Painting with words from a masculine perspective.......2002-10-18
This album did not have to grow on me. It became a favorite of mine even as I listened to it the very first time. Kowanko's thoughtful insights and stories here are poetic and cleverly set to unique, solid melodies. Each song is a complicated layering of intelligent lyrics and music. Kowanko has done this layering correctly which makes these songs progress in a seemingly simple manner. Sophisticated ballads and pop to rock sounds give this album a broad range of appeal. Fans of Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Tom Petty will like this album.
A Personal favorite.......2001-10-02
What a great album this is. Chris Kowanko's voice reminds me of..oh, if Jules Shear joined the Violent Femmes...something like that. Great songwriting here - the songs sound like a really really good Lou Reed album sung by the description above. Worth buying....I just noticed that Chris has resurfaced - a look at kowanko.com says that a new CD called "Spell" has been released.
BARGAIN BIN MISTAKE.......2001-04-18
I found this CD years ago for pennies. And it's been a friend ever since, making me laugh and making me think all in one sitting. Chris' cover painting matches the emotional range of his writing, and the rasp of an untrained, yet perfectly natural singing voice. He makes it seem so easy that you'd think any regular joe could pull it off - and he has. Doing the unremarkable - running away from the sophomore release for whatever reason - just keeps me wanting more. It's nice to see that the CD is still available and that others might still stumble across Kowanko.
Kowanko among the least famous "Where are they now?" artists.......1999-04-02
"Kowanko" is one CD in my collection that leaves its case frequently. I only wish there were more from the same source. Depending on the listener's state of mind, Kowanko's lyrics and melodies can inspire, subdue, and romance--all in one album! If I had to categorize their tune-age, I would group them with Crash Test Dummies, PsychoDots, and Manning-isms. For me, Kowanko air-time is reserved for "special" occasions only. To witness their Warhol-istic commercial success, rent The Crush on video (starring Alicia Silverstone). Alicia's character listens to Kowanko while tanning in the yard...or was the music simply in my head? For an obscure and enjoyable addition to your music portfolio, Kowanko is an excellent selection.
A New York carpenter crafts a masterpiece!.......1999-02-04
What ever became of Chris Kowanko? He put out this one gem and then I guess he returned to his carpentry profession. This is as good as the singer/songwriter genre gets. It's our loss that he never (to my knowledge) released anything else. The radio station I work at still plays him, but I'm guessing we're in a minority of one. This is pop at its brilliant best.

A songwriter deserving of wider recognition........1998-12-12
This CD is a find. Chris Kowanko is one of my favorite songwriters. Every song on his full length CD is a gem; the EP will just whet your whistle. In addition to the great songs, some musical highlights include the atmospheric guitar parts by Brian Zipin and pipe-laying bass of Tony Shanahan (another fave of mine). Not to be missed are the stellar background vocals on "Will You Come To!"

Album Description
Long awaited second album from singer/songwriter Chris Kowanko. Honest, conversational pop songs of the deceptively everyday with the insight and inner fire of such British outsiders as Roy Harper and The Jazz Butcher. Joining Chris on the record are members of the Patti Smith Group. Recorded in Seattle by indie producer legend Steve Fisk. (Boss Hogg, Unwound, Pigeonhed)

I have just one problem with it..........2001-10-23
...it ends. But enough about endings,
"Sometimes" is such a sweet beginning to the album...in fact. it
seems a companion, a bookend, to "Askin' You To", with its homey
accordion and straightforward lyric. These songs remind me of Neil
Young's "Sleeps With Angels" album, where he used two very unironic
yet sentimental tunes to frame a series of much more potent and
questioning songs. And "Net." I love "Net" This song is
like snow in April, or a kiss thrown from a train...it seems to last
only a moment, and to hang in the air just long enough to lodge in
your ear, and haunt you the rest of the day. "Everything Must Go" is
another total standout; I love the way the guitars sound, especially
the electric guitar in the refrain. But I was completely unprepared
for Nobody's Fool." It's such an understatedly gorgeous song that I
just sat and didn't move while it played. To me, it feels like the emotional peak of the
album. Sorry if all this stream-of-consciousness prattle is hard on
your eyes...In short, I love it.

Customer Reviews:
kowanko is amazing.......2002-12-05
for those of you who dig the likes of bens everwhere -- kweller, harper, folds five -- this eclectic quirky honest compilation will be the perfect addition to your acoustic-inspired collection. kowanko is incredible and it's only a matter of time before his work is given the credit it deserves from the masses. taking after the likes of such acoustic favorites as nick drake (but maybe a little less melodramatic) or bob dylan (but taking himself a little less seriously), chris kowanko makes me think of summer picnics, afternoons in the park, first dates.... and good music.
