Product Description
The return of the mighty Arnold. Bahama is their 3rd album and possibly their strongest to date. 9 tracks including 'Climb' & 'Tiny Car'. Uncut gave it 4 stars saying, 'Wonderfully timeless, it's breathy, orgasmed-out guitar pop evokes every accidental transcendent moment from Big Star to Bolan, Spector to Pink Floyd, while basking in a Sunday-morning air of it's own invention. This is rich, gorgeous & life affirming'. Poptones / 2001 digi-pack.

4 out of 5 stars This album is a must for your collection, "Panama Red" alone is worth the price of addmission!.......2006-10-15

The Dead, Skynard, Allman Bros. & Eagles mixed into a bowl and fired up! I bought this album solely for "Panama Red" but the entire album turned out to be very enjoyable. The sound of the album is unique but also reminiscent of other bands that were popular at the time of it's release (1973). Mostly, the lyrics are funny but occasionally become introspective. The "drug culture" and language that is present in the songs take you back to a seeminly simpler time, this one is definitely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Country Rock.......2006-03-18

I first bought this album in 1975. Its amazing how after 30 yrs the songs still sound as good as they did way back then. Very good collection of tunes. Half the cd is country and the other half is rock. Total track time is around 30 minutes. Very good music.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me, this rocks........2006-03-16

I see there are already plenty of reviews of Panama Red already, so I really have no excuse for writing my own. All the same...

Firstly, I think people who don't like this album are probably thinking of NRPS as the dead's little sister, which frankly it is not. It has very little to do with the dead. It's psycadelic cowboy rock.
It is also totally fantastic. There is not a song on the album that I don't like.
Here's a mini review of the songs-

"Panama Red"- Totally a classic. First time I heard it I was singing along by the end.
"It's All Right With Me"- Oo-Oo- yeeeaaah, to qoute it.
"Lonesome LA Cowboy"- The lines about smokin' dope, snortin' coke are great. Heck, the whole song is.
"(Ok Sam)Important exportin' man"- Very catchy. Greatest saxaphone.
"One Too Many Stories"- Oh, woe. The only one I couldn't call my favorite. But it's still fine.
"Kick in the head"- Absolutely my favorite. The lyrics are bizarre and typicle Robert Hunter. (Funny the dead never preformed it)
"You Should Have Seen Me Runnin"- Lord. Buffy Sainte-Marie is the greatest back up ever. I don't know why there isn't more of her and less of Donna Jean. (???)
"Teardrops in My Eyes"- I can't help dancing when this plays. Happiest sad song ever.
"L.A Lady"-Really well done. Good singing, good music, good lyrics. What more could you ask for?
"Thank the Day"- Typical Torbert (It's about sailing). The lyrics "I couldn't keep from smiling" must apply to the listener.
"Cement, Clay and Glass"- Wait a sec. THIS is my favorite. Great anti urban sprawl song.
I have only one beef, and trust me it's not the song's fault. I guess when they put it onto cd they changed it a little, because at the end when he (David Nelson, I think. Don't qoute me) is singing "Cement, Clay and Glass" over and over you can hear Donna Jean Godchaux singing signifigantly louder than the he is. This isn't a problem on the record (I know because I have it), just the Cd.

Thats it for the songs, but I think I should mention one other thing thats unfortunate: the packaging for the Cd is not nearly as exciting as it was for the record. The fantastic Panama Red cartoon is rather squashed. Aslo, the sleave that had the lyrics and the picture of NRPS with the grungy dog is not reproduced anywhere.
Thats really all, and, frankly, I can deal with the two small drawbacks because the CD means I can listen to it in the car, lend it to my friends, whatever.

It's pretty hard to dislike the New Riders, so you should definatley give this Cd a try.

5 out of 5 stars Hippie Culture USA.......2005-10-24

First..Woody Guthrie, then Easy Rider, then the Byrd's Sweetheart Of The Rodeo then The New Riders...this rock and roll country and western offshoot of the Dead came into their commercial heyday with these bright unashamed batch of songs.
Their self titled debuet is the most Dead like, their 2nd Powerglide pushed them into speedier funkier grooves while Gypsy Cowboy defined them in a more roots folk setting.
Panama Red became their anthem as the Merry Pranksters of rock culture.
Of course the themes of many of the songs are somewhat comical these days but eventhough the CD is a short one the songs and tunes are alive and still sound fresh. The ballads have beautiful melody, the rockers rock like Commander Cody and the production was top-notch for it's day with bright loud lovely sound.
Their ist release with Garcia and company is a classic..this is the one to forget your troubles with.

