HBO's pioneering series takes the dark carnival gambit of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, drops it in the bleak heartland of Dust Bowl-era America and jolts it with a compelling undercurrent of Biblical apocalypse. That's no easy dramatic flux to musically evoke, but veteran TV composer Jeff Beal graces the show with cues that seamlessly fuse Appalachian folk traditions with a brooding, goth-inspired ambient gloom. The anxious solo fiddle of the show's theme is a repeating motif, one the composer uses to variously evoke melancholy ("Dora Mae's Funeral"), bittersweet romance ("Rita Sue and Jonesy") or supernatural wonders ("Ben Heals the Girl"). Beal's use of mournful solo horn (as on "Mark of the Beast") often heralds the show's undercurrent of Biblical doom, while his hesitant, haunting piano passages seem to hang in the air for eternity. The evocative cues here stand in stark contrast to the oft-quirky jazz cool of the composer's Emmy-winning work on Monk, ample tribute to Beal's masterful abilities to channel his musical instincts into even the most diverse dramatic material. --Jerry McCulley

This was a great show, and the music is awesome. Haunting and wistful, it's great in the background when working or taking a bubble bath.
best part isn't even by jeff beal.......2007-03-04
the tone for the shows music was created by wendy melvoin & lisa coleman...the theme they created is the best part of this cd. too bad more of the original music from the first season wasn't included in this compilation. also, just a correction to a previous post; the people who designed the main titles won the emmy, the jeff beal.

