This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

This album claims to be the best of Bad Company, but it cannot be the `Best of' without Paul Rodgers, in fact Bad Company is not Bad Company without him. Make sure you read all the details of this album before making the purchase. I had to send it back!

A misnomer is what you're getting here. Paul Rodgers put the "Bad" in Bad Co. with his earthbound, grit-rimmed vocals and climactic lyrical ad-libbing, but once replaced (and I use that term VERY loosely) by pedestrian singer Brian Howe, their shooting star fizzled. This concert cash-in on hits old and new is also minus the rock-steady bottom of bassist Boz Burrell, but Rodgers is the key omission. Better to check out the recent live Bad Co. offering MERCHANTS OF FORTUNE, still featuring only half the original members, but at least one is ex-Free wailer Rodgers. On WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET, early Bad Co. classics FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE and ROCK 'N ROLL FANTASY still rule over latter day fluff HOW ABOUT THAT and NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE, demonstrating how their songwriting also suffered after Paul's exit. As far as classic rock is concerned, this lifeless concert attempt will put you in pretty bad company. RATING: TWO THUDS

If you're an original BadCo fan....yeah....then this is probably not for you, but please......Brain Howe made his own mark and if you can't appreciate that.....you're NO rock fan in anyway.....shape or form!! PERIOD! ......while this doesn't feature Paul Rodgers the rest of the lineup IS BadCO......and they do an excellent job of taking fans on the ride that they were on at that particulart time in thier career! Mick Ralphs sounds great and shows that he can change and stay afloat at a time when there really wasn't much by way of Classic Rockers out there! Simon Kirke is steady as well......so if you like live concerts and classic rock......then sip a few gin and tonics and appreciate this for what it is...classic rockers trying to give their fans some music and still make a living enjoying what God let them do the best while they go through life! Spread the music!

I bought this CD, listened to it once and threw it away. Brian Howe is no Paul Rodgers. The vocals are awful, only slightly better than the mastering. This CD is a travesty. If I could give it 0 stars I would.

By the time this CD was released,vocalist Brian Howe had been with the band for eight(8)years so it's a bit easier to at least 'sort of' accept Bad Company the way they are.I saw Howe with Bad Co. twice and this is pretty much a typical live album.More recent tracks here include "How About That","Here Comes Trouble","Take This Town" and "If You Needed Somebody".For some reason,these tunes seem to grow on you,probably because guitarist Mick Ralphs is STILL able to pen out good songs.The older/vintage Bad Co. cuts are nicely done,considering.Like "Ready For Love","Rock&Roll Fantasy","Shooting Star",their signature love song "Feel Like Making Love"(show me a female that doesn't like this song),"Movin' On","Good Lovin' Gone Bad" and "Can't Get Enough".My only complaint is that "Shake It Up" isn't on here.Nice cover,though.

    Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

    Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

    These guys were in country after I was so I never saw them live. Honestly I really don't like Hip-Hop, rap or any of that stuff, but this CD is great! I listened to ever word and for a Iraqi Vet this thing really hits home. I would like to say thanks to these guys for telling people out there our story, when the media won't and the US citizen doesn't support us either.

    This album is stunning. Although the beats could be more imaginative by studio standards, the fact that 4th25 wrote and recorded this in theater is astonishing. The story that they have to tell is also amazing and one that I love hearing over and over again. Not only is the music great, the group also uses most of their revenue to help out fellow soldiers. I love this group and highly anticipate their next album, because this one was a excellent piece of work.

    This album is dope and really tells a story about war you never hear in the media or from the mouths of the administration. These guys are the hardest American rappers ever. They make Tupac(RIP) sound like Tweety Bird.

    Hey I was with these guys when they did this album. It sounds pretty good with the equipment they had and where they made it at. Everything they talk about is true and straight from the heart. Anyone that wants to hear someone rap about real and not petty "my block" beef pick this album up.

    This album left me speechless! These guys are the real deal.
    You will definitely get your money's worth and will have the urge to pass it on to all your friends. Each track is powerful in its own way and will make you angry,sad and even laugh at times. All tracks are good. The best one is Reality Check. That is the one that made me laugh. Shame on Lil' Wayne and Destiny's Child! I love it :)

    This CD is probably one of the best additions to my classical collection. There are many great opeatic artists both past and present, but after listening to these renditions bu Ying Huang, I can honestly say that she will be rated amongst the greatest!!
    This CD is a well worth purchase for those who enjoy classical music in particular, Opera.

