Starting life as the most competent Misfits tribute band to not actually play Misfits songs, San Francisco Bay Area punks A.F.I. have not only discovered how to write their own snarling melodies, but have developed the confidence to play them without a cloak. Sing the Sorrow marks the band's first major-label release and the difference from their indie albums is in the details: songs freely shift gears and tempos, singer Davey Havoc flexes his pristine vocal abilities by breaking into the occasional falsetto, and sugary tracks like "The Leaving Song" and "The Great Disappointment" now take a place next to more standard nuclear-charged mosh-pit fare like "Bleed Black" and "Dancing Through Sunday." Longtime fans might take it like a kick to the head, but this band is clearly moving toward bigger things. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars "There are no flowers, no not this time.".......2007-04-19

AFI has been around for a while. I haven't heard anything they made before this album, but apparently it was different enough to alienate a lot of fans. In any case, I like it. They make quite capable pop punk with catchy choruses, a high voiced vocalist, and pretty normal guitars. It's not exceptional, but it's solid. Why I really like them is the bombast. Just the tone of the album is a little mightier and significant-seeming than most other stuff in the genre, starting with the opening song's war-cry esque vocals. They do a good combination of the singer's lone voice and several people shouting in unison, and it has the same feel as a general leading his troops into battle.

It could have been front loaded, with all of the singles in the first half, but it maintains quality throughout. The songs do kind of blend together as it goes on, but it's catchy enough that it's hard to care too much. It ends strongly, with the second to last track (which is oddly the first part of the two-part song that ends on the second track), which is a nice softer song, before the epic finale "...But Home Is Nowhere". It has one of the better anthems in it, than after it ends, there's a short silence before a sequence of voices progressing in age tell a creepy story backed up by a minimal piano tune. It then finishes with a stripped-down, well performed capper of a hidden track. Sing the Sorrow is a pretty good punk album helped out by elements that go deeper than the music.

5 out of 5 stars Maturity in the Misery.......2007-03-27

With their rather bold major label debut AFI submerged themselves in oceans of dense production and studio polish; ambitiously expanding their sound into the bittersweet darkly romantic horizon merely hinted at in their previous outings. Yet with all of the overdubs and electronic effects, the band doesn't get lost in the murk as they perform with the same firey intensity that them such an outstanding punk band. The detailed, well thought out album flirts with both mainstream pop and edgy punk with an adult intelligence and adventerous attitude not regularly found in either genre. Each of the songs are distinctive and unique with the band seemingly introducing a new trick with each track; making for a very exciting, unpredictble listen that never sacrifices the overall mood.

Guitarist Puget often slows the tempo into aggressive but steady marches of what could only be described as anthetmic melancholy, his warm riffs and atmospheric melodies absent of blazing heroics but no less memorable and distinctive. His work more or less providing a dense backdrop for the band's emotional center, vocalist Davey Havok. Evolving into one of the best and most unique song writers around, Davey's poetic lyrics are mysterious, romantic, catchy, and heavy on gothic imagery without falling into cheesy cliche . His vocal melodies are often at the forefront as he plays off backing chants and vocals as well as his own different personas to create memorable sing a longs. Though not blessed with the strongest of voices, his frail nasal wail is convincly vunerable and at times even deeply moving, his emotional belts are full of fire without tough guy posing, and his spaciously used low breathy singing voice is sincere and seductive.

