5 out of 5 stars Pärt fans take note.......2005-08-12

Beyond the musical composition there is an intangible, almost mystical quality to many of Pärt's albums, especially my personal favorite - Tabula Rasa. Maya's version of Fratres is what initially attracted me to this album. However, this cut is actually now one of my least favorites. Track #1 alone would make this album worth the price. Maya's playing captures something that is beyond words and beyond any attempts to evaluate it based solely on its musicality. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Profound and intense.......2005-03-23

It is impossible to describe this music, but suffice it to say that this CD contains some of the most compelling and interesting new music I've ever heard. The compositions have great emotional/spiritual depth and intensity, and Beiser's playing is strong and authoritative.

5 out of 5 stars A contemporary tour de force.......2003-11-04

Maya Beiser's new recording is a sensational exploration into the world of multi-track recording. "Mariel" is a spiritual work, centered around what sounds like a South American folk song. "World to Come," by far the largest work on this disc, with vocals and multiple tracks of cellos, is inspirational and hopeful. A really enjoyable disc.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

1 out of 5 stars Ten and Amen killed AP name .......2006-11-13

Astral Projection - djs who have pulled off the tunes no one in the world could repeat. Mind blowing album - 1999 Another World, then next to it - Dancing Galaxy. The sound so heavenly and so correct, it is amazing. However this cannot be said about anything that came out after the year 2000, hence "Ten" and "Amen". AP has decided to partner with incapable djs Fleming and other commercial barf-masters who could never even come close to the state of art goa trance AP was releasing prior to 2000. So my honest opinion , and the opinion of many goa djs with inclined taste in Goa is, 97 and 99 is perhaps the last we have seen of AP that is truly awesome and very much worth listening to. I still hope they recover from this rapid and harsh fall, but by looking at their track record in the new millennium things aren't in their favor.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite psy-trance albums.......2006-09-13

Astral Projection were the psy-trance act that really got me into the genre. While I've raved about Hallucinogen and Infected Mushroom, I have to say that Amen is truly up there with the best of them. If you already listen to psy, you may listen to this and wonder why it is that I love this album so much. After all, it doesn't contain any exceptional techniques or programming, nor does it sound particularly unique. All I can say is that there is something about the overall feeling of this album that I find captivating.

I find this album really comes alive when driving along at night. For some reason, its sound brings images of red and yellow lights to mind, the music weaving in and out with all these separate synth lines leding together yet playing off each other. The combination of this with the yellow, red and whilte lights from cars and lampposts and being alone on the road is one of my favourite musical feelings. Compared to some other Astral Projection work (such as Astral Files for example) this is one of thier more psychedelic works, the music sounding thicker and denser with more emphasis on feel than on catchiness. While I don't mind catchy psy-trance, it sometimes feels like it's defeating the point of the music. Here however, the psychidelic nature of the music really comes alive.

All I can say is that you can't buy this album expecting something mindblowingly exceptional or original and I can definitely see some people hearing this and trying to figure out why it is that I find it so good. Mark Sheeman is by no means wrong when he says it's not very original, but I suppose everyone has at least one (if not a good few) albums that really affect them personally without being universally loved. But with that said, if you're a fan of proper psy-trance, I can't see what there isn't to like on this disc and it gets a solid five from me.

4 out of 5 stars Mark got it right.......2005-10-19

This is no "Dancing Galaxy" or "Another World" but it is nonetheless a pretty awesome piece of music. :) It seems pretty tame compared to the old school AP as it seems more mellow. I never thought there would be an AP album I wouldn't give 5 stars but it just lacks that magic the others had. Don't be afraid to buy this, however, as you will like it.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but uninspired psychedelic trance.......2005-04-10

The opening of this album sounds promising, but it turns out to be fairly uninspired psychedelic trance in the style of early Juno Reactor or X-Dream all the way through. As I generally love that style of techno, I like the album, but find all tracks rather anonymous. Usually, with an album, at least one or two tracks stand out to a degree that I at least stop and think "Hey, that's kind of cool". Unfortunately, not so with this album.

Based on the above, it sounds like this is really a terrible album, but its not so bad. Although I find it a bit bland, it's still nice overall. It's smooth and cool, and one reason why no track stands out may also be because it's so consistent. As a background track for whatever I'm doing, it works well.

It's just not very original.

1 out of 5 stars Astral Scene~ The Astral Projection.......2004-10-07

Do not buy this album believing it to be by the Israeli dance/trance duo, Astral Projection. It has nothing to do with them. It is by THE Astral Projection and I have reported it to Amazon as their search criteria is very misleading.

1 out of 5 stars THE Astral Projection, not Astral Projection.......2000-12-31

As the original release date for this item would probably suggest, don't confuse this CD for the contemporary trance/dance music of Astral Projection. Instead, this is "The" Astral Projection, and the music is completely different: it's the kind of simple and mellow music you'd expect to be playing in the past, back when lava lamps were new, not "retro." If you're feeling nostalgic for 8-track tapes, try it: you might enjoy this CD. But if you landed here looking for club music, this isn't it.