3 out of 5 stars What was once entertaining..........2005-07-19

I listened to a lot of this type of stuff in high school. I think it's an okay album but one grows tired of the many cheesy drug references. The two songs on the album that I think have stood the test are the ones that have little flash compared to the signature numbers on the album. "Teardrops in my Eye" is a cover an old Red Allen country number. It works fine on this album. "Cement, clay and glass" a song about urban sprawl was appropos in the 70s and is so now.

I tip my hat to Jerry for prodding his pals to do some country. I'm glad this album was made and I listened to it a lot in the 70s. I'll likely enjoy an occasional track should I ever hear them somewhere but only some of the album has stood the test of time.

1 out of 5 stars AS USUAL TIESTO PUTS OUT TRASH!!!!!.......2007-06-13

IF YOU LIKE TO SUFFER AND ENJOY TORTURE THEN BUY THIS ALBUM, TIESTO PLEASE I BEG YOU, GO AWAY AND LEAVE US ALL ALONE> The almighty god of the sound of torment gives us one more reason to hate him. Do not be decieved, this album and any other with his name on it will leave you wondering who this fool is!! if you want something nice buy AVB 2006 or DEEP TRANCE produced by water music records.

5 out of 5 stars His best I've heard........2007-05-07

I've only heard Tiesto's Sunrise 3, 4, and 5 albums (plus a few tracks from various other albums), and this is by far my favorite. I think there's a perfect harmony between the songs in this CD. The slower tracks, like number 2, still sound really good even though I prefer faster tracks, like number 9. I'm going to keep listening to Tiesto and I have to keep purchasing his albums, cuz evidently, I have many more to go.

4 out of 5 stars well crafted.......2007-01-19

DJ Tiesto's Panama is well done, even almost after five years later. I am not a fan of pure progressive or progressive-led trance, thus I tend to be bias towards the more "melody" or "uplifing" trance...in my opinion there is a greater chance to tell a story in the instrumental if done judiciously. I feel that DJ Tiesto does this very well on the first two tracks. The early vocals are a little weak. The third track falls a little flat but the fourth recovers momentum and rhythm. The next three tracks flow very well together...good work by Tiesto.

Some weakness is the middle of the work. The song selection is flat, I felt the album was taking a direction (expecting it to go right but hung left instead). Nonetheless, the songs do "fit" into the "mix." But I was disappointed with the Oakenfold selection. A good artist to be sure, but I feel this track of Oakenfold is often overplayed, almost as if obligatory. My criticism here is song selection. The final part of the album transitions into a nice crescendo. I feel the "Way Out West" track was greatly misplaced in the context with the rest of the final tracks--definitely breaks into the work.

By large, the album is well crafted. I would not say the BEST - 5 STARS because there are obvious areas I think that could be improved upon. Not a flawless album, but it is surely an enjoyable one to have.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2006-11-25

I would rate this album higher if it had been produced by another DJ, but I consider it to be weak compared to the rest of the ISOS series (as of November 2006). Whereas 4 and 5 have shown Tiësto's ability to produce progressive trance albums and 1 and 2 were flawless melodic compilations, this album falls short in both areas.
In Search of Sunrise: Panama is weak for several reasons. First off, it is a single CD, hence shorter than the most recent ISOS compilations. Second, the album starts out very slow and stays there up until the very end which is not the case with the other ISOS, which had and have shown Tiësto's full spectrum.

In all honesty if I would only purchase this album if I was collecting the full series (which I have done already) else I would skip and go for the other four.

5 out of 5 stars The Razor's Edge Of Trance.......2006-06-18

First, I would like to say that the album design of In Search Of Sunrise 3 - Panama is unimpressive. The purple text of the title is hard to read over the background, and the photos are not alluring... until you pull off the album sleeve and see the beautiful album cover shot!

This mix is justice.

While In Search Of Sunrise 2 was a great addition to the In Search Of Sunrise series, ultimately, it couldn't compare with the original.

Panama can.

Tiësto has defined trance once again. He is the man.

