The Album Leaf, a one-man-band project (lavalle of tristeza), releasing the albums "an orchestrated rise to fall" and 'one day i'll be on time', as well as several singles and collaborations. In this ep, recorded exclusively for acuarela, the album leaf constructs scenes of still melancholy, postcards in slow motion, mute and full of question marks. 'malmo', a lazy early bird, reminds us of múm or even four tet, with its vibrant keys and awakening beats. 'Brennivin' is an inspiring and sad crescendo and the homonymous 'Seal beach' wraps it all up beautifully. In 'Christiansands', the guitar lavalle's prime instrument in tristeza, remember is accompanied by "real" drums, in search of a shy slow-core, and "one minute" closes this magnificent ep with nick drake in mind. Album Description

Originally released in Spain in 2003, this very special version of The Album Leaf's Seal Beach EP is finally released in the United States! The Seal Beach EP on Better Looking features four songs from the original EP, plus "For Jonathan," which replaces an original. In addition, Jimmy LaValle has handpicked five live performances from his tour with Sigur Ros, included as bonus tracks - and it's all wrapped up in a beautiful digipack. The Album Leaf is Jimmy LaValle, a classically trained, prolific pianist and musician whose ambitious projects have involved San Diego's seminal ambient post-rock outfit Tristeza, noise punks The Locust and the gloomy, brooding epic-core Black Heart Procession. This special domestic release of the Seal Beach EP follows the recent success of The Album Leaf's critically acclaimed full-length In a Safe Place on Sub Pop Records.

Wake up to your best girl on the beach to this. Or in reality just wake to this killer disc. SOOOOO musical and so grovin 1200 watts cant describe it unless your there!!! Good buy!!!

now I'm all for relaxing, warm music. there are times when I need music that is deceptively simple or even straightforwardly simple. and unchallenging. you know, it's the morning after, and you have to do paperwork.

but with the exception of possibly 1 or 2 songs, this is pretty much just a bore. barely pleasant wallpaper. but it's the barely pleasant which makes you nauseous after looking at it for more than a minute.

if you want quality pastoral post rock or chamber rock or whatever, check out Nudge, the Necks (the album Sex is an amazing starting point), or Town and Country.

Excellent, relaxing CD.......2005-09-13

This is my first experience with The Album Leaf after hearing the title track on the Echoes radio program.

Wonderful, peaceful, relaxing music. I'll definitely be buying more of their work.

I can't recommend this CD enough.

Restless by nature and anxious for the release of the new Sigur Ros - Takk CD I opted for an impulsive purchase to fit the mood of this melancholy, rainy day. Nothing could be more appropriate and dead center as the Seal Beach EP by The Album Leaf (2005 version) that has been reissued as a CD with 5 studio tracks and 5 unreleased live tracks recorded with Sigur Ros while on tour back in 2003.

In the post apocalyptic world of Hurricane Katrina and 4th anniversary of events surrounding 911 the whole post-rock, IMD indie-electronica thing seems more suited to this calm, retrospective listening. As I ponder the human dilemma and that future therein, the low-key songwriting with subtle dynamics coursing throughout, I get a sense of renewed hopefulness that somehow, someway we will get beyond this. There will still be a place of renewed emphasis and appreciation for beauty and art. The creative expression of pain and suffering will serve to heal wounds, extend ties that bind.

It's pouring out side and even if the waters rise to levels of intrusion I will end this day in a better place. In my mind and heart I have already traveled there. I lay listlessly on the sand, all worry taken out with the tides, and this music scores the sonic bliss, the soundtrack of today. Melodies soar as a seagull dives for some unseen treasure, and the waters lap at my feet, keeping meter and pace with these beautiful songs. Now that I hear, I almost feel I can touch this heaven - Seal Beach, the light on the other side of Dark City.

I love this cd. The tracks are beautiful. The live version of Essex is amazing, and was the main reason I purchased this. But everything on here is just beautiful. Total mood music. I recommend it.

i was recomended this over their full length 'one day i'll be on time' by the place i ordered it from. although i'm glad they helped me save some money, i am also very curious to see what 'odibot' sounds like. but for the time being, i am very happy i bought this mini cd. the songs are slow and beautiful and they have a lot of keyboard, piano, whatever cool noises they want. i am a big fan of this, so i fell in love right away. this band (or guy) has just signed onto sub pop, which is cool, and i think they are releasing a full length by summer, but check them out now.

I was at the Eternal Feminine recital at the Ravinia Festival in August 2000. This was a wonderful recital - also a world premiere - the CD is just as wonderful. There is a nice mix of style in the programming of songs. Suzanne Mentzer's interpretations reflect a complete understanding of each piece. Her tone is warm, strong, and beautiful. I highly recommmend this CD as an example of an exceptional classicly trained singer and also as an example of women composers, several of whom are not well know but are deserving of our attention.
