5 out of 5 stars A great album by a great band........2007-01-09

If you own other Floater albums and are considering another, buy it. If you don't own any Floater, but are planning to buy your first, well, buy it... If you've never even heard these guys, but like "intelligent" metal, buy it. Deep lyrics and complex instrumentals, draw comparisons to Pink Floyd in a band that sounds nothing like Floyd.

This album doesn't have their "big hit" Danny Boy, so if you're looking for that song, go buy Gliph - its a great album too. What this does have is 14 great songs. It grabs you by the throat with "Here Comes the Dog." The creepy chilling story of "The Queen of the Goats" is another of my personal favorites, and I challenge anyone to find a cooler version of "Waiting for the Sun" including the original.

Seriously, I've owned this album since it came out, and years later it still gets played REGULARLY, and I have a giant music collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Best and Brightest/ Darkest.......2004-06-05

This album carries beyond any Floater both before and after. This CD has lived and breathed the last couple years of my life, and each time I listen, I find a new understanding for Floater's amazing style and grace. The music itself is a little on the more intense side, but varied enough with tracks such as "Colorblind" which break up the more intense songs. This album is most interesting for it's awe inspiring subject matter, for which I am forever thankful when seemingly all bands have forgotten how to even sing about something, Floater writes masterfully about love and loves lost. This album has much to offer to all in this world who has ever been in love, and dealt with the loss therein. Unforgetable, always in my top 5!

3 out of 5 stars Sosobra........2004-04-24

There are some excellent tracks here, lots of experimental work, especially when discussing the guitar work of Dave Amador. He's truly one of the most inventive guitarists in heavy rock, worthy to mentioned with Tom Morello and Buckethead. "Here Comes The Dog", "Exiled", "Independence Day" and "King Rabbit" are the stand outs.

I don't, however, rank this album amongst Floater's finest work, as it has some missteps in such tracks as "Colorblind", "Equinox", and a rework of an old classic, "Alcoholic", which doesn't carry the dark atmosphere of the original demo version found on their Danny Boy EP. The cover of the Doors' "Waiting For The Sun" is also a bit flat after a few listens, and probably should have been captured and released in its live form.

5 out of 5 stars Floater burns their demons!.......2002-11-15

The thing I like best about Burning Sosobra is the quality of the songs, and the final mastering of the cd.

This is Floater's fourth album. Continuing along their progression from the previous _Angels in the Flesh and Devils in the Bone_ , Floater masters the art of song composition. When compared to Angels in the Flesh... this album has a stronger, more heavier sound, yet doesn't come off like their earlier albums Glyph or Sink. The album has a slight raw feeling, that grasps the energy of the songs in their entirety. But don't let that rawness fool you, this album has real good production values.

1. Here Comes the Dog - The opening track starts the album off with a bleak story. It makes you feel sad, but jumpstarts into Floater's signature chunky rock.

2. Watched Over By Crows - This meandering track winds it's way through serenity and oblivion. "We don't speak, we don't hear... nothing at all...."

3. I Know - Probably the lightest rock song on the album. It's sort of upbeat. I nice little number.

4. Queen of the Goats - In my opinion the first real POWERFUL song on the album. It's long episodic vision charges forward and searches the far reaches of your soul, and even beyond.

5. Exiled - A CLASSIC! Very original with a middle eastern flavor, as you hear Dave Amador's fingers grace and dance about the guitar frets, you are taken away to lands where the few have been exiled.

6. Independence Day - Another really great song. A sing along in fact. This song is mellow song with some really great lyrics such as "I'm stone jumping, looking at the ocean. I've got no direction, but I'm in motion."

7. King Rabbit - This is the albums bruiser song. It's fast and hard and pummels you. It bounces between being in limbo, to hectic-paced racing.

8. Milk of Heaven - A gentle number, personally a favorite of mine. First your wading through a field, the next your catapulted into the sky, looking into your dreams.

9. Albatross - Another overall really good Floater song.

10. The Marriage of the Black Sheep - This song is a story about a couple with their apparent differences getting in the way. Yet undoubtedly joined at the hip. It's an odd combination of hard and subtle sounds.

11. Colorblind - Acoustic classic. This song has some really catchy lyrics coupled with some nice acoustic strumming and solos.

12. Waiting for the Sun - A cover of The Doors classic song. But Floater style! Introducing Floater's up-and-down emotional ride into the song, this is also a fan favorite.

13. Alcoholic - Out comes the B-side from the Sink recording sessions... only this time it's a new recording! This is my least favorite track on the album. It's definitely dated.

14. Equinox - The final track is a warm little number. To the beat of some bongo drums, Floater finishes up the album in style... "Time is heard in the ticking of the clocks, as you and I make love to the equinox."

The producer for this album really pushed Floater as musicians. And you can tell. The guitar riffs on Queen of the Goats, Exiled, etc. are really perfected. The overall sound of the album is great! The bass is in harmony with the guitar, and the drums are at the right volume level. Burning Sosobra may not be as slick as an album like Glyph, but in terms of performance Floater has outdone themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Another turn for the NW's best band.......2002-09-13

Floater's 4th studio album "Burning Sosobra" is another decided turn by the Northwest's most talented band. Condensing their song structure from previous efforts, Floater still displays their uncanny ability to take 90 degree turns within their music all the while keeping a cohesive groove. Some of Floater's best songs were yielded during the "Sosobra" sessions. From the melancholy reggae beats of "Independence Day" to the rock solid heavy "King Rabbit," Floater display an array of unique songs packed with thought provoking lyrics and masterful musicianship.

Up until the May 2002 release of Floater's 5th album, "Alter," "Burning Sosobra" was Floater's best effort. An easy 5 star rating.