Noa Assembly may be the most epic opening of all the ISOS series. It lets you know Tiësto is not playing any games on this volume. Through the first half of this mix, emotions run deeper than on any ISOS album. Even the first volume cannot compare with the emotional efficacy of the first half of this album. From the first track, you're off to another world. Tiësto takes his time building with this mix, and that's what makes it so effective. It's unbelievable. It's perfection. He spends the first three tracks on a slow and steady climb. The tracks are absolutely consistent. The Grand Chillas Mix of Hear You Now by DJ Hooligan lays the smack down. I love Tiësto for introducing me to songs like this. This song evokes feelings I can't describe. I recall feelings of unrequited love while listening to it. I don't even know what to say. And the mix into Starecase's Faith (Loafer Mix)... MAN!!!!! I shook my head in disbelief the first time I heard it.

The song picks up and... it's ineffable. Nobody can do what Tiësto does... "Waiting for the sun... I need to know if you are there to... carry me home." Hands down to Loafer and Starecase for this song. The bass line, the ambience, the vocals, the phasing, the effects: it's all too good to be true. The mixing style is so amazing that I cannot even elaborate. You simply must hear it. It's perfect. Tiësto's song selection is what makes him such an amazing DJ. I've listened to most of his mixes and I'm not sure if he'll ever top what he does on the first half of this album. This isn't high energy trance... it's SPIRITUAL trance. The mix into Summer's Calling continues Tiësto's demonstration of a DJ at the top of his form. It all sounds as if it was meant to be. And with headphones on, it's bliss. I can usually organize my thoughts well in reviews but this album sets me off. It's so hard to describe how brilliant this mix is. And I'm saying this at track 4.

When Solar Stone's Solar Coaster comes in, it's obvious that the game is over. This is an absolute classic!!! I bow to Solar Stone. They are known for amazing songs, but this song brings me to tears. The synthesized guitar riff kills me. And "you're so cool..." my eyes swell up just thinking about it. I don't care what anybody says. For any of those who can relate to trance, for those who have lost something they can't get back, for those who were fans of Tiësto prior to hearing this mix, when this song comes on, if goosebumps and tears don't hit you, you missed something. This is the beauty and glory of trance! This song completely sweeps me away. Songs like these make life worth living. That's the bottom line.

We're only through a third of the mix.

The Steve Gibbs Mix of Meia Lua is the signal that a new phase of the mix is beginning. The energy level is rising. The trance effects here are excellent. The synth sounds from the previous songs, some trippy vocals, and some other melodies that I don't have the capacity to describe make this awesome song take the mix forward with grace. And then the Gabriel & Dresden Mix of In My Memory creeps in. Anyone truly familiar with Tiësto knows that In My Memory is one of the best original compositions he will ever make. Gabriel & Dresden respect Tiësto's classic by producing an astounding remix. It's so frustrating to describe great songs like these. The lyrics, the effects of the remix, the tribal sound, and the build... it's nuts. During the break, an unbelievably intoxicating melody surfaces that takes you right into the breakdown. It's euphoric. THIS IS TRANCE!!! SERIOUSLY!!! BUY THIS FREAKING CD!!! AHHHHH!!!!! It's madness!!! Seven Tracks have gone by and I don't have one complaint.

But, if there is one song that comes close to making me complain, it has to be the next track: Your Body Is A Temple. Mix wise, the song is necessary. I've noticed that Tiësto uses at least one track on every mix that is relatively out of place in comparison to the rest of the mix. This is that track. But in all honesty, the track is awesome. There are stereo pans and field rotate effects that make the song a delight, especially with headphones on. It takes the energy of the mix even higher with trance elements that are harder and darker than those of any of the previous songs. And it mixes perfectly into World Clique's Don't Do It. Don't Do It makes you want to do it! This song has serious house elements. The robotic sound effects rule. The break with the tribal pipe sounds trips me out. The song's break is ambient joy, and the build is all business. The vocal that repeats over the breakdown is hypnotic. There are actually two builds, and the second one is more serious than the first. After the second build Tiësto sweeps you right into the Shelly Mix of Stringz Ultd. The melodies here are ridiculously consistent with the mix. It all makes sense. This mix is so consistent! The build on this song is deafening. The breakdown is fantastic. Energy wise, it is one of the highest points of the mix. And as a result, Tiësto takes the next logical step: slow it down.

