Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31
If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.
Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25
It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.
pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19
It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!
Excellent CD.......2005-03-20
I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10
Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!
Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27
Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25
As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !
A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

Wanting to hear the sound of a balalaika!.......2005-10-18
I have not received my cd yet, but I was expecting to receive one with balalaika only, so I am already disappointed. In the samples, the orchestra is so predominate I cannot tell which is the balalaika. Thanks, Violet
From Russia, with Strings.......2004-08-09
The Osipov Russian Folk Orchestra made this fine recording some four decades ago, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union were barely on speaking terms. I imagine that some of the people who bought this record found themselves on FBI or CIA observation lists. Still, it would have been worth it, for the sheer exuberance of the music alone. The performances are bold and exciting, tinged with a hint of danger, and the listener is carried away on a crest of winter sleigh rides through places like Moscow and Vladivostock. Sure, the orchestra was capitalizing on the popularity of Dr. Zhivago, but at least they were able to find an audience. There's a little bit of hiss, given the antiquated recording instruments of the time, but it isn't enough to distract from the music. In fact, it's barely audible. I understand that they have since released a remastered version of the disc, but I'm always suspicious of perfection. One other thing: the cover leads you to believe that this is solely a balalaika show, but that isn't quite the case. There is, in fact, a whole orchestra here, but it is used quite smartly. Those other instruments give the music the air of authenticity, and create a kind of old world mood, but it's the balalaikas that carry the day.
Spectacular.......2004-07-15
This album is not only one of the finest technically, but also musically. It was recorded back in the early sixties with the finest equipment and the finest audio technique ever devised. This has to be one of the most enjoyable listening experiences the listener will ever experience, as is all of the Mercury Living Presence series. We are privilaged to have these great recordings re-made on CD, and this particular one has to be at the top of the list. It will challenge any other recording technique, and it will lift your spirits every time you listen to it!
Nothing beats this for exuberance.......2000-02-06
The sound of massed balalaikas is a real treat, especially when recorded with as much vividness and realism as on this disc. The Osipov Folk Orchestra also consists of bass balalaikas, accordions, flutes, Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, and percussion and they produce quite a kaleidoscope of sound! I particularly enjoy the comedic Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, heard to their most humorous effect in the Tchaikovsky piece, which is guaranteed to make you smile. This recording uncannily conveys the impression of a live event. Of course, the performers deserve most of the credit for this. Their unanimity of attack and sheer exuberance are heartstopping. Even if you think you don't like Russian folk music, give this a try!

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Having outgrown their Stray Cats and Green Day phases, the Living End join forces with Midnight Oil and Silverchair producer Nick Launay for an album that firmly establishes them as Australia's Great Rock Hope. Like late, great power-pop revivalists Material Issue (to whom the chorus of "Dirty Man" bears a more than passing resemblance), this Melbourne power trio fully justifies their plundering of past musical forms thanks to enthusiasm, chops, and songwriting talent. From the fist-in-the-air populism of its title track to the anthemic "Silent Victory" (which Launay gives the full Midnight Oil treatment), Roll On signals the Living End's readiness for an international pop overthrow. --Bill Forman

