4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

5 out of 5 stars USMA Glee Club scores a real hit.......2006-11-14

This album is awe-inspiring. I bought the album after hearing an out take from "Men of Freedom", the tune is from an old Welsh battle song. You will recognize the tune if you saw Zulu Dawn with Michael Caine. Many of the other songs are equally powerful and mesmerizing. The only songs I didn't like were when the Glee club used guest soloists. They were less impressive and, in my opinion, took away from the strength of the group.

I liked the multiple verses sung from America, I wished they would have given the Star Spangled Banner the same treatment. The Mansions of the Lord is powerful and supremely reverent, as is Rise Up. I would dearly like to hear more from this talented group of soldiers.

5 out of 5 stars Reverent, Full of Love.......2006-09-26

When I saw and heard this music broadcast Veteran's Day on TBN and my friends serving in our Armed Forces in Iraq saw it broadcast on Armed Forces Network, I was so happy to find the stereo CD and companion Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound DVD on Amazon. I cannot stop listening to it! The 60 minute musical program, reminiscent of the great concept albums of years ago, is one of the most reverent, intelligent and passionate portrayals of America's character ever produced. It contains many styles of choral music - all superbly performed by the world famous Cadet Glee Club of West Point arrayed in breathtaking formation on the altar of the massive 100 year old Cadet Chapel. There are richly textured vocal a capella songs such as "Rise Up O Men of God", "Manisons of the Lord", one of the most popular new hymns written, and "America (My Country `Tis of Thee)". Your buttons will burst with pride when you hear the brand new song "Men of Freedom" introduced by a single Cadet then followed by a cascade of additional voices building to a unified and thunderous declaration of defiant freedom in a style reminiscent of the great Welsh Male Choirs. Four songs highlight the power and majesty of the largest church organ in the world. You'll have to fight the urge to stand at attention when you hear and feel its power kick in on "Lest We Forget", "On Great Lone Hills", "Jerusalem" and "This Christmastide". The musical variety is further enhanced by the addition of brass and percussion for the rousing marches, "The Longest Day" and "Non Nobis". When was the last time you heard these two songs - one by world famous singer, songwriter and teen idol, Paul Anka and the other a medieval celebration of thanksgiving sung in Latin! The rich background vocals of the Cadet Glee Club musically frame two songs that underpin the message of this album - Bravery and Sacrifice. "Into the Fire" by NYPD's Daniel Rodriguez made me want to immediately rise up and rush to anyone's aid and when he holds that note at the end - wow! Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga's performance of the classic Christian hit, "Via Dolorosa", (one of the top 50 Christian songs of all time), is "The Passion of the Christ" embodied in a 5 minute song. You will alternate between tears and goose bumps. Her performance of the Spanish stanza will overwhelm you. Finally, Irish song writing master, Phil Coulter's wistful "Take Me Home" is accompanied by beautiful piano and guitar and introduced by a new poem entitled "I Am A Soldier" that is sobering reminder of the oath our soldiers swear to and the actions they are bound to take. God bless them!

A great bonus of the CD and DVD is that they both include a stylish lyric booklet as well as commentary by the producer on why he chose each song.

On the back cover of the CD and DVD cases is the statement that this production was created to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, and the great values of America that they defend. This it surely does!! Also, it states that the producer is contributing a portion of his wholesale proceeds from its sale to organizations assisting our wounded soldiers. Bravo, Mr. Coppi.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2006-07-19

Wonderful songs and wonderful renditions of the songs. I must say, though, that the numbers would have been better if they were performed with more "ooomph" (for instance, "The Star Spangled Banner" could have been sung with more power and the arrangement could have used more creativity). The wisest decision on this CD was the inclusion of the numbers from Ms. Lea Salonga (whose hauntingly beautiful voice is able to effectively draw listeners in) and Daniel Rodriguez, one of America's newest tenors. Overall a good CD.

3 out of 5 stars A real disappointment..........2006-06-10

I was so excited to stumble upon this album when a local music store was going out of business and selling CD's at great discounts. I love Glee Club music, I love patriotic music, and I love cathedral/chapel accoustics. Unfortunately, this album did not live up to its billing.

My primary complaints with this recording are twofold: the overuse of unison singing and the unnecessary inclusion of guest soloists. The beauty of glee club music is the rich chords, which are thankfully heard in many songs. To my dismay, though, there are many songs that mostly or entirely omit the beautiful harmonies that make glee clubs great.

As for the guest soloists, I don't understand why a singing group which obviously has many wonderful voices would bring in outsiders for an album like this. Actually, I do know why they would do it, and it's obviously a marketing thing that has financial implications. As reasonable as this may seem, it just cheapens the experience for me. Another great feature of glee clubs (and college choirs more generally) is the lack of polished, perfect, professional singers. There is something raw, authentic, and refreshing about a bunch of college kids singing together. Why bring in random people with no particular connection to the group?

To be fair, "Rise Up, O Men of God" and "Mansions of the Lord" are fantastic. I'll continue to play this album to listen to those songs. However, much of the remainder is somewhat forgettable.

