A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Great sound track, very close to the sheet music, speedy shipping from seller, over all a very good transaction.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas.......2005-09-19

I saw the orginal broadway play. It was a fun show. The original broadway cast should have been the cast for the movie, but I digress. Carlly Glynn has a wonderful voice that puts you in the scene and makes you want to be there. It is an enjoyable cd. A lot of fun made of our "sins of the flesh" without being tacky. Great Fun!!!

1 out of 5 stars Songs are better than the movie, but the vocalists stink.......2003-11-19

I've always tried to find the Broadway version of movie musicals. I got this one at a used CD store. I liked the songs, including several that didn't make it into the movie, (sub-plots that wouldn't fit?). My complaint is the vocalists. I wouldn't mind if one or two were less-than-spectacular, but the whole cast? Miss Mona is shrill, the "watchdog" is flat, and the governor gargles! The music is interesting, but the vocals are a step below community theater. I'm going to look into the re-make recently released.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated score.......2002-08-28

Simply put, "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" is one of the most underrated scores in Broadway history. True, it doesn't have traditional, grand melodies like "My Fair Lady" or "The Sound of Music," but it does have wonderful songs that help advance the story of this unique musical. Every song in the score is hummable, and some are very lovely. Just because it wasn't nominated for a Tony for Best Score in 1979 (it was nominated for Best Musical and several others) doesn't mean it didn't deserve a nod. The score should've been on the list, and, in fact, did win two Drama Desk Awards the previous year when it played Off-Broadway.
This CD should be in everybody's original broadway cast collection. It's a true gem.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2002-03-10

Those of you who have read some of my other reviews probably think I'm a prude: I've complained about shows that throw in sexual material just for effect, and I've praised shows for omitting sexual innuendo. Well, you'll be surprised to learn that I enjoy listening to THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, which I'll call `BLWT' for short.

Why the apparent change of heart? From its title, you should expect this show to have the capability to offend. When you consider the potential coarseness of the subject matter, BLWT handles it quite tastefully. (Although there are plenty of scantily clad men and women in a few scenes, don't confuse the staged version with the more vulgar movie!) As long as you can suspend your objections to prostitution, and you don't mind rooting for the girls to keep their jobs, it really isn't that difficult of a show to digest.

That said, here are some more specifics on the show.

THE STORY:
The Chicken Ranch of Gilbert is a beloved institution in Texas. With a history harking back 80 years, it has served as a homey "pleasure palace" for the men of the Lone Star State, and is currently run by the no-nonsense Miss (not `Madam') Mona Stangley. Miss Mona runs a class act: the grounds are well-tended, her `Ladies' live under strict regulations, and the `Guests' are treated with the utmost respect and are expected to reciprocate.

Everything's fine until TV moralist `Watchdog' Melvin P. Thorpe declares a personal crusade against the Chicken Ranch. Despite the fact that "one-half of the police officers and two-thirds of the lawyers in the state of Texas grew up in this house," the political pressure mounts and the Ranch is eventually shut down. While others object, Mona just takes the bitter with the sweet and moves on.

THE MUSIC:
Carol Hall (best known for her music on SESAME STREET) has written a fun-loving score reflecting her Texas roots. Her lyrics reflect the low-key lifestyle of the citizens of Gilbert, from extolling the virtues of the Chicken Ranch ("20 Fans"), to Miss Mona's assistance to a lost girl ("Girl, You're a Woman"), to a town waitress wishing she were less respectable ("Doatsy Mae"). Two great upbeat numbers are "A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place," in which Mona explains the rules of the Ranch to her newest Ladies, and "The Sidestep," the governor's dance for the media. Perhaps best of all are three songs of the Chicken Ranch residents as they see the writing on the wall: "No Lies," "Hard Candy Christmas," and by far the best song of the show, Mona's reflection on how she ended up in her present situation, "The Bus From Amarillo."

The only song that's a real let-down is "Good Old Girl," the sheriff's paean to Miss Mona. It doesn't help that that Sheriff Ed (Henderson Forsythe) has a terrible voice.

THE RECORDING:
While none of the voices on the original cast are standouts, everyone's voice (except Forsythe's) is pleasant enough to listen to, and their acting abilities are fine. As Miss Mona, Carlin Glynn does an admirable job being a tough Texan while still showing compassion.

4 out of 5 stars Applause for Applause!.......2006-07-13

I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars Lauren Bacall !.......2005-07-09

Based on the classic movie "All About Eve", Lauren Bacall won a Tony for her performance in this great musical.

Best tracks include:

But Alive
Applause [Bonnie Franklin of "One Day At A Time" fame!]
Something Greater

Not all the songs are great, but totally worth the buy!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2004-04-01

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

3 out of 5 stars Welcome CD edition of the original Broadway cast album.......2004-01-17

First... a request to people reviewing stage cast albums, Several reviews refer to these recordings as "soundtracks."