Southern Sun is one of the greatest trance songs ever made. Without being over the top and without being filled with sirens and excessively dense builds, this song sends you into a state of bliss. "I still feel you beneath my skin... I am tempted to throw my senses in... `cause its easier to fly than to face another night in southern sun." The melodies, the chorus of voices in the background, the bass line... all of it make this song is among the greatest. "Pieces of the wind..." THIS IS EPIC TRANCE! Tiësto lifts Paul Oakenfold's song into the heavens with his remix. This is one of the best driving songs around. This song is a classic. At this point, Tiësto is challenging the original In Search Of Sunrise's seat at the throne.

But it's hard to outdo a song like Southern Sun. Tiësto takes the mix into deep trance with Accessive Rhythm's Activate. This isn't a strong point in the mix... but it's a track that necessarily separates one great track from another. The Gabriel & Dresden remix of Way Out West's Mindcircus is a definite highlight. Of The album's second half, this is the strongest reminder that you are listening to an In Search Of Sunrise mix. It expresses how great Gabriel & Dresden are. I mean, Tiësto features them twice on one mix. They are some of the best remix producers around. The driving beat here is mind numbing. The effects on the vocals are euphoric. This is the perfect cross between trance and house. "Almost ready to drift now... and I feel myself slipping inside you." Tiësto knows what the crowd wants. Love and Lust are what define the In Search Of Sunrise series. I have the utmost respect for Gabriel & Dresden for this song. I cannot imagine the damage a song like this would do to a dance floor. I can only hope that one day I will find out.

Nalin & Kane... anybody remember beachball? That is an all-time trance classic, so I expect great things from them. Open Your Eyes is no slouch. At this point I am reminded again that Tiësto knows better than anyone how to use individual songs to suit his purpose for a mix. Tracks 10 through 15 follow a sort of up and down pattern with each track, and I sense that was his idea. Anyway, the keyboard melodies on this song are good. They are too repetitive to make the song great, but the hyper trance melodies that accompany them at 3 minutes into the song (and earlier in the song, only briefly) make the song suit the mix well. It doesn't really matter, because this song exists only to prepare the listener for the last hurrah: Jericho's Personal Reflexion.

Just like In Search Of Sunrise 2, Tiësto's last desire is to send you away in a trance, and the final track fulfills this goal remarkably well. It takes you higher and higher, to a point so high with such screaming symphonic melodies that you want to jump out of your body and soar into space. The final track is extremely dramatic. It ends the mix with magnificent power. Tiësto sends you away baffled.

This is essential trance. You must buy this album. It's much better than the second In Search Of Sunrise. Unfortunately, I have to admit that ultimately, it does not surpass the original In Search Of Sunrise.

But at times, it makes you wonder...

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Poor Remaster.......2007-01-16

As you would suspect with a bargain twofer, the best equipment wasn't utilized to remaster this. I guess we get what we pay for. I'm not saying it's so bad that you wouldn't enjoy it - it's fine for casual listening. Just don't expect it to sound even close to what the debut album, or even Powerglide, sound like after Sony remastered them. That said, it's great music, especially Gypsy Cowboy.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply sublime........2004-08-30

Reaing the prior reviews I was surprised to discover that Gypsy Cowboy had not had a release here in the United States. Why was I surprised? Well mainly because I have a copy which I purchased in Record Savings in Banbury, Oxfordhire over ten years ago.

I am also surprised because Gypsy Cowboy is such a great album. In some ways it is the epitome of the whole cowboy rock or country rock which began with the Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo and which later blossomed and reinvigorated much of the two genres.

This album is consistently good throughout beginning with the soulful Gypsy Cowboy which no-one could imagine to be the first choice of DJs to play on the radio but which sets the tone and standard for the rest of the album to follow.

This band had finally escaped from the shadow of the Grateful Dead although my strongest feeling about this is that it is very close in feel to Garcia's first album and highlights his own skill with the pedal steel guitar. It is clear too that the songwriting talents of Dawson and Torbet werein some competition with each other producing some very high quality songs indeed.

Some of the standard themes are clearly in evidence, illegal whiskey running and trying to escape the taxman and the finding of gold during the goldrush days testify to the attractions of the cowboy image of individuality and finding your own way in life while the conflicting images of women portrayed in Groupie and Linda as well as She's No Angel are clearly articulating the contentious dichotomy which they play in men's lives.