Mapfumo, born in 1945, is styled the "Lion Of Zimbabwe" because of his unceasing socio-political activism and iconic world profile. Beginning with his involvement in the fight to transform white-dominated Rhodesia into the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980, he has devoted his life to combating corruption and injustice everywhere. Forced into exile by his criticism of Robert Mugabe's quarter-century-old regime, he now lives in the USA. Meanwhile, although he is unquestionably his nation's biggest star, his output is presently banned there. Mapfumo's musical style, a suavely melodic mixture of local triple rhythms, sometimes flavored by reggae and other tributaries, is known as chimurenga (the Shona word for struggle). It still packs a punch here, whether fronted by repetitive mbira (thumb piano) and guitar riffs, church-like organs, rib-crunching bass, close harmony and unison choirs, or blasts of martial brass. His message remains of paramount importance, whether speaking of intimate concerns, such as in the ineffably tender "Mukanzi Wangu," where a wife patiently awaits the return of her husband, a migrant worker, or addressing the commonality of all peoples under God in "Marudzi Nemarudzi." Mapfumo, the poet of righteous conflict, has fashioned a work of singular beauty, power and maturity. --Christina Roden

Album Description

2006 release by the single most popular musician in Zimbabwe for over 25 years. Mapfumo draws on such an array of genres - African jazz, classic R&B, Shona spirit music, rock, reggae and a variety of local Zimbabwean styles - that he has formed a completely new style of music, which he calls 'Chimurenga'. Loping rhythms form the bedrock for the groove which is constant, incessant and which underpins the horns, the vocals, the African girl's chorus and chants - it is as unique and in it's own way as influential on his country as Fela Kuti or even western performers such as James Brown.

Album Details

Thomas Mapfumo is Known as the Lion of Zimbabwe for Good Reason. As a Young Musician He was Jailed by Ian Smith's White Government of the Old Rhodesia for Subversive Lyrics and Fomenting Rebellion. He was the Hero of the Forces of Liberation who were to Go on and Win Freedom for the People of a New Country - Zimbabwe. Since 1979 He Has Been the Single Biggest Star in that Country and is a True Man of the People. So it Has Been Especially Hard for Him to See the Problems that have Come About Over 25 Years of Mugabe's Rule - and this Being the Lion of Zimbabwe, There was No Way He was Going to Stay Quiet for Long. So Now, Once Again He Finds Himself on the Wrong Side of his Country's Government, his Records Banned, his Life in Danger. He Now Lives in Exile in the USA, but his Music is Still Totally, Uniquely, his Own - and Once Again is a Call to his People to Change...to "Rise Up".

WOW! THOMAS MAPFUMO POWER LIFE LOVE PEACE come share in the soulful african bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, atmospheric music meshed with politics.......2006-08-03

I first heard some of the songs from this album on the NPR program Afropop
Worldwide in the spring of 2005. 'Rise Up' has been available as a download from
the Calabash Music website since April 2005 (when I purchased it), but was only
released in CD form in July 2006.

It's a shame that it has taken so long for the rest of the world to learn about this
album, because for me this album is the fulfillment of a sound I had been seeking
for much of my life. I had long enjoyed the sinuous guitar lines that graced songs
like Paul Simon's 'Crazy Love, Vol. II' (Graceland) and '(Nothing But) Flowers' by the
Talking Heads (Naked), and wanted to find African music of the sort that had
inspired those melodies.

'Rise Up' , though released two decades after those songs, is everything I had
been looking for: rich guitar melodies, organ loops reminiscent of Marleyesque
Reggae, sweet vocal accompaniment by the backup singers, and Mapfumo's own
gruff, world-weary voice as it expresses dissatisfaction with what has happened to
his Zimbabwean homeland under the regime of Robert Mugabe (Mapfumo is living
in exile in the United States).

The guitar melodies, which first drew my attention, mimic those of the traditional
mbira thumb pianos of Mapfumo's Shona people. It's funny that music with such an
acerbic political message (just look at the song titles!) can simultaneously convey
images of lush tropical rain forests, cool waterfalls, and colorful tropical birds...
OK, maybe that's just my interpretation--buy this album and listen for yourself, for
it will take you to amazing places too.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Celebration: Kathleen Battle.......2007-01-19

what can i say about the best of the best? As always, Miss Battle makes me wonder how anyone else would dare to sing this music after her rendition. A beautiful CD

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22

I love Kathleen Battle's voice, and to get such a great collection of beautiful sacred music, it was like a dream come true. She sings many traditional carols like Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, which is possibly my favorite here, you may think you have heard this song so many times, but Kathleen's voice really shines in it. Her English diction is so incredible, you can understand every word, which is not something many opera singers can achieve. Her singing is always so natural and lovely. Many other songs are oustanding on this album, I love the two version of Ave Maria and the Italian song Gesu Bambino. If you are looking for a really beautiful collection of Christmas music, this album is a great choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13

If there is one performer I miss hearing on a regular basis, it is Kathleen Battle. Anytime I knew that she'd be in a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, I knew it would be a performance to remember and more often than not, I was correct. She has a light voice that reaches the upper reregisters with ease and has as a gorgeous sound. She not a regular at many opera houses these days, and in likelihood, if she still did perform on the world's opera stages, we'd be hearing critics say her voice was not what it once was, but thanks to her recorded legacy, her voice will, always have that youthful, energetic sound.

Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.

With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle, My Madam Christmas.......2004-12-28

I probably have 50 Christmas albums. I love many of them. This is my favorite. Leaves me astounded and breathless every time I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy.......2003-12-07

In a world where disturbing things are all too common, Christian scripture guides us to dwell on that which is lovely. Kathleen Battle's blessed voice is most certainly one of those lovely things.

I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.

The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.

Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.

This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.

5 out of 5 stars Malcolm X meets Bob Marley..........2007-07-07

or Patti Smith does Funkadelic.

There really is no adequate way to describe this latest incarnation of Azeem, who now teams up with mix-miester Zeph to form some of the most unique rap rhythms since Public Enemy introduced Coltrane and be-bop to the hip hop world...and the lyricism is the logical progression of the Gil Scott-Heron/PE school of MESSAGE RAP...and for those latter-day Rate-a-Record bandstanders---it's got a beat you can dance to.

The BEAT is heavily Caribbean at times, reminiscent of the founders of rap---those yard party DJs in Jamaica playing the dub side of the records while chanting over it---and for those of you who never got the chance to catch Run DMC doing block parties in Hollis or the Fugees at a street fair in Harlem, THIS ALBUM captures all that excitement of the NEXT BIG THANG in rap!!!

On Rise Up!, The Klezmatics once again expand the concept of klezmer music by fusing the radical and the traditional via edgy jazz musicianship, interesting arrangements of traditional Jewish folk songs and Eastern European rhythms, and myriad other imaginative influences. Created in response to the 9/11 attacks, the album is an often somber meditation of loss in songs about deathbed regrets, lost love, and the dangers of vanity and complacency. While the band is typically best known for its ecstatic moments of musical celebration, even the instrumentals here have a subdued tone to them. The album is more reaffirming on its two versions (one in English and one in Yiddish) of Holly Near's "I Ain't Afraid": the message is a powerful indictment on religious fanaticism set to an uplifting gospel arrangement. Even though they didn't write it, the song crystallizes the social and musical slant of The Klezmatics, a band with a message that preaches in its own unique style from its own very unique musical perspective. --Tad Hendrickson

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Featuring volatile and reverberating lyrics.......2003-07-26

Another collaborative effort of The Klezmatics, Rise Up! Shteyt Oyf! is an audio CD embracing the Yiddish tradition of Klezmer music, featuring volatile and reverberating lyrics, and showcasing samples from a 1948 Jewish archive, in honor of, and respect for, those who resisted Nazi destruction and murder during World War II. An enthusiastic celebration and reinventing of grand and quite distinctive musical tradition, Rise Up! Sheteyt Oyf! presents fifteen outstanding recordings and would make a welcome and appreciated addition to any personal music library.

4 out of 5 stars Moving klezmer for modern times.......2003-07-12

These veteran pioneers of the modern klezmer revival open their new album up with a mad, headlong rush into jazzy terrain, letting you know right off the bat that this ain't your grandfather's klezmer music, not by a longshot. Shifting effortlessly on "Kats Un Moyz (Cat And Mouse)" from free jazz into fusion, then to Miles Davis-style cool and salsa-inflected Latin dance riffs (all in the same song!), the Klezmatics start out with a dazzling musical display... This same inventive playfulness is in evidence throughout the rest of the album, although from then on they mainly stick to more standard-sounding Jewish musical themes. Still, playing a rubber squeek toy in the middle of a di-di-di Yiddish refrain ("Makht Oyf") and covering Holly Near's "I Ain't Afraid" shows an adventurous spirit that keeps this music from getting stale or static. Fans of the genre should be thrilled to hear the 'matics back in action, and their soulful social/political reflections (offered, in part, as a response to the chaos of September 11th, 2001...) will be as much salve for the soul as their much-welcome sense of humor. Recommended!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album!!.......2005-09-10

Rita Springer is one of my favorite singer and has a God given gift of leading people into worship. Her passionate lyrics and worship style make it easy to enter in. Her desire of reckless abandonment to the Lord shines through in her songs.
This album was recorded during 5 sessions of one of her "Fragrant Oil" conference in New Mexico. It captures the atmosphere of worship that her concerts and conferences cultivate. I have seen her live before and her style is very much influenced by her years with the Vineyard.
My favorite song on this album is "My Hero". Rita's spontaneous songs "Come All Ye Who Are Thirsty" And "Deep Calling Deep" are also very powerful.
This is a must have CD. Rita is lead by the Lord as she seeks to worship the Lord and when you are listening or worshiping with her you can't but help being brought along to the throne of grace.
