I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
The Kink's CDs really put a person in a 'State of Confusion'. I have yet to find a CD collection with all of the Kink-essential songs on it. This CD is bad because it doesn't have all of the essential songs, AND to top it off two of the songs are LIVE versions. What a rip off!
The essential songs are: Come Dancing, Catch Me Now I'm Falling, Lola, You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, Destroyer, and Around the Dial (if I'm missing any, please let me know).
So, you have to pay $14 to buy the CD on Amazon, but you are only getting $3 worth of original, great songs (Come Dancing, Catch Me Now I'm Falling and Destroyer). You can buy the songs Destroyer, Around the Dial and Catch Me Now I'm Falling for $1 each on iTunes. (Unfortunately, iTunes and Rhapsody don't currently sell the other essential songs I've listed.)
Ray Davies is really making it hard for us to get all of his best songs in one place, but by doing so, I'm sure he's making a heap of money from us all.

Don't Forget to Dance.......2007-03-16

When I was in high school, I loved the hard-edged sound of the Kinks, the Who, etc. Much later, the Don't Forget to Dance video really touched me for some reason.

I noticed that most Kinks collection lack this masterpiece. Now, it is my all-time favorite Kinks song. Although I still love the more hard-edged songs by them and Lola which defies description, I plan to buy this collection to have Don't Forget to Dance along with many other fine songs.

I had forgotten just how much fun the Kinks were, then I purchased the CD for the song Come Dancing and had no idea that I would know all the other songs on the CD. My 14-18 year old art students pick this CD over rap and current artists to listen to whiile creating art works. It is just plain old fun!

The 70's-80's Kink era was considered the weaker material but when you listen to this compilation, they still put out lots of quality material.

Their sound and approach changed a bit, they obviously went more commercial, and they lacked some of their original identity yet these are still great songs. 30 years later, this was not a weak era and they put out a lot more good stuff then most other bands.

Rock and Roll fantasy, Detroyer, Celluloid Heroes, Don't forger to dance, Superman are all killer songs.

I would like to see one day when they get a boxed set w/You Really Got me era, Lola era and their hard rocking Destroyer era.

It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10

This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).

The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.

Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.

I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.

If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."

If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.

I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.

I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.

Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..

I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour

but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..

An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17

Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.

In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.

Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.

I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.

This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

Great music.......2007-04-05

The pipes, like a few other things, are something you either love or hate. If you are not a Scot, they may sound like someone is scalding cats. If you are Scot, or even partly so, they will make your blood boil. This album certanily does that. It has a mix of traditional and more upbeat music. The traditional "Amazing Grace" is fantastic and the last selection is an upbeat Caribbean rendition that is great.

Not just pipes.......2007-02-12

I purchased this CD looking for bagpipe tracks to listen to. The recording of Amazing Grace is flawless, and inspiring. However - much of this CD is the entire band playing more modern music (of course this album was recorded in the 70's). The pipe playing is excellent, but this is not really a bagpipe CD.

Finally Found It!!.......2005-08-03

I have been searching for a CD of this recording for ages! In 1971, when it was originally released, I was 10 years old and couldn't appreciate the album that my brother played endlessly. As I got older I started to miss it. I found a cassette copy several years ago, but am afraid to use it anymore for fear of it breaking. My brother told me he had found a copy of the CD at his local Borders, and since I don't have one in my neighborhood I checked good old Amazon!! I have just ordered and I am looking forward to receiving it. I'm not a music critic, but after hearing many pipe and drum recordings, this has got to be the best I've ever heard.

A thousand horse cavalry charge!.......2005-06-11

I judge bagpipes by Scotland the Brave. This is magnificant; like a thousand horse cavalry charge. The only problem is that, at 45 seconds, it is too short.

It would have been far better if it had been played once on pipes alone and then again with the brass dropped in behind the pipes. A thousand highlanders screaming across the battlefield, followed by the thousand horse cavalry charge. Just thinking about it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand and my blood pressure go through the roof.

This album is magnificent, but it could have been awesome.