The melancholy but upbeat anthems "Leaving Song II" and "Silver and Cold" are superb introductions to the band's unique blend of autumn day atmosphere, pop appeal, and punk energy. The big mainstream single "Girls Not Grey" and "Bleed Black" would almost be catchy pop punk if it wasn't for the mature restraint of the performances, smooth dynamics, and the incredibly dense haunting sound. The experimental "Death of Seasons" not only features what may be the band's first venture into hardcore of the metal kind, but dance music and string arrangements. The beautiful lyrics of "This Celluloid Dream" climaxes the album with a triumphant stuttering gallop that isn't easy to get out of one's head. The hidden track that follows "..But Home is Nowhere" is the band at there most experimental and successful. Spoken word poetry, light piano and heavy studio effects gradually shimmer away to unveil the band's most naked and revealing ballad. Davey gives the best vocal performance of his career as he quietly croons with convincing regret in his real voice. The song gradually soars to a powerful climatic high before fading away into a droning sea of what sounds like backwards violin/guitar loops. This is the band at the height of the their huge potential and hopefully not the peak of their powers.

4 out of 5 stars A good CD, but its just not AFI........2007-01-29

This is a good CD, many great songs that are dark and mysterious in their own cool little ways. AFI after Shut your mouth and open your eyes became much more serious. If you listen to Decemberunderground and than to Answer that. You couldnt really tell any similarities between the two. Not even Havok's voice sounds the same. But whatever it works.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-01-21

I really cannot put into words just how great this album is. All of the songs are deep and meaningful with great instrumentation and lyrics. The singing and back-up singing is amazing as well. I have heard all of AFI's other albums, and they were amazing, too. Although their other albums are great, none of them can hold a candle to the classics here.

Miseria Cantare-Starts the album off with haunting and dark tones and chanting.
The Leaving Song Part II.-Picks up the pace and adds great guitar sounds.
Bleed Black-Another great guitar song with great back-up vocals.
Silver and Cold-An album favorite, this song with amazing lyrics and vocals.
Dancing Through Sunday-Great guitar solo and vocals.
Girl's Not Grey-Very catchy singing and nice drums.
Death of Seasons-Amazing bass intro, a lot of good screaming.
The Great Disappointment-Best guitar on the album, good drumming, amazing vocals.
Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings)-Very catchy guitar riffs, unique sounding.
This Celluloid Dream-Amazing harmony between all the instuments and vocals, some of the best lyrics.
The Leaving Song-A ballad, and it fits right in. Vocalist sings while only the guitar plays, very powerful.
...But Home Is Nowhere-Great high vocals, interesting chanting and screaming, agian great harmony between band members.
Spoken Word Poem-I skip this sometimes, because sometimes I'm not in the right mood to hear it, but I still appreciate it for its beauty.
This Time Imperfect-The deepest song with powerful lyrics with great vocal and instrumental value.

I have listened to this album for a solid 3 years, and don't plan on stopping any time soon, as it's my favorite album. It really is an amazing CD with great variety and no weak points. All of these songs belong with classics like God Called in Sick Today and The Days of the Phoenix. This is basically a Greatest Hits Album.

Tan Dun straddles the very different worlds of concert music and film scores, winning admirers in both. He's perhaps best known for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which shares with Hero a visual poetry that transcends the sword-filled action film genre. In Crouching Tiger, Tan Dun's music was often striking. In Hero he often lapses into repetition and cliché, a failing compensated for by several appealing cues. The Overture, for example, begins with the mournful wail of ancient Chinese instruments set against pounding drums, a promising start that evokes ancient China and the struggles to come. There's a mournful soprano vocalise in "Gone With the Leaves," and the "Warriors" cue recalls Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky. The plucking of the ancient Chinese lute in "In the Chess Court" evokes a timeless, peaceful mood, contrasting with the thrilling kodo drummers showcased in "Swift Sword." Itzhak Perlman gets cover billing for violin solos any competent studio fiddler could have handled. Tan Dun's admirers will want this, and audiophiles will love those kodo drummers. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Perfection at its Best.......2007-01-05

I received the Hero CD in mint condition and in a timely fashion. There's a plethora of things one could complain about, and when something works how it should, sometimes it gets overlooked. Not this time! I would just like to commend Amazon.Com on a job well done...

5 out of 5 stars Tranquil Beauty.......2006-08-08

After seeing Hero, one of the (many) things that stuck with me was the evocative soundtrack. It set a perfect backdrop to the artistry and beauty of the story.

