If you're looking for that perfect slow hand CD to carry around in the car, Time Pieces is the disc for you. Featuring 11 of Clapton's most radio-friendly hits ("I Shot the Sheriff," "After Midnight," and "Layla," of course), this CD also offers up some of Clapton's most romantic moments in "Wonderful Tonight" and his most cynical in "Promises." Though there's nothing here that you don't have on another couple of discs, Time Pieces is a convenient package of great hits that make you want to roll down the windows, crank up the stereo, and roll. --L.A. Smith

3 out of 5 stars Obselete, but far from bad.......2007-03-11

While the joke about Clapton (like coffee) sucking without Cream isn't true, he certainly made his best work in the '60's. Which is why I'd point any Clapton newbie to The Cream of Clapton, rather than Timepieces, since it contains not only all of his solo hits (which are a mixed bag, I'll admit, but there are some good ones), but also offers up a few Cream, Blind Faith and Dominoes tracks. This mainly focuses on solo Clapton, other than Layla (with Derek & the Dominoes - NOT the only good song the band recorded!) This can be good - after all, you get After Midnight, I Shot the Sheriff, Let It Grow, Cocaine and Lay Down Sally. But on the other end of the scale, Wonderful Tonight, Promises, and his take on Knockin' on Heaven's Door - not bad, just mediocre. And I'm sorry, but Wonderful Tonight and Promises are hellspawn - along with I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart (sounds like he never frickin' PLAYED rock), they constitute my Axis of Clapton's Evil. The absence of Let It Rain SHOULD be an enormous red flag, since it's far and away the single best song of his solo career. Motherless Children is also missed, and as I said before, a few '60's tunes would've been appreciated.
This is completely worthless now that The Cream of Clapton exists, but if that's considered contraband where you live (but this one isn't - hey, stranger things have happened), Timepieces makes for a good alternative.

3 out of 5 stars Not Very Good.......2005-12-06

I was highly disappointed with this Clapton Compilation. The only songs I particularly like were "Layla", "Cocaine", and "I Shot The Sheriff".
I am sorry, people; "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is a terrible song. The best of Clapton? Generally the "best" of someone means their "best" songs! Also cut out "Willie and the Hand Jive", "Wonderful Tonight", and a few others.
If it weren't for the 3 songs I mentioned previously, this album would be trash.

2 out of 5 stars A Lacking Album.......2005-12-06

This album lacks a lot. I don't really want to go into detail, but trust me. Get the cream of clapton istead.

2 out of 5 stars TIME FECES.......2005-10-27

The BEST of Clapton?...PUH-LEEEEEEEEZE!!! This retch-rospective should be called "Time Feces". Where's "Let It Rain", one of his finest singles ever? What happened to "Bell Bottom Blues", "Tulsa Time" (I'm sure Don Williams put it on HIS greartest hits), "I Can't Stand It", "Blues Power", "Hello Old Friend", etc., etc., etc.??? Am I being picky here, or do any and all of these chestnuts not take precedence over pedestrian covers of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and (for cryin' out loud) "Swing Low Sweet Chariot"? To think that the compilers were choosing from one of Slowhand's best periods musically, long before he slid into soundtrack composing unconciousness. A far better compilation choice is the smartly titled "Cream of Clapton", which not only includes everything "Time Pieces" left off, but also everything decent it left on, including the original "Layla" and "After Midnight", his country classics "Lay Down Sally" and "Promises", and his "461 Ocean Boulevard" hit remakes "I Shot the Sheriff" and "Willie and the Hand Jive". It also throws in five Cream classics and one from Blind Faith. Now THAT'S the Cream of Clapton! This tastes more like curdled milk. RATING: TWO BAD

4 out of 5 stars Still good, even if there are better discs out there.......2005-09-15

I bought this disc used for a great price and it is more than worth it. It gives me a Clapton fix when I need it and delivers a great group of his songs/hits. If I want more, I know there are other albums with Clapton that will fill the void that this album leaves but I have no problem with this one. If you are a Clapton disciple, you might buy this one but you'll surely own much more, too. If you just need a jolt of Clapton, grab this one.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-03-22

I've owned the original Mono Vinyl and 2 earlier editions of the CD and the sound quality on disk 1 is incredible. Like hearing it for the first time. Disk 2 has a bunch of great rarities that would probably cost about $5,000 to get in their original vinyl though the sound quality is all over the place. I've always kept this in my 60's punk rock category rather than my blues. This is raw garage junk with the best English guitarist ever. My best purchase of the year so far.

