened to some Luna and like what you hear, this is their best album. There is not a bad track on this album and I think this is some of most lyrical guitar ever recorded. If you get it and you don't like it at first, it will be because of the vocals, but sleep on it, give it a chance, and it will become an old friend.
Their best work..........2004-11-20
After exhausting all of their existing albums, I finally came across Penthouse. This, in mind, is Luna at their best - long guitar heavy jams, droning bass and drums, and those perfect transitions...
Nocturnal Urban Ambience.......2003-10-18
The cover of the album pretty much captures the essence of the music. A low angle b/w shot of the building with two floors mysteriously illuminating intense light. Muted disjointedness and flushes of sedateness all packaged visually for our eyes and, thus, beautifully recorded within these 11 songs for our ears. Dean and his cohorts were/are trying to capture the after-hour, "that tiny, tiny hour" of urban ambience, a dream-like, hazy state of mind. Wandering in the streets amidst the iron grid, concrete pavement, going and curving the streets in a prolonged trance. The cover shot and 2 other photos on the CD all evoke this nocturne.
Lead by Wareham's observations of urban life, supplanted by rockin' smoothin' guitar work and seamless production, this album grows on you and somehow never gives its complete impact in any 1 listening. It's so good and subtle, the effects are not that clear-cut but yet the music pulls you into its pensive mood.
A pleasant stop for my nocturnal ears.

Pretty Good.......2006-07-29
This was a very unique item. Fans of the series will enjoy it. At times some of the tracks seem out of place when out of the game, but that's more than made up for by the many powerful and classic tracks that these CD's have. The first CD is more techno-inspired while the second is more operatic. It's good music to do push-ups to or to drive to. Especially the first track of the first CD.

With the release of 1995's Til Shiloh, reggae's premiere dancehall DJ proved he is as powerful a singer as he is a chanter. A quintessential Jamaican genius, Buju is a nexus of everything about that music culture that awes and frustrates outsiders who fall under its spell. This 21-track follow-up is every bit Shiloh's equal, even an unimaginable step forward. "Our Father in Zion," "Destiny," and "African Pride" swell the heart as full as any of Marley's compositions, while "Redder Than Red," "My Woman Now," and "Love Dem Bad" prove Buju's still dancehall's Mr. Mention. Best of all, Buju reconciles reggae's divided soul, suggesting that the mountaintop Rastaman and the ghetto rude boy are one and the same. --Elena Oumano

Great.......2007-04-11
Another great Buju cd. Must be included in any reggae or dancehall collection. One of Jamaica's great sons of music!
Buju Buju Buju.......2005-11-09
Buju is by far one of the best reggae artist there is. Needless to say he is my favorite and anything he touches is great, his positive messages in his music keeps him on top. Destiny,Circumstances,Love Sponge and Murderer are just a few of his best and my favorites. pick up his Ultimate Collection CD, you won't be disappointed.
Never Gets Old.......2005-07-08
Inna Heights has been one of my favorite cds since it came out. I listen to pretty much everything, and while the 11 other CDs I keep in the visor slots have changed time and time again over the years, this one has remained a constant.
I should also mention that I purchased this CD five times within the first two years it came out because my friends kept stealing it or borrowing it and "forgetting" to give it back. Was a great choice to listen to in my discman while running track. Now the whole album is on my husband's ipod.
And its really for everyone. While I LOVE Dancehall/ Reggae, even non-fans choose to listen to this CD in my car. These passengers include my mother and my kids.
Mr. Good.......2005-07-06
First off, I'll always give a Buju cd a five star rating. Second,I'll give my own opinion:
Hills and Valleys can't go wrong - just a good message
Destiny is a private song to think about yourself
Cry No More proves that Buju has many sisters
LOVE DEM BAD make I love being a woman (a true)
Love Sponge is a song to sing to anyone who rock you right
This cd is good, too many songs on it, but good
Buju!.......2005-03-13
Buju Banton is my favorite reggae artist. What I like about his music is the message that he's sending out. The positivity. And the beats that are produced. However, Inna Heights is not my favorite, Til Shiloh is. Inna heights is still a good album though. Hills and valleys, cry no more, and love sponge are my favorites on this album.

