Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Blivit is a rock power trio from Philadelphia, otherwise known as the rock bastard, since they create such a thick sound without the use of guitars. Within one year of existence they were nominated for Most Original Band in the Philly Music Awards, and were furthermore nominated for best keyboardist and best bassist. Blivit songs are familiar, but like nothing you've ever heard...
Product Description
Unhand The World is Blivit's first release--a fifteen song, 50 minute ride that's also packed with lots of cd extras, such as a hilarious skate game, video footage, and a peek into material from the next cd. From heartfelt rockers such as "Unhand the World," "This Condition" and "Your Life" to tongue-in-cheek anthems like "Three Chord Chorus" Unhand the World truly lives up to the "rock bastard" style they've coined. Hard to believe, there's no guitar used on this cd (with exception to one interlude, a comical tribute to Old Smuggler Whiskey)! This cd rocks hard, and the songs are different, but memorable. Unhand the World presents some of Blivit's earliest material ("Rockin' The Boat," "Lobotomy," "Spinning," and offers a taste that there's surely more to come from the rock bastard.

Album Description
They say third time's a charm, and Enter The Worship Circle meets our expectations! With eclectic melodies tailored by the voices of Ben and Robin Pasley, Barry & Michelle Patterson and Kate Hurley this album is a worthy continuation of the insanely popular Worship Circle series. The recording is as live and rambunctious as any before, and the feel of being in a living room surrounded by hand drums and people who love God is tangible...
Customer Reviews:
Amazing!.......2005-02-20
This cd is amazing!!!! The best one yet. Some of the most beautiful worship songs that I have everr heard!!
Third Circle = the best yet.......2004-06-06
One could only imagine my excitement when two of my favorite bands, Waterdeep & 100 Portraits, joined together to make a worship album; I wasn't disappointed. The "First Circle" was an amazing experience, but it didn't end there. 100 Portraits gave us another Circle, which was also good but not as good as the first. Now, with the "Third Circle," Ben & Robin Pasley (100 Portraits) have joined thier incredible talent and rhythms with Kate Hurley and Berry & Michelle Patterson to record the most incredible worship album I have ever heard. The songs are extremely intimate as only guitars and hand percussion instruments are used, but they are also filled with life, moving the listener into the presence of God. This is a must have album! Finally, some inovative Christian music that is setting standards instead of simply copying redundant mainstream junk.
Does Not Disappoint.......2003-12-31
Yes, like you, I was hesitant to purchase the third installment of Enter The Worship Circle. Yes, like me, you will purchase this album and not be disappointed.
The First installment blew me away (four stars). The Second was good and had it's moments but was redundant in places to the first (3 stars). The Third installment might actually be as good, if not better than the first, because it manages to match the first in emotional punch and lyrical beauty yet retains a freshness it shouldn't have as a sequel but does.
If this album doesn't make you get up and dance and sing along then you probably have died and NOT gone to heaven.
music is a candle, is a portal to God.......2003-11-20
This CD was mailed to me right here in the middle of a stressful time in art college- I have escaped into it every evening, and even brought it to listen to in my studio. I am an avid follower of the Pasley's, and their hearts, and the hearts of the other people on this album are so sincere and beautful. Tracks 5, 11, and 14 are my favorites!

Good Road House Celtic Music.......2007-01-10
Although they sound a bit tame compared to contemporary Celtic Music, Five Hand Reel Pioneered "Plugged In" Irish and Scottish Music. They are one of those cult groups of the genre still well worth listening too.
What a joy!.......2006-11-04
I had two of these on vinyl and wore them out. I had looked for them on CD's for years and all but cave up finding them. To find three of their albums on two CD's was a joy. I loved the band and have been a fan of Dick Gaughan and Bobby Eaglesham for many years. If you are a fan of Steeleye Span, buy this. You will not be disapointed. Both have outstanding voices and Dick's guitar is amazing.