After purchasing the soundtrack, I was reminded of many of the scenes I enjoy, especially the tracks for the fight in the chess house ("In the Chess Court"), and in the yellow wood ("Gone with Leaves"). "Longing" is one of the most hauntingly serene pieces of film music I have heard.

This is not, obviously, a CD to listen to while you do step aerobics.
The theme is repeated and varied often, evoking the way the film's story is repeated from different perspectives, but those with short attention spans may perceive it as merely repetitive.

Beyond its association with the film, this soundtrack is an incredibly calming work of art. To be enjoyed with a good cup of hot tea.
5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-03-19

Interesting way to present some Chinese history by convoluted storytelling. Jet Li provides a subtle, challenging performance. It's a visually stunning movie to look at, as well. In a way, it's a lot like some classic Westerns in that the gorgeously stark landscapes of China become just as much a "star" as the players.

One of the real draws is the music. Tan Dun's compositions are beautiful, sad and celebratory at the same time, and haunting. I think it was pure genius to pair his compositions with Perlman. I had to wait a few months for the DVD, but I went out and bought the music CD immediately after seeing this gem of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Tranquility, Serenity, Beauty, and Superb Asian Movie Soundtrack.......2006-02-25

When I want to reconnect with my inner self and take a "time out" from my rat race life, I play either this CD or the sound track from "The Last Samurai". The theme from this CD stays in your head all day. If you like soundtracks, asian style muusic, classical music, and beauty, this CD has it all. I sometimes end up watching the movie again later in the week. I collect movie soundtracks and this is in my top ten.

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......2005-11-26

I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

5 out of 5 stars The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26

All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Snow Borne Sorrow is released under the name Nine Horses, but make no mistake--this is a David Sylvian CD, his best in two decades. After the dislocated dissonance of Blemish, Sylvian returns to songs and melody, recalling the jazz and ambient inflected work of earlier CDs like Product Description

Probably the most commercial release that David Sylvian has ever been involved with, Nine Horses still manages to sound unlike any other album out there at the moment. Breaking boundaries, fusing styles and yet delivering beautiful pop melodies and stunning vocals on songs that Sylvian fans everywhere are bound to fall in love with. Nine Horses brings together Sylvian, his brother Steve Jansen (ex-Japan), and the well respected Burnt Friedman and they have created a suite of remarkably poignant songs that are part social commentary and part self-analysis. Sylvian and his collaborators have never sounded better nor the material more immediate. Other guest contributors include: Ryuichi Sakamoto, Stina Nordenstam, Arve Henriksen and many more. Samadhi Sound. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth as silk.......2007-03-16

This music is smooth as silk, and often is gorgeously anchored by the sinewy bass lines of Keith Lowe (no pun intended).

5 out of 5 stars Big Fan of Sylvian.......2007-01-03

I've been a big fan of Sylvian ever since Dead Bees on a Cake and this album doesn't disappoint at all. Only problem is waiting as long as we do between albums for the next! This album clearly is better than the last, however, which had some seemingly experimental songs that didn't quite work for me. LOVE this one, though and can't wait for his next.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sylvian.......2006-12-09

This is the best Sylvian since Secrets. It's penetrating, powerful and beautiful. Even a little humor.

You like Sylvian? Buy this.

3 out of 5 stars a little flux, a little mutability.......2006-10-28

In many ways, Snow Borne Sorrow felt like a surprise. "Blemish" while very experimental, began to feel like a boldly decided direction; abandoning the lush, Scott Walker-esque melancholoy of his 80s solo work in favor of cold, white noise and electronic sound scapes. But then here came Snow Borne Sorrow. I'm not sure what other people are hearing, but these songs are definitely very well structured, well written, impecibly produced, with lyrics on par with Leonard Cohen (well, almost). Yes, it's an undeniably admirable record. Then why do I, a diehard fan of Sylvian for more than 20 years, find myself advancing through most of the songs on this record?