Rapping Didn't Match Production.......2006-03-27
This could have been a better album had the main rapper's skills went with the quality production Quik came with. Too often Playa Hamm wasn't rapping on beat. Plus I felt that lyrically he and Tweed Caddilac got too focused on using the bitch, hoe and nigga lyrics that too many gangsta/playa rappers do. This made the lyrics feel too repetative in my opinion. I have heard Playa Hamm rap since this album on Quik's Safe & Sound and I think he's a better rapper now than he was back then with this album.
So musically I was feeling it,but lyrically I felt it was too repetative for the reasons I mentioned.
A West Coast CD Collection Must Have.......2004-12-14
This is a CD I remember from high school back in '92. Back when DJ Quik was killing the game. I had to have it just because Quik, 2nd II None, AMG & Hi-C used to shout out the group's name on all of their songs. Bought this without hearing a single track from it and have loved it ever since.
The group consist of Playa Hamm & Tweed Cadillac. Playa Hamm is the player rapper showing you how playas play. Tweed is the pimp of the group. He's not a rapper but he puts it down with a smooth delivery and easy speak to let the suckas and ladies know how the pimp game goes.
Paid the Cost features appearances from DJ Quik, AMG, Eazy-E & others. Stand out tracks are Trust No, Blak Iz A Poet, Explanation Of A Playa & P.L.F. The CD does have some songs that sag and lack but overall it's a great listen.
I highly recommend this CD. 10 plus years later I still keep it in rotation. Mine was stolen recently which is what brings me here to Amazon to buy another. My 4th replacement! That's bcuz it's a must have.

A Hip Little Compilation.......2007-04-17
Very listenable, even danceable, and certainly high calibre. The PPPP is a great revisit of the 60's genre, replete with swing and jazz elements couched in modern rhythm and acoustic quality.
One Neat Album.......2006-08-11
This is one neat album. Almost all of the tracks are great.
MEE-OWW! PURRFECTLY PINK PANTHER-Y..........2006-06-13
... hands down the best compilation I've heard in quite some time - an intelligent selection of contemporary tunes that fit nicely with the penthouse theme... highlights include the jet-set sound of Koop's "Summer Sun", Fantastic Plastic Machine's retro-60's "Bachelor Pad" and the outstanding "Shot In The Dark/Peter Gunn" mix... a definite desert-island disc.
I wish there was a remake/remix of "It Had Better Be Tonight".......2005-10-27
Henry Mancini was a master musician. His music will always be remembered and anytime you watch a film that he scored you'll hear what a great musician he was. You can actually hear his trademark sound and get to recognize his style. Pink Panther's Penthouse Party came out to coincide with the release of the DVD box set of the Pink Panther Movies. The CD includes the original version of the Pink Panther Theme as well as remixes of it by Fischerspooner which basically adds the signature Fischerspooner sound from (#1) and mixes a modern dance beat to the original. Also the Malibu Remix which adds a big beat sound to the original version of the track. And then there's also the Pink Panther Theme Revisited by St. Germain which slows down the track and adds a funky, jazzy and groovy beat to the original. There's also a remake of the Shot In The Dark Theme mixed with The Peter Gunn Theme called (The Gunn Mix) by Chris Mancini and Lennart. This is a fun and groovy remake which basically mixes the two Henry Mancini classics together as one piece. A great idea! The album also contains some original tracks by artists that sound or are inspired by the Henry Mancini sound. Some great tracks on here are included like Tres Tres Chic by Mocean Worker which fits perfectly here. This track has the french vocal sampling to the loungy dance beat track. Then there's Intraspettro by Les Hommes which sounds like an update Bossa Nova lounge track. Bossa Per Due is also another fun track on here dating back to 2000 but still sounding retro fresh! I remember this track was used in a Nissan Commercial back then. But a great track and work perfectly in the Pink Panther soundtrack. Other stand out cuts on here include Voulez Vous by Arling and Cameron, Sacre Francais by Dimitri From Paris, Bachelor Pad by Fantastic Plastic Machine, The Girl From Ipanema by Fantastic Plastic Machine and Smokebomb by Ursula 1000. The only track i had a problem with in the collection was San Antonio by Kinky. I like the track but I didn't think it fit here. Oh well overall a really fun CD.

