i'm sitting on top of the world.......2007-05-23
this box set is simply incredible.
not only are the main albums you would want by the duo included, but you're getting 6lps on 3cds!
it came in a lovely wooden box and i thought that makes it more sturdy than most box sets i own. as far as the music, well if you dont' know anything about the sound of les paul and mary ford, then i don't know what to tell you.
les paul is the creator of multi-track recording, reverb, uh and the electric guitar (hence his name is on killer guitars). that being said the music is a wonderful quirky country skidoodle with mary ford's sweet voice on top, not doing any vocal acrobatics, since les paul's guitar playing is so intricate, her vocals suit the arrangements perfectly.
if you have just a passing interest in les paul's early(and superior) work, this would be worth the money. amg(allmusic.com)has listed other albums that sound very much worth getting, but this would be the best place to start (and possibly stop) with his early material.

Little Richard on "I Feel Pretty" alone is worth the price........2007-06-08
Bought the CD through Amazon after hearing the Little Richard cut, "I Feel Pretty". Playing to type, LR gives one of his all time best performances. This cut alone is worth the price of CD.
The rest of the CD - fair (Tevin Campbell - poor song choice for his otherwise cooool voice) to good (Selena - expected better) to outstanding (Aretha)
Outstanding!.......2006-12-17
Hearing Little Richard sing "I feel Pretty" is worth the price alone!
I found this to be a really neat way to introduce younger generations to this classic Broadway show.
I would love to see more R&B versions of Broadway hits.
A contemporary , edgy version worth buying!.......2005-09-19
This is a welcome, edgy adaptation of the classic songs of West Side Story. While the original version brought the concept of inner-city gangs to the consciousness of middle America, it was necessarily sterilized to make the message more palatable.
THESE versions of the familiar songs help us imagine the reality... the tension, the passion, the despair, and the love.
Fresh sounds for a new audience, this will be enjoyed by long-time West Side champions, as well.
Self-indulgent crap.......2004-05-07
There are a few high points to this disc which I suppose make it worth owning, but on the whole I find it extemely off-putting. "Somewhere" will bring tears to your eyes, but, alas, the producer seemingly didn't have the balls to tell AF to wrap it up--and so it becomes tedious, the opposite of tasteful self-restraint. And Patti LaBelle? Well, she is the patron saint of masturbatory yammering. On the other hand, Brian Setzer cuts loose on "Jet Song" in a way that'd be certain to put a smile on the face of Mr. Bernstein. There are some nice interpretations, but all in all, it has an inorganic, overproduced, Yamaha DX7'y sound.
This is a real gem!.......2004-01-19
What a fabulous collection of re-interpretations of these classic songs!
I take my hat off to David Pack for doing such a fantastic job on the arrangements. I just can't praise this CD enough! I wish the label had done more to promote this recording! All the artists did an amazing job on their vocals and instrumentation.
My favorites are : Selena, Michael McDonald/ James Ingram, Kenny Loggins/Wynonna, Patti Austin, Aretha Franklin,Tevin Campbell and Trisha Yearwood.
This is a great CD for any collection. It's a terrific way to expose your children to real music!

An amazing collection .......2004-12-14
I have held off buying compilations of 50's and 60's instrumental rock music, never satisfied with the CDs out there, and not sure I could sit through so many purely instrumental recordings. Well, this CD put that concern to rest. If you have always thought the old rock instrumentals were lame, watered down, 3 cord pap from bands who could not sing, think again. This grouping of some of the best instrumentals from that era should change your mind. Yes, most of these cuts are available on many CDs (I must have Lonnie Mack's Memphis on at least 3 others) but this mix does not have one truly weak link. I listened to it the first time on a long road trip last week, and must have looked weird shouting and slapping my hands on the steering wheel. The wailing sax in Tall Cool One and Bust Out - and the strollin' line dance image from Doggett's full version Honky Tonk, and on and on. Here's hoping Varese follows up with another like this.