One of the finest folk rock groups ever.......2006-10-15
In 1978, somebody handed me a Five Hand Reel album and said "you must listen to this." In 1985, a pro burned my spare vinyl copies to CD (so I wouldn't wear them out). In 2006, a commercial CD set finally became available...and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Five Hand Reel is amongst the few to which I have listened consistently over all these years.
The CD set comes with a history of Five Hand Reel, and Dick Gaughan's web site ([...]) gives his side of the story. Search the web on Gaughan and Five Hand Reel - there is tons of info out there.
Five Hand Reel's music is timeless: it could have been created last week or 30 years ago. It is simply great music. The albums speak for themselves.
I truly regret having never seen them live. It saddens me that so few Americans are familiar with this group.
Important re-issues of great folk-rock!!!!.......2006-08-15
Thanks BGO UK for bringing out these long unavailable sought after Scots folk-rock gems. Five Hand Reel headed by the wonderful guitar and vocals of Dick Gaughan was Scotland's answer to the Irish Planxty and the English Steeleye Span in the mid -late seventies. This is high quality stuff with a great selection of traditional material arranged and played with wonderful feeling and virtousity. Check out Gaughan's electric playing on Paddy Fahey's Reel/A Pinch Of Snuff and you'll swear they sped up the tape! Intresting drum sound on these also, the "tight kit" sound of the highland pipe band snare. Too bad this band didn't last very long seems the punk-new wave movement of the late seventies was hard on the folk-rockers and record companies didn't want em' anymore. I've longed for these to be issued to replace my worn vinyl ever since the dawn of the CD age, so here they are!! If you've never heard these your'e in for a real treat, if you are a fan you'll be delighted to hear Five Hand Reel without the surface noise that marred the LP pressings. Sure I could grip about no bonus tracks such as the rare single "Reel Reggae" or some BBC sessions, but that's what future re-masters and re-issues are for, right? I'll buy them too! Folk-Rock Reissue Of The Year in my book! Highly Recommended without reservation!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
One of the best motion picture soundtracks ever!.......2006-10-09
I loved the original SAW movie and enjoyed the music score and the atmosphere the music throughout the movie portrayed. This album release is a monumental record produced and mixed by Charlie Clouser (Ex N-I-N). There is not a song on this album that is bad or not worth being on this release.
'Sturm' is a song created by Front Line Assembly released specifically for this movie and the song is a perfect opener. The song is purely industrial and features the best of what FLA offers, the driving industrial beat with hard hitting nasal base lyrics.
'Bite The Hand that Bleeds' is a softer industraial/dark theme song by the kings of future metal - Fear Factory who I am a big fan of. In the DVD's special features, this song came with its own music video taking bits from the actual movie.
The other bands in this album I have not heard of but the songs were good, some more harder in sounding than others but worth the listen. What was the winning part to this album was the movie score by Charlie Clouser.
I have to agree with other prior reveiwers are say the best two songs of this album are 'Hello Zepp' and 'Zepp Overture'. Both songs are genious and great sounding. I have Hello Zepp on a website entry page song. It is one of the best songs I have ever listened to.
I assure anyone who is a fan of Saw, you will enjoy this album immensely and take alot out of it. I am simply in awe of this block-buster album.
Atmosphere........2005-12-14
What makes this album worth 5 stars? That may be one of the questions you find yourself asking. I'll tell you why. During the commentary for the Saw dvd Leigh Whannell (who played Adam and wrote the movie) said he felt the movie had a gritty, muddy and rusty feel to it. I agree. So, he wanted to find somebody to do a score and bands that would give off that feel. Charlie Clouser (ex-nin) does a wonderful job here. So, he brings in bands such as Fear Factory and Pitbull Daycare (I have spoken with their drummer, he is a really nice guy.) I prefer Black Metal and Death Metal over industrial. However, I love this soundtrack. I have not been able to take it out of my walkman since getting it. First, the atmosphere Charlie Clouser gives off, is right on the money and I am highly impressed. Also, I am not the biggest fan of Fear Factory but their song is quite good as well. However, my favorite song is "Hello Zepp" the epic song, in while the final few minutes (most shocking as well)of the movie are played out. That song is worth the money alone. So, even though you may not enjoy industrial, this is still worth giving a try. Enjoy
5 stars for the Score by Clouser.......2005-10-01
I bought this album for the score of the movie, not the bands featured on the album. Charlie Clouser did a great job, a chilling and awesome score. My favorite track is "hello zep" which was my main motivation of getting this album. Some of the band tracks here are actually pretty good, but when it comes to a soundtrack album, I prefer the score. Good album overall. Can't wait for the Saw 2 soundtrack.
