3 out of 5 stars OK but not anything like good kansas..........2001-03-26

I remember when this album first came out in the record stores. None of us(huge KANSAS fans) expected any such thing and we had not yet known that steve had left kansas. Of course my brother and i had to buy a copy because we were such fans of the band and of walsh as a singer. At the same time we didn't expect too much. We loved kansas for their art rock sensibilities and musicianship and frankly steve's writing contributions of late in audio visions and monolith left something to be desired. I especially was perturbed by "anything for you" a song on audio visions which is more like something from a love sick 13 year old than a rock legend who was pushing 30 years old. If that wasn't enough there is that damn cover which looks like this is a solo effort from one of the bay city rollers not the lead singer of rocks finest. What is that? A cartoon of steve in his typical short shorts and knee pad with giant guns that look bigger than him. On the back cover is a portrait of a well groomed steve with leather jacket slun over the shoulder in an obvious attempt by the record company to market him as a teenage heart throb. Give me a break!

Of course it's the music that matters and most of what you have here is pretty decent. The first 4 songs or what made up side one on the Lp is pretty much mediocre rock music that nobody would care about if it was somebody else singing them. "So many nights" is nice power ballad and the others are ok for hard rock. It's the last three songs that i really enjoyed and those songs that made up side two on the LP "Every step of the way is steve's anthem a great 7 minutes of of where he came from and what he has been about. "Just how it feels" is a gorgeous song that steve dedicated to his grandmother. For some reason "wait untill tommorow" became the most important song to me at the time. It's really a bit depressing about not wanting to face another day. Very powerful and moving and the song includes a terrific dixie dregs jam.

It's not kansas but it does have enough solid material to justify a 4 star rating. Because of the price i knocked it down to 3*.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Solo Debut.......2001-03-08

Schemer Dreamer (SD) is Steve Walsh's first solo album, recorded in 1980 having split from Kansas.

SD is an essential purchase for any fan of Walsh and Kansas and features a good collection of songs. Absolute standouts are Every Step Of The Way and So Many Nights, both of which are instant classics and would feel right at home on any Kansas album, Audio Visions and before.

My only criticism is that it lacks the bite in places that Walsh had when with Kansas and when he wrote with Kerry Livgren. For instance Wait Until Tomorrow is just crying our for better lead guitar work that someone like Livgren could have provided, as is clear from his contribution on You Think You Got It Made. I'm also not a fan of the trumpet and sax on Wait Until Tomorrow.

That said this is still a strong album - so its a pity that it's only available on import.

Recommendation to buy.

5 out of 5 stars STEVE WALSH~ AN AWESOME VOCALIST.......2001-02-09

In updating my music collection to CDs,this album was a definite MUST. I was glad to see Steve branch out on his own, and create a work of art that was a refreshing change from the heavier lyrics of Kansas. His voice is unlike any othe singer I have ever heard...solid and strong, yet senstive and emotional respectively. My favourite song of the cd is "Every Step of the Way". The lyrics in this song tell the story of Steve's climb to the ladder of his success. "Just how it feels" is another good one, a bit slower and easier, in a sentimental sort of way. Of all the qualities of the cd, I'd have to say the best part is, of course,...his voice..... his ability to reach the high notes, and low notes with such clarity, strength, and emotion. If you have enjoyed listening to Steve sing with the group Kansas, you will definitely enjoy this solo CD. I will probably wear it out soon, as I already have some old Kanas CDs. YOU GO STEVE!

5 out of 5 stars The best kept secret in rock and roll.......2000-04-25

Everyone who loves rock looks for that elusive musical gem. Steve Walsh produced such a project with Schemer-Dreamer. He is in great voice throughout the CD and the music is dynamite. "Every Step of the Way" is one of the best rock songs every written. "Wait Until Tomorrow" features the gut-wrenching guitar of Steve Morse. The rest of the CD is filled with quality tunes and has already proven to be timeless. This one may not have gotten much radio play, but it is one of the greatest rock CDs ever. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars we'll never get too far.......2000-04-19

How can i say the great pleasure to discover this lp in 1979 in France. For me, Steve's voice and songs were the best I can hear. I saw him with Kansas at Cap d'Agde (with Foreigner) and I never forgot this unique moment. Schemer-Dreamer is pure energy!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent single.......2004-04-01

In 2001, Ozzy Osbourne released his eighth studio album, Down To Earth. To accompany its release, two singles were released from the album - Gets Me Through and Dreamer. Read on for my review of the latter single.

Dreamer is an emotional tune, certainly Ozzy at his most emotional. This song actually reminds me of his old Black Sabbath song Changes, although in my book this is the superior song. Likewise, you get an edited version of Gets Me Through as a B-Side. Another B-Side is Black Skies, a track that isn't available anywhere else! Because of that little rarity, this single is highly recommended to Ozzy fans. Oh, and you get some enhanced CD video footage too.

Overall this is an excellent single, but its availability is a huge problem - it isn't regularly available in America! That really sucks, because America is where Ozzy's largest fan base is. Still, if you're a big time Ozzy fan, and you want the rare B-Side, it's worth importing or hunting down.