So Very, Very Cool--A Finely Crafted Tribute.......2005-02-24
Of all of the lounge, smooth, cool-jazz, chill and other trendy compilations of the last few years, this is one of the best, coherent in organization and sequence, consistent in theme, and with a unified aural feel. It all fits together just about perfectly, with that unstated Panther attitude and feeling.
Remember, the Pink Panther (original) was an all-Euro production, with European actors, locations, and a decidedly pre-Mod-60s, riche-chic Euro feel. After all, the original locations were Paris, Cortina, and Monte Carlo. This album faithfully captures that reserved, understated and laidback Euro cool.
The liner notes are disappointingly scant, a single albeit accurate paragraph about the Panther, with some whack homage to some artist named Shag. Apparently Shag is "proud to have created the newest chapter in the ongoing evolution of (the Panther)," but it's achingly unclear what this copy is talking about and how it relates to this CD. The liner notes could have been much better, with at least a nod to the brilliance of Mancini.
Sadly missing on this CD is a take on "It Had Better Be Tonight." I'm disappointed that there were no artists who wanted to take on this mod-rocking bit of ski-sweater fireside dance mania.
The CD opens just the right way, with the original Mancini theme, but the jazzy solo and bridge are cut from the track; Track 1 just ends cold and the Fischerspooner theme Mix kicks in. This is an awful segue, and a disrespectful butchering of Mancini's original theme. This Fischerspooner mix, however, is a perfect counter to the original.
The Gabin Remix Edit of Peggy Lee asking the musical question "Fever" is very well done. The pace is just right, not a pounding club bpm, but with enough drive to get up and dance to it if you want, or just to sit back in your sling chair and nod your head to the rhythm. The horns are sparse and soft, with a lot of smooth echo and tremolo. Good stuff.
Titan's "Corazon" follows, and continues the up-tempo trend of the CD. This is a get-on-the-floor dance track. It's a smooth shift here, geographically and ethnically, away from the original Euro Panther vibe to the Latin, and it works. It's not intrusive or jolting, and fits very well after "Fever." Good addition, and a good selection for this release.
"Smokebomb" follows, and is a full-on electronica club assault. It's not too heavy or hard in punctuation--no "Spybreak" here--and it follows well the bass feel and sounds of "Corazon." Good flute and well-defined bongo punctuations in the center, and a great thwanging guitar breakdown to take us back to the Panther theme, maybe even as far back as "After The Fox," a sadly overlooked Mancini soundtrack masterpiece. This track echoes the Latin feel of the previous track and the subtle shift in the CD's direction. Another good choice here, and good sequencing.
Then follows Pizzicato Five's "Girl From Ipanema." Sorry, but this tune is out of place here, too far apart musically, geographically, ethnically, even in metaphysical linking of the ultra-cool cat with hot-n-steamy Brazil.
Then comes Fatboy Slim's relative hit "Weapon of Choice." The muted intro goes on a bit too long before the tune kicks in, but its bass-heavy sound and depth fit well in the CD.
"Summer Sun" follows and fits as well, bringing the album back down a bit in tone and pace, slowing things. This is a light and airy tune, very cool and smooth, and you can hear the sunshine, good stuff. You can hear this tune on "Jazz Lounge" a definite Euro-feel release, which I recommend.
"Bachelor Pad" follows, and it's a fantastic melding of the old and new. This would've worked in any of the mod films of the late 60s, with great fuzzed-out rhythm and lead guitars, and a simple beat and melody to follow. Great dance tune, but again, not too heavy, not pounding or too fast.
Then there's the "Revisited" Panther theme. A better title would've been "Pantha Dub." I swear, my eyes were watering and I was getting hard munchies just bobbing my head with my eyes half-closed to this reggae-fied, horn-heavy yet still very cool take on the original.