    I'm saddened by the nitpicky nature of some of the opera "critics" who've chimed in on this CD. Like many things artistic, it is easy to criticize, especially on technical details. As a professional musician (pop, not classical) I have worked hard to hear the essence and emotion of a performance, and not to get bogged down in trying to make myself feel superior.

    Case in point: I first heard "O! Mio Babbino Caro" on my infant daughter's show, Classical Baby on HBO. The visual is an animated cow singing to a bull-shaped constellation. Despite the triviality of the image, I found myself weeping every time the segment came on. I don't care for opera much (I prefer instrumental classical music by far) but there was something about that voice and that performance that touched me. I did some online research and finally found this wonderful track. I listened to Callas, Fleming, Brightman, and many others while searching and found them all lacking (no disrespect intended). Maybe it's Huang's youth that captures the subject matter so profoundly (I read the translation, and wept again at the emotional content). Maybe that's just a really compelling cartoon cow, but if a piece of music in a foreign language in an unfamiliar genre can touch my heart like this does, I'm a believer.

    Don't give in to the negativity and snobbishness of some of the other reviews. Listen as a child does, without prejudice and with no axe to grind.

    After her impressive rendition of Cio-Cio-San in Frédéric Mitterrand's filmed opera `Madame Butterfly' (1995), Ying Huang released her first solo opera album, with James Conlon conducting the wonderful London Symphony Orchestra. Huang's voice of exquisite sound and sweet timbre, along with her well refined crafting, brought me special joys throughout the listening. For a young voice like Huang's, this album is a selection with quite some range that displays her excellent bel canto and ineffably beautiful lyricism. Besides the superb quality of her voice, her singing is with unique grace, in the dramatic lines as well as in the coloraturas. Introduced by Huang are also two Chinese songs, "A Little Path", which is a folk song, and "I Live at the Source of the Yangtze River", which is an old song with lyric from an ancient Chinese verse.

    Listening to such singing is a heavenly feeling. Huang's soprano might be a small instrument, but it is very flexible and exquisite, and she will do very well in recital. I will be very much looking forward to hearing more from her.

    Ying Huang has a pleasant, silvery voice and a good coloratura technique. She is fairly young on this recital, I believe only 26. She shows signs of becoming a real musician and artist. I found her coloratura to be pleasant, but not spectacular in the Sutherland and Sills mode. Her biggest advantage is her pure, silvery voice. She has nice Italian diction, but it needs to be projected more. I found her "La Sonnambula" aria to be nicely sung, definitely better than Renée Fleming's overdone version on her overrated "Bel Canto" disc. The ornaments Huang uses are the traditional ones and she tosses them off fairly easily. Her trill definitely needs work. I found her to be at her best in the comic arias, especially the "Un Ballo" aria and the "Don Pasquale" aria. "Una voce poco fa" contains nice coloratura. As for her high notes, they are soft and pure. They do need to be a bit more secure, but at least she hits them. Her staccati need a bit more work in "Caro nome". The last part of this aria is cut. This is the part that includes Gilda's final trill and the diminuendo with which she leaves the stage. I found the Puccini selections sung well, but she needs to add more drama to them. In fact, she needs to work more on characterization overall. She is young, so she will probably improve with time. I found the Mandarin-language selections delightful. This disc can be enjoyed for Huang's pleasant voice, developing musicality, and fairly good coloratura.

    A couple yeras ago, before she was famous, one of her vocal teacher criticized that her voice needed more training. Unforturnately, I didn't see the difference between then and now. Most of time, the natural beauty in her voice covered up her technical shortage, but she reached high notes, the inperfection is obvious.

    In spite of all, she is still a wonderful soprano.

    Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.

    I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!

    I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.

    I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.

    But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).

    And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.

    Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.

    I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

    Hate to join the chorus of neigh-sayers, but jeeeez! I have to agree that with the exception of a few cuts (such as "Hyphenated Harriet") Mandy is a vocal bull in a china shop -- what he doesn't shatter he ... on. What should have been a tribute (I love Sondheim, but do we need ANOTHER anthology recording of oft sung songs?)is more like a wake. Mandy seems intent on becoming the male Ethel Merman -- if you can't hold the note, belt it out with a misplaced vabrato and maybe no one will notice. I REALLY wanted to like this recording, but is truly horrible. If the pipes are gone, Mandy, I hope you get back to acting.