2 out of 5 stars Repackaging Ayreon songs doesn't work here..........2007-02-03

To start, let me say that I love Ayreon, and I love Arjen Anthony Lucassen's music from Ayreon, even with the less spellbinding Star One, and even his old solo album "Pools of Sorrow~Waves of Joy" under the name Anthony. I even love Astrid's voice.

But this album simply isn't worth the time or money...

What this album essentially is is old Ayreon songs randomly selected from their albums (before The Human Equation came out) and played differently, using slightly different instruments and some minor changes to the sound or tone or tempo. Otherwise, the melody and rhythm are the same. Astrid sings new lyrics over the old songs, essentially making them into new songs unrelated to the originals, which are less than stellar in themselves, though her voice is quite good.

While Astrid is a beautiful singer and Arjen is a beautiful musician, this album is simply less than stellar. Listening to a song which uses the same melody from "Ye Courtyard Minstrel Boy" only makes me want to listen to the original "Ye Courtyard Minstrel Boy" after finishing the song.

5 out of 5 stars Ambeon : "Fate Of A Dreamer".......2007-02-01

This is extremely enjoyable music. I bought this on a whim based on the reviews here, and the comparisons made to that of Lacuna Coil{a favorite band of mine}. Although I wasn't disappointed, and "Fate Of A Dreamer" does have a "Coilish" tone / approach to it, it's still not quite the same when all is said and done....

Ambeon has a more, dare I say, The Gathering "dreamy" sound to it. At first listen to "Fate Of A Dreamer", I thought I was listening to an extended version of "Mandylion". It also gave me hints of an all time favorite "Aegis" from Theatre Of Tragedy. "Fate Of A Dreamer" has it's soft / angelic moments, and yet it also has it's medlodic guitar solos, and heavy riffages too. "Fate Of A Dreamer" is also extremely well produced in my opinion, which makes it even that much more enjoyable when listening...

If you enjoy female fronted Metal, bands like The Gathering / Lacuna Coil / Within Temptation / Theatre Of Tragedy / Amaran / After Forever / Epica, you should give this release a listen. It's a near masterpice, and well worth the extra money. 5 Stars / Highly Recommended....

5 out of 5 stars It has been called the fate of a dreamer..........2006-12-08

I got this album back in March after being lucky enough to find an affordable copy on eBay and I'm so glad I jumped at the chance when I did. This is a mesmerizing collection of ten songs that will have any ambient/prog/metal fan drooling over the lush, atmospheric songwriting of Arjen and Astrid. The music bears a few similarities to The Gathering (Astrid in particular sings in a similar way as Anneke van Giersbergen) but there are still hints of Arjen's main project, Ayreon, here and there and it is a fascinating combination. I don't think I've heard anything quite like this before and FOAD may also come as a bit of a surprise to those already acquainted with Ayreon, but don't let that turn you off. This may not be the most readily accessible music, but after a few spins in the CD player, the quality and talent that went into making this masterpiece quickly begin to shine through. Astrid, only 14 years of age at the time of this recording, will lull you into a beautiful state of euphoria and Arjen continues to impress us with his signature guitar and synth passages that Ayreon fans will quickly recognize. I'd say the best tracks on this album are the single "Cold Metal," "Sick Ceremony," "Ashes" and the dreamy "Surreal," but it's probably best to listen to the CD as a whole. I'd also recommend trying to find the b-side "Merry-Go-Round" which was only released on the Cold Metal single (which is also out of print - I had to track down a copy on Limewire) and in my opinion is good enough to have been put on the actual album. This is an all-around great buried treasure that I think is worth the extra digging to find. Maybe fate will be kind enough to the next dreamer who finds a copy of this rare jewel! 10/10

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely Stunning CD. A Must Have...........2006-02-28

It is a true shame that this cd has gone out of print. I was lucky enough to outain a used copy of this cd and all i can say it what an amazing album this is. Astrids Voice is angelic and stunning and so powerful for her age. What and incredible talent she is. And as for A A Lucassen what can you say but another amazing album by the brilliant composer / musician... Every thing he has put out is top quality from top to bottom. No mater what band he is in. Star One, Ayreon, Ambeon, and now even his latest Stream of Passion. But getting back to Ambeon it is one of the most beautiful albums i have ever heard. This is a true must have. Why this has gone out of print is unbelievable....this womans voice deserves to be heard....and for any fan of A A Lucassen you simply must get a copy of this cd....you will NOT be dissappointed.. One of his finest efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Multi-layered, angelic, dripping with melancholy.......2004-12-18

Ambeon is a side project of Arjen Anthony Lucassen, best known for his compositions in the highly-acclaimed progressive rock/metal bands Ayreon and Star One. But this album is nothing like his prog-metal entities.