I really enjoy the "A Shot in the Dark/Peter Gunn" mix. Very nice phrasing throughout, with most of the original arrangements and sound replicated here. The two themes move in and out of each other very nicely, playing off their sounds and images quite well. One quibble: the track ends way too soon. A great jam like this one should be allowed to run free and have some fun.
"Bossa Per Due" follows, and is a nice, quiet, even haunting chill tune. Good organ punctuation, with smooth female vocals, and nice counterpoint to the drive and humming guitars of the preceding mix.
"Intraspettro" comes next, and is a fantastic addition to this CD. Another piece with a single singing female vocal, it fits perfectly. Great Euro feel and sound, the sound of movement, of adventure, of clear weather and hazy horizons over the Mediterranean. You can find this track also on "Jazz Lounge."
"Tres Tres Chic" is interesting, but the over-enunciated French lyrics quickly become grating. I noticed this also on "Voulez-Vous?" and especially "Sacre Francais," the French ultimately distracting from what are smooth, simple, cool, and enjoyable tunes.
The Panther theme Malibu re-mix concluding the CD is very, very cool, a great closer. This is the sound of James Bond meeting the Panther. It rocks, but again, sadly, the jam just doesn't go on long enough.
In conclusion, this CD is a winner, a fantastic compilation and fitting tribute to the original understated, implicit 60s Panther cool, brought right into the new millennium and updated splendidly. The tracks fit (with a minor exception), compliment the attitude and vibe of the original, and contribute to an overall superb release.

The piano-led small group sessions on Penthouse Serenade bear little resemblance to Cole's trio work. Blues is hardly a factor here, and while his fleet fingers owe a debt to jazz, it's jazz of the most polite sort. The dozen instrumentals (from 1952 and 1955) are like good appetizers, though--while hardly filling, they're fun to nosh on. Seven vocal tracks, including versions of "Too Young" and "Unforgettable," appear as bonus tracks to the '50s LP. --Rickey Wright

The piano is as smooth as the voice.......2000-09-24
PENTHOUSE SERENADE is a very relaxing and soothing bit of music to listen to. As the reviewer said, it's not quite like the music you heard in the early and glory days of his small jazz ensemble, the King Cole Trio. It was criticized by so-called jazz purists back in the day, being labeled as "cocktail piano" and not REAL jazz, but DON'T LET THAT FOOL YOU. This is an excellent instrumental jazz CD! By this time (1952-1955) Nat was at his peak as a pop vocalist who occasionally dabbled in jazz and blues, whereas before, it was the other way around. This expanded version of PENTHOUSE SERENADE (which was followed by another instrumental LP Nat made in '55, THE PIANO STYLE OF NAT KING COLE) is merely a prelude to one of Nat's most successful jazz works, AFTER MIDNIGHT, released a year later ('56). Those of you who are fans of Nat the musician will enjoy this very much. I love to listen to this CD when I'm coming home from work because it is so mellow, and it makes you just wanna ease back and take in every note.
The extra tracks on this CD includes some vocal performances. It was nice hearing different versions of Nat's vocal hits, with the emphasis on his pianistics, such as "Unforgettable", "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" and "Too Young". My personal favs: "I Surrender, Dear" (both takes), "Don't Blame Me", "Penthouse Serenade", "Laura", "Somebody Loves Me", "Little Girl" and "Rose Room"...but everything is wonderful. I highly recommend this! Smooth as Nat's voice itself.

WOW - WOW !!! I have heard a new god! This remaster is beyond comparison. How could I be shocked since the BEF guys behind Heaven 17 were involved with this project - the aural landscape provided in this release is mind expanding. No need for a crappy stepped on X pill. This is a masterpiece. Fresh musical experimentation in the early 80s - truly amazing. As a huge Human League fan, I can only say that, now - without a doubt - H-17 had the soul and energy; if Phil and Martyn could get over whatever happened ...... Am waiting for the 2 other Heaven remasters. This is ear candy with a smart kick in the head and two in each hip. Truly, absolutely groundbreaking - and brilliant.