A message from the compilation producer.......2003-09-17
The Rock 'n' Roll instrumental has been popular from the earliest day of rock. Not only did the format emphasize different instruments such as guitar, drums, bongos, organ, piano and saxophone, but also different musical styles, such the raw guitar-sax sound of The Champs "Tequila," the drum laden sound of Sandy Nelson's "Teen Beat," the bongos of Preston Epps, "Bongo Rock," Duane Eddy's trademark twangy guitar on "Rebel Rouser," and the organ drivin sound of Bill Doggett "Honky Tonk" among others. This collection features 25 of the finest hits the genre has to offer. No slow dances here, only the best rockin' instrumentals. Three songs are making their American CD debut. All tracks on this release are the original hit single versions, and are mastered from the best sources available.

A Hot Night In The Juke Joint.......2006-10-13
I have been a mild fan a Billy Burnette from the beginning. But this is easily the best album he has released. If you want a hot night of rock-a-billy in a juke joint without any crowd noise or overdubs of superfluous background singers, then this is the album for you. It just seems to end up in the CD player everytime I fire up the stereo. No frills, just really fine playing and infectious songs, and it gets under your skin from the beginning to the very last cut. Easily the best buy I've made in the past year.
Listen to this music carefully...........2006-09-01
This cd is a gem, and defies easy description as to style. The songs are fantastic...only exceeded by the spartan, yet amazingly warm and full, recording. The interplay between Burnette's Gibson through a Fender Vibrolux and Kenny Vaughn's G&L tele style guitar through a Vox AC15 is just amazing. The bass sounds warm and full. Listen through headphones....You'll love this disc.
From Memphis To Manhattan, No One Does Rockabilly Like Burnette!.......2006-04-12
Upon my initial listen, I was a little disappointed with MEMPHIS IN MANHATTAN, Billy Burnette's first new release in almost six years. Instead of a proper new studio album, he's chosen to basically record his live show in one take in St. Peter's Church in Chelsea, New York. The sound seemed a tad bit muddy, and Burnette's vocals were almost lost among the over-powering instrumentation. But then I followed the instructions on the back cover and cranked up the volume....and everything feel into place! Anchored by David Roe's pulsating stand-up bass, MEMPHIS IN MANHATTAN is a jumpin' collection of rockabilly classics, both old and new. Burnette is in fine voice throughout, singing from the core of his being....you can just tell these songs, as well as the genre itself, really mean something and matter to him! Opening up the disc is "Memphis Blues." With it's easy sway and goodtime vibe, it sets the mood perfectly for what's still to come (Special mention has to be made of Kenny Vaughn's brilliant lead guitar riffs and George Ricelli's percussive stick work!). Next up is "My Love Will Not Change", another Burnette original. Intense and driving, there's an edgy, almost swampy, quality to the track that just draws you in. Once again, the perfect blend of thwacking drumsticks, thick, meaty bass chords and shimmering guitars blend together in a musical orgy of abandon and high spiritedness....these guys are having a blast, and it shows! Without a doubt, my favorite cut is a cover of Bob Dylan's "Everything Is Broken"....there's just something slinky and sweaty about the track that screams "Classic Rock 'n' Roll!" After addressing a litany of things gone wrong...or "broken"....Burnette practically spits out the choruses of "Ain't no use jivin'/Ain't no use jokin'", "Broken words/Never meant to be spoken", "Take a deep breath/It feels like you're chokin'....everything is broken." with glorious effect. Once again, Vaughn and Burnette's guitar playing is impeccable! After years of performing the song with Fleetwood Mac, it's only natural that Burnette might record "Oh Well" on his own. Putting your own spin on such a signature song can be risky, but Billy Beau totally pulls it off. Stripping the song down to it's bare essence, Burnette foregoes the percussive flourishes that Mick Fleetwood has made the centerpiece of the song for years and instead lets Roe's bass take center stage. Toss in the ferocious jam quality that only two guitars, bass and drums can come up with and you end up with a blistering rocker that both salutes it's blues background and tips it's hat to the early rockers of yesteryear. A brilliant cover of a classic track! Up next is the boppin' beat of "Big Hunk Of Love." With it's frantic riffs and shotgun backbeat, this is Saturday night dance hall music at it's best! I mean, if this track doesn't get you movin', well, it's time for you to leave the party! (Mark my word, Bonnie Raitt could do a KILLER version of this rave-up!) "Faded Love" is the only cut that I still haven't been able to get into. A bluesy ballad, it just kind of plods along. The track features some nice guitar work from Vaughn, but overall it just kind of brings the disc to a screeching halt. Things pick up again with "Can't Wait