ALMOST A TRIBUTE TO BING.......2003-10-07
The DEAN MARTIN tv show is like DREAM WITH DEAN the singer at his intimate best, but with the added talent of arranger ERNIE FREEMAN, who creates beautiful musical settings with those ten songs.SONGS FROM THE SILENCERS is a filler album with 4 instrumentals that are enjoyable and 8 songs that figured in the movie. It was a clear case of the record producers coping with DEAN's great popularity in 1966.There are at least 4 songs on this overall collection that were recorded by BING CROSBY years before :SIDE BY SIDE,IF I HAD YOU,THE LAST ROUND UP and RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET.So,this is certainly worth getting if you are a MARTIN collector.
TV Show/ Silencers.......2003-04-18
The first album, the Dean Martin TV Show is a collection of ten songs that are enjoyable and laid back. Sip on a beverage and enjoy. Unfortunately the second album is a mish mash of four unlistenable instrumentals and eight so so songs. Why would a Dean Martin album have four instrumentals ? This is my least favorite of the set.
DINO'S COMBINATION OF SMALL SCREEN AND LARGE SCREEN HITS.......2002-04-10
Taking its cues from small screen to large, this combination of two Dean Martin albums prove to be ideally matched for this combined Collectors' Choice release, and reflect the great popularity he achieved in both forms. The Dean Martin Show
was prime-time viewing in the `60's and this set of songs recorded in 1966, simply feature a few of his favourites, with the orchestra headed by the renown Les Brown who also undertook orchestral duties on the television shows. Dean, in fantastic
vocal form, provides the ballads like JUST FRIENDS, IT'S THE TALK OF THE TOWN and BABY WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME? with a romantic sheen, so much his trademark throughout his career. The more swinging numbers benefit from great arrangements with S'POSIN' a highlight, followed closely by THE ONE I LOVE BELONGS TO SOMEBODY ELSE. I particularly liked I'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HER FACE which clearly expresses Dean's personable way with a good song and suitable arrangement. Altogether a triumphant combination of singer, good songs and suitable arrangements.
THE SILENCERS, a spoof on the James Bond phenomenon, surprisingly found its own box-office success in the `60's with three sequels equalling the box-office takings, no doubt partly due to Dean's laconic personality, Hollywood gloss, and the
current need for fluffy entertainment. Dean made the ideal Matt Helm, who with tongue firmly in cheek, managed his secret agent adventures without missing out on his luck with the ladies. I don't recall much about the films or the featured songs, but DEAN MARTIN SINGS SONGS FROM "THE SILENCERS" includes eight old favourites ready- made for Dean by being performed in the contemporary orchestral backings and busy chorus so much an ingredient of Dean's recordings by the mid-60's. So THE GLORY OF LOVE, EMPTY SADDLES and THE LAST ROUND-UP plus others receive up-front and busy versions, together with four orchestral tracks which include an updated ANNIVERSARY SONG. With RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET and THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET also included in the vocal mix, I imagine this album was and is a favourite of Dean's fans.

Wonderful Music.......2007-03-01
I first heard of the Silencers on NPR in the late 1980's and quickly purchased the 3 albums that were then available; Letter to St Paul, Blues for Buddha, and Dance to the Holy Man. To this day these discs have a treasured place in my collection. They have no "bad" tracks or filler material, it is all solid musical goodness. I do not understand why they did not become a huge success here, but do yourself a favor and pick up any or all of these that you can get your hands on.
extraordinary!.......2000-12-08
Like its predecessor, A Letter From St Paul, another phenominal exhibition by this band. I bought this album in 1989 and still listen to it this day. I also owned St Paul and Dance to the Holy Man--they disappeared from my collection long ago, but to my dismay I cannot find them anywhere any longer. It's regrettable they are/were not bigger. The world should be their oyster.
Breath-taking.......2000-08-01
one of my top ten of all time. try the only other Silencers album probably better than this: "Dance to the holy man". Breath-taking
Everybody here love this!...........2000-06-15
Wow!...what a music!. when I started playing this CD of SILENCERS in our office, the deafening silence suddenly broke-off; somebody just got tapping his toes and his hands with the beat and just got louder and louder, others are whispering trying to follow the rhytm others are body shakin' while seated. I was amazed when everyone asked me to run them a copy of this specially the Real McCoy music.