Good CD. I recommend this product. Buju Banton is a great artist anyway, but the CD is recommendable.
Best of the good old days (4.5 stars).......2007-03-08
This album showcases Buju in his early years before he adopted his Rastafarian faith and became more spirtual. You won't find any conscious roots type songs on here, instead this is just straight up dancehall. My favorite tracks are "Batty Rider," Have Fi Get Yu Tonight," "Love How Di Gal Dem Flex," "Hotness," the infectious "Bogle," "Good Looking Gal," "Gone A Lead," the wicked, bass-heavy "Good Good," the controversial "Boom Bye Bye," "Stamina Daddy," the fast, uptempo "Mine Behind the Wine," the smooth R&B-influenced "Wicked Dickie" (the female singer provides nice vocals), and the last track "Bonafide Love." Although there really isn't a bad song on here, there are a couple of tracks that I feel didn't quite fit the rest of the album such as "Why Should I," and "Miss Joan" (not a bad song, but the chorus is sort of annoying). Conspicuous by their absence are "Man Fi Dead," and "Love Me Browning" (would have been better if these REPLACED the aforementioned tracks). Overall however, it is a excellent compilation from Buju B.
The best.......2005-10-25
The best of his early time . All good songs and exciting tracks.love it...
Good music to dance to.......2005-08-20
All of his early hits. I like about 8 of these tracks still. I couldn't care less about the content of the lyrics since I can't understand what he's saying anyway.
Murder Music.......2004-12-05
If you like homophobic murder music, you'll love this! Banton advocates killing gays and lesbians in a number of songs, and is wanted for questioning in the attack of six gay men. [...]
His song Boom Bye Bye talks about shooting gay men with Uzis as well as pouring acid on their heads. "Burn him up badly, like you would burn an old tyre wheel"

NOT REMASTERED! !! Universal Digital Mastering deception!.......2007-02-27
I pulled this supposed remaster up on Adobe Audition, and aside from it being a few seconds SHORTER, yes shorter, than the Vertigo CD from years ago it is the same! Amazon reviewer "Pattic" is correct..How sad and what a ripp off!!. I tried finding a link for emailing Gary Moore at Universal Digital Mastering but could not find one. Unbelieveable...too late to save tons of people from this sham. 5 stars for Alex & band but this is a product, and as such, weak and deceptive!

The Motthouse Tapes/Live .......2006-09-19
The Sensational Alex Harvey band was formed in 1972, when a thirty eight year old Alex Harvey decided he should have one more crack at the world of rock superstardom. Alex's brother Les had died that year, having been electrocuted on stage by a malfunctioning microphone, with his band `Stone The Crows' in Swansea. Despite a ten year age difference Les and Alex had been close; although devastated by his young brother's death it made Alex even more determined to succeed. He went back to his native Glasgow, Scotland, to check out a bunch of young tearaways who had formed themselves into a hard rock act called `Tear Gas'. Words were spoken, ideas exchanged, and Alex persuaded these young lads to become his band.
In 1968 he had joined as guitarist the London based orchestra pit for Gerome Ragni and James Rado's iconoclastic musical `Hair'. This would have a heavy influence on Alex, making him more aware of the theatrical side of rock music and why it was so important to put on a good show to back up your music. As Alex himself once said he formed `The Sensational Alex Harvey Band' and in turn invented Pantomime rock, with plenty of `boo and hiss' and `look behind you'.
Tear Gas was quickly transformed from the normal long haired rockers in their jeans, boots and T-shirts to characters in Alex's show.
Of course on stage out front was the man himself, Alex Harvey, the first rock `n' roll pirate. Skin tight jeans, dirty red handkerchief hanging out his back pocket, a black and white hooped T-shirt, with Alex's huge head sticking out the neck (he needed a big head to store up all his creative thoughts), a mop of unruly jet black hair on his head, all topped off with a swaggering black great coat.