    In the late 1970's when Jessye Norman first appeared as the Diva of Sopranos, Robert Shaw, himself called her the "greatest Voice of the 20th Century!" Since we are now into the 21st Century, it is time we come to know her better thru her natural genre from the Southern Style of Black Spirituals. After playing her early CD for several years on the way to and fro to GA Diagnostic Prison, I still get overwhelmed by her awesome sounds singing, "And I Could'nt Hear Nobody Pray" ; "There's A Man Going Round, Taking Names" ; "There Is A Balm In Gilead" ; "Walk With Me , Children" ; "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name" and of course... "Were You There..." If you wish to find an Ideal Christmas Gift or Birthday Gift for a Southern Girl... This is IT!
    She seems to get better and better in every Christmas Video from First Baptist Church of Augusta, GA.

    I received this CD today and had not heard this album for about 10 years. I saw Dave Edmunds in concert in about 1980-81 at Reading. He was amazing (never heard of him before). The at first nonplussed audience got into the music. The back to basics rock and roll got people dancing. So what that Dave Edmunds is stuck in the past, better that than stuck up. So you may ask why rave about a concert and not the CD; well this live CD has the same get up and dance, full on rock and roll feeling of a concert. Sure the tracks may have been a little doctored in the studio, but that does not detract from this brilliant CD. The other live Dave Edmunds CD I have is `A Pile of Rock Live' compared to `I hear you rockin' `a pile of rock live' could be called a pile of crock. The one track that misses is `Singing The Blues'.

    Yet another in a series of music I got turned onto by Lynn. Well, I'd actually seen the video for Dave Edmunds' cover of Dion and the Belmonts' "The Wanderer" and liked the reduplicated 50's atmosphere, down to the poodle-skirted girl with ponytail. The rest of the album, copied for me, was quite a revelation, displaying rockabilly, country, and rock, but I learned later that Edmunds was more an interpreter of 50's and 60's rock. Call this album a live greatest hits, as it contains some of his better known interpretations, such as Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk," which opens the album.

    Much was my surprise when I heard a familiar tune, and one of the-then few country songs I liked. That was "Queen Of Hearts" by Juice Newton, and its high energy makes it one of the best tracks here. That's followed by the Presley number "Paralyzed," which is a close cousin to "Don't Be Cruel," rhythmically speaking. After that is the cover of "The Wanderer," complete with a horn section that really comes together during the instrumental part of the song.

    The pace picks up with the Graham Parker-penned "Crawling From The Wreckage" with a devil of a piano. Edmunds also collaborated with ELO's Jeff Lynne, who produced his Information album. "Slipping Away," a more mid-paced number with a steady rhythm with dominant keyboards is included here, as is "Information," with its engaging "Happy Days" feel.

    His association with Brinsy Schwarz's bass player, Nick Lowe went beyond playing together, as they embarked on a long songwriting collaboration over the years. Edmunds covered Lowe's "I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock N Roll," originally on his 1977 Get It album, is done in a quick-paced rockabilly style. The live version loses none of its energy. The two also co-wrote "Here Comes The Weekend," another rockabilly number.

    "I Hear You Knockin'", which was one of his most favourite covers, was originally by Smiley Lewis, he who originally did "Blue Monday" before Fats Domino. There is a country-rock feel on this rendition. Love that bluesy guitar in the instrumental part. Edmunds winds things up with "Ju Ju Man," another raucous number that get a big finish.

    Other than his collaboration with Paul McCartney on the movie and soundtrack for Give My Regards To Broadstreet, I haven't heard too much of Edmunds, having confined myself to this live album, but I enjoy what I've heard. Maybe some listening to his other material is in order.

Add to this several textbook original songs ("Here Comes The Weekend," "I Knew The Bride") and more obscure covers ("Paralyzed" is a nearly-forgotten Elvis classic from 1956, "and who could imagine Juice Newton's 1981 "Queen Of Hearts" revisited as a new rockabilly classic?) and you have one of the great lost classics of the 1980's! A must for anyone who loves pure, adrenalized rock & roll!

    I received this CD today and had not heard this album for about 10 years. I saw Dave Edmunds in concert in about 1980-81 at Reading. He was amazing (never heard of him before). The at first nonplussed audience got into the music. The back to basics rock and roll got people dancing. So what that Dave Edmunds is stuck in the past, better that than stuck up. So you may ask why rave about a concert and not the CD; well this live CD has the same get up and dance, full on rock and roll feeling of a concert. Sure the tracks may have been a little doctored in the studio, but that does not detract from this brilliant CD. The other live Dave Edmunds CD I have is `A Pile of Rock Live' compared to `I hear you rockin' `a pile of rock live' could be called a pile of crock. The one track that misses is `Singing The Blues'.

    Yet another in a series of music I got turned onto by Lynn. Well, I'd actually seen the video for Dave Edmunds' cover of Dion and the Belmonts' "The Wanderer" and liked the reduplicated 50's atmosphere, down to the poodle-skirted girl with ponytail.