Not the best one.......2007-01-19
The Living End first album blew my mind away, so i was expecting to get blown by this one. But the album wasn't a clomplete let down theres a few good songs in here.
One of the best rock bands of our time.......2006-03-24
I've had this album ever since it first came out, but i havent written reviews until now. The Living End is one of the most overlooked and underrated bands out there today, and there is no excuse for this because theyre signed to a major label, Reprise. This is the same label that shoves Green Day and My Chemical Romance down your throat 24/7 but these guys barely get any promotion. The songwriting ability of this band is phenomenal, and they draw their influences from many places, punk, rockabilly, classic rock, but wind up sounding simply like a rock band, not a scatter-brained band striving to cram every influence they can into an album just for the sake of it. I would start naming the best songs, but then I'd be simply rewriting the entire tracklisting. If you want a band that has the potential to rejuvenate stagnant rock radio, then this is it.
Unbelievable.......2005-10-09
To be honest, I never thought I was much of a punk/rock fan. This is not actually true, but only because lately I have unfortunately classed punk as the music (if it can be called that) that is played these days. I'm sure you know the bands i'm talking about...Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and so on...I happen to hate these bands with a passion. The Living End, however, are in a class of their own, and their music is the true definition of the genre 'punk rock'. Being an aussie myself, I've always had a certain like for any musicians born and bred down under, but a band like the Living End have earned their reputation regardless. These guys are absolutely amazing, in both their songwriting and musical talents. This is well demonstrated in one of their best efforts, 'Roll On'.
Chris Cheney can only be described as a genius on guitar, able to make the 3-piece band (unsusually small for the modern day) sound at times like a 5 or 6 piece. He almost deserves to be among the greats, such are his talents, not to mention his amazing singing capabilities. Scott Owen's driving double bass complement Cheney perfectly, and Andy Strachan's drums are solid to say the least (although perhaps not as masterful as their previous drummer, Travis Demsey).
On the whole, this is a must listen for any true rock, punk or metal fan; after all, my favourite band is Metallica, whose style of music couldn't differ more. The highlights of the album include the title track, Roll On, which is an absolute killer opener; Riot On Broadway, Carry Me Home and Don't Shut The Gate are also my favourites, although you may have your own opinions on each track. Recommended for any fans of good music.
Best Aussie Rock Band Ever!!.......2005-02-03
I bought this C.D. with a friend of mine four years ago, because we were desperate to hear more good-quality punk-rock music. So we took a guess and we bought this c.d., and wow did we guess right!! We would fight over the c.d. all the time, until of course we burned it so that each one would have our own copies. Wow!...I've never been a big fan of Green Day but I know that these guys are much MUCH (im not kidding, people, so sue me) better than Green Day. They play powerful punk-rock, theyre only a three-piece although they sound like 5 or 6 and they play with their hearts. The guitarist is maybe one of the best i've heard play, and the bass kicks ass as well. ditto for the drums. Four and a half years later, this is still one of my most favorite albums in rock. I don't get tired of these guys, and now, unfortunately, i lent it to someone else and that person has not given it back to me yet. So im really pissed off and i really want to kill him for not giving it back...oh well, at least i can buy the new album and NOT lend it to ANYONE AGAIN meanwhile. But after hearing so many mediocre punk-rock bands and punk-wannabes, and other low-budget bands, I have to say that nobody's better than these guys. And ive heard theyre even better live! So buy this album if you want to hear good punkrock music and you want to stop that britney spears plague or that usher plague and those other hip hop idiots. These guys will blow your mind. "Pictures in the Mirror" is my favorite tracks as well as the energic "Roll On", and "Blood on Your Hands". All are very original and have different styles. These guys are 'all-around' musicians and they can play anything and play it good! This is good quality rock that will kick ass to all those fake rockers (Good Charlotte, Maroon 5, Fountains of Wayne, etc. etc.) that are on the 'hotlist' right now. LE will not decieve you. Take it from a punk-rock/alt-rock/indie-rock freak like me.
Just a Prisoner of the Great Guitar Society.......2005-01-02
Roll On is unbelievable. There's many reasons why but musicianship is one and good songs is another. After two terrific albums this mindboggling trio has made a third that is one of the hundred greatest rock albums ever. Not only is every song a gem but there are two killer videos included that will play on your computer(much to my surprise when I thought I was just going to play the audio tracks and I was treated to Pictures in the Mirror and the classic Prisoner of Society). These vids give you a good idea of the band's energy when on stage.
The first time I saw them was at Slim's in 2001. During the first guitar break in Roll On, Chris Cheney shouts out "Hello San Francisco, how the f**k are ya?". Then they proceeded to blow the roof of the place. I hadn't seen anything so fresh, so jarring, so original, so g*d d**n good in many, many years.
It goes without saying that Cheney is near genius on guitar. Nobody can switch in middle of a phrase and the switch again through three different genres like Cheney. And this is in a high energy punk format. And he sings. And the songs are great. They range all over the place.
Scott Owens sings too. He plays an upright bass at a milliom miles an hour or maybe it's a million and a half kilometers an hour. In any case, he can do that will he's standing on it. Yeah, standing on it. While it's upright!! I've seen them four times and Owen's role in the mix still mystifies me. He's a large reason, because of his bizarre riffs and amazing harmony, that this trio sounds fuller that most six piece bands.
Unfortunately Travis Demsey no longer drums for the band, though his replacement does an admirable job. without exception, Demsey is the greatest drummer I've ever seen. I'm happy to see that the band was able to continue when they parted ways. Big shoes to fill.
Roll On has been used for Espn's X Games and for Fahrenheit 911. So if you were wondering what that music was and you wanted to own it, this is the album. It's one of the few things out there worth the money you spend on it and it doesn't grow old. I just wish they would get to The States a little more often than once every three years because they're hot.