Clouser's score= 4 stars. Everything else= 1 star. .......2005-09-19
I'm kinda divided with this disk-I really, really liked the score itself, that is the stuff performed by Charlie Clouser, especially the effectively bleak "Hello Adam" and the great "Hello Zepp" and "Zepp Overature". Unfortunately, the heavy metal/rock/whatever--*vomits*. I personally hate that type of music. The disk is definitely worth the price, but just be aware that there are some really awful metal tracks amongst the otherwise very good score.
Sweeeeeeet.......2005-05-18
OKay. I was shocked that only 8 other people had reviewed this great soundtrack. But that's besides the point. Charlie Clouser did a fine job with the original score, especially "Hello, Zepp" and "Zepp Overature". The tracks by the bands were good, some were definately better than others. "You Make Me Feel So Dead" by Pitbull Daycare is by far my favorite track and "Wonderful World" by the Psycho Pumps is equally awsome. "Bite the Hand That Bleeds" by Fear Factory SUCKS ASS!!!! I was extremely dissapointed when that was the only video on the DVD. Oh well, I'm also dissapointed that I can't for the life of me find anything else on the Psycho Pumps. It's as if they only did this one song for this album. That's kinda sad if it's true. Anyway, if you were a fan of the film, get this.

Correction.......2006-12-13
Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed for the banisters, which was not more than a rope, fixed to the wall. The banisters teared out, and Wunderlich fell down the whole stairs. Fritz Wunderlich died in hospital the next day. It was only short before his 36'th birthday. An exceptional singing career had come to an untimely end. Some people believe that Wunderlich was drunken at the time of accident. If this is true can't be proven any more. But still this is not what his close friends said, regarding his accident and his death. In my opinion Wunderlich was the last of the really great tenors of the last century. All the tenors which came to fame after him (sorry folks, even such maestros as Pavarotti and Domingo) lack a certain quality in singing. It's the ease of breath flow, or singing on the breath without pushing the voice, it's the overtones, the legato, the mezza voce, the messa di voce and many more things - in short: the overall beauty of the voice through both registers. Wunderlich was the last tenor who had all this. Other examples are Caruso, McCormack, Gigli (despite the sobbing in his later recordings) and of course the wonderful Jussi Björling. But these are only some few names. If you listen for example to the cd's in the box "Famous tenors of the past" you will find that there were many very good and outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20'th century and - as we can only assume - in the time before the invention of the grammophone. Take a close look at todays famous tenors (I know, there are some quite good and promising ones) but what are they in comparison to those tenors (or better to say, to their voices and singing) I just mentioned before?
Please make your own decision.
Fritz Wunderlich can do no wrong...........2006-05-05
... okay, maybe. It's just that I've never heard a recording I didn't love. And I prefer that he sing everything in German even when that means not using original language.
This is a bit strange because I'm most often bugged by Don Carlos and Vepres in Italian (just a personal quirk). Of course, I'm also bugged by dropping the "s" in Don Carlos, which is always incorrect. The man's name IS Carlos whether in Italian or French.
I tried to write Mr. Avila a personal note, but could not, so let me say that Fritz Wunderlich did not die of cancer, but a dreadful accident in Scotland (I'll not go into the whys and wherefores, I just wanted to set PART of the record straight.)
