The English-language Oral Fixation Vol. 2 finds Shakira reclaiming some of the bite she showcased on 1998's smashing Donde Estan Los Ladrones? The Colombian rock goddess is making up for lost time: this is her second disc of new material in 2005. It's quite a feat, considering the four-year gap since Laundry Service, her scattershot, English-language debut album. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is more mature and better focused than the spin-cycle pop of that 2001 disc. Kick-off track "How Do You Do" starts with a haunting reading of "The Lord's Prayer" before launching into a risky questioning of faith and religion. Shakira touches on the highs and lows of celebrity on a trio of tracks--the bittersweet "Your Embrace," the guitar-driven "Costume Makes the Clown," and the disco-fied, politically charged "Timor." Selfish men and failed relationships--two oft-mentioned topics of interest--anchor much of Oral Fixation Vol. 2. First single "Don't Bother" is a bitter ode to strength, jealousy, and survival; "Dreams for Plans" is a wistful collage of relationship memories; and Carlos Santana slides a sexy guitar riff under soulful standout track "Illegal." The purple haze of Prince hangs over "Animal City," one of the disc's most inventive moments. It's a free-wheeling melange of rock riffs, electronic accents, mariachi horns and confident vocals. Two songs from Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 make appearances--the somber "Something" and "The Day and the Time," which improves greatly upon its Spanish counterpart. Vol. 1, while at times enjoyable, was a portrait of a gifted artist struggling to keep her footing and retain her confidence. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 finds Shakira embracing the eclectic beauty within. It's a wonderful sound. --Joey Guerra
Customer Reviews:
Volume 1 gets the prize........2007-07-06
I like Shakira's music most of the time. Even tough I have her whole cd collection (the ones that you can find in stores because her first and second are impossible find). Not all were for me good. "PIES DESCALZOS" next with "FIJACION ORAL Vol.1" are the best.
In 2005 after being tired of hearing her ALL THE TIME on radio or TV I bought "Fijacion ORAL Vol.1" and I must say that I was impressed, the cd was really, really good, so of course when the second volume was released I bought it without hesitation but this time I wasn't very thrilled and I think that also the public had the same feeling for the cd as I did. The cd debuted on Billboard's Top 200 albums at #5 where it peakd and flopped very fast in almost every music chart. The first single "DON'T BOTHER" was good but nothing special and didn't make either an impression (Top 50 on Billboard's Hot 100). From my point of view the best songs on the original version were "HOW DO YOU DO" a very strong song that sounds very good along with "ANIMAL CITY", the English version next to Cerati of "DIA ESPECIAL/DAY AND THE TIME" from the Spanish cd and finally the biggest track for me, "ILLEGAL" featuring Santana on lead guitar. In overall the cd sounds weak and maybe Shakira or her record company noticed that and along with the poor selling they decided to re-release the album with a new song that made the album see brightness for a brief moment with the mega hit "HIPS DON'T LIE" one of the biggest singles of 2006 but that wasn't enough to keep the album from falling again to the darkness. The third single "ILLEGAL" went nowhere and that's a pity beacuse of the great track it is but I think that the reason why it didn't hit was because even tough Shakira has a great voice, that doesn't mean that you don't get tired of listening it and "HIPS DON'T LIE" was good for her but it also made people tired of her voice. Maybe this happends to me beacuse I live in a country that speaks Spanish and I've been listening to her music non-stop ever sience "LA TORTURA" which is a very good song and I believe that it's going to be a classic.
Anyway, I think that the album is not that good really, just a couple of songs are good. If you speak Spanish I would recommend "FIJACION ORAL Vol.1" or "PIES DESCALZOS".
The best album of the year .......2007-06-21
Shakira transcends her beauty to make fantastic music. I like classic rock and I love this album. Every song is terrific. Buy it today
Not as good as expected.......2007-04-11
Would not recommend this CD. Some of the music is really horrible.
If you don't feel the urge to dance.......2007-04-07
I would be shocked if you didn't feel the urge to dance and sing. Only ever heard "Hips don't lie" before buying this. Glad I did. Love the whole thing. She has a big full voice that makes you want to sing.

