One of the great Classics!.......2006-08-03
Oedipus Tex & Other Choral Calamities is one of the must haves from PDQ Bach. This album has some of his best stuff on it including the title tracks and one of the funniest songs he has composed "classical rap" this is well worth one's time to check out.
hilarity in music.......2002-10-25
Virtually every CD that Peter Schickele has put out under the name of PDQ Bach has been absolutely hilarious. This is one of his best albums - it will have you in stitches in no time flat.
"Oedipus Tex," the title piece, is a stunning parody of (of course) Sophocles "Oedipus Rex" - from the line "the gods are ticked off and now someone must pay" to the ending chorus of "the eyes of Texas are upon you" (set to the tune of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"), the piece is one of the funniest things I have ever heard.
"Classical Rap" - this track alone is worth the whole cost of the album. This "Yuppie" rap combines the stereotypes of rap music with Vivaldi and Bach, and has as its setting the upper West side of Manhattan.
"Knock Knock Cantata" - some of the worst jokes you'll ever hear set to some of the worst music you'll ever hear. The combination of text and setting is really hilarious - talk about form meeting content.
"Birthday Ode for Big Daddy Bach" - the more you know about music, the funnier this piece is.
BUY THIS CD.
Irreverent hilarity.......2002-08-09
Oedipus Tex is both my favorite Country/Western ballad and one of my favorite oratorios!
Classical Rap is, IMHO, the only Rap piece worth listening to.
This is one of "The Bad Boy of Classical Music", Peter Schickele's best recordings.
I am a PDQ junkie!.......2002-08-08
This was my first PDQ recording and it has kept me coming back for more.My father who hates music even LOVES it!It does take a special musician or music lover to appreciate the genius of such a man as Peter Shickele. Being a musician, I have performed numerous PDQ works in the past and they are extremely difficult.Oedipus Tex is by far the most ingenious album created, in my belief, in as far as its contents and musical professionalism.
Brilliant parody.......1999-10-16
Oedipus Tex is a brilliant parody... I had a teacher listen to it once and then it circulated around the entire English department. "Classical Rap" is a wonderful piece as well.

The end of an Era!..........2006-03-22
This is the third ablum from them and probably their last one! Overall a great effort from a beautiful, talented, intelligent band! I just wished they've made more ablums!..
Dark, Spooky, Sexy.......2005-09-21
I have to disagree with all those who rated this album badly. This was my first SS album which I followed up with the re-release of Serpentine Gallery. True, Serpentine Gallery is an exellent album but I think that The Three Calamities is in a class all its own. I have listened to this CD so much since I got it only 2 weeks ago (yeah, I know I am late to this party)I can't even estimate how many. I found SS by a similar artist search on amazon almost by accident. It is truly beautiful music that seems to put you into a trance- especially when listened to in the dark or by candlelight! Tina's voice is amazing- haunting, graceful, and sexy at the same time. She is a truly gifted vocallist! I think if you give this album a chance and you are into this genre, you will love it too.

Excellent!!! Very Much Like Oliva Newton John.......2005-06-29
I really like listening to this album. I am reminded very much of Olivia Newton-John's "Have You Ever Been Mellow" album.
This is very beautiful music to listen and fall asleep to.
Way to go Switchblade!!

A Grand Good-Bye.......2004-11-28
As a late-bloomer to the musical joy that was Switchblade Symphony, I was saddened to learn that "The Three Calamities" was to be their last studio release. You don't have to be a member (or even fan of) gothic subculture to appreciate the songs on this album. Tina Root and Susan Wallace brought something extraordinary to a predominantly fashion-oriented musical genre: they gave it substance & credibility. If you want something calming, yet thought-provoking, this CD is for you. If you want great music to fall asleep by, this CD is for you. If you want something positively eerie to accompany your walks in the woods at night by the light of a full moon... then this CD is for you. That's what makes "The Three Calamities" (and the music of Switchblade Symphony, in general) so appealing: it may help set a tone, but it doesn't dominate the listener's state of mind.
If you were a fan since "Serpentine Gallery", then you'll hear songs that showcase more sophisticated melodies and experienced lyrical wisdom. And if you're discovering Switchblade Symphony for the first time, tunes like 'Invisible', 'Naked Birthday', and 'Into The Sky' will inspire you to search out their earlier works. Overall, "The Three Calamities" is a grand finale to an all-too-short but brilliant duo who broke the repetitive, faded, hopeless mold of gothic music.
Gorgeous! ...and HIGHLY underrated.......2004-08-18
I don't know what kind of crack people are smoking when they say this album is mainstream, or not as good as their other two CD's. This CD is every bit as good as their other ones, although in different ways. If stuff in the mainstream was anything like this, my CD collection would look a lot different. Of every Switchblade album, this one is easily the best example of Tina's vocal talent. Her voice puts Switchblade Symphony MILES above any other goth or darkwave band (really any band for that matter). She tops any other vocalist I've ever heard. Her voice is gorgeous-rich, full, flowing, strong, and angelic. She is one of those rare singers who knows how to put all her heart, soul, and personality into her singing. Furthermore she is classically trained so she really knows how to make the best use of her talent. She also writes incredible vocal melodies- better on here than on previous albums. It is very hard to describe, you must hear it.
The instrumental music, on the other hand, is not as good as on previous switchblade albums, though still very good. It just seems more sparse on this album. Anyway I have searched far and wide to find other bands that can create the mood and vibe that this band does, along with the energy and the talent, the originality, and the sheer beauty all wrapped up into one. So far my search has failed me. The overall feel of this CD is perfect, because it's dreamy and feminine, it has an array of emotions, from, ecstacy to sorrow to anger to just pure "attitude". It is eerie and spooky at times, but not depressing or monochromatic like much goth music. The eerieness is real eerieness instead of a bunch of people trying to sound scary and just sounding cheesy. The album is genuine and from the heart. While I can't say enough good things about this album, it does have it's weak spots. Those being the songs therapy and copycat, which tend toward a cheesy sound and the melodies are far more simplistic and repetitive than this band is capable of.