The highlight for me of this album has to be Death and Destruction not only because of the subject matter which compares historic human disasters against the then contemporary anti-capitalistic view of the American way of life which the musicians had rejected in favour of the earlier rugged individualistic cowboy era. The lyrics are very evocative and bring horrific images to mind while the music skillfully complements those images but soars into the stratosfear nevertheless. Apocalyptic in more senses than one.

Others have remarked upon the individual musicians and with whom I heartily concur but this is certainly a case not of their being "there are are no I's in Team" but of "Team is made up of I's". Certainly their reputations as individual musicians was already high but this combination is greater than that.

Revisiting this album some twenty-two years after it's release, it is surprising in some ways, but not in others, hhow new and refreshing this album sounds today. A classic of it's time which I would sum up in one word...

    ...sublime.

    5 out of 5 stars Gypsy Cowboy-Great lost classic.......2003-04-18

I am so psyched this finally came out on Cd,because this is one of the if not the best psychedelic country rock album ever.
Songs of love, whisky.great open spaces and groupies are backed
by the rythem section of Spencer Dryden(Jefferson Airplane) on
drums and Dave Torbert on bass. David Nelson's country tinged
lead guitar and Buddy Care's scorching and beautiful pedal steel
fill out the sound landscape. Country music with a rock beat they said. If you saw the riders in concert in the early seventies
they tore up halls thruout the country. Finally "Death and
Destruction" is worth the price by itself. A 12 minute plus
rocking jam highlighted by Cage's scorching steel this song
should have got the same type of recognition as something like
"Green grass and high tides" by the Outlaws. This album makes
is one of those great records most people never heard. Now you
    have your chance.Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Gypsy Cowboy, the long lost under-appreciated NRPS disc.......2001-10-29

Gypsy Cowboy was the first release of the New Riders featuring Buddy Cage that was complete in its selection of music and production.

It achieved a higher plain of "psychedelic ranger" exploration than any of their previous and subsequent releases and was the most enjoyable ranking slightly above the debut album.

John Dawson's lyric composition and mornful singing came as close to 3 dimensional as any on this release.

Buddy Cage's pedal steel coloration added great depth, as well.

Dave Torbert and David Nelson never overstated their playing, singing and compostional contributions.

To have this released with the more "commercial" (can this music ever be considered commercial?) Panama Red is all any NRPS fan could want.

If this is your band, then this is your disc.

Don't let this one slip away.

    5 out of 5 stars I Remember When.......2000-12-21

These are the 3rd and 4th albums with the band at their peak. No longer under the shadow of the Dead, they were burning up the stages across the country with Buddy Gage kickin ass on his steel guitar. With Panama Red, the were the epitomy of the long haired, dope smoking Country Rock band. Panama Red is a must for a New Rider fan. Gypsy Cowboy is a wonderful plus,as this is the first time it has been available

I was doing a Powerpoint presentation on Panama with my class. They loved the music, it introduced them to music they had never heard before. I also look forward to playing this CD at my annual BBQ, my parents will be proud! :)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT OVERLOOKED MUSIC.......2006-08-03

This is just great music. The producer has made a tastefully selection in each track of the compilation. The result, is nothing less than a magnificent overview of the diversity of Panamanian music. A diversity that can only be trace to the multiethnic background of the people of the isthmus. You can enjoy pure original soul music (tracks 12, 9, 2 ) with such a good quality that can easily be compare with that produced by Afro-American legends...Panamanian Calypso is gratefully vindicated by Lord Cobra, probably the most important calypsonian of the Caribbean during the sixties and seventies. His version of "Rocombey" is just amazing. In the other hand, you can find original and exclusive Salsa Music.... In my opinion this is the Panamanian version of Buena Vista Social Club..... Don't miss it....

5 out of 5 stars This is an incredible album.......2006-08-01

I was born in 1976, so i guess i missed all of this, i am from Panama and i can honestly say that this album blew my mind, being a music enthusiast i am always searching for seventies combos nacionales music and had heard some funk and calypsos from the country, but this pieces i didn't know existed until i bought this cd.
If you want to know just how good Panamenian music can be, this is where you should start.