Wonderful Town is a wonderful show.......2004-10-25
This is a terrific show. It has a famous composer, great tunes and a good, upbeat story. Why it has so thoroughly faded from memory is a question that puzzles me greatly.
The orchestrations are attributed to another individual, but Bernstein must have taken some substantial role in their creation, for large parts of "Wonderful Town" resemble only one other musical, "West Side Story."
Rosalind Russell is the star here, and rightly so. She sings--or rather croaks--her material very well, indeed. Only in "Swing" is she overmatched by the musical requirements and even then she fights them to a draw.
Edith Adams is very good, too, as Eileen. I think of her as Edie Adams, a sixties icon, wife of comedian Ernie Kovacs, mayhem-minded member of the Nairobi Trio and super-sexy pitchwoman for White Owl Cigars. I had no idea that she had also starred on Broadway. It was a pleasant surprise to find her here.
The men in the lead parts sing in that typical Broadway growl: perfect diction and lousy tone. They are endearingly awful. And I mean that in the best possible sense.
Five stars, no doubt about it!
Light and lively musical comedy .......2004-08-07
The first cast album of WONDERFUL TOWN sounds even better than ever in Decca's latest remastering. The sound is still somewhat flat (as are all Decca albums from the 40s/50s) but the Decca engineers have worked wonders on the 50 year old tapes making them sound as good as possible. Rosalind Russell was a perfect choice to play the acerbic Ruth. She doesn't have much of a singing voice but the songs were tailored to her limited range and she makes the character come alive. Edith Adams sounds properly winsome as her sister Eileen. In the supporing roles, Jordan Bentley comes off best as Wreck, but George Gaynes makes for a ponderous, somehwat stuffy Bob Baker.
In terms of album production, Decca eliminated the Overture and some of the dance music, and re-arranged "Christopher Street" to eliminate the spoken vignettes. Otherwise the score is presented in a faithful aural re-creation. The booklet offers a detailed synopsis to guide you through the score.
The bonus tracks are six songs from ON THE TOWN originally recorded when that show was playing on Broadway. This is NOT the definitive recording of ON THE TOWN. For that you need the 1960 album avaialble on Sony. But, the excerpts heard here provide an enjoyable bonus.
a must-have recording for REAL Broadway fans.......2002-12-26
This marvellous new re-issue of WONDERFUL TOWN is a must-have for Broadway buffs. In fact, this is really two albums in one, as it also contains the rare 1945 studio recording of ON THE TOWN as a bonus!
The story is based on the play "My Sister Eileen", written by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov; as well as the stories written by Ruth McKenney. The play was later turned into a successful Columbia film starring Rosalind Russell (as Ruth Sherwood) and Janet Blair as Eileen. Several years later Columbia released a musical version (following the success of WONDERFUL TOWN) which starred Janet Leigh and Betty Garrett.
WONDERFUL TOWN originally starred Rosalind Russell (repeating her film role) as Ruth and Edith 'Edie' Adams as Eileen. The cast also included George Gaynes (GIGI, 'Punky Brewster') as the romantic male lead.
The score by Betty Comden and the late Adolph Green is gorgeous, and features the comical "100 Easy Ways", the lilting "A Little Bit in Love" and the showstopping "Conga!" and "Wrong-Note Rag".
No Broadway-recording collection is complete without the original cast of this landmark musical.
This re-issue from the superb Decca Broadway range also includes the rare 1945 set of ON THE TOWN, which featured original cast-members Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Nancy Walker singing their songs from the show, with Mary Martin singing "Lonely Town" and "Lucky to Be Me".
Highly-recommended.
Leonard Bart-stein? Listen for yourself...........2002-09-23
Leonard Bernstein never erred on the side of subtlety, and this original-cast album contains two of his most enjoyable essays in musical near-mayhem: "Christopher Street" and "The Wrong Note Rag." The former is vastly like the theme music to "The Simpsons," and the listener can decide for himself how much of a coincidence this is or isn't. "The Wrong Note Rag" uses the tritone of the scale and a varied meter to make life difficult for the singers and anyone trying to count along. Unlike so many send-ups of the 1920s, this song ingenioulsy captures the musical and lyrical feel of novelty numbers like 1924's "Fascinating Rhythm"--or, better yet, the slightly later "Crazy Rhythm." A parody of the 1920s that shows any sense of the 1920s is a rare item, indeed. "Wonderful Town" is an interesting, enjoyable, and valuable historical piece, and I can only imagine what later performers did with it. I don't want to know.
Quality over quantity.......2002-05-19
Yes, the original 1953 cast recording of "Wonderful Town" may not be the most complete cast recording of the hit musical BUT I would wholeheartedly reccommend this CD over any other version. Why? Because of its original cast members and its original orchestrations! Rosalind Russell is peerless as Ruth Sherwood (I consider her version of "One Hundred Easy Ways" one of the funniest songs in musical theatre history) and Edie Adams shines through radiantly. Listen to her sing "A Little Bit In Love" to understand what I'm talking about. Also, the original orchestrations gtive this CD more vibrance than any of the later incarnations INCLUDING the 1999 studio recording, which to me sounds too mechanical and the British orchestrator doesn't seem to get the rhythms right. The original cast recording is A MUST for the true theatre fan, abridged score or not