My immediate answer is that the songs are just too, too long and laden with meaning and heavyness. Not that Sylvian's stuff has ever been light fluff, take "Before the Bullfight" as an example. But missing here are the rich arrangements like Sakamato's contribution to "Beehive" or Fripp's huge guitar work on "...Bullfight" that lift the heavyness of the lyric or vocal styling into something warmer. The songs don't tend to move that much on Snow Borne Sorrow. They find a pattern and they stick with it for a long time. They feel as if they written on loops. Also, his voice, which I am utterly devoted to, is mixed entirely too high and never gives the music a chance to take center-stage.

What I find most redeeming about SBS are the lyrics. The wit and depth of image are superior to anything he's written before. Lyrically, it's the picture of an artist working at the peak of his abilities. On Seratonin, bed sheets become "mountain ranges at my feet." Harmony is new for Sylvian but it comes off strangely yet masterfully on the chorus of "Atom and Cell." But once again, not one song jumps out at me on this record and makes me say THIS is a phenomenal and perfect Sylvian song, the way "Talheim" or "Fire in the Forest" does.

Finally, it's worth it for any fan to pursue and ponder. As for anyone else, I'm not so sure.

4 out of 5 stars did anyone notice ?.......2006-10-14

for all the sylvian fans who reviewed: did anyone notice that on "a history of holes" that david sylvian wrote one of his best lyrics? the beats and the rhythm drop out temporarily and david sings: when i was a boy/and i made mistakes/i was humiliated/till i knew my place. snow borne sorrow is a very good album. it may require one to listen to it a few times and to remember that david has an adventurous spirit. there is a feeling of completeness when listening to a recording artist who shares with you what you want AND need.

I am not a music critic nor do I "know" much about music but if you love lovely violin music you will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recording.......2007-01-04

The Kreisler pieces are played exceptionally well. The one disc alone is worth the price of the double disc collection. Great playing.

5 out of 5 stars DJ Shadow and RJD2 have company . . ........2007-05-28

I recently purchased this album not exactly knowing what to expect. The guy at the music store recommended this to me. It is now my favorite album.

5 out of 5 stars No sophomore slump here.......2007-05-03

I hardly ever review albums but saw this one didn't have one yet, and it definitely deserves one. About six months ago or so I picked up Tailor's debut, Tales of the Forgotten Melodies. It quickly became one of my favorite instrumental hip hop albums, right up there with my Rjd2 collection. But his new effort, Hope & Sorrow, definitely one-ups it.

There's no weaknesses here at all, each track has its own vibe, and all the guest vocals are strong. In fact that's one thing that sets this apart from Tailor's debut; his choice of vocals, with more than a few tracks featuring female singers, perfectly compliment the music. Think Alias's partner in crime, Tarsier. And after only a couple listens, you'll find some of these songs still looping through your head well after you've put the headphones down. The whole album has that secret ingredient that makes it grow on you more and more with every listen. I've spun it several times in the week or so I've had it and still haven't gotten tired of a single track. The whole album also still has what seems to be Tailor's signature elements of plenty of strings and horns, but it has a great balance, and he really knows how to weave them into a great composition. And the samples on this album are also stellar, just like they were in Forgotten Melodies.

If you're a fan of instrumental hip hop in the vein of Rjd2, DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, etc., this is a must have. But Wax Tailor has a sound all his own that you can only get a feel for by listening, not comparing, so check it for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars poor recording.......2007-04-30

Besides the bacground hiss, I found I had to turn the volume up to max just to hear it. So when you play more than one CD the others will be normal volume but when Kreisler starts you hear nothing and have to turn the volume all the way up to have it at low normal levels. So I recommend passing on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Travel to the Old Vienna.......2006-01-26