Updated Amazing Grace.......2003-05-09

Having reviewed the original "Amazing Grace" recording by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from 1971 it seems that Amazon.com now offers a series of recordings that the bands released in the late 70 and 1980s under the same title. The first half of this CD contains tracks from a 1976 release of the bands entitled "The Lengendary Amazing Grace" In addition to a fine updated version of the now famous tune four years after its original world wide hit, this part of the CD contains some interesting selections for band and pipes. "Una Palma Blanca" is a true example of how the RSDG bands went to great lengths to explore the full combined sound. The regimental band supports the pipes with a variety of modern sounds including an electronic bass guitar which many military bands in fact use for concert purposes today providing as it does a useful Continuo bass line for a military band. "Theme in Glory" and "Turn on the Sun" are additional examples of just how good the RSDG bands had mastered the concept of combing their resources. These are truly exciting pieces to listen too. The regimental band shows its stuff with "Rockout" an arrangement of classic old rock music themes. The pipes and drums provide three medleys and are simply surperb. One can hear that a distinctive change had taken place in the ensemble sound of the pipe band since 1971. The RSDG drummers have incorporated the use of their tenor drums to creat an amazing drummers' accompaniment to the pipes. This innovation would become standard in the piping world, but it owes its origins largely to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards pipes and drums. Listen to how magificent the pipe band sounds when they first enter to the 6/8 medley starting with "Macneils of Ugdale". You won't find a better sound even today. The Retreat medley starting with "Lochanside" is also amazing. Its worth getting the CD just for those tracks as well as the others. Perhaps the most haunting combined tune is an arrangment of Handel's "Largo" with the solo pipes doubling for the voice parts. Truly beautiful and moving.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

Back in the '70s, the rapid development of synthesizers and electronic keyboards had a huge impact on popular music, with Isao Tomita among the leading exponents of multimedia, surround-sound events associated in Western Europe with such very different musicians as Rick Wakeman and Jean-Michel Jarre. The present disc has less grandiose aims, being a well-balanced selection of, to quote the original liner notes, "Virtuoso electronic performances of Debussy's beautiful tone paintings." It's easy to scoff at the concept behind Tomita's approach--take some of the most poetic music around and give it the consistency of aural cotton wool--yet there's no denying the skill with which he translates Debussy's soundworld, preserving the harmonic interest of the piano originals and bringing out many subtleties of texture. Inevitably the slower numbers come off best--"Clair de Lune" or "Reverie" could easily become chill-out favorites. "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," however, is not so much a travesty as a vaporization of the orchestral masterpiece. A mixed bag, but with enough musical interest to make Tomita's "sound clouds" of more than just curiosity value. --Richard Whitehouse

Another great electronic adaptation of classical music by Isao Tomita.......2007-06-02

Released in 1974, this all electronic adaptation of works by Claude Debussy is really quite good and showcases Isao Tomita and his flair for synthesizer wizardry. I think that Isao more or less captures the dreamy and haunting mood of Debussy's compositions and also adds a bit of his own (humorous) flair here and there with some "light-hearted" synth sounds.

The music on this album was recorded entirely with a moog synthesizer although the sweeping and majestic sound of a mellotron with string setting pokes through the mix on occasion. As a big synthesizer fan, I thought it was interesting that the various settings on the moog were listed as "equipment" including things like oscillators and lowpass filters etc. This particular synthesizer was pretty versatile and a virtually infinite number of sounds could be generated, as is amply demonstrated by Isao on this album.

In addition to the works originally included on Snowflakes are Dancing, the last track was taken from his Firebird album (1976) and is another work composed largely on the moog synthesizer although other keyboards were used including a Fender electric piano and a Hohner Clavinet C.

The sound of this high performance CD is excellent and trust me, the changes in dynamics virtually leap out at you.

All in all, this is an excellent recording of electronic music by an excellent electronic composer. Highly recommended along with his 1976 adaptation of The Planets (by Gustav Holst).

Synthesizers are Dancing.......2007-03-28

During the seventies, the prog music of Yes, (early) Genesis, Renaissance, and especially Emerson, Lake & Palmer cast a hypnotic spell over legions of high school nurds such as myself. Much of what held it together was a fascination with the sounds eminating from the still somewhat new Moog Synthesizer. It wasn't long before my high school art room pals & myself began looking for anything Moog, and found quite a bit outside the rock music pantheon, most notably the 'Switched On Bach' recordings of Walter/Wendy Carlos. They were interesting, but nothing quite prepared us for the release of Tomita's 'Snowflakes Are Dancing'. Perhaps it was because the timing coincided with a 'high' point in our collective psyhedelic experimentations.... Debussy's music is already an alternative, ethereal experience in the classical world, and Tomita's choice of sounds & production techniques put this recording in a class by itself (umm... especially with a pair of good headphones). I am happy to report that, upon listening to this well produced CD release with nothing more than a cup of herbal tea, I was happily transported once again. It is one delightfully Bizarre recording. 'Highly' recommended.