To Get Back Home", a rockabilly/country hybrid toetapper. This cut's another prime example of where all four of the instruments have come together in perfect harmony, melding in a way that seems easy, clean and second nature. VERY cool! What would a rockabilly collection be without a classic gem like "It's Late?" Though he's been singing his dad's song for years, the younger Burnette still infuses the cut with a sense of innocence, wonder, joy and, yes, even a little naughtiness. There's no real depth to "It's Late" - in fact, it actually comes across in many ways as a simple little jam number - but it's still as infectious as ever, guaranteeing it's place in rock history. Billy's take on it only helps to reinforce that fact. With it's buzzsaw energy and rapid fire delivery, "Tryin' To Get Away" is as much a reflection of Burnette's years playing in LA clubs during the burgeoning New Wave scene of the early 80's as it is his rockabilly roots. The track barrels along, with Burnette's powerful lead vocal at it's core. Another winner! An overview of Burnette's career wouldn't be complete without "Tear It Up" on it, a song he's both recorded and often done live in the past. However, while good, this version just goes on too long, getting a little monotonous by song's end. Far better is the disc's closer, a slightly rocking version of the Everly Brother's "Bye Bye Love." All in all, MEMPHIS IN MANHATTAN is a good overview of Billy Burnette's rockabilly roots, and should hold fans over until his next (and, hopefully, soon!) studio album (As with all my reviews, I have to dock the disc half a star for not including the lyrics).
A Strong Live Album!.......2006-03-21
While this is a live album, it also has the feel of a studio disc....everything was done in one take, with only minimal overdubs.
The stand-up bass anchors everything nicely, while Burnette's vocals still have that distinct punch to them!
All in all, a good album to hold you over until Burnette's next studio album!

Maryland's Danny Gatton was best known as a rockabilly cat, the man who put blistering guitar licks behind the likes of Robert Gordon, Billy Hancock and Delbert McClinton. Like his heroes Les Paul, Lenny Breau and Hank Garland, however, Gatton is both a country picker and a solid jazz man; he stole the show on a Blue Note jam session with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove on New York Stories in '92. Gatton kept both careers going at once; Cruisin' Deuces (1993) was a rockabilly outing, while his duet album with Philadelphia organist Joey DeFrancesco, "Relentless," is a straightahead jazz project. One pursuit reinforces the other; Gatton's jazz playing brings a harmonic sophistication to his rockabilly work, and his country experience gives his jazz solos a dramatic flair. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Psychobilly Rocker Meets Jazz Organ Monster.......2007-02-23
It's on the second cut, "Broadway," that Danny Gatton realizes what he's gotten into on this date. When you're Danny Gatton, you're used to blowing everybody else away. But Joey DeFrancesco wasn't being blown away by anybody, at least not that day. He takes a supercharged solo, and when Gatton gets it back, you can hear him quoting "I'm Beginning To See The Light." Oh, yeah. No cruising on this date. And, happily enough, the two of them proceed to blast through a program of jazzy blues.
It is clear from listening to this that while Gatton had amazing chops, he really wasn't a jazz player. That didn't stop him from having a whale of a time with Joey D, however. You could make an argument that this is one of the best examples of Gatton's playing, if only because DeFrancesco was such a worthy running-mate. Listen to them laughing on "Blues On The Half Shell"--they're having a great time. And if the idea of rockabilly rubbing up against jazz sounds appealing, you'll have a great time, too.
Realizations.......2006-11-02
Steve Grey hit the nail on the head. Gatton was putting forth a great effort... but his unschooled approach to music is rather glaring in contrast to DeFrancesco's musical prowess. But, It sounds like they were having a great time.
DeFrancesco is so articulate... heads and shoulders above the crowd. Gatton was an icon, to a degree, but when set side by side with a great all around groove doctor... the Gatton image doesn't shine as brightly, but exudes raw energy at a very high level. I personnally think it is raw energy... but a bit unpolished.
Now... I've seen Gatton many times. I'm from DC and a musician to boot. And I love Danny's style and miss him... and understand that when he came back from California after a brief period of session work... he too, recognized his technical limits.... that said; Gatton displays a straight up, off the cuff feel for the groove... Gatton was good, very good, but there were A LOT of musicians who also were and are more polished. This release demonstrates that Danny Gatton had limits. A quick listen to a lot of Gatton material will also reveal a repetitivness that cursory examinations might miss. I'm not faulting him... but laid open with DeFrancesco... those types of limitations are evident.