For having waited 5 years for a CD to come out I think she did a good job, but nothing really blew my mind other than La Tortura, No, and Hips Don't Lie. I'm glad que yo espere antes de comprar los dos Cds individualmente because the deluxe edition comes with all the songs plus a bonus DVD with all the videos for the two albums except La Pared and Illegal.
The best...EVER.......2007-03-27
If your reading this then you are obviously contemplating whether or not to buy this Item.. DO IT. It has both of her great CD's and I'm sure everyone else that wrote a review talks about the music..
SO I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE DVD. The DVD is a must have for Shaki fans, It has so many great videos and for real fans... they gotta get it. It sucks watching your old VHS recordings off of fuse doesn't it? NOW you can have it DVD quality.. IT's the greatest. VERY GOOD DVD... The La tortura video is great kicks off the DVD.. FROM THERE ON IT's just amazing until the end! Her live performances are the best she has ever done.
I'm done with my bad review lol.
Excellent !!.......2007-03-26
It's an excellent edition !!! The quality of the DVD is very good....
ORAL FIXATION 1&2.......2007-03-22
SHAKIRA IS GREAT. WE HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO HER AND ENJOYING HER SONGS SINCE SHE WAS 15. WE LIKE BOTH THE SPANISH AND ENGLISH CDs. AND IT WAS A GREAT PRICE. THE VIDEOS WERE A NICE BONUS.
Shakira has become a master at her craft........2007-02-21
This beautiful lady has done it again. With her talent and her voice, she has my vote. With the exception of only two songs, I love every song she wrote, and this is unusual for me to like that many on two albums. Of course the DVD brings out her mastery in the art of the visual. To see her is to love her!

It's thrilling--in any language--to hear new music from Colombian superstar Shakira. And it's been a long time coming. Shakira's English crossover opus, Laundry Service, was released in 2001. The Spanish Donde Estan Los Ladrones came three years before that. Fijacion Oral, Volumen 1 is the first of two new discs; an English counterpart is due in November. Shakira's bleating, biting voice is in fine form, and it gives the material an electric urgency. She's girlish and innocent during the glittering "Dia de Enero" and sensual and seductive amid the thundering beats of "Lo Imprescindible." A talented stable of producers, including former Soda Stereo vocalist Gustavo Cerati, has swathed Shakira in rhythm-based arrangements. But the album's best moments come when Shakira channels her inner--and innate--rock goddess. "La Tortura" is a hurts-so-good break-up duet with Alejandro Sanz, and "Escondite Ingles" rides a beach-party guitar groove. --Joey Guerra

Love Shakira and love her native tongue! The music speaks to your soul!
This is so much better than Volume 2 (en inglés).......2006-11-27
Stick to singing in Spanish, Shak!
Eh...............2006-11-11
I have to say that after I heard international No. 1 "La Tortura" I just had to go out and purchase Fijacion Oral to see how amazing it is. Shakira's trademark bleat is in fine form here--unfortunately "La Tortura" is really the only track that has hit potential. Fijacion Oral is a consistent release but nothing remotely approaches that catchy lead single. Some songs get pretty close, though, like the rock-oriented "La Pared," disco-infused "Las De La Intuicion," the sweet "Dia De Enero" and the thundering "Lo Imprescindible." Despite its obvious flaws Shakira's signature sound pulls the bland material through well enough that you'll find yourself enjoying Fijacion in its entirety.

Customer Reviews:
I didn't develop a 'Fixation' for this album.............2007-06-30
I had to listen to ORAL FIXATION VOLUME 2 [after hearing Fijacion Oral Vol. 1] to understand what all the hype was about, for this latest piece by Shakira, and to find out whether it was merited. What is my verdict? In all honesty, a lot of the material here left me cold. Though, I won't deny that Baranquilla-born Colombian superstar extraordinaire Shakira Mebarek is a truly multi-talented vocalist, musician, songwriter, philanthropist and alluring bellydancer, this album felt more like filler than substance. I was looking forward to seeing how she would fare on her second English language album (the first being LAUNDRY SERVICE in 2001).
