Contemporary folk/rock at its best!.......2006-03-26
I discovered the Bacon Brothers recently, through their debut album FOROSOCO. Having immensely enjoyed that particular record, I was slightly disappointed--at first--by the sleeker production of WHITE KNUCKLES. After a while, though--say, when "Unhappy Birthday" kicks into overdrive--I realized that change isn't always a bad thing...in fact, sometimes it's pretty darn good.
This is an album that will make you think. Whether it's the bitter irony of "What Am I Gonna Do Now," "Good News," and "Playboy," or the healing of "Unhappy Birthday," or the heartbreak of "Tuesday" and "Hasn't Got a Heart," or the yearning of "Get Away With It" and "Peace Dance," or...hell, you get the idea. WHITE KNUCKLES is a stellar record by two talented musicians--Kevin and Michael Bacon have forged some great records and some incredible songs, and this album stands as testimony that there is still hope out there for rock 'n roll.
Couldn't wait to get this after hearing you on "Queer Eye" (says this GRANNY).......2006-02-04
Kevin and Michael, you are now an added treasure in my music collection. I am listening to "White Knuckles" for the first time as I write. Wow, there's some great music and the sound of your folky voices are purely to my liking. I play guitar so can appreciate the 6's and 12's going on. Terrific sounds!
NOW I HAVE ONE BEEF ! Please, on your next album, don't save a buck by allowing the designer to use fonts SO SMALL that they can't be read. I can't read them and first thing I wanted to do was read your lyrics.
MICHAEL - Loved your "makeover". Those Queer Guys are great, aren't they?
I don't know how you made it this far without me but I assure you, I'll be along for the rest of the ride. Wish I could afford all your albums now...... I'll be listening. Keep on keeping on............Bacon Boys! AND THANKS !
Well worth the wait!.......2005-11-27
I have been a huge fan since the Can't Complain CD came out. I had heard them on Howard Stern and ever since then I have bought every CD they had made, including their live DVD. I have seen them in concert 4 times and during the last 3 times I had seen them over the course of 2 and a half years they played some of the songs from this CD. Songs like Tuesday, Unhappy Birthday, and especially Peace Dance I couldn't wait to have them in my collection. It felt like forever until they announced the release of White Knuckles for download so I downloaded it and it was worth the wait. Although I wished I had waited for the hard copy CD because there are 2 extra songs on the later version that are not available to download so I would have to buy an entire CD just for 2 songs. Peace Dance is my favorite of the CD, with a great beat. Tuesday is a sad song that incorporates Michael's chello in a way that the cello seems to be having a conversation with the lead guitar at the end of the song. Unhappy Birthday is also a meloncholy song about 9/11 that has a 60's sound to it. Other great upbeat songs are Good News, Write a Song, and What Am I Gonna Do?
The entire CD is great and I strongly recommend the hard copy, not the download version. Buy it today!
Another Great One.......2005-11-03
I accidentally found The Bacon Brothers on a library CD rack and have been a huge fan ever since. My all time favorite used to be their Forosoco CD and it was hard to love the newer stuff as much as the old stuff(although I always eventually did), but with this new CD the love was instant. After downloading it in September it has had constant play in my CD changer ever since. Listen carefully to the lyrics, they make the songs not just fun to listen to, but fun to sing along to. Be sure to check out "Get Away" and "Good News", my two new favorites. "Tuesday" is pretty powerful also. Great job by a great band!
WOW!.......2005-11-02
Talk about a quantum leap! The Bacon Brothers have been a decent band from their first album forward, but this new one is at a different level from the others. Yes, there are distinct influences of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, James Taylor, and even Donovan, but this band has proven that they are now in the same league with those acts, (well maybe not the Beatles)- and they prove it with every song on the disc. This is not just Michael and Kevin - this is a complete unit who have jelled into one of the best bands recording this type of music. More rock and roll than their previous albums - and oh so good. Too bad they will not get taken seriously. My Guess is that the critics won't give this band the credit it deserves because they can never get past the fact that a movie star is in the band. Too bad. Buy the album anyway.

The Bacon Brothers' third CD sounds like the work of bar-band regulars who've found themselves in a real studio with some real money. Prolific actor Kevin Bacon and his music-biz-vet brother, Michael, stretch out on the opener, "Paris," which is marked by polyrhythmic drums, over-the-top orchestration, and the raspy Knopfler/Springsteen affectations of Kevin. Lyrically, the brothers veer from straightforward, earnest love songs ("Sooner or Later") to something more topical (baby boomers get a sound thrashing on "Summer of Love [Woodstock '99]" and the alt-country effort "Don't Leave the Lava Lamp on for Me"). Flat storytelling, meanwhile, mars the likes of "Paris" and "Baby Steps." Still, while Can't Complain is far from groundbreaking, it's an easy listen for fans of tie-dyed rock. --Kelly Minnis
Customer Reviews:
Can't Complain.......2003-05-14
These legitimate musicians put together another work of fantastic brilliance. I first heard "Bus," "Can't Complain," and most of the other songs on this album in concert and bought the album the next day! Kevin's lyrics are witty and his brother's musicianship is amazing. This album has great range in emotion from humorous to serious and symphonic to old school rock n' roll. If you somewhat liked the other CDs, then get this one; if you like Kevin Bacon, then get this one; if you like music, then get this one!!
YEAH BOYS!.......2003-05-13
This is my new Favorite CD. These guys are SO Good. Every song is a special treat. DON'T Wait! Buy it Today. You won't be able to keep it out of your player!
The Bacon Brothers ROCK!.......2003-03-15
"Can't Complain" is the third Bacon Brothers CD, and is just as awesome as the first two. If you haven't already listened to them, DO IT NOW! You can't help but be happy when you listen to their "...clever lyrics and an awesome band..." (From the song TMI on the album "Getting There").
AWSOME!.......2003-02-13
This is the most played CD I own. Its a little bit of everything. And even after all the times I've played it, it still has the power to make me smile while I'm singing along.
Bacon Brothers do it again!.......2003-02-08
As usual, they have produced an awesome album! The lyrics are clever, the music styles are varied, and the vocals are awesome. Whether you like a little country, rock, soul or folk in your music, they have it all.