It is great to have this material to play in any motor vehicle. Most newer vehicles do not have cassette any more. My new Kia Amanti has both a cassette and a CD making all my old favorites possible to play.
Who else, but Buti.......2003-01-18
Among opera singers there is often a role associasted with a singer (for example, Callas/Tosca, Bastianini/Carlo Gerard, Gobi/Scarpia)..But in time others attempt the same role with various degrees of success, and sometimes even unseat the front runner!...Not so with Carlo Buti...there will never be another popular song interpreter like him, who has been imitated but never equaled. Every song in this collection - some of which are very hard to find - is recommended 100% by one who has heard him in person as well as in recordings. Bravo Buti, Bravissimo!

A piece of history.......2006-06-03
Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.
A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19
I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

Testament of Freedom.......2007-07-12
I sung the Testament in a men chorus in 1966.Most of the men were veterans as was I. I only wish the powers to be would include it in the July celebration in Washington D.C.
Wonderful Piece of Americana.......2007-01-27
I bought, and was very disappointed in, the New York Choral Society's recording of "Testament of Freedom" a couple of years ago. The diction was indisctinct, the voices were overpowered by the instruments, and the sound in general left a lot to be desired. I was delighted when I accidentally stumbled on this CD and found out that "Testament of Freedom" was included.
The Turtle Creek Chorale does an excellent job with the title piece. The vocal sound of the group is wonderfully rich, and the balance between the instruments and voices is about as good as you can get with a piece that calls for such a large instrumental ensemble. Plus, I prefer the men's choir arrangement of "Testament," largely because I remember singing it for Region Choir auditions over 10 years ago. My only complaint is that in some parts of "We Have Counted the Cost," it's hard to understand the words if you don't already know them; same thing with "We Fight Not For Glory." But these are minor quibbles.
"Testament" is a must-own CD for any American music lover, as it feautures the work of a criminally-underperformed composer. It's worth buying for the performance "Testament of Freedom" alone, although all the tracks are excellent, particularly the "Alleluia". 5 out of 5.
A Great Recording of Great Choral Works.......2006-01-02
I had to write this review because it is a crime that this wonderful CD has a ho-hum overall rating just because one of the two previous reviewers didn't bother to find out what it was before he ordered. Yes, Amazon had it mislabled (it's better now, but still misleading by putting Bernstein's name first), but I had no trouble figuring out that it was a men's ensemble. In fact, that's the primary reason I chose this CD.
The feature work on this CD is the "Testament of Freedom" by Randall Thompson. For this work, Mr. Thompson chose to set various writings of Thomas Jefferson to music. In doing so, he has helped preserve these sometimes forgotten texts and at the same time, demonstrated why he is one of America's best loved choral composers. Unfortunately, there are not many recordings of this work, and many of those you'll find are sung by mixed choirs. This work was intended for, and sounds best when sung by, a men's chorus. That alone sets this CD apart.
The biggest weakness of this recording is the balance between the wind ensemble and the chorus. In the forte sections, the chorus gets drowned out a bit. That's always a danger in master works, particularly when you pit voices against winds. However, I found this to be a minor flaw and have heard much worse examples.
I recommend this CD for all who love choral music and particularly for those who have yet to experience the music of Randall Thompson. It is also interesting to note that the words of Thomas Jefferson, written so long ago, still ring true in these trying times (especially the third and fourth passages).
(The following acquired from http://www.turtlecreek.org/music/linerpages/testament.htm)
Lyrics:
The Testament of Freedom
Text: Thomas Jefferson
The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time; the hand of force may destroy but cannot disjoin them.
---A Summary View of the Rights of British America (1774)
We have counted the cost of this contest, and find nothing so dreadful as voluntary slavery. Honor, justice, and humanity forbid us tamely to surrender that freedom which we received from our gallant ancestors, and which our innocent posterity have a right to receive them from us. We cannot endure the infamy and guilt of resigning succeeding generations to that wretchedness which inevitably awaits them if we basely entail heredity bondage upon them. Our cause is just. Our union perfect. Our internal resources are great...We gratefully acknowledge, as signal instances of the Divine favor towards us, that His Providence would not permit us to be called into this severe controversy until we were grown up to our present strength, and been previously exercised in warlike operation, and possessed of the means of defending ourselves. With hearts fortified with these animating reflections, we most solemnly, before God and the world, declare that, exerting the utmost energy of those powers which we have been compelled by our enemies to assume, we will, in defiance of every hazard, with unabating firmness and perseverance, employ for the preservation of our liberties; being with one mind resolved to die freemen rather than to live as slaves.
---Declaration of Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms (1775)
We fight not for glory or for conquest. We exhibit to mankind the remarkable spectacle of a people attacked by unprovoked enemies, without any imputation or even suspicion of offense. They boast of their privilege and civilization, and yet proffer no milder conditions than servitude or death. In our native land, in defense of the freedom that is our birthright and which we ever enjoyed until the late violation of it; for the protection of our property, acquired by the honest industry of our forefathers and ourselves; against violence actually offered; we have taken up arms. We shall lay them down when hostilities shall cease on the part of the aggressors and all danger of their being renewed shall be removed, and not before.
---Declaration of Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms (1775)
I shall not die without hope that light and liberty are on steady advance... And even should the cloud of barbarism and despotism again obscure the science and liberties of Europe, this country remains to preserve and restore light and liberty to them... The flames kindled on the 4th of July, 1776, have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume these engines and all who work them.
---Letter to John Adams, Monticello (1821)
One of my favorite CD's.......2005-08-10
The actual title of this CD is Testament, and the principle performing group is the Dallas-based Turtle Creek Chorale. I am perplexed by Amazon's listing this magnificent recording under a generic descriptive title and then naming the accompanying Dallas Wind Symphony as the only "performer." Someone must have been asleep at the wheel.
Now to the recording itself -- I love choral music, and am especially drawn to male voices. I even enjoy hearing all-male college glee clubs singing their boisterous drinking songs. What a joy then to happen upon this recording which features strong, well trained voices in addition to exquisite pieces of music, some of which are among my favorites. The highlight of the CD for me is Randall Thompson's, "Testament of Freedom." The CD is worth its price just for this one 24-minute jewel. The rest is like tasty icing on a cake.
Disappointing.......2002-02-20
I was disappointed with this album. First, it did not notice that the Turtle Creek Chorale is an all male ensemble. ... Secondly, the quality of the recording is poor. The sound is muddy and lacks brightness. I had to turn my stereo way up just to hear it. The orchestra sounds great, but the mix of the voices is very poor. I definately do not recommend.