This 2005 release catches our attention with quite an eyeful of Shakira on the cover. In fact, the cover art [Shakira in a quasi-Eve pose with forbidden fruit in hand, her chest area barely covered by the branch of the Tree of Knowledge] was generously altered in more fundamentalist nations, prior to the album's release, to conceal her bare midriff. The music also takes an intimate look at Shakira's life, through a study of the anatomy of broken relationships, evident in her lyrics. Many of the songs are bitter in nature. The first song, "How Do You Do," examines Shakira's broken relationship with God, specifically. The lyrics raised eyebrows and generated discussion regarding her [sometimes sacrireligious] view of organized faith practices. The music and accompanying lyrics are grizzly and pointed. Shaki even opens the song with excerpts from "The Lord's Prayer," in English and Latin, and goes on to sing in Hebrew and Arabic. Many of the other songs lean more toward her setbacks in romantic love, and the musical styles run the range from pop/rock to disco. ("Don't Bother" and "The Day and the Time," as examples) Another controversial song here is "Timor," which closes the set of eleven tunes. Shakira shamelessly calls the media to task, as well as society's apathetic "out of sight, out of mind" attitude toward the victims of third world country violence and social injustice. Actually, that is the one track I really connected with. I love the instrumental on this one, as well as the choral accompaniment. It's just a shame that this last song didn't set the standard for most of the other tracks on the album. Then, I would've given this at least four stars. Give it a listen and draw your own opinions. Far be it for me to call a "yay" or "nay" on this one, so, I will just say that Shakira's latest effort was "middle of the road."
Shakira Is Terrible.......2007-04-18
I think Shakira sucks a lot. She can't sing. I don't understand her musical appeal.
Nice songs, and thankgoodness for the written lyrics!!.......2007-02-02
I'm only giving her 4 stars because her accent was just too much!! And I hear the same comments from non-spanish speakers who couldn't understand her "Don't bother" song. So, I had to read the lyrics, because otherwise, I wouldn't know what on earth she was singing about.
Once I passed this phase, I really enjoyed her songs. It's true, there weren't many songs that I thought were great, but not one of them was bad. I love this girl, and, personally, they were all decent.
Songs you must have:
Dreams for plans, Illegal, the Day and the Time, Your Embrace, and Something, oh.. and maybe How do you Do.
The others were too pop for my taste and I don't recommend them.
However, if your are a true fan, you must buy this CD!!
Gift.......2007-01-09
Its a CD! If you like the music its great, otherwise its not.
two differnt oral fixation vol 2.......2006-12-28
I really like this CD not as good as laundry service, but i still enjoyed most of the tracks. what my complaint is that hips don't lie is not on the first release. I feel cheated, I am not going out to buy a second CD just for a new song. I feel that the record company shouldn't add a song the re-release the cd. I notice some other bands are doing this as well, maybe thats why cd sells are dropping.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best Spanish albums in a very long time!.......2006-04-05
I've been a Shakira fan for many many years. My obsession started with Ojos Asi and from then it just kept getting bigger and bigger. I've never heard anyone that has been able to stop me dead in my tracks with just one sentence. And the best part is I barely speak a word of Spanish! True she isn't the Celine Dion of Latin music, but Shakira just has the thing about her that makes you want to listen even if you can't comprehend!
Having said all of that, I can't praise this album enough! I was so excited when it came out, and after I listened to it, I was even more engulfed in Shakira's world. It is lyrically and vocally beautiful. You can play it all the way through and you'll still go back to the beginning and do it again! All the songs are creative and unique but the best part is they have balance!
I also own it's predcessor, Oral Fixation 2 and I'm sorry but I could not have been more dissapointed with that album. To me it felt like American fans got screwed. I would have much rather she translated this entire album into English and marketed it to us, then what we orignally got! The only reason I say this, is because now we have to wait another three or four years for her next album to come out. True I'm pleased that I have this, but it would be nice to be able to sing along to the songs LOL!
Shakira's New CDs.......2006-03-19
Liked the diversity of her music; still impressed by how talented this young woman is. Not my favorite CD, but a good addition to the rotation.