Zal Cleminson, a staggeringly good lead guitarist in his own right, was persuaded into a skin-tight green cat suit and clown's white slap on his face, which made every gurn of his face during his searing solos turn him from one minute into something quite comical, to the next something quite sinister, the perfect foil for the band leader.
On the other side of the stage with a bass guitar in his hand was Chris Glenn, who would be attempting his Elvis impersonations, but actually coming across more as one of Elvis's body guards. So while all the girls flocked around Alex and Zal, everybody kept their distance from the mean looking bloke on the left.
Behind the drums was Ted McKenna. Every band has to have a rock on which to build on and Ted McKenna was the rock that the `Sensational Alex Harvey Band' was built on, and absolute no nonsense drummer who could also turn his hand to any of Alex's little idiosyncrasies.
On keyboards, holding the whole thing together musically, no matter how far off on a tangent the others went, Hugh McKenna always kept the ship on an even keel, even though he always did look a lot more like a school music teacher than a rock `n' roll star.
So the scene was set for fame, fortune and frolics. Immediately the band started touring, playing anywhere that would have them, all the time working up their act. Vertigo signed them, and released the first album `Framed' (1973), which met with great critical acclaim but little else.
It was on the road, though, that the word was being spread. Seeing that they had a hit band on their hands the executives from Vertigo, smelling money, put the band back in the studio with famous glam rock producer Phil Wainman and gave them an unheard of in those days month off the road to record their next album. When it came out, `Next' (1973) was not an instant hit, but slowly crept up the charts. After more touring, appearing at the Reading Rock Festival, touring as support to Slade, and appearing on the British rock show `The Old Grey Whistle Test', it finally went into the British top thirty in early 1974.
That year the band set about consolidating their position at the top of the rock `n' roll tree, touring all over Europe and releasing another album, `The Impossible Dream' (1974) which went straight into the Top Twenty album charts.
But it was 1975 where they hit pay dirt. `The Sensational Alex Harvey Band' was the largest grossing live act in the U.K. Completing two extensive tours, headlining the Reading Rock Festival, releasing two Top Twenty albums (`Tomorrow Belongs To Me' and a fabulous `Live' album), plus a Top Five hit single with their version of `Delilah'. I do not think that `Top Of the Pops' ever recovered from having this lot on.
After the homecoming Christmas dates in Glasgow at the end of 1975, the band should have been given some time off to recover, particularly their leader. But the record company wanted more product, and the band was put back in the studio. With not much material written for a new album, the decision was made to put out what they had, and fill the rest up with some of the cover versions that they used to play in their live set. This may not sound like such a good idea, but what actually came out as `The Penthouse Tapes' (1976) is a real fun rock `n' roll album.
The album opens up with a fat slice of Glam Rock Alex style in `I Wanna Have You Back', followed by another band original `Jungle Jenny' which is possibly the naughtiest song ever recorded. Then who can resist the band's version of Del Shannon's `Runaway'? A throwaway rock through I. Anderson's `Love Story' and then perhaps the album's highlight, Alex preaches to his boys and girls that when you get freedom within the sweaty grasp of your hand you should hang onto it and not pollute the water supply. The band then breaks into a rampant version of Alice Cooper's `Schools Out', a brilliant piece of musical theatre.
Next up is one of the better known songs in Pattaya, `Goodnight Irene', a Jackie Lomax song. The famous Pattaya Tahitian Queen Rock `n' Roll bar plays this every night to let us all know to go home. Well, Woody better not get his hands on this version, as it starts off in its traditional dreamy manner, but in the hands of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band it is of course soon twisted round into a vicious rocker that would soon have the aisles of Tahitian Queen rocking again.
`Say Your Mine (Every Cowboy Song)' is a gentle parody on Country and Western featuring some fine pedal steel guitar from B.J. Cole. `Gamblin' Bar Room Blues' is sung with such conviction that perhaps somebody from the record company should have realized there was a problem lurking just under the surface. With tongue firmly in cheek the band then rocks through the Osmond's `Crazy Horses', although Alex himself had very serious concerns about the environment having already penned `The Tale Of The Giant Stoneater' from the `Tomorrow Belongs To Me' album, which dealt with green issues. (Those Crazy Horses were actually cars spouting carbon monoxide.) The album closes in style with a lovely tilt at Irvine Berlin's `Dancing Cheek to Cheek'. You just have to remember which cheeks Alex is talking about here.