If you are ONLY into metal and don't like anything mellow at all, this album may not be for you (although I know many "strictly metal" fans who make an exception for this album). Now, don't get me wrong. This isn't Barry Manilow or Air Supply mellow. It still has a strong rock beat, albeit a very slow one, and there are distortion guitars in places. Mostly it is driven instrumentally by Arjen's spooky keboard effects and the soothing fretless bass lines of Walter Latupeirissa.

On top of the awesome music are the stunning vocals of 14-year-old Astrid Van Der Veen. This young lady is such a spectacular talent on this record. She wrote and sang such beautiful vocal melodies; multi-layered, angelic, and positively dripping with melancholy. If the music here doesn't bring you to tears, her voice will.

Fate of a Dreamer has a very gloomy feel to it; very gothic. If you listen closely (something that is very fun to do with this album) you'll hear all kinds of strange effects in the background. Sprinkled throughout, you will also find the flute and fiddle virtuosos of John and Pat McManus (formerly of the 80's Irish rock band Mama's Boys) as well as additional snyths from Erik Norlander and backing vocals from his wife, Lana Lane.

The best part of the Ambeon project is that it serves two roles: you can slap on your headphones, crank up the volume, and get lost in it's magical melodies or you can simply play it softly in the background while you work or visit with friends and family. I have played this album for many people and virtually all of them are impressed, no matter what style of music they are into.

If you were ever drawn into the gloomy atmospheres of 70s Pink Floyd or even the modern-day Lacuna Coil and Evanescence, Fate of a Dreamer might be a great cd to add to your collection. I know it was a great addition to mine.

Album Description

Nicky Hopkins' finest solo album, the memorably titled 'The Tin Man Was A Dreamer' is a solid piece of engagingly edgy pop-rock - picture Elton John's early '70s work with more variety, a few rough edges, & a bit less ego. As one would expect, Hopkins' piano playing (augmented by the organ in spots) dominates most of the songs, but there's ample room for strong contributions from George Harrison (working as 'George O'Hara') on lead & slide guitar on four of the tracks, & Mick Taylor on lead & acoustic guitars on four tracks. The rest of the band includes Klaus Voormann on bass & Bobby Keys on sax, as well as future Tubes alumnus Prairie Prince on drums. Sony Japan. 1997.

One of my all-time favorite albums! Yes, my copy is an old and, I'm sure, worn album. (I haven't had a turntable hooked up in at least 10 years, but I still have my album collection.) I've been aquiring CD versions of my "faves". I'm glad to see this is available to add to me CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars Banana Anna, Dolly and Edward; Missing Essentials Until Now!.......2001-02-26

Oh, so long ago (like 20 years) I lost my platter (12" vinyl) of this recording. This album is ESSENTIAL! I remember it all! I've searched for it and asked for it everywhere. I couldn't give it up! Imagine my DISBELIEF when I find, it is finally available on CD! (thanks, Amazon!) My cup runneth over! The Tin Man Was a Dreamer is an all time fundamental recording. Banana Anna is hot hot hot! Dolly is a love ballad. Pig's boogie (my favorite!) is fiery and skilled piano gymnastics. I can't categorize this album. It's insight and talent, with complexities so smooth, it feels elementary. Albums in a similar vein may be Traffic - Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys, Little Feat - Dixie Chicken, and the keyboard talent and dexterity of Keith Emerson. Nicky is a quiet man and a thinker. The piano on this album is phenomenal! Nicky Hopkins is a phenomenon. (He was the Rolling Stones keyboardsman, too, ya know.) This is hot, happy, stimulating music. Your collection is incomplete without it.

Nicky Hopkins was one of the driving forces behind Quicksilver Messenger Servce, as well as a big, in demand session piano player. He just has this unique piano playing gift, and has a voice that is so distinctive. His voice really grows on you. This album is long gone from my collection, and it is nice to finally see it available on CD. The one song I have sung from time to time is Dolly....."Dolly, where are you? Dolly, come see me through. Dolly, I'm so in love with you....."
I will have to save a few pennies for this one, but I remember this being Nicky's best effort.

2 out of 5 stars The best of an era.......2005-09-06

Nobody added more to more rock and roll albums than Nicky Hopkins. He was a full member of The Jeff Beck Group (along with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart), Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Jerry Garcia Band. As a sideman, he moved the sound to another level for Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller, Matthew Sweet, the Beatles and (listen to "Angie") the Rolling Stones' very best work.

Here, he shows off his instrumental skills but the writing and singing are painful.

        5 out of 5 stars The Dreamer.......2005-08-15

Nicky Hopkins was an underrated musician who decided to try a solo album with this venture. He played with The Rolling Stones as a studio musician, and with Quicksilver Messenger Service as a full fledged member. The first five tracks of the album were the best in my opinion, and after that it flounders, revealing Hopkin's weakness as a rock and roll writer. However, 'Dolly' is a haunting ballad that includes Mick Taylor on lead guitar, and 'Edward' is an interesting instrumental that rocks. The quality of those first five tracks more than makes up for the rest of the album which unfortunately seemed like an afterthought. However, ultimately, it is a classic and one I searched for on CD for many years. Thank you Amazon!