A seminal work that stands the test of time.......2006-08-03

Tomita was one of the early pioneers of electronic music. This CD, originally released in the 70's, was at the time a masterpiece. That was in the days of patch cords and laborious manual over dubbing, so not every cut is up to today's standars. Still, the finer pieces on this CD stand with anything ever done in the genre: luminous, melodic, and even entrancing. At its best, a magical CD highly recommended not only for the connoisseur, but for anyone who enjoys synthesized music.

Their second full-length album, Fancy Ultra•Fresh, builds upon the minimal electropop of their past releases, with an edgier, fuller sound. With songs ranging from the aggressively dancey "Parlez-Vous Freezepop?" to the hushed "Outer Space," to the cheeky and blippy "Stakeout," Freezepop have introduced new sonic elements to their repertoire, while remaining true to their catchy synthpop roots. Fancy Ultra•Fresh, which also includes video and interactive multimedia content, will be released by the Archenemy Record Company on May 18. Formed in 1999, Freezepop is the union of Liz Enthusiasm vocalist/fashion plate), the Duke of Pannekoeken (programmer extraordinaire), and the Other Sean T. Drinkwater (synths/vocoder/wacky hijinks). All the Freezepop songs are programmed on a Yamaha QY-70, a handheld battery - powered sequencer. Their debut album, Freezepop Forever, was released domestically by Archenemy in 2001, and was licensed for worldwide release by Elefant, a Spanish indiepop label. The band have also released several EPs of new material as well as remixes by the Future Bible Heroes, Soviet, Stephan Groth (Apop/Fairlight Children), and more. Freezepop have songs featured in four Sony PlayStation2 video games, including araoke Revolution, Frequency, and A mplitude.

Freezepop: Fancy Ultra-Fresh (Archenemy, 2004).......2006-01-07

Following in the footsteps of Human League, Ladytron, and Kraftwerk, Freezepop is a blend of fanciful, energetic dance pop mixed with songs that are more on the serious side. About half the songs on this album are fun filled tunes, while the other half are darker, more intricate pieces. In fact, I find this disc to be kind of schizophrenic, but, in many ways, I like it because it is so two sided. The band consists of front lady Liz Enthusiasm, the Duke of Pannekoeken, and the other Sean T. Drinkwater. Yes, probably not their real names, but their names seem to fit the playfulness of their songs. Also, I am always fascinated with electronic bands that become attached to one sequencer or keyboard and stick with it, trying to make it do what they want. Freezepop programs all their songs on a Yamaha QY-70 to great effect.

Fancy Ultra-Fresh begins with a tongue-and-cheek stalker song called "Stakeout". Liz states in here monotone voice over pulsing drums that she likes the boy who works in the indie-record store. Included on the disc is a video of the song. It's a catchy tune that will have you dancing in your living room. It's a fast tempo song that reminds me of an electronic version of Marine Research or Heavenly. "Bike Thief" comes next. After the first two songs, the listener begins to get the impression that Freezepop is into crime or some sort of mental disturbance. No worries though, the album does change after the Kleptomaniac song "Bike Thief" and the stalker song "Stakeout." "Bike Theif" is more of an industrial song with distorted vocals at points. It has a robotic chorus and the appearance of those Marine Research style vocals make an appearance as well. "I am not Your Gameboy" begins and ends with a sample from many people's childhood memories: Speak and Spell. This is Liz's theme to the boys about her being a human being and not a plaything.

"Parlez-Vous Freezepop" displays one of Liz's other talents: French. The French syllabification works great on this song with the electronic music. This is a medium-tempo song that is up-beat, but, frankly, I couldn't tell you what she is saying. "Outer Space" is probably one of my favorite songs on the disc. This is a more atmospheric song with spacey keys and simple drums. It's a song about solitude and is definitely their strongest showing on the disc. "Duct Tape My Heart" is a playful, yet serious song about Liz's feelings. This is typical love song, but it does fall into the darker side of their disc, which I like. "Manipulate (Mastermind Mix)" really reminds me of a cross between Ladytron and the Human League. The song structure of this song, "Duct Tape" and "Outer Space" are fantastic. I hope to see a darker album along this line in the future. "Emotions and Photons" is also a great song that recalls all the good things about 80's electronic pop.

All in all, this disc is solid. The production is stellar and the songs are strong contributions to the genre. If you love to dance or love bands like Ladytron, this certainly is a band for you. Give Freezepop a try and you will be in for a tasty treat.