An Impressive Debut.......2004-12-03
The Silencers are a great, yet relatively unknown pop/rock band from Scotland. Their debut album, "A Letter From St. Paul" made a bit of a splash, with the minor hits "Painted Moon" and "I See Red," but for some reason they never caught on. Their sound is similar to their Scottish peers of the time, such as the Simple Minds and Big Country, though they don't necessarily sound like either one. The Silencers have subdued yet driving sound that sticks with you once you've heard it.
Other standout songs are "God's Gift" and the title track, a trippy "instrumental" with an American girl (from St. Paul?) reading a "letter." The whole album is an excellent example of late 80's pop/rock. This is a really good overlooked gem. It's a shame the CD is out of print.

Product Description
Tuff Jeff Salen is back with a new release that further extends his varied approach to rock and pop. Working with a set band, ""The Silencers,"" Salen stretches out and allows Chuck Hancock, the group's saxophonist to handle the more rough vocals on the disc. Salen also mines his Tuff Darts catalog for an updated remake of ""(You're Love Is Like A) Nuclear Waste,"" a punk rock classic. Fellow Darts John DeSalvo (bass) and Jim Morrison (drums) also join in the festivities on a few tracks. But mostly, this is Tuff Jeff doing what he does best, writing and playing rock and roll with verve, humor and chops.

Tuff Jeff Salen & Johnny Black keep NYs Underground alive!.......2007-06-10
Tuff Jeff Salen is back to form on "Love and Trouble" originally from The Tuff Darts self titled Classic PUNK album. Songs like "Boy Chases a Girl" written by Jeff and sung by Jeff & The Band, "Down to the Edge of Town' written by Black & Salen,(sung by Black)& Hancock's "Just Ask Me" echo New York's Punk Underground at it's height--A time when The New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders and The Ramones used to share the stage with Jeff's first band The Tuff Darts. An instant classic by Pioneers from CBGBs Jeff Salen, Johnny Black & Chuck Hancock. Call your radio station. Buy it! Make it a hit!

Surf Punk Spectacular !!!.......2004-09-30
Deleware guitar, bass & drums trio play wild instrumental music dominated by the supremo surf guitarist Eric Toth. Titles hit all the genres from hot rod to lounge to space. Some drippy tremelo guitar on "Martini Lunch" while it's all chunka-chunka reverb surf pickin' & glissandos on "Bleach Pit", "Drag Queen" and "Mr. Transmogrifier." Rumblin' bass & drums accompany Eric's Link Wray-like guitar attack on "In From The Cold" while "Rough Rider" blends just right amounts of spaghetti-Western twang and surf guitar. Finally, the outta space vibrato guitar sounds of "Spaceman" has gotta be heard to be believed!
Amazon editor is WRONG.......2004-09-25
This is not the Silencers featuring Jimme O'Neil. Don't be confused - this is some punk band with the same name and holds no candle to the magic behind the Silencers. Don't buy this - go buy a Blues for Buddah by the Silencers instead. And to the Amazon reviewer dude - uh, did you even listen to this album?
Sheesh

If you appreciate the silencers then dont buy this unless you have unlimited cash, and spend like a fool, its poor writing poor engineering silly sounds childish actually,..production makes this a fans only kind of release. The endorsement to buddism is borning and oversells just like recieving did, Jimmy your old and lazy,.. How this can be considered Celtic is streatching pretty far,..the silencers wasnt eeven mentioned this month in the poles for top 100 Scottish bands.. what does that tell you!. if you want a great silencers cd get anything else but Recieving or Come. Very disapointed,.. I will sell mine for what ever i can get for it.