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

It's about time!.......2003-02-12
If you only buy one CD this year, this should be it! Everyone in my somewhat eclectic environment likes it. The "Dark Side of the Moon" of alt/country.
Get Her A Songwriter.......2002-11-06
What's the lesson to be drawn here? Maybe that Seattle-ites shouldn't try to do country, for this just doesn't impress me much. There's nothing really wrong; McWilson has a fine sometimes lilting, sometimes belter voice, Dave Alvin's production is crisp and clean, and the playing is all you'd expect from the likes of REM's Peter Buck and others. There is a particularly fine keyboard and accordion riff in Today is Yesterday's Tomorrow that recalls the Sir Douglas Quintet classic Mendocino. Still, nothing sets this apart from dozens of other country CDs. Weak writing is the main culprit; cliches abound (Today is Yesterday's Tomorrow, yes, so what?) and too many of the songs are general laments without either distinction or resolution -- corks bob on the ocean, what goes out comes back again, the weight of the world is heavy, wishing doesn't always make it so. Well...duh. The sad part is that nowhere on the CD are such sentiments written or delivered with the least trace of irony. This problem is especially odd because producer Alvin in his own writing is a master of the telling detail that drives a song home. To close on a positive note, three songs are keepers -- the title cut, Eloda and Cryin Out Loud.
Outstanding.......2002-05-03
I've been purchasing music for over 30 yrs now, and maybe in that time, about five artists have totally impressed me and made me want to run out and buy their music and tell all my friends about them. This is one of those artists. Her hauntingly beautiful voice reminds ME of Joan Baez (have heard her compared to many others). Listen to some cuts and see if you agree with me. I can't get her voice out of my head. And that's a good thing...
Solo debut from Seattle-based country/pop singer.......2001-06-05
McWilson's previously shared centerstage as a singer and songwriter for the Seattle-based Picketts. This solo debut refines the band's mixture of country, rock and pop with eleven originals and a cover of Brian Wilson's, "'Till I Die."
McWilson continues to mine her country and pop influences, spanning from the 50s onward. She can sing with the wavery emotion of Kelly Willis or the uptempo sass of Connie Francis, and writes songs equally comfortable with pedal steel, chiming twelve strings or a Phil Spector (by way of Sonny Bono) wall-of-sound. Her lyrics spell the life of a sophisticated modern-mom (ala Amy Rigby), a tour widow (husband Scott McCaughey toured with REM) or, as Dave Alvin put it, "a roots rock Sylvia Plath."
All-star support from Alvin (as both producer and guitarist), REM's Peter Buck, drummer Don Heffington and string virtuoso Greg Leisz underlines and exclaims McWilson's every word, from the menacing fuzz-guitar of "Eloda" to the mandolin-backed harmonies of "Fly Away" to the juke-box rock 'n' roll of "Cryin' Out Loud."
McWilson's solo-in-the-spotlight is well-deserved, and extremely well spent.
A Near Miss............2001-05-31
What a fabulous voice! Sadly, it can't quite overcome the very weak production and mixed song quality. The title song, "Someday", and a few others are as good as it gets, but "Little Red Hen" should have been left in the studio. I'll buy whatever McWilson records next just for her amazing vocals, but hope she finds some top-tier collaborators on the next effort.

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27
Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.
She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.
Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.
This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

This is one of the best pop-punk CD's ever released. The songwriting is great, vocals are tremendous, and the production is mostly flawless. Kind of like Allister, Treble Charger, and Lit mixed together. If you like Starting Line, Allister, Sum 41, sr-71, Lit, MxPx, etc. you owe it to yourself to buy this disc. When I play this in my car, all the girls ask me "who is this? they are really good." If the band reads this PLEASE record a follow-up!!!!!
Lucky 7 turns out an amazing album!.......2004-08-29
I bought Lucky 7 only by listening to a couple of the samples and reading reviews. I definitely have not regretted my decision at all. "California Girl" is the obvious single, but I also really like the song "Runaway". This CD might take a few run-throughs to really grow on you, but give it a chance and you WILL NOT be disappointed!

Rockin' Zydeco from NYC.......2002-08-10
After a wild and successful ride through the East Coast's club scene, this dedicated and rockin quintet breaks through with their most accessible album to date. This doesn't mean One Way Track is their best, by any means. Throw together former Mink Deville players Kenny Margolis on accordion and Boris "Bobby" Kinberg on percussion with the Rock Cats' Barry "B.B." Ryan on Guitar- add the great rhythm section of Joe "Legs" Geary and Joe "Dio" D'Astolfo, and you've got one of the greatest bands to play clubs like Lupo's, The Lone Star Cafe, and other acclaimed East Coast clubs for over two decades!Check out "Get Lucky", "Feed the Snake" and their debut on vinyl, "Lucky 7" for a taste of NYC's finest. From classic covers by Clifton Chenier to Doug Sahm, these guys second to no one for great rocking blues and zydeco with a NY twist. They played my wedding in 1990-and people still talk about them!!