Ruben Blades puts in a dynamic performance, recorded in New York, that shows why he is known foremost as a singer rather than a film star or politician. The native Panamanian has a distinctive take on Salsa, combining an innate jazz sensibility along with Salsa's inherent dance grooves. His band Son del Solar is one of the best in the business, following Blade's warm and personal vocals through every move with some great solos and arrangements. Several of his successes are featured, such as "Pedro Navaja" and "Todos Vuelven," and "Muevete" gets a scintillating 12-minute workout. With a little Caribbean influence in the mix, Live delivers a smooth punch with a velvet glove that will definitely rock you. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Not a huge salsa fan but this is a touchstone.......2006-09-04

I have not been put on this planet to celebrate pan-Hispanic culture, but what can I say? This collection of toons makes my teeth sweat. The power of the vibe here is nuclear, I kid you not.

Ruben's output over the years has been patchy from where I sit, but he makes not a wrong move in this collection. The Son del Solar are gods one and all.

Buy this platter and feel the power.

    5 out of 5 stars RUBEN'S BEST WORK........2004-12-30

ALTHOUGH NOT THE FIRST ALBUM I OWNED OF RUBEN, CERTAINLY THIS ONE COMBINES HIS POWERFUL MESSAGES WITH ONE HELL OF A PERFORMANCE BY THE BAND. THE ADRENALINE STARTS PUMPING FROM THE FIRST SONG AND LEAVES YOU DANCING AND WANTING MORE BY THE END OF THE NIGHT. IF YOU OWN JUST ONE RUBEN BLADES CD, THIS ONE IS IT. BTW, the first time I bought this cd, some of the tracks didn't play well on ANY cd player. I noticed that only a partial album is available at i-Tunes and that the same songs that gave me trouble are the ones missing from their list too... maybe mine wasn't the only bad copy out there

5 out of 5 stars Ruben Blades and Son de Solar Live!.......2003-08-11

Ruben Blades and Son de Solar's Live! is a refulgent live album. I have the tape version containing an extra track on it-Patria. Son de Solar sounded remarkably well. It is not surprising since Son de Solar is one of the best concomitant bands Blades can have: Marc Quiñones and Izbarra-I misspelled his name but nevertheless one of the best timbaleros in Latin jazz-taking care of the rhythm section.

Live! segues through most of Blades' Elektra -post- FANIA days repertoire starting with Decisiones and with the denouement of laudatory live renditions of Patria- cassette version only- and Muevete. The latter is a Los Van Van song showing Blades' openness to the seemingly modern and `electric' Cuban rumba. Blades' sonero voice is timeless as usual. The downside is that Live! seems to come up short and that might be explained because it is missing FANIA classics- except for Pedro Navaja. Notwithstanding, even without the FANIA classics, this album is filled with worth post-FANIA exemplars.

5 out of 5 stars El poder de la letra.......2001-10-03

      Album Description

Songs of THE BEATLES…with a Cuban TWIST.

Here Comes…el Son merges the spirit of The Beatles with the soul of Cuban music. It offers Beatles fans a rare bifocal musical experience: familiar Fab Four tunes rendered in grassroots Afro-Cuban rhythms. This musically rich CD also presents the music enthusiast with an exotic compilation of songs of the most famous Rock 'n Roll group in the world in styles never heard before.

      HISTORICAL FACTS
Banned in Cuba during the early years of the revolution, Beatles music managed to break through and establish a following that endures to this day in Cuba. HCES emerges from that following as the FIRST record of Beatles songs played in traditional Cuban musical rhythms. It is also the FIRST record performed in English by Cuban musicians residing in Cuba.

4 out of 5 stars More substance than not.......2005-04-21

I was surprised by this album overall, as there were new takes on classics. Some do fall a little flat for my taste. But the simple act of recording it and paying homage to the brits was revolutionary if you believe the history behind this. Some cuts are a bit abrupt, as the syncopation and melodics seem to work against each other in a frenzy of forced rhythm that is neither here nor there. But when they get it all together it's magical. A good effort, original... with the heart in the right place and the harmonies do it justice. Only a couple may trascend the original. I'll never think of hello, goodbye the same way again. And here comes the sun glows with the light of a caribbean sunset, with the strumming of the "tres". While And I love her gains a wistful sweetness.