I'm so sorry I bought this........2005-12-02

STOP!! Before you go and spend your well-earned money, think twice. Freezepop is funny, bubbley, and sort-of catchy at first, but trust me, it gets old very quickly. I bought it used for something like 5 or 6 bucks and I still lament the purchase. I don't even like seeing it while flipping through my cd book. What a piece of trash.

It's New Age music the right way.......2007-03-10

Put the CD in and close your eyes and be prepared for a journey. It's very evocative of emotions of love and romance. Absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere is one of closeness... perfect for a backdrop of a romantic evening or to put in headphones during a stressful day.

The reason I stumbled onto it (released in 1988 and bought by me in 2007) is the background singer Patti Austin. Anything Patti is in I buy.

I have heard of Andreas Vollenweider from the smooth jazz stations but never paid him any special attention. I have been missing out for many years. I'm sure I'm in the dark about many artists and am grateful that Amazon and other sites have the listen feature.

Will add more later. Still listening.

The action in this tale about the 18th century adventurer and (at least in popular lore) seducer is set in Cassanova's native Venice in the mid-1700s, so it makes sense that the soundtrack would be loaded with Baroque pieces. The Venice-based Tomaso Albinoni is featured prominentaly, along with heavyweights such as Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Rameau, and George Frideric Handel, and lesser-known composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Durante, and Alexandre Desplat. Er, actually Desplat is a contemporary French film composer who also released his score for the couldn't-be-more-different Syriana shortly after Casanova came out. Of the two pieces he penned here, "A Venetian Virgin" is in pure Baroque style, while "Inquisitor Pucci" betrays a more modern film-music vibe. Meanwhile, orchestrator Sonny Kompanek rearranged a couple of the tracks and authored the tense "The Plume's Nom Is Casanova," which doesn't sound embarrassing sandwiched between pieces by Albinoni and Handel. Overall, it would have been nice to get longer excerpts from the pieces--many feel chopped into too-small fragments--but the music's innate grace and elegance can't be beat for a period film. Or for any film, really: Vivaldi's Concerto in C Major ("The Doge's Decree") will be familiar to buffs, who will remember it featuring prominently in the Dustin Hoffman-¬Meryl Streep showdown Kramer vs. Kramer back in 1979. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Sheer Beauty for the Ears.......2006-07-25

For those that purchased this CD, I need not get into how masterfully infectious the movie was. After the first viewing, I found it charming, but after the second, I was hooked by the witty, clever story holding fun twists all along the way. So while I could go on and on about the movie and all of its wonderful aspects, the score was simply priceless. Apt in every scene, and all done with incredible baroque music that I had never had the opportunity of hearing before the film.

The disc walks you through the movie with no changes that I could tell from the original score. The only omission I found was that the song dubbed "Casanova's Theme" is played in much greater length in the closing credits, and that didn't seem to make it to the CD. Not a terrible loss.

Authenticity can sound great as well!.......2006-07-11

As an avid baroque music listener and performer, I can attest to the delightfully pleasing performances on the soundtrack as well as the painstakingly accurate performance practices utilized in the recording of this soundtrack.

The producers of this film fortunately went to the trouble of hiring some of the top period performance musician-specialists in the country (perhaps in the entire world) to record the soundtrack to Casanova. I know, because several of them were faculty members of the Oberlin Conservatory Baroque Performance Institute who went AWOL to Hollywood in June 2005 for the recording sessions. We all forgave them, and were actually quite excited that period music performance was having its day on the silver screen.

Do not miss this exquisite potpourri of wonderful baroque composers' works performed as closely as humanly possible to the way that they heard their works during their lifetimes! The film may not have been intended to be historically accurate (part of the fun), but the music certainly ended up that way. Not only that, but it sounds heavenly (unlike Casanova's antics) and up-to-date, not musty and old as if it were sealed in a museum case.

Lots of interesting baroque music unknown to me and
put together in dramatic sequences that add zest and
class to the listening experience. Also wonderful to
play in auto while driving thru boring country or in
slow moving traffic!
This CD will get a lot of play from me.

Wonderful relaxing music........2006-02-25

Saw the movie and had to have the soundtrack. Great music to relax by. When you need to get away from the cares of the day the classics can't be beat. The producers of this movie certainly chose wonderful music to accompany it.