The Wonder of Wunderlich.......2005-11-22
Deutsche Grammophone does it again! This is an extensive 3-cd compilation album featuring the artistry of the great German tenor Fritz Wunderlich in a variety of vocal repertoire - Baroque cantata/oratorio, opera and Lieder. Like the other critic pointed out, I first heard Fritz sinigng a superb Tamino in the Karl Bohm Magic Flute, although I have also heard him sing Lieder opposite the mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who were his contemporaries and colleagues. Wunderlich died tragically in 1966 of cancer. He inspired a generation of purely lyric tenors or "tenors di grazie" whose charming voice would never roughen and lack grace. His Germanic style earned him popularity in World War II Europe and he was the leading exponent of Lieder in the 50's. His tenor voice is glorious, as close to a male angel as possible. On this recording, we are treated to sumptuous arias from Bach's Christmas/Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas. Also noteworthy are the unsurpassed performances of Mozart tenor heroes- such as Belmonte from "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" (Abduction from the Seraglio) and his unbeatable Tamino from Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute. He sings bel canto opera arias fo tenor, from master composers Rossinni, Bellini and Verdi. While I don't much like that he is singing Italian arias in German, one must remember that at this time, in the LP Era of World War II Germany and Austria, German-born opera singers sang Italian opera in German translation/revisions. While many German singers could indeed sing in Italian, they were mostly trained to sing it in German because of excessive national pride and because Germans viewed Italian opera as course and un-melodic. Still, there have been superb German singers who sang in Italian like Wagner diva Birgit Nilsson, baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Peter Schreier, soprano Edda Moser, baritone Walter Berry, tenor Herman Pretty, all post-Wunderlich sensations. Wunderlich sings Lieder in one CD with great and unrivaled musicianship. Especially impressive are the Viennese pieces. Further to the cd's this album is equipped with photos of Wunderlich and his family and a detailed profile biography.
I wish I could give this release more than 5 stars: it's terrific!!!.......2005-10-28
I knew little about the German tenor Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), except reading the accolades given to his recordings and performances by reviewers in "American Record Guide" over the past 13 years. I knew Wunderlich recorded the role of Tamino in the famous DG recording of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (Now on DG Originals CDs), but was not aware of what a wide range of repertoire he had until hearing this release.
This release has a wide variety of Wunderlich's discography, including Bach arias from his Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas; his Mozart roles in "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" (Eugen Jochum/Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and "Die Zauberflote" (Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic); a variety of arias and duets by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, mostly sung in German, and with Hermann Prey, baritone and Erika Koth, soprano in many of the duets; Baroque arias by Handel, from "Xerxes" (including the famous "Ombre mai fu" sung in German) and "Julius Caesar", selections from Monteverdi's "Orfeo" (an early track from 1955 sung in Italian); Schumann's "Dichterliebe", 4 Beethoven Lieder, including "Adelaide" and "Der Kuss"; and 9 Schubert lieder, including "An der Musik," and "Der Musensohn", all with Hubert Giesen, piano; Popular songs such as "Granada" and Viennese songs, with chamber orchestra accompaniment. There are no texts for the songs, but you may have text booklets with other CD releases, so don't really need them when you hear Wunderlich's beautiful voice.
There is a booklet with articles about Wunderlich's career, including a preface by his widow, Eva Wunderlich, photos of Wunderlich as a boy and young man, with his wife Eva in 1965, and children Constanze, Wolfgang, and Barbara. I enjoy reading and looking at the booklet, even apart from listening to the beautiful recordings.
Wunderlich was a genius, and his voice sounds great in every track, mono (some, but not a majority) and stereo (most of the tracks in the 7 discs are stereo) alike. If you love great music, and opera, but like me aren't often of a mind to sit still for 3 hours to listen to one, get this. It's a great release, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm thankful to God for great music, for the ability to hear and feel, and for Fritz Wunderlich and his service to music lovers everywhere.