      5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2004-08-23

Very warm, thoughtful and enjoyable. A gem. Has a "sad" longing sound, the players must really want to be in Havana -without Castro- to have inadvertely influx that sadness in their adaptation's dna.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Latin Music Lovers!!!.......2004-03-04

As a musician and a Lover of the Beatles and Latin Music, This
CD adds style and Flavor to several popular Beatle songs.
From the upbeat Afro drums of "Hey Jude", to the romantic blend of percussion in "And I Love Her" to the a capella rendition
      of "Because" {all sung with a really nice Spanish accent}

The Beatles captured the sound of a generation, this CD caputers
the soul of that sound through diverse Latin arrangements.

This is truly a valuble part of my muisc collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent........2004-02-17

Although making versions of already famous songs guarantees success, these musicians have paid due respect to them by accompanying the lyrics with beautiful arrangements. You'll be delighted.

      2 out of 5 stars Cuban Cheese.......2003-05-14

I'm usually a fan of "tribute" CD's, unfortunately I found this one to be a disappointment. A few of the selections have interesting rhythmic and acappella arangements, "Because" and "Hello Goodbye". But most of it just comes accross as rather cheesy. It sort of sounds like a Carribean cruise ship band recorded this. It could use a little more edge. Where's Ry Cooder when you need him?

Ruben Blades and the innovative group Seis del Solar delivered something very special with this album. The spirit of Buscando America ("Looking for America") is defined by a restless, searching attitude and a willingness to struggle with deep issues and to confront painful parts of life with strength and resolve. This is a groundbreaking work that adapts global influences, such as the doo-wop intro to "Decisiones" and the reggae underpinnings of "Desapariciones," into a cohesive and powerful musical vision of what Latin American music can be. It engages the mind, touches the heart, and definitely provokes the dancing feet. Even if you don't understand Spanish, the vocals will grab you, and before they let you go, you just might find yourself inspired to learn the language so that you can understand Blades's profound poetry. --Jeff Grubb

        5 out of 5 stars Viva Panama!.......2003-11-11

Y'know, I was fortunate enough to visit Panama for my Honeymoon. We vacationed for about 3 weeks throughout this luscious isthmian oasis.

My (now) ex-wife is from Da Bronx NY via Colon, Panama.
I was completely in-love w/ her... and Oh, what a knockout!
So it's no surprise that I became deeply interested (and ultimately patriotic) with her homeland.
I was THE honorary (gringo) Panamanian for awhile>ha! ha!
It's a truly beautiful country and they've offered so much to this planet's growth & progress on many levels.
For hours at a time, she & I would listen to old Fania records together... Of course she loves Ruben!

I must also mention how my Dad turned me onto Mr. Blades back in the day. As a young musician, he directed me towards the intricate (yet flowing) arrangements, cascading (yet memorable) melodies and very thoughtful (and politically right-down-my-alley) lyrics of Ruben & his worthy constituents.
Alone one night in NYC, when dashing back to the bar at a Gilberto Gil concert, I ran into Ruben. He was simply sitting there talking to a few friends. I was nervous, yet poised to talk to him. I explained how I felt about his music and politics. We had a very cool chat...What a genuinely NICE GUY!!! :-) Feeling guilty, I got his autograph for my (then) wife. She was pretty envious of my experience.

Now, I know what y'all are thinking --
There isn't a whole lotta continuity in this post of mine. But hey, I'm just reflecting on some vivid thoughts. Memories of a man I greatly admire, whose music will forever remind me of the woman I cared so much about...
This I celebrate, singing and dancing the tears away.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant except for 2 cuts.......2001-12-13

Buscando America - the title cut is just absolutely amazing. It literally brings tears to my eyes sometimes when I hear it. And I don't even speak the language. So I apologize if i'm missing some of the beauty in the lyrics. I'm coming at it purely for the music, arrangements, and emotion. The music is just brilliant and the singing is emotional and evocative. I'd probably ball like a baby if I could speak the language.

Padre Antonio Y... is a great cut as well. Some of the music (on the album) is extremely sophisticated and particularly engaging.

Cuts #2, and #3 don't really turn me on that much but all the rest are great stuff. That's the reason for the 4 stars rather than 5. But still... Highly recommended

        5 out of 5 stars excelente.......2001-08-29

5 out of 5 stars un reflejo de nuestra tierra.......2000-12-07
