4 out of 5 stars A fun way to introduce Classical Music.......2002-06-05

This compilation Album represents the best that the Hooked on Classics series have to offer. THis is an excellent way to make Classical Music interesting to those who might think Classical Music is "boring".

Louis Clark has arranged some of the most popular composers and their most popular works in a way that will keep toes tapping and hands clapping to the fast tempos while some of the slower tracks (Hooked on Romance) become warm melodies to the ear.

As usual, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of londa, plays the arrangements with seeming ease and perfecton. The orcehstras ability to play these arrangements is more than just "playing along with a Rock beat" but, a wonderful demonstration of musical perfection.

Louis Clark createtd the hooked on Classics world, with Albums 1 - 3 and has been followed by others who try to copy his recipe (Hooked on Classics 4 - Hooked on Baroque and Hooked on Classics 5)but never seem to capture the gleam of the original three albums.

Take time to sit back, relax and let Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic Orcehstra take you on a Journey through the Classics with this wonderful compilation!

I can call on no higher authority than that pull-no-punches pair of misfit music critics, Beavis and Butthead. Their opinion of Journey? "If this song was a turd, it would be the same thing." Check the names of everyone that gave this 5 stars, then look for them at the top of the dork list.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of..........2001-07-30

Journey's Greatest Hits is just that, there best hits from "Infinity" to "Raised on Radio" with the inclusion of two soundtrack songs that were left off of "Escape". The quality of the CD is excellent which adds to the quality of music at higher volumes as if you were at one of the concerts in the 80's. A must have for any Journey fan.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a awesome album.......2006-07-14

I found it quite by accident. I don't live in the UK, so I never heard of X Factor. The first song I heard was the cover 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For'. It was tight and had a good sound.

While this albums are all covers, their acoustic, non-alternative sound is a refreshing change to most new music. It would, however, be nice to hear some original stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Debut abomination from the Brothers Grim........2006-05-01

A sad, sad fact that this album, this wretched, soulless, manipulative album - was number one. But guess when it was released, True Believers? The week before Mother's Day. What a coincidence, eh? So, every stupid housewife in Britain got this as a Mothers Day present from their unimaginative "hey, we seen them on TV", teenage (probably pregnant) daughter.

So who are these gimps, then? Simple - reality television contestants. They didn't win it, of course, but since when did THAT mean anything anymore? We've already had the winner, Captain Bland's efforts, then we had the comedy foreigner Chico's "wacky" single, then there was that other guy who's name escapes me who looks like he's a week away from starvation - and now this. And who says these things are clogging up the charts? And, um, isn't it "the winner" who gets the record deal? But hey - there's a lot of morons who buy these things with plenty of cash to go round, so why not give everyone a shot?

What galls me is the absolute lack of any effort involved here. There's no soul, there's no passion - an album consisting entirely of cover versions. And not just covers that mean anything to these guys - the most predictable, easily recognisable popular songs out there. It's not just depressing, it's downright insulting.

What kind of musical heritage is today's generation being left with? Record after record of boring, smiley faced pub singers and karaoke chancers. Where "being a nice singer" means being a superstar.

Of course, this band won't last. These fly-by-nights never do. It'll be Reality TV Show number 435 soon, so there'll be another lorryload of faceless idiots for Generation Dead-Eyed to swoon over. I think I'm going to be sick.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Doris in sentimental mood.......2003-06-26

The first half of this twofer is the album What every girl should know. It was recorded in 1959 and is based loosely on the theme of the title track. The songs are from a variety of sources, although the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein composed three of them - A fellow needs a girl, What's the use of wondering and Something wonderful. Perhaps the most famous songs are When you're smiling (a song that was originally a top five American hit for Seger Ellis in 1928) and Duke Ellington's Mood Indigo. Despite the inclusion of When you're smiling, this album is dominated by ballads.

The second half of this twofer is the album Sentimental journey. It was recorded in 1964 and was something of a nostalgia trip for Doris - truly a sentimental journey back to the songs of the forties. The title track is a re-recording (and updating) of the song that provided Doris with her biggest hit during her days with Les Brown. Some may regard the new version as sacrilege, but I love it, as I also love the original.

The album begins with The more I see you. Originally an American hit for Dick Haymes, Chris Montez had an international hit with his cover in the sixties. I remember you was originally a top ten hit for Jimmy Dorsey but Frank Ifield had a huge sixties hit with it around the world, going to the very top of the UK charts. At last and Serenade in blue were popularised by Glenn Miller. Among the other songs here, you can listen to covers of Come to baby do (another song Doris originally recorded with Les Brown), I'll never smile again (Tommy Dorsey), I'm beginning to see the light (Harry James), It could happen to you (Jo Stafford) and It's been a long long time, which topped the 1945 charts in America via two different versions (Bing Crosby, Harry James).