If you think that musicals are only outsize, outlandish spectacles hatched on Broadway, The It Girl deftly shows that there are other options. This small show was created in 2001 at the York Theater--located in a church's basement, it's as close as you get to a barn in New York City. Loosely based on the 1927 Clara Bow vehicle It, the show gleefully runs through all the 1920s classic situations and characters: chases, flappers, mistaken identities, a boat cruise, a department-store heir, and fake French accentsit's all there. You can almost hear the ghost of P.G. Wodehouse, librettist for the Gershwins' Jazz Age classics, cheering. The It Girl breezes through thanks to its cast's game can-do energy and the strength of Paul McKibbins and B.T. McNicholl's perky tunes, which deploy nice melodic resources and make the most of a six-piece band. There's enough knowing pastiche here to keep the saccharine at bay, but the creative team also shows genuine resource and love for musicals as a genre. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Can't Get Enough of "It".......2006-02-11
I took my daughter to see a production of this at a theatre in Hopewell where I sometime perform. We really enjoyed the show, and my daughter asked me to buy her a copy if the CD. I can't stop listening to this show. Great score...great orchestrations and great performances. I'm going to buy myself a copy too.
This musical has IT!.......2005-04-14
Maybe I'm biased, because I'm friends with the composer... but I was not when I first saw this musical, and I fell in love with it. A truly toe-tapping score, and adorably witty lyrics. It's a charming gem of a show, and I recommend it to any music lover.
The characters are fun, the story is marvelously scandalous (in a family oriented way), and the performances are top-drawer!
Terrific!.......2003-05-18
Like another reviewer, was lucky enough to see this show at the York Theatre in Manhattan. A wonderful musical score and clever lyrics made this show an absolute delight. A must-have CD.
This show is "How Do You Say...?" (Ah, yes) AMAZINGLY GREAT!.......2003-03-17
This show has a STELLAR cast! The cast is relatively small, only consisting of three men and four women. The music is original and REALLY clever (and based in the 1920s...GREAT TIME)! I listen to this cast album MORE than any other (and I have A LOT of cast albums)! Some of the MOST appealing tracks are "A Perfect Plan," "Coney Island" and "Step Into Their Shoes"! This would be A GREAT show for small theatres or small companies of actors! You'll be glad you bought this cast album after you take the time to listen to it all the way through at least once. You'll find a few songs you like and listen to those OVER and OVER. Two weeks later you'll find a few more songs you like and do the same! ... This is an A+ show!
Wonderful show with great music and lyrics.......2002-10-05
My family loved this show. Our eight year old son kept singing the songs and humming the tunes. He even wanted to listen to it at bedtime. Very catchy lyrics with tunes that keep your feet tapping. The show is full of songs that continually creep into your mind during the day. I often found myself humming a tune or two over and over. Highly recommend.

Album Description
Enter the Worship Circle: First Circle is a unique praise and worship album. While most such recordings contain covers of the worship standards, this album features all original songs written by 100 Portraits and Waterdeep . What's more, the songs were recorded live and unplugged, and the instrumentation is composed solely of the jangle of acoustic guitars and the rhythms of hand drums. The result is a worship album for those dismayed or uninterested in the grandiose production and operatic vocals of typical praise and worship albums. Enter the Worship Circle :First Circle has a sound that is open and free-form, beautiful as a well-laid plan, but spontaneous as a sincere declaration of love.

I Will Not Forget This CD!.......2006-06-06
This CD always makes it back into my CD player rotation. It is one of my favorite worship CDs for these reasons: it is raw but passionate and it is extremely catchy. Being a praise band, I have loved doing covers of I Will Not Forget You, You Are So Good to Me, You Have Redeemed My Soul, Tender Mercy, and I Could Run Away. These are some of the best praise songs of all time! This CD was recorded in a circle (thus the band name) and it is the best circle of the circles by far. I love the unique folksy songs and you can just picture the musicians playing in a circle with their eyes closed praising to the one true God above. Ben Pasley and Don Chaffer have written brilliant songs that will always find a place in my CD player. Only criticism is that the female vocals sometimes sound a bit whiny. But for the most part, everything sounds great and I wish there were more out their singing with such passion!