For a Joey DeFrancesco release... it's great. Joey is the B3 King and proves it! With Danny it still rocks and grooves and works. I still own it and enjoy the release very much.
Just pure energy, style and licks to spare!.......2006-07-05
This is the second version of this CD I have owned I like it that much that I gave one away reluctantly to a pal in England. From the moment this album starts you know you are in for a ride, and what a ride it is. From the beauty of 'The Chess Players' to the sheer intensity of 'Gearheads' , this album just overwhelms the listener with an ever-changing palette of different sounds. Is it country? Is it Jazz, Is it Rockabilly?. This is the kind of music you can't put into a category....simple as that.
One reviewer likes Hank Garland...sure, but that is comparing apples to oranges..for a start, there is NO-ONE like Joey DeFrancesco around...and the sound that these two guys produce is totally unique....it's a pity Danny is no longer with us, another one of these collaborations would have surely been a milestone, if this isn't already.
Unbelievable.......2006-01-12
This is a fantastic set of music. You have to listen to it to believe it.
Holy Chops Batman!!!.......2005-01-20
I was a sound tech for a number of years. I used to have this CD in my intermission rotation. No matter what genre of music the audience came to see, they were all blown away by the smokin' chops displayed by both musicians on this disc.

This is not what one thinks of as Rockabilly, but if one keeps an open mind it is a very rewarding CD. It's more of a blend of Rockabilly and Weestern Swing with a bit of an edge. I love to play it loud when I'm making chilli.
A burnin' hunk of western swing!.......2002-02-10
From the moment "Hadicillin Boogie" starts coming out of your speakers, you're going to fall in love with this record.
And if you're the observant type, you may even remember that this track currently appears in a commercial for the Honda Accord. A couple are driving along a lonely Texas freeway in their Accord, "Hadicillin Boogie" is playing on the stereo, and they have a good natured nonverbal dispute over how loud to play this song (inadvertantly demonstrating the convenience of auxiliary volume controls mounted on the steering wheel).
Hopefully, the exposure will get Ray Condo and his band some more recognition. This is an excellent record--35 minutes of swing, jazz, and rockabilly. The only problem I have with this record is that "Hadicillin" rocks SO hard that it almost overshadows the rest of the album. A great cut overshadowing a bunch of good cuts--now that's the kind of problem I wish more records had.
Grab your Babe and Hold On!.......2000-07-06
Don't put this CD on in the late evening or you'll be up all night.... Dancing! I mean these cats know how to jump, jive and wail. The pedal steel guitar will twang your heart, the sax will burn your soul. Ray has a voice that is slatherin' with dirty, low-down jitterbug. If you can remain seated during the first cut "Hadicillin Boogie" you better call 911... you're dead!
fantastic.......1999-10-13
I've been listening to ray since 1989 when he was with his hardrock goners and I'm happy to say he hasn't changed
Nothing but a blood-moving, swinging good time.......1999-01-02
You can enjoy Ray Condo and His Ricochets for so many good reasons. Maybe you have a need for an injection of kick-ass, swinging, clean-your-whole- house energy. Maybe you love swing or rockabilly or country music or all three at the same time. Maybe you'd like to hear some astounding musicianship for a change, or a wonderfully whining pedal steel. Maybe you're fan of cool old and new songs, sung in a voice drenched in an uptempo life on the road with a band. This is a combo that many more people need to hear about, and soon. They have the arrangements, chops, and just plain fun that Squirrel Nut Zippers wishes they had, without the Zips self-consciously arty cleverness. This guy, leading this band, is the real deal. Do yourself a favor: buy this CD, see the band live, and tell everybody you know.