Sometimes the author isn`t the best performer of his own works. That`s not the case. I completely agree with the previous reviewer: yes, only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
While listening to this music you so wounderfully feel the spirit of the old Vienna, that most technically perfect record couldn`t compare with this impressions. Treat surface noise of the records made in 1912-1946 as the scent of that distant time (by the way, nearly the age gone) - and you would be completely satisfied, because the playing by Kreisler is so scincere and soulful. So if you like Kreisler - don`t think twice. This is CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars Only Kreisler Can Play Kreisler *****.......2005-05-08

What can I say? Only Kreisler can play Kreisler. Get a discography of Fritz Kreisler and start hunting down everything you can find by this man. You can compare violinists; Heifetz has astounding technique, Milstein's always wonderful, Oistrakh is a favorite of many, Kogan can play anything, etc., etc., etc.. But Kreisler... is a unique personality of the violin. Yehudi Menuhin said of him in his autobiography, there are many great violinists with perhaps greater technique in this area or that; but "Kreisler mystifies me." Bruno Walter, the great conductor, said of Kreisler, "He did not play the violin; he BECAME the violin." and this is true. There is something special about Kreisler that transcends violin playing itself. Something heavenly is communicated by him with his instrument. Transfers from old disks are always of varying quality. Kreisler lived a long time ago and recording techniques were very primitive; but Kreisler even seems to rise above the pops and the clicks. Other artists are drowned out by them but Kreisler soars above them and makes one forget they are there. You're focused on the beauty and the background noise seems to disappear entirely. Other violinists have tried
to play Kreisler and perhaps get the notes right, most notably among them, Zino Francescatti (who plays Kreisler better than any other man except Kreisler), but only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
If you want to hear it best, put up with the background hiss. It's worth it. If you want a modern recording, see if you can find Francescatti's tribute album to Fritz Kreisler. it's OOP, but an LP in mint condition sometimes appears on an online auction service. Why the Francescatti album ever went OOP I do not know. He is the only modern violinist that ever really tapped into the soul of 'Fritz' when he plays Kreisler. If the disk is ever again released, snap it up before it goes OOP again. In the final analysis, modern violinists, at most, will give you a representative selection of only about 16 tracks and usually you get the worn chestnuts over and over again. Enough of Kreislers own recordings are still available that you can still get the whole gamut of his discography if you just look. Do so!

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2004-03-08

No crap...really? OF COURSE THIS RECORDING IS A TRANSFER! YOU THINK THEY HAVE DIGITAL RECORDING TECHNOLOGY BACK THEN???? Man, that review from Delaware annoys me.

Go with the first review. This recording is a must. It is one of the great violin recordings. Even my old violin teacher advise me to play some of Kreisler stuff to improve techniques. Kreisler is a legend. Lesson and appreciate the beauties of the violin.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing technical quality.......2000-08-29

I realize that this cd was a transfer, but I have other music that was transferred from old recordings, and they sound much better than this. The disappointing technical quality of the sound on this CD disturbs me. In fact, it sounds worse than the vinyl I already own. Very loud hissing, some popping. The music doesn't actually sound like it's been recorded in a tunnel, but the sound is not as full as I had hoped.

On the other hand, I bought this after comparing Kreisler's performance with Joshua Bell on the samples; and I find I always prefer Kreisler. With no disrespect to Mr. Bell, I find I prefer the composer performing his own music.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

First you have to like Bartok. Not everyone enjoys the 20th century extention of classical music. If you do like Bartok and want to hear his violin compositions - then buy this CD and hear a true master at work.

5 out of 5 stars Great new album.......2007-05-26

Great direction after changing singers. The first album after a lineup change espessially singers is always a pivotal time for any band. Well Mushroomhead jump ahead with yet another great release, heavy, good riffs, cool lyrics and overall just a great album. Looking forward to the next one.