5 out of 5 stars Clapton is God.......2007-02-13

This album sparked the saying "Clapton is God" all over the U.K. This Album is where Clapton plugged a Gibson Les Paul into a marshall amp and changed rock music forever. This is my all time favorite blues album. Clapton plays guitar with a lot of fire. This collection is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar Heaven By Eric Clapton!.......2007-01-09

Few albums have had greater impact than John Mayall's 1966 landmark "Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton." Released by the Decca label in Britain on 22 July 1966, literally days after Clapton left the Bluesbreakers and just a week before Cream's debut, it went all the way to #6, a pretty mean feat, since Mayall's band had never had a hit single. This may have been a first in Britain.

Of course, this is the album that set the blues and guitar worlds aflame and established Eric Clapton's name worldwide as the most passionate of musical interpreters. If you haven't yet heard "Beano" -- as it is affectionately known, because Clapton is pictured reading a "Beano" comic book on its cover -- then you ain't heard nuthin' yet! This is the stuff of legends.

From the album's first notes, you realize that you're in guitar heaven, as "Slowhand" shows us the way electric guitar can and should be played. Clapton's virtuoso playing is white hot throughout. Playing with a maturity beyond his 21 years, the young Eric Clapton so influenced the guitar world that Gibson eventually reissued the Les Paul model -- out-of-production since 1960 -- which Clapton then played.

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers served -- and serves still today -- as a finishing school for great musicians and sidemen (Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, John McVie, Jack Bruce, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Fleetwood and others). Mayall's proselytizing the blues (he's 73 years old!), his songwriting skills, and his other musical talents should not be ignored nor taken lightly.

1 out of 5 stars Great Album - Disappointing Reissue.......2007-01-08

Another attempt to issue the definitive edition of the legendary Bluesbreakers album that falls slightly short of the mark. The mono and stereo mixes on disc 1 are excellently done but simply replicate the single disc issue featuring the same material released a few years ago. This, therefore, sheds no new light on this fertile period of the second British blues boom. Disc 2 features some BBC sessions along with the familiar Immediate and Purdah 45's and half a dozen live tracks, in poor sound quality, that have been available before.

This is a big disappointment and is a missed opportunity which could have been avoided if the compilers had made any attempt to research the easily available archive information from this time. John Mayall himself was known to have kept meticulous records of sessions, gigs, personnel and recording dates and I'm sure would have been more than happy to contribute his knowledge in order to preserve his legacy in the best possible manner.

Anyone expecting to hear more of Clapton's stunning guitar work from this time is in for a big disappointment. Many of the songs from the BBC sessions presented here have nothing more than rhythm guitar low in the mix. This is the case with the first three songs on disc 2 and despite the session date given being after the point where Clapton joined the band, I suspect it was actually recorded earlier with Roger Dean on guitar. The three songs from the October 25th session are from the time when Clapton had taken a sabbatical and had been replaced by Geoff Krivit. The third BBC session featured on the disc includes only two songs out of at least five, and possibly six, which are known to have been recorded with Clapton in the band, one of those missing being a rare live version of the instrumental, Hideaway. This session has been bootlegged in excellent sound quality and so it's omission from this set is inexcusable.

All in all the "Deluxe" edition does nothing to enhance the importance and excitement of this classic album and the poor selection of additional material on disc 2 turns what should have been a worthy project into a complete waste of time and money. Five stars for the original album - 1 star for this reissue

5 out of 5 stars Beano plus....this package is a must for Eric Clapton fans........2006-12-01

This is a two-disc deluxe edition of the famous & influential "Beano" album. Disc one contains both the mono original release (1966) and the stereo version (1969) of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album.

For a review of disc one, I would refer you to many existing reviews of the original release of this important album. I can add little to all that's been said before, other than to say listen carefully to Have You Heard and Stepping Out. And Ramblin' On My Mind features a young Eric on vocals in the style he came to develop in his solo career.

Disc two (the reason I bought the deluxe edition) contains 19 extra tracks, and is the interesting part if, like me, you already own the original version of the Bluesbreakers album on CD. Extra tracks 1-13 are both live and in the studio. For instance, there are some BBC radio live in the studio broadcasts from 1965 & early 1966 and some recording studio session tracks, which predated the album. Sound quality is quite good on tracks 1-13 and a couple of those tracks highlight (even at that early stage) Eric Clapton's playing in the style he is known for.

But best of all, extra tracks 14 to 19 were recorded live at the Flamingo Club in London in March & April 1966. Those recordings are often primitive, raw, muddy & distorted, but you'll hear some of Clapton's most fiery and fluid playing on the blues guitar standards 14.They Call It Stormy Monday, 17.Have You Ever Loved A Woman and 19.Hoochie Coochie Man. Stormy Monday is the same track that's on John Mayall's Looking Back, and tracks 17 & 19 (above), amongst others, are the same tracks that were released on John Mayall's Primal Solos. There are nevertheless 9 unreleased tracks on disc 2.