Shakira fijacion oral vol. 1.......2006-02-22
I really like this cd. I enjoyed purchasing the item on this site and will probably continue to do so. I enjoy listening to this cd just about everyday.
Shakira is the Best.......2006-01-18
I've followed Shakira's music from her first album, way back when she started in Colombia. I totally love her music. Her breakthrough into the American music industry was a spectacular hit... Laundry Service was a great album. But Fijacion Oral really shows her diversity. Shakira is very particular about all her music, and in almost everything she does she is a perfectionist. This album really displays her creativity, her willingness to experiment and her talent. I definitely recommend this album. She's really fantastic.
I love this album.......2005-12-19
I am a long time fan and I love this album. I think once you listen to it a few times you will love it too. I think you have to be a real fan to like it. My friends all say it is not good becasue it is pretty mellow compared to her past albums which is true but I look past that. There are a few fun track like the obvious, la tortura and my personal favorite las de la intuicion. I think this cd could have used a few extra faster tracks but from what i heard on volume 2 i do not think she wants to go in that direction. Over all it is a pretty good album to relax too. The DVD is very fun too, it shows how she is on a personal level through the eyes of her own video camera and an awesome video, la tortura.

Product Description
Surf Zydeco's 13 fun and creative tracks prove that California's coast is really not that far from the Louisiana Bayou. There is a strong presence of Zydeco here, thanks especially to Toronto native Kevin Gould's very funky accordion, which colors every track. The ten original songs bring a host of different styles into the gumbo. One can hear the influence of The Beach Boys, The Dead, Ricky Nelson and Los Lobos. "Till Death Do Us Part" has a definite jug band feel, whereas "Before the Sunrise" has a Tex-Mex flavor. Produced by Rick Chelew (T Bone Burnett, Pentangle, Bert Jansch). Instruments featured include accordion, fiddle, acoustic and electric guitars, dobro, mandolin, upright and electric bass, baritone ukelele, drums and an array of percussion including rubboard, triangle, gourd, conga, djembe, tambourine, chair, and hand claps. Find out what happens when Swamp meets Surf. Bon Ton Roulet, dude!

Rude, Crude, Lewd AND Hilarious.......2002-11-19
I first learned of this CD after reading a review several years ago in a San Diego alternative paper and just had to hear it myself. What a riot it is!
Those who think that "ho" and other disrespectful terms for women are new expressions in the seamier side of African-American culture are in for a big surprise. Here in these "toasts" are the roots of rap, with all of the macho posturing and blatant misogyny and sexism that goes with it.
If one can say, as the compilers of the CD imply, that saving these toasts for posterity is important, it is important because these toasts betray the knack of their authors for a very clever use of the language. One can disparage the crudity of the toasts, yet admire their construction. One can dislike the "music" of rap, but actually enjoy some of the raps themselves.
Not all of these toasts are sexist. The "Signifying Monkey" tells of an animal in a position of weakness using cunning and sweet talk to turn the tables on his physically more powerful adversary. Get In Out Of The Rain is a hilarious tale of a guy who drops in on a friend to escape the rain only to find himself in a place almost as bad.
My favorites are Pimpin' Sam and The Lame and the Whore. They are ROUGH, yet they are outrageously entertaining.
This is surely not a CD you'll want to buy for your girlfriend, your wife, your mother or your sister. But if you enjoy clever wordplay and can stomach something that is rude, crude, lewd AND hilarious, then this unusual compilation should find a home in your CD collection.
Black Nostalgia.......2000-09-29
This CD brought back memory of the toasts my dad used to recite. In some cases it provides insight into Black culture of a given time period. It's not for the easily offended, as the lyrics are quite explicit, but you can't beat it for the nostalgia connection.
reissue for LP accompanying book.......2000-05-15
This CD is the reissue of the LP that accompanied the book (an anthology of Toasts) of the same name by Bruce Jackson. It includes examples of some of the most classic Toasts...
How can I name the CD if you can't swear?.......1999-04-06
the precursor to today's gangsta (sp???) rap, which is reason alone to buy it. Oh and it's gonna be worth a lot of money someday.