Forget that bit about imitation being the most sincere form of flattery: in music at least, an artist truly pays tribute to another by fully appropriating his work and making it his own. Such is the case on Coat of Paint: Songs of Tom Waits, easily one of the best releases in the frequently tiresome genre of tribute albums. Indeed, the late Screamin' Jay Hawkins's delirious take on Waits's voodoo classic "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard" is so dead-on that it's almost inconceivable that he didn't write it. The same could be said for soul-man Andre Williams's sleazy version of "Pasties and a G-String," Flat Duo Jets' Dexter Romweber's manic "Romeo Is Bleeding," and Knoxville Girls' supremely tacky "Virginia Avenue." Lydia Lunch has been rewriting and singing "Heartattack and Vine" for at least 20 years, whether she wrote the original or not. Perhaps the single most impressive act of reappropriation comes from one-man band Christopher Watkins, a.k.a. Preacher Boy, with a mournful, near-orchestral version of "Old Boyfriends." And a trio of torchy ballads from Congo Norvell's Sally Norvell, Geraldine Fibbers' Carla Bozulich, and Eleni Mandell further illustrate the breath of Waits's huge body of work. New Coat of Paint is given an inner cohesion by the incestuous, intermarried connections of several of the acts, all veterans (appropriately) of Los Angeles's outlaw underground music scene. Perhaps the greatest compliment is that most of these tracks don't beg comparisons to the originals at all, but simply stand alone as classic compositions from the songbook of an iconoclastic American master of gutter poetry. --Carl Hanni

Why?.......2006-12-08
Some artists really aren't meant to be covered because their reach is far beyond any quality interpretations/renditions. These artists are the deities of American music. I've bought tribute albums to Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits, and they all just really suck. Sometimes it's more the singer than the song which is why no formula ever works when rendering such artists as the aforementioned.
Paling by Comparison.......2004-03-31
Only Tom can sing his songs, period. Keep moving -- nothing to listen to here.
A SAD TWCD.......2002-05-21
I like Tom Waits most of the time. It was hard for me to listen to all of this album. This is one I will probably give away or resell if I need some cash. I hope I can find a buyer for it soon.
So it's not Tom..........2001-12-21
Nobody can be Tom but Tom. (Just listen to John Hammond's attempts to sound dangerous, and you'll know what I mean.) That said, these are some damn creative interpretations of Tom's work. Not just creative, because it can be creative and still [bad]. This stuff is creative and sounds good.
In my collection, I have four different covers of Heartattack and Vine, and Lydia Lunch's is still my favorite. Muriel is great done in prayerful whispers, and the guy that sings Broken Bicycles lays down a dirge for a vocal track. Screamin' Jay opens the throttle up wide on Whistlin', and the call-and-answer format of Virginia Avenue is really neat.
I like music that doesn't sound like everything else. That's why I like Tom. If that's why you listen, you owe it to yourself to pick up both this and "Step Right Up," which, in its own way, is even weirder and more wonderful than this one.
Not really worth it..........2001-03-20
Ok, I picked this album up while buying another bad tribute album (Badlands: Tribute to Springsteen's Nebraska). I don't know why I buy these but when I run out of the artist's own material I'll buy anything close. First, like Dylan, Tom Waits has a unique voice which makes it hard to others cover his songs. However, there are a couple of gems on this album that I enjoyed. The last 3 songs are all enjoyable. The Black's version of Poncho's Lament is pretty good and the microphone effects just add to the song. The last song, Floyd Dixon's cover of Blue Skies is amusing and longer than the version I've heard Tom sing. The best song on this album is Neko Case's version of X-Mas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis. The organ in the background is perfect for the atomosphere and it's great to hear a bluesque woman sing this song from a woman's point of view, considering the song is a woman telling a guy about her life. It's just interesting to hear this song sung by a female and so well. It's the one song that I can listen to over and over on the album. Other than that, like someone else said, go buy all of Tom's stuff and enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
this cd MEANS christmas to me........2004-10-30
i grew up listening to this very album every year. i know every song and they are all close to my heart. great cd.
Wonderful Christmas Memories.......2003-12-02
My family owned this compilation on vinyl and played it every year over and over. As my children are growing up I wanted to play it for them but found the album to be in less than desirable condition. I was so excited when I found it in CD format that I bought one for my dad and sisters, too. You know it's a good compilation if it's still around after more than 20 years!
Wonderful CD!!.......2001-12-26
This CD was a great surprise to me. I spend Xmas alone & music makes my Christmas a happy one. The music is uplifting & brings back memories of an Old Fashioned Xmas...
Highly Recommend This One! Merry Christmas Everyone!