Awesome God Praise.......2004-11-02
100 Portraits and Waterdeep have an uncanny way of presenting music that sounds like something God would want to hear! They sing Psalms and praise in such a fresh and simple way. I just love this CD. The simplicity of the songs seems to enable a deeper connection to the Lord while I listen.
true worship that's simple and beautiful.......2003-02-07
'enter the worship circle' is a worship experience you don't want to miss! the lyrics are simple so you can catch on quickly. the music is simple [guitar, i think] and let's you focus on God rather than the music. the worship is so fresh and real that it just draws you in and encourages you to worship God. no fancy sound effects or instruments. there's also a booklet that gives you some advice on how to write your own worship music. it's an amazing cd :) a definite must-have!
Best Worship CD thus far..........2002-11-16
If you call yourself a Christian and have not at least heard this CD, you are truly missing out on real worship and intimacy with Jesus. 100 Portraits and Waterdeep have been absolutely filled with the Holy Spirit in the creation of this album. The songs are truly God breathed, coming from Divine inspiration. This CD will change your life! I cannot even begin to choose a favorite song...every single one is awesome! If you are really wanting to experience God in a way you never have before...get this CD! I recommend listening to it in your room alone; just let the words sing to your heart and you will have one of the greatest times in worship with our awesome Father. Just let God come and meet you half way....He wants to speak to you through this album!
Get ready to be inspired.......2002-02-27
I was so inspired by this album; the music, the emotion, the honesty and the simpleness of the rhythms and sounds. The instructions inside the jacket helped me to write many of my own songs. If you enjoy worshiping God, you'll enjoy this CD.

Buy this CD for her rendition of "He Never Said a Mumbalin' Word" alone --- truly lovely, simply brilliant.
Not traditional American Negro spirituals mostly........2005-10-24
If you are looking for the soulfull melodic or jubilation of traditional American Negro spirituals, this is not it. But it is masterful musicianship.
Great opera, not spiritual style I thought title suggested........2005-09-08
This is a very good classical collection. The rating would have been higher if the description had suggested the actual style of the music. I am giving it 3 stars because this is a very good OPERA style collection - not the spiritual style I was hoping for. Given the title and simple instruments, I thought it would be different - more relaxed. I wish a sample of the music had been available. If you want spirituals sung in an OPERA style you will love this. She is an amazing talent.
A Glorious Burgeoning Diva!.......2005-05-07
Though this particular selection of songs may not be one the recital lover would choose, MOSAIC introduces to the recording audience the magnificent voice of Angela M. Brown, a gifted singer whose career has been nurtured by appearances with small opera companies until her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in 'Aida' last year. Now this intelligent singer is currently replacing the indomitable Jessye Norman in a Detroit Opera premiere and even in that vulnerable position of comparison she is making a triumphant statement.
MOSAIC is pleasant enough recital of African American Spirituals with sensitive piano and guitar accompaniment. But it is in the few unaccompanied songs that the splendor of this very large voice with a seemingly bottomless register is best displayed. Brown has a glowing top as well as a lush bottom in her register and her attention to the control of the cascade of sound is simply thrilling. Brown knows this repertoire well and is convincing in her delivery of not only the message but the depth of emotion of each song.
Hopefully a recording of songs and arias will follow soon, especially as her opera reputation grows. But for now, MOSAIC is a fine introduction to a voice whose destiny seems assured. Grady Harp, May 05
Classical music with heart and soul.......2005-03-01
Daniel Alexander Payne, sixth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church worked tirelessly to purge emotionalism from African American modes of worship, and derided spirituals as "corn field ditties." Starting with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and into current century, composers such as Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Moses Hogan and Joseph Joubert have sought new, classical interpretations of these timeless, soulful songs.
