4 out of 5 stars Stellar acoustic return of former Jayhawks front man.......2001-10-03

After leaving the Jayhawks in 1995, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Mark
Olson retreated from Americana/alt.country stardom to form a
three-piece with his singer/songwriter wife, Victoria Williams
(billed, at her regular record company's behest, as Mabel
Allbright), and multi-instrumentalist, Mike "Razz"
Russell." This debut album was originally released in 1997 on
their own Creekdippers Records. Koch has reissued a straight-up
reproduction of the original ten tracks.

Divesting himself of the
more complex trappings of the Jayhawks (and the escalating demands of
their fans and record company), Olson has placed his thin,
songwriterly voice amid laconic, acoustic music. There's a sense of
weariness to Olson's singing, but there's also a sense of
discovery and freedom. Perhaps two sides of the in-a-band,
not-in-a-band-anymore coin. The overall feeling is similar to Dean
Wareham's work with Luna and Tom Verlain's with Television. But
where these groups invoked trance-inducing electrics, the Creek
Dippers strip their music to its bones - an acoustic guitar (or banjo
or mandolin or fiddle), a harmonica, a lightly played piano, a
drum. The spare arrangements and harmonies create a sincerity and
closeness that leaves the songs to speak as melancholy mood
pieces.

"Quiet is the new loud" - something the Creek
Dippers recognized a few years ahead of the curve. The effect is
subtle, and highly compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Two Hearts.......2000-12-23

This debut album from the former jayhawks singer/songwriter simply astounds in it's beauty, like hearing the sound of wind in fields of grass. When my beloved grandmother died this was the first album i put on to comfort me. A Folk Masterpiece that i'll be listening forever.

5 out of 5 stars Slow Growing.......2007-01-14

I would not listen to the 1 star review. If you don't like choppy music you don't like Mark Olson. His music is not catchy and does not immediately grab you. But if you give it time it has this effect that is unexplainable. I am not sure he is the better half of the Jayhawks, but I do know the Jayhawks were a more interesting band with Mark. This is an excellent record, but do not believe your going to be singing along after 1 spin. With early alternative country (Gram Parsons, The Byrds, etc) that was possible. This indulges patience and rewards those who are willing to dig beneath the catchiness of music.

4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the 1 star review!!!.......2004-06-14

I love alt.country. I love the Byrds, Gram Parsons, UT, Wilco, Jayhawks, Gillian Welch etc. As a result, I sought out some Mark Olson stuff, since he had been, in my opinion, the better half of the Jayhawks. In my search I ran across this album. The descriptions noted that Pacific Coast Rambler was a jangly affair, recorded in a home studio, and was mostly acoustic. I just had a feeling about it, so I picked it up. All I can say is that the disk is amazing. From the cover art, to the pictures, to the last song the album has a very warm feel with sparse production, textured arrangements, beautiful vocals, strumming acoustics, and good lyrics. The biggest surprise was that Mark really has a Gram Parson's thing going on when he sings with his wife, Victoria Williams, who is all over this album.
Friends, if you dig the acoustic, slightly twangy side of alt.country, pick this cd up and disregard the 1 star review below. This CD is a hidden masterpiece from the Joshua Tree forest, where the Dippers live and record. Highly recommended for Gillian Welch fans.
Peace

I've got a pretty good collection of laid-back, Gram Parson's influenced indie-country rock and no-depression type stuff and love most of it. I even like the Jayhawks. I haven't bought a cd I was sorry to buy in years, and I buy a couple of cds every week. Until I got this cd, I had a pretty stellar and luck-filled record. This is the first cd I've bought in a while that I've considered selling back or even throwing out. I find I am constantly whincing when I listen to this-- it's that embarassing. The lyrics are absolutely terrible and the sentiment is worse than what you'd find in a Hallmark card. I've given it many listens and tried to like it, but the doggerel verse and out-of-tune, cringe-worthy music makes that impossible. Without a doubt this is the worse cd I've bought in at least 2 years. What's odd is that I've only seen good reviews for it, which is partially why I bought it. I'm writing this so at least there is another view displayed. If at all possible, see if you can find a sample of the lyrics and music before you buy.