5 out of 5 stars In Another World.......2007-02-17

As a long time listener of electronica and dance music, it takes takes a lot to impress me. Astral projection did just that with Dancing Galaxy and their other masterpeice Dancing. Truly the cream of the crop of trance music. Sure, it has repetitive beats, but that is just the track that this train is on as it transports you away. If you are a fan of goa or psy trance, then this needs to be in your collection. The samples, esp. the ones from the movie DUNE, really add to the otherworldlyness of this experience.

Like another reviewer said, I've been looking for a long time for that perfect mix of energy, ambience and trancy sound. I found that here. This album sets the bar.

TIP: I found this for much less on e bay - I suggest checking there before paying outrageous seller fees.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2006-04-15

I'd never heard of Astral Projection and was always looking for that RIGHT Ambient Electronic Trance sound. I finally found it after downloading a copy of Distant Galaxy and that blew me away!!!! It captured the whole meaning of trance and how the music allows you to float into whatever realm your mind can conjure. Have these guys ever made a video or DVD of how they interpret their moods and music visually?? Now that would be a priority purchase

    5 out of 5 stars Massive.......2005-10-19

All the reviewers seem too agree. This is one of the best albums ever made. This and AP's other great one "Dancing Galaxy" have some of the most thourough soundscapes. Perfected by not over or under doing it, these tracks are quality and will endure many other trance projects that simply can't compete. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Rarely Do I rate things perfect.......2004-09-19

But this comes very very friggen close. This CD is just astonishing. From track to track (as I listen even right now) I find myself in a deep mood of appreciation for the genre. Searching for UFO's almost made me go outside with a telescope. The songs just leave you with a undescribeable feeling. No words can describe my specific desires to music, but if you like Juno Reactor, Bypass Unit, and even some "Pop Techno" such as older Crystal Method or Paul Oakenfold, you may just find yourself in a musical bliss as I did. Music grows on you...almost ever CD is not what you expected, which is commonly linked to let down. All I say is try everything with as open mind as possible...you may just be suprised on how much things can grow on you. I do not believe this CD is perfect, as perfect gets handed out on this ratings often, but I can say I have no gripes with this cd myself.

5 out of 5 stars Best Goa Trance or Psy for that matter.......2004-05-22

If you are into trance or electronic music Astral Projection is a must have. I am biased because they are my favorite electronic band. However, as biased as I may sound, I have to give a realistic opinion. If you are into mainstream stuff and want to check out something different, but don't know where to start, this is definately what you need to listen to. If you are into psy or goa and still haven't listened to Astral Projection, then you should be ashamed of yourself;)

    5 out of 5 stars First-rate Feldman........2007-01-03

This CD collects most of the works composed by Feldman using the "graph" notation (boxes indicating general pitch range and number of pitches to be played in a given rhythmic unit). Four pieces (Atlantis, Ixion, The King Of Denmark, and one other work [unspecified in the liner notes]) are not included. Those included in this CD are key works, however. Some are orchestral works, performed by The Barton Workshop via overdubbing. All the works are poetic and the orchestral work "Out Of 'Last Pieces'" is performed here in a much more cohesive and fluent realization than the rather clumsy New York Philharmonic version issued in the 1960's. (This work, incidentally, is listed here as a "First Recording", but the NY Philharmonic version takes precedence.) Although the five "Projections" are also available in another recent Mode recording, every version of these pieces is bound to be very different, so having duplicate recordings is not a problem at all. In fact, it's a definite plus, in that one can compare the different versions and consider the similarities and differences. In any case, this recording is a must for any Feldman fan, and an important addition to any avant-garde chamber and orchestral (and piano; 2 of the works are for solo piano) collection.

5 out of 5 stars Can listen to it again and again and again and again...........2007-02-04

This is one of those trance mixes I can just listen to while I drive, and when it's over, start it up again. It is just simply, YUM.

5 out of 5 stars Psy Trance Done right.......2007-02-01

Sure, there are some beats and synths that are almost cliché this day and age, but things are mixed up enough and put together well enough to overlook that minor quibble. There are tons of standout tracks, esp. on disc 2, but my fave is the closer for disc 1, Axis V0.99.

Well worth the asking price and a collection that deserves to be in any trance music lover's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Pure, hard music for the soul!.......2005-11-18

Astral Projection makes awesome psy trance. They are one of the best, and this album is their to prove it. The beats and tones are clear and hard and the absolute definition of psychadelic trance. Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars This album is AMAZING.......2005-10-31

Wow, I honestly don't know what to say other then that this is one of those show stoppers that sucks the air from your lungs and leaves you on the floor breathless and begging for more. This is probably the BEST trance album I have ever heard in my life. The stuff these guys put out there is absoluetly incredible. Forget Oakenfold and Sasha, if you only get to listen to one electronica album in your life, make sure it's "In the Mix". I guaruntee you will not regret it.

      5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah!.......2005-08-03

Two CD's full of floor stompin' no nonsense pumpin' full on flowin' listener's appreciation showin' liking what I'm hearin' music's so hot it's searing classic in a minute definitely gonna spin it tracks. If trance can be broken down into an equation, Astral Projection knows what that equation is and knows it well. It may not shock you with originality, but what you want to hear is here, making it very satisfying. Besides, we all know something does not need to completely depart from the norm to make that something better than something else. Enough said.