I want to like it, but it's just not that good........2006-05-21

OK, I'm a fan of Hypocrisy and have a lot of respect for Mr Tagtgren, but I must admit I haven't managed to get into Pain, his industrial side project. There are always 1 or 2 great tracks that I like, but in general the albums just don't do it for me. I consider myself to be fairly open-minded when it comes to metal and am perfectly happy with attempts at cross-genre entities, but I do consider Pain to be a blatant attempt at commercialisation. Mixing the metal riffs, industrial dance-like beats with sing along choruses just stinks of someone trying to make a buck. But then Pain are releasing some fairly convincing material that one can't help feel will actually be successful amongst many crowds.

The confusing thing about "Dancing With the Dead" is the variety and incoherent style that could possibly turn off potential non-metal fans. One minute, there's a track like "Same Old Song" that oozes night club potential and makes me think Mr Tagtgren has nailed it. But then there are tracks such as "Bye/Die" which will be far too in-your-face for the type of listener that may have got into the former. I can't help feeling that he's not quite sure what he wants to achieve out of this release. It's kind of a catch 22 situation I guess, since he has so many different categories of fans to please. Hypocrisy fans will always check his work out and enjoy the heavier side (such as "Good Day to Die" my personal favourite), but then other fans are looking for the more poppy output. So he's kind of damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

The production is perfect, as if we'd expect anything less. Peter's vocals have improved and the guitar sound is fine (just too much chugging for my liking). The beats are not overpowering but have enough crunch to get the point across.
Looking at this particular Pain album, I think it is his best release so far. Once again, I don't enjoy all of it, and in fact some of it really doesn't agree with me at all. But there are many more convincing tracks present than on previous outings, so I'm willing to accept it as a decent album and recommend it to industrial metal fans.

He's getting closer to releasing something groundbreaking that no-one can ignore, but I don't think he's quite there yet.

personally i loved this album but it lacked the ferocity of "Rebirth" and "Nothing remains the same". Peter seems to be writing the same songs over and over(bye/die, shut your mouth). personally i love his style but some of his lyrics are a bit old and worn out, but if a fast kick-ass rock/metal album is what you're looking for in the same category of rammstein or atrocity than look no further than "dancing with dead" but if you seek balls-to-wall lyrically taut death metal than i suggest you keep looking or try

While the shipping response and everything was respectable, I was disappointed to find that the CD inserts were blurry, and after comparing them to my friend's official copy of the album, I am 90% sure that this was a bootleg CD.

Goosebumps!.......2005-03-22

Goosebumps! That is what I got after listening to the new album of Pain. The project of mastermind Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy) unleashes an album upon the world, which is just of supreme quality. The disc is baptized 'Dancing With The Dead' and works on me like a stroll through a painting of Jeroen Bosch. Each step is another surprise.

As you probably know Peter had a stroke a little while ago and was even a couple of moments not with us anymore. This must have had a major impact on him, because on 'Dancing With The Dead' he sounds more inspired than ever. The album opens with a direct hit in the crown jewels with 'Don't Count Me Out'. You can hear Tägtgren tell off everybody who wrote him off after the above-mentioned incident. After that the first single 'Same Old Song' is up. Although this song was not written for this album but as theme for a Swedish TV show (but rejected), this is the first highlight of the album. A catchy guitar riff and a bombastic orchestral sound form the fundament. By adding the unique vocals of Tägtgren and some folk elements the whole becomes very compelling. This could well become a mega hit in the alternative club scene. Through outstanding tracks like 'Nothing', the NIN-like 'The Tables Have Turned' and 'Not Afraid To Die' the title track 'Dancing With The Dead' takes the stage. The very autobiographical track is filled to the brim with emotion. "Too much is never enough!" Tägtgren screams and due to the rugged riffs and the light-footed chamber orchestra the whole atmosphere becomes pretty doomy/ goth rock like. Thus becoming another track that stays with you for days. With 'My Misery' Pain goes of in a different direction rhythm wise and when 'Bye/ Die' sets in, it almost seems to be space rock in the vanes of Monster Magnet that is flung into the room. But with 'A Good Day To Die' Tägtgren makes clear that he is the same guy who is in Hypocrisy. All systems are go and a rock/ death metal hybrid steamrolls out of my stereo system. The job is finished in style by the band with the Prong-esque 'Stay Away' and the (also rejected) soundtrack song 'The Third Wave'. All that is left are goose bumps and hitting the play button again.

'Dancing With The Dead' is everything but a mediocre album. All kinds of styles are blended into a harmonic whole, which makes it more than the sum of all different parts. Although the true metal extremists probably will dislike this disc, those amongst you who love Pain and some off road crossover to other genres must run to the record store and check this thing out.