The Penthouse Tapes charted well, but `The Sensational Alex Harvey Band' never recovered. Alex left the band in 1978 and the band imploded in his absence. Alex formed a new band, but never recovered his former glories and tragically Alex Harvey died of a heart attack while on tour in Europe in 1982, the day before his 47th birthday.
But at the height of their powers, his band was truly sensational.
You can buy `The Penthouse Tapes' as a two for the price of one now. So you get the `Penthouse Tapes' and `Live' for your buck: get onto [...] right now.
Mott the Dog.
Live = 25 stars, Penthouse Tapes =3 stars.......2005-10-26
These two-fer discs can be somewhat annoying for obvious reasons. Often you will have to shell out for an album that you either don't want, or you already have, in order to get one that you do want.
That aside, the classic "Live" is worth the price alone as far as I'm concerned, with the Penthouse Tapes as "bonus disc" ala DVD.
If there are any SAHB fans out there who haven't heard the live album, you need to own this...now. The prevailing opinion of people in these jaded times, is that live albums are pointless, and I'd have to agree. In the days of modern production, and tightly choreographed stage shows, the most compelling reasons to make a live album no longer exist, however, in the 70's there were 2 very good reasons, especially for hard rock and prog-rock outfits:
1) For hard rock/metal bands, the production techniques of the time tended to render the studio albums dry and lifeless. The drums sounded like little shoeboxes and the big, crunchy guitars had barely any distortion at all, due to middle-aged engineers and producers who grew-up on Elvis forcing the guitarists to turn down. But the live versions! Ahh yes. All you need to do is play and old 70's Judas Priest studio album, then put on the live one to understand it all. The guitars were huge and ballsy, and the drums thundered. The live versions were much heavier, simple as that.
2) Bands in those days tended to "jam" and improvise on their material live, so that a 5 minute song on the studio album might be 20 minutes long on the live version, giving you a much different take on the material.
These days of course, that generally isn't the case, but it was back then. And I can't think of a better example than SAHB live.
The version of Faith Healer that kicks off the album is loud, dark and heavy, sounding more like Black Sabbath than the more avant-rock studio version with it's clean, clangy guitar. In fact, it wouldn't be inaccurate to call SAHB live a very quirky and unusal heavy metal album.
Of course, which sound you prefer will be a matter of taste, and you can take this as much as a warning as a recommendation if you tend to dislike heavy rock, but believe you me, if you haven't heard the live versions of these songs, you are definately in for a very different(and for me superior)take on the band's catalogue. Probably my favorite album of all time, and I don't say that lightly.
The Penthouse Tapes takes a lot of flak for being a "quickie throw-away" album full of covers. well, yes, it is that, but I still think it's a fun record, with some great stuff on it (although the cover of Alice Cooper's school's out is pretty awful), and I find myself pulling it out more these days than I used-to.
All in all you can't go wrong here. Vambo still rools ok?
Oh, and as a not insignificant sidenote, these are not remastered. The versions of Live and Penthouse Tapes included here are exactly the same as the previous single Vertigo releases. Yeesh.
Open Your Ears - Please!!!.......2003-11-21
I do not own this particular compilation, but I have two other verisons of each of the single CD releases [and of course I have my trusty old vinyl], and while I applaud the previous reviewer's insight and suggestion to provide an expanded version of LIVE - Please kindly refrain from bashing Penthouse!
Give it a listen - Cheek to Cheek ala Alex!!!
Nothing short of Brilliant!!! And lets not forget Runaway, and School's Out!!! Please!!!
So, I ask that you put your predisposed disposition aside, crank up the volume, open your ears, and let the TAPES blow you away...
[Of course, in case you hadn't noticed, I'm a wee bit biased when it comes to Alex :-)]
Enjoy!!!