I must confess, I've never been a big fan of classicised spirituals. Spirituals ARE emotional, expressions of unbearable pain, of longing, of optimism and ultimate belief in salvation. To strip them of that by prettying them up is to deny their very reason for being.
But having said all that: I absolutely loved MOSAIC! Angela Brown does not let her classical training get in the way of putting a song over with heart and soul. She obviously loves these songs, and her rich voice moved me to tears on several occasions. The instrumental accompaniments (Joseph Joubert on piano, Tyron Cooper on guitar) are gorgeously subtle and supportive.
The sound quality of this disc is superb, a fitting tribute to the many African American composers represented here. Highly recommended!

The debut album from Csokolom is bursting with festive dance tunes, haunting laments, and a recurring Gypsy influence. The shuffling fiddle and walking bass that kick off "Amari Szi, Amari" wouldn't be out of place in a Southern American string band, but when arranger-musician Anti von Klewitz comes in with her distinctive lilting voice we are transported to another land. While concentrating on traditional Hungarian instrumentals and songs such as the gorgeous gem "Szerelem," von Klewitz also leads this accomplished group of violin, viola, kontra (Hungarian chord violin), and double bass players through original songs in several languages. A solid grounding in traditional music informs the single four-hour session, during which most of the material was recorded, lending it an energetic cohesiveness. American listeners who have pricked up their ears for the sounds of the Hungarian band Muzsikas (with Marta Sebestyen) or Finland's Varttina will be pleased. --Peter Irvine

Hungarian music but not lyrics.......2000-03-06
With a title like Csokolom- Hungarian Fiddle music - at least half of the lyrics should have been in Hungarian but the music is still something I'd enjoy seeing live. Hope I find out about their next visit to NJ.
hair-raising!.......1999-08-24
just saw them in concert, bought the cd and have been playing it just about nonstop ever since. terrific energy, terrific variety. bravo to arhoolie for bringing this one out.
It was only okay........1999-07-12
I am really disappointed. I suppose if I was just exploring music from other countries, I might find it acceptable. But with Hungarian ancestory and a "purist" when it comes to this music, I found the "hungarian" part was almost non-existent.
5 Stars is not enough! This album is mesmerizing!.......1999-06-13
My husband bought this album on a whim a few months ago. Since then, it's rarely been out of our CD player, except when one of us sneaks it to work. It's a wonderful fusion of modern fiddle playing and Gypsy tunes, a combination of virtuoso jazz violin and music ethnography. Anti von Klewitz delivers an astonishing performance, singing in three different languages while she bows and plucks complicated rhythms and melodies on her violin. I can only imagine what a live performance must be like! The liner notes provide translations of the songs as well as brief comments on their origins. I was left panting for more and have since purchased other gypsy and fiddle albums, but they pale in comparison. I eagerly await Csokolom's next release, or I will have to make the trip to Europe to hear them live.
Amazing Hungarian Gipsy Fiddle Music.......1999-03-26
This trio of musicians produces the most hypnotic Gipsy fiddle music I've ever heard. The rhythms and language take you to an older time and an older place. The lead singer and lead violin player is a woman by the name of Anti von Klewitz. Her voice and melodic violin playing are standout and extraordinarily entrancing. She sings in Hungarian, Serbo-Croation and Rumanian. The trio is rounded out by a contra (chord) violin player, and a stand-up bass player. This is simply the best East-European style folk music I've ever heard.

Several Nice Melodies Here for those Who Enjoy 19th Century Song.......2006-04-02
The theme of this album is songs of social consciousness, which means that the compiler was looking for historical relevence, rather than overall good tunes. But there are at least two songs here that any fan of the 19th century popular song must have: "The Song of the Red Man," by Henry Clay Work, and "The Hand that Holds the Bread" by Root. Work's piece is simple, but driving and compelling, like all his best songs. The song by Root is just another fine, rousing melody by this exellent pop composer. Performance-wise, the soloists are a mixed bag, but they are sincere, and the chorus is superb throughout.

Customer Reviews:
Realmente o melhor.......2001-04-22