4 out of 5 stars A re-invented, stripped down Mushroomhead........2007-05-09

For all you Slipknot fans out there who aren't giving respect to these guys because of the feud between them, I think you owe it to yourselves to give these guys a listen. Other then that they both wear costumes, nothing else is similar. Mushroomhead has a unique style, and no one else sounds like them. "Simple Survival", the first single, is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in the last year. I have enjoyed these guys and Slipknot over the years and realized that they are both talented bands that deserve attention. This cd is more raw-sounding than previous efforts, but it rocks. Lots of song variety. Some really heavy stuff, and some slower, ballad-like songs. Not as good as XX, but better than XIII.

5 out of 5 stars not a kid.......2007-04-23

i have to say hat i perfer ss and xx over xiii, xiii was good but the other ones had more heart and you or peeple like me could relate to xx and ss more. xiii was basically like they were just playing for fun, not saying they shouldnt but seriously. and all my friends make mushroomhead look mainstreem through xiii. its just not the same, so give this cd an actual listen to it mite take time for it to sink in them youll like it more.jmann was good , god bless him but its time to move on quit wining about him, and i like the fact mushroomhead members are more individual but still keep the x face. it was time for a change, shmotz says they get sik of looks so its pretty reasonable they changed, and jnothing sade it was time , wich i didnt expect to keep the old looks and trademark sound from xiii.

2 out of 5 stars It's ok..........2007-04-18

Mushroomhead's long awaited fifth, or third, or whatever numbered album was quite a disappointment for me. I just found myself disliking it more and more with every listen. Some songs on this CD are good, but others just don't do anything or go anywhere, just dragging on with the same boring riffs and harmonies.

Am I the only one who notices that the keyboards and piano, something which were a big part of Mushroomhead's sound, are barely used here? It seemed like samples were used more here.

What I enjoyed about the vocals on past albums was the contrast they provided to each other, J Mann's fast growls and raps mixed with Jeffrey's weird singing made it so interesting. Now I see what the band lost when J Mann left. Waylon is alright at screaming, nothing special though. He uses the typical Metalcore / Nu-Metal shouting you hear by most bands from 2000 onward. His singing voice is ok at times, and downright annoying at others. Jeffrey's voice is still weird as ever, which is good. It makes some parts (like The Fallen and Erase the Doubt) interesting.

The worst aspect of this album are the lyrics, they are horrible! Some of Jeffrey's lyrics weren't good, but he managed to write some good ones, but all of Waylon's suck! He's a terrible lyricist! Just listen to what Waylon sings on Erase The Doubt, and those aren't the only ones, just plain awful! I almost gagged when I heard him say "I cannot take this pain, I cannot take this shame." Gah! It's basically the "poetry" you see high schoolers write!

The guitars and bass do your typical distorted riffing, not a big change considering Mushroomhead use that a lot. Some of the riffs were ok, but, like other things about this CD, other parts were just downright boring. Woudl it have killed them to include some variation in the guitar and bass? Considering that those two instruments basically carry most of the songs.

Skinny is a good drummer though. He shows what he can do here, and I like his drumming style.

All in all, this is not Mushroomhead's best album. Far from it. In fact, it is probably their worst, considering that they've done so much better in the past. It's ok for a few listens, but easily forgettable.

5 out of 5 stars In an age of redundancy, Mushroomhead strives for something different.......2007-03-25

Tired riffs? This album is a showcase of musical range. The entire spectrum of musical instruments is used in this 12-track epic album. True, the boyz have offered a few more melodic tracks, but what a beautiful blend of the hard and raw with soul-searching, searing rhythms of a Mushroomhead nature. You're not going to find Def Leppard power-ballads, or old-man-Lars-just-looking-for-a-steady-paycheck patterns. This is a unique blend that holds your attention all the way through. Savior Sorrow is not XIII, but Mushroomhead set a high bar with their last release that will likely never be exceeded. I'm not going to compare the two, because it isn't fair. Instead, compare Savior Sorrow with the crap you hear on the radio today, and tell me that this isn't a 5-star masterpiece.