Dance hits of the thirties and forties.......2003-02-28
For those of us raised on the music of the second half of the twentieth century, the music contained on this CD does not sound like music to dance to - more like easy listening music to relax to - but Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians were one of the leading dance bands of their day.
They had 26 number one hits of their own on the American charts, of which 23 can be found here. They also had two other number ones as the backing group to solo singers Kate Smith and Bing Crosby. Kate and Guy's band hit number one with River stay `way from my door, also included here. Harbour lights, although included here, was (according to Billboard) only a number two hit for Guy.
Two of the three missing (You're driving me crazy and Boo hoo), together with the song that Bing and Guy's band took to number one (You're getting to be a habit with me), can be found on another ASV compilation, Sweetest music this side of heaven. Just one of Guy's number one hits is hard to find - The last round up, although other versions of that song are readily available.
Anybody familiar with Kate's music will enjoy her song, especially as (at the time of writing this review) this is the only CD on which it is available, although it has previously been released on compilations of Kate's music.
The remaining tracks mainly feature Carmen Lombardo on vocals. He was the singer up to 1941. Although the band had many more hits after that, with several different singers, nearly all the number ones occurred during Carmen's years.
Even if you are new to Guy's music, fans of the Great American Songbook will recognise some of the songs, including Stars fell on Alabama (which I first came across via Doris Day's lovely cover), Red sails in the sunset (my favorite cover of this is by Frances Langford), September in the rain (Dinah Washington made this song her own) and Harbour lights, which Frances Langford had a top ten hit with in 1937 (it was not only her biggest hit, but possibly her finest recording), but the song became a lot more popular in 1950 when Guy's version was one of several top ten hits. It received a further boost when the Platters covered it later in the fifties - that is the version most people are now familiar with.
People may not dance to this kind of music these days, but Guy and his orchestra made some very high quality music. This collection contains 25 of their finest recordings. If you only buy one CD of Guy's music, this is the one to go for.