Hillbillies on acid?.......2003-04-01
Great for Bacon lovers and vegetarians alike. Nonsense lyrics and wild careening animals sounds, as well as a ubiquitous use of bells. This music cacaphonous and dissonant, but you can't help but jump up and down and feel good listening to it. Maybe it's just my restless-leg syndrome acting up, but I just can't keep still. A brilliant mix of folk, klezmer, and eastern styles. You Must Listen!
Fairweather Friends of Satan.......2001-07-31
This CD is an incredible lark and feels ever so much like the first time you blasted down the boulevard in you friend's mom's honda accord with colostomy bags in tow like just married cans

Album Description
Ernst Bacon was one of that pioneering generation of composers, along with Thomson, Copland, Harris and others, who found a voice for American music. Born in Chicago on May 26, 1898, his Austrian mother gave him a love of song and an early start on the piano. Although his varied career included appearances as pianist and conductor, along with teaching and directing positions, his deepest preoccupation was always composing. His musical awards included a Pulitzer Fellowship in 1932 for his Symphony in D Minor and three Guggenheim Fellowships.
As a composer, Bacon belonged to no school and followed no fads. He was largely self-taught in composition, except for two years study with Karl Weigl in Vienna in the early '20s. While there, he experienced the depression of post-war Europe first hand and concluded that the European avant-garde movement, reflecting the pessimism of that era and region, was not appropriate to America. Returning to Chicago, he set out to write music that expressed the vitality and affirmation of our own country.
At the age of nineteen, while majoring in mathematics at Northwestern University, Bacon wrote a complex treatise exploring all possible harmonies, which was published by The Open Court Publishing Company (Our Musical Idiom, The Monist, October 1917). However, when he began to compose music in his twenties, he rejected a cerebral approach, taking the position that music is an art, not a science. He felt that its source should be intuitive and imaginative, rather than abstract and analytical.
From his first job as opera coach at the Eastman School in the mid '20s, he went on to receive a master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley and to teach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under Ernest Bloch. During
the '30s he was director of the WPA Federal Music Project and Orchestra in San Francisco and was a founder of the Carmel Bach Festival. From 1938 to 1945 he headed the School of Music at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he established the New Spartanburg Music Festival. At Syracuse University, he was director of the School of Music from 1945 to 1947 and composer-in-residence and professor of piano until his retirement in 1963.
In 1964 he returned to the West, settling in the small town of Orinda, California, east of the Berkeley hills. Here, as everywhere else, he drew his greatest inspiration from nature, jotting down notes as he explored local trails. His fertile imagination and constant creative efforts left little time for self-promotion, and although nearly blind in old age, he continued to compose until the very end of his ninety-one years.
Throughout his long career, Ernst Bacon's chief aim as a composer was to express the spirit of America in music as Whitman, Emerson, Melville and others had done in literature. He was deeply immersed in our country's history and folklore, as well as its indigenous music; and was inspired by the poetry, folk songs, jazz rhythms and geography of America as well as the landscape itselfwhich he hiked, climbed and also painted. All of these elements found their way into his music.
Those who influenced Bacon included Carl Sandburg, Thornton Wilder and Roland Hayes. Bacon's music expresses the common touch and humor of Sandburg; the profound simplicity of Wilder; and the melodic beauty that Roland Hayes expressed so movingly in his singing. As with Schubert, a large body of more than 250 art songs is the heart of an oeuvre that also includes numerous chamber, orchestral and choral works, as well as descriptive pieces for piano.
In 1998 numerous vocal-chamber concerts of Bacon's music were held in honor of his centennial. These events took place at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City; the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress; the Free Library of Philadelphia; Syracuse, New York; Evanston and Chicago, Illinois; also in Berkeley and Waln

RE: another review.......2006-02-28
"There is another recording with the same contents, that should be checked out for pedagogical porpouses. The album (sony records) was performed by the members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Gleen Gould piano."
Just to clarify for those who may be interested:
The recording in question that "should be checked out for pedagogical PURPOSES" is performed by members of the PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA with GLENN Gould as the pianist.
Hindemith. WOW.......2005-10-20
So this copy of the brass sonatas is really good. One major thing that is excellent about this recording is that for the Alto Horn sonata they actually include the poem writen by Hindemitn to start off the fourth movement. I give this recording 5 stars because the performances are of the highest quality and I have played Hindemith before and this is a great way to hear how these pieces should be played.
One of the best Recording of the genre ever done before.......1999-11-08
This is an historic recording where the highest level of brass playing can be heard. Indeed, it is a reference for those professional and students who want an insight of style and performance practicing of how Hindemith's works should be Played. The balance between soloists and accompainment is perfect. There is another recording with the same contents, that should be checked out for pedagogical porpouses. The album (sony records) was performed by the members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Gleen Gould piano.