Although these albums were recorded five years apart, they go well together. Two bonus tracks are included - Falling and There they are.

In the USA, What every girl should know was coupled with I have dreamed to make up a twofer, while Sentimental journey was coupled with Latin for overs to make up another twofer, but those albums do not contain any bonus tracks.

    4 out of 5 stars Another delight.......1999-04-29

In Doris' album career for Columbia Records, I don't believe she ever put out a bad record. Her voice was always so pure and expressive;oft times making up for sometimes weak material. WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW is an album of weak songs, redeemed by impeccable song styling. SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY is great material performed in a "modern" arrangement by Miss Day circa 1965--a look back to her days with Les Brown. These albums on 1 disc are a treat for all Doris fans and those just discovering her magic. It is, however, the weaker in this import series.

'Dream After Dream' is mostly instrumental and described by fans on Amazon.com as 'atmospheric', 'orchestrated', 'thoughtful' and 'energetic'. Features 'Destiny', 'Little Girl', 'Sandcastles' and six others.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is the greatest Journey album ever.......2004-02-27

I originally paid $30 for the CD when it first became available and it was worth every penny. Unlike their mass-produced offerings, which are still quite excellent, this recording showcases the individual member's considerable musical talents. Neal Schon's playing rivals any of the work found on his solo records. Ross Valory contributes a piano piece backed by a string quartet. He also rearranged "Conversations" on the first record into "The Rape" with a broad range of orchestration. Steve Smith's drums own "Sandcastles". And Steve Perry shows off his full range on "Destiny".

I hesitate to call this a Rock record. The vast majority of it sounds like New Age or Contemporary Jazz. Still, open-minded Journey fans who like a broad range of musical styles will find little not to like on this outstanding album.

      5 out of 5 stars Definately A Different Journey.......2004-02-25

I always question why this is not released in the CD format in the US? It is part of the Journey collection. I have the vinyl copy and it is excellent but without a turntable, I can't use it. I'm not sure though that it's worth the money to buy an import but any hard core Journey fan would love to have it. Maybe Columbia records will see this post and consider putting it in the CD format in the US so all Journey fans will have this must album for their own. Without it, your Journey collection is incomplete.

5 out of 5 stars JOURNEY Like You've Never Heard Them Before !.......2003-02-15

A great collection of instrumental music (with some vocals) from one of the greatest rock bands of ALL TIME ! You have to own this CD, you won't be disappointed AT ALL !

5 out of 5 stars One of the best art-rock albums I've ever heard.......2003-01-16

Recorded at the end of the Evolution World Tour, during the pre-productions sessions for Departure, in the early 1980, Dream After Dream is a really great effort, with smooth melodies, strings and horns, arranged and conducted by Neal's father, the late Matthew Schon, and it really shows Journey in a new and refreshing direction. Steve sings his best and the performances of Neal and Smitty totally blew me away. A must for all Journey-crazed fans, Dream after Dream is a rare but a state of the art piece of collection. Here you will experience energy, relaxing moods, melancholy (Snow Theme, written by bassist Ross Valory is a great tune), so it is an album that inevitably it invites to be heard over and over and over!

5 out of 5 stars Not what you'd expect, and beyond your wildest dreams.......2002-12-06

This album isn't very well known and wasn't readily available in the US- until the 1990's. I originally had it on a half speed mastered vinyl record that cost me almost $100 and took me several weeks to get from Japan back in 1985. I got it on CD as soon as it was available in that format.

It was well worth the hassle and expense! Those who are familiar with Neal Schon's solo work will especially appreciate this recording. It was originally a soundtrack for a Japanese movie, and composed and recorded in a little over a month in Japan. Neal Schon's father arranged the orchestral elements which are flawless.

The only vocal tracks on this album are "Destiny," "Sandcastles" and "Little Girl." Steve Perry is breathtaking in all three of these songs,(the clarity and range he had in those days- 1979- was intense) but the instrumentals are just as enjoyable. None of the tracks sound like Journey as portrayed by the songs that got airplay, ("Little Girl" is probably the closest to a "traditional" Journey song) is but the entire album is intense, broad and more like classical music than what you'd expect from a rock and roll band.

In my opinion this is absolutely the most awesome project Journey has done, and ironically the least well known. This is definitely worth every cent, and it will definitely blow you away.