This album is from the era when Eric Clapton played a Gibson Les Paul and developed his reputation as "God". It's a must-have album for Eric Clapton fans, and this deluxe edition, packaging the original album, 19 extra tracks and a 20 page booklet, gives you the best comprehension of how it all happened. As they say, the rest is history.

.....and whilst I have praised Clapton as the musical giant he was to become, credit should be given to John Mayall for being an astute & influential band-leader, mentor to a young Eric and a catalyst of the London blues scene.

3 out of 5 stars A fairly good package of seventies material.......2003-06-08

This album combines the best-of compilation "Timepieces" and the live "Timepieces vol II - Live In The Seventies" (not to be confused with the lavish box set "Crossroads II", which also bears the title "Live In The Seventies").

"Timepieces" was a pretty good overview of the first few years of Eric Clapton's solo career, and although hardly definitive, it does offer some of the highlights from "Eric Clapton", "461 Ocean Boulevard", "Slowhand" and Clapton's other seventies albums, and it even brings in the Derek & The Dominoes-single "Layla" (too bad that nothing else from that fabulous album is here).

"Timepieces vol. II" is a relatively short live album (eight tracks), bringing together songs as diverse as Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (nice rendition of that one), Charles Chaplin's "Smile" and Clapton's own "Blues Power".

The inclusion of very non-bluesy songs like "Smile" and Danny Flowers' country-rocker "Tulsa Time" probably means that not every Clapton fan will like this album, but I find it quite enjoyable, actually. The sound is very good, and the band is excellent, particularly keyboardist Chris Stainton who plays piano on the five recordings made at Tokyo's Budokan arena.

All in all, this is a nice overview of Eric Clapton in the seventies, blues, music hall and everything, but if you already have a good Clapton compilation ("The Cream Of Clapton" for example), you don't really need "Timepieces". But maybe you will want to check out "Timepieces vol II", which should still be available in its original format.

4 out of 5 stars Clapton's Love Letter Has Just Gotten Better!.......2007-05-26

This mini-lp replica sleeve version of the Clapton classic is a treat for fans; the mlps design is fairly well done and contains the lyrics in both English and Japanese. Ths sound quality is not that well remastered though which is a shame. This album is Clapton's love letter to George Harrison's wife to whom he was secretly in love with but what really makes it great is the guitar work on it done by both Clapton and Duane Allman. At the time the album was made, both men were the foremost exponents of blues guitar in the world. If anyone was better at it than Clapton, it had to be Duane Allman who tragically died soon after this album was made. Duane's slide guitar work is still amazing to behold today. Few people realise that it was Duane who played the lead on the famous track "Layla" with Eric playing rhythm guitar on the main riff.

Overall, this is essential listening for fans of blues guitar and especially for students of rock guitar.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars clapton is in love.......2004-04-21

layla and other assorted love songs is pure and simple a truely great love album. Eric Clapton had fallen so head over heals for George Harrison's wife that he had to express his feelings and the only way he could was to write beautiful songs like he did on this album. The title track "Layla" stands out as probably Eric Clapton's best song ever. The guitar is claptonesque and the lyrics are so deep and desperate. I personally have never heard a song of this type where its so hard at the beggining then completely changes into a great piano ballad. I would probably say that Layla is the greatest rock ballad of all time, and really was the pioneer of all of the eighties love ballads to come. This album is simplistic and arranged so beautiful. Clapton really did not plan any of this out, it seems almost like it just came to him one day and these are songs that he wrote in minutes perhaps. this album really does kick ass, its so good, and i put it right up there with any dylan or beatles album because it has that classic feel to it that you can't go wrong with....clapton is god on guitar, just thought i would add that

5 out of 5 stars Derek & The Dominos' Layla.......2003-09-09

This album is the classic of all classics. There is not a song on it that I don't love! A one-of-a-kind recording that can never be repeated. It sure will bring you back to the good old days of your youth (If you're about 50 years old!). Eric Clapton at his finest. A must-have no matter what age you are. Buy it now!!! You cannot go wrong.

Clapton really hit the mark with this one. This version of Layla really grasps what Clapton is all about and then it takes your immagination with it on his magic guitar solos all the way to the pianos final melodys. Youll be blown away!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Classic.......2002-07-16

While many reviewers and fans neglect the albums between "461 Ocean Boulevard" and "Slowhand," 1975's "There's One in Every Crowd" and 1976's "No Reason to Cry" easily equal the quality of the former masterpieces. No major radio singles, but plenty of mellow blues (and even a little gospel), funky riffs, moving ballads, and tasteful musicianship. These two albums definitely do not belong in the bargain bins!