WRONG!!!!

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

************

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

5 out of 5 stars lauren.......2003-12-04

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

4 out of 5 stars This is not quite the quality I thought it would be........2007-06-22

I have to admit, I'm not a huge RENT fan, but still some of the singing isn't the professional standard that I expected it to be. Perhaps the performers are as bored of this musical as I have become- and I feel that really transmits through the recording. Let me just say that RENT is a show to be seen not heard on a recording.

Having said all that, it is worth the investment, and does have most, if not all of my favourite songs. RENT perhaps has become a little overdone to me but I guess many of you out there may still appreciate this recording.

4 out of 5 stars Some important pieces missing.......2006-12-31

The first thing that struck me is that Benny's big number (You'll See) is missing, leaving Taye Diggs represented by only a few spoken lines. "Tango: Maureen" (though it was not one of my favorites to begin with) is also shorter than I remember from the movie.

But the most glaring omissions to me are "Over the Moon" and "Your Eyes"--after all, for Maureen and for Roger respectively, those compositions are the culminations of their artistic lives! And don't get me wrong, I love Stevie Wonder, but his remix of "Seasons of Love" added nothing for me to the beauty and grandeur of that pivotal song.

I am glad to have this, because I loved the movie and wanted the comparison--but maybe I should have waited til I had the money for the 2 CD set of the original Broadway cast...

2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

In November 2000, legendary director Hal Prince hosted 3hree, an evening of three one-act musicals, at his namesake theater in Philadelphia. It says a lot about Prince's clout that a cast album was released a few months later; it says even more about his unflagging taste that the pieces are so good. Laurence O'Keefe and Neil Dunbar Benjamin's "The Mice" is a darkly comic romp about a couple and its mice problems, while Robert Lindsey Nassif's "The Flight of the Lawnchair Man" is whimsical but never cloying. "Lavender Girl" is set in 1927, thus allowing John Bucchino (whose songs have been championed by Patti LuPone) to let loose with a great Charleston ("We've Got Time"). He also shines with the passionate ballads that are quickly becoming his calling card (though "Real Enough to Change My Mind" admittedly teeters on the brink of Disney territory). Overall, the CD is remarkably strong and will be a great pick for those who crave new musical-theater voices but cringe at Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel's lack of melodies. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Cute Three in one!.......2006-07-25

Ok So this is three one acts put into one show. The First "Mice" is ok. Pretty cute idea. The second, I can't remember the name of it, is probably the weakest, just not much substance. But the final one, "The Flight of the Lawnchair man" is really nice and is worth the 10 bucks alone. The Lyrics are quite clever in all the acts, but the music is definitly story telling, no amazing ballads here. My favorite song would have to be "Tiny."

4 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes, good subject matter.......2006-07-20

The Mice
---------

My favorite of the three, this is a story about an affair between an exterminator and the neglected wife of a tailor. The songs are particularly hilarious when dealing with the townfolks, and the music is incredibly bouncy, especially considering the (very dark) subject matter. Valerie Wright's (Virga) delivery in "That's All I Need" is wonderfully light, and John Scherer (Allan) is hilariously accommodating in "Mice!" These are some of the most clever lyrics you will hear, and the rhymes are wonderful. (I'm sorry, but rhyming "cyanide" and "pesticide" with "blushing bride" is just incredibly funny to me.) If you like the music from The Wild Party (LaChuisa), and Thoroughly Modern Millie, you'll probably like this piece as well.

Lavender Girl
---------------

I can't say much about the plot of this one without giving everything away. It's essentially about a very brief love affair. The music is adequate. The only piece that really gets stuck in my head is "We've Got Time." It's a wonderful homage to the '20s ballroom style, with lots of syncopation, swing, and harmonies. Again, we're in Thoroughly Modern Millie territory here. However, the rest of the act just doesn't stand up next to this particular number. Granted, the performances are great, but there just isn't enough material left in the plot to make one care, and it's just one ballad after another. I feel like adding just one more up-tempo song in here might have made this more complete.

Flight of the Lawnchair Man
------------------------------

I didn't realize until Mythbusters happened to do an episode about it, but apparently "Flight of the Lawnchair Man" is based on the true story of Larry Walters (a.k.a. Lawnchair Larry). Searching for him on Wikipedia will turn up the details of this "true urban legend." Despite this being "grounded" in reality, it's an awfully silly plot. The music is incredibly inconsistent, almost like the writer had a bunch of different musical themes lying around and decided to stick them together. We've got everything from Italian tarantella to Broadway-style kick-line. There are some truly awful lyrics in this one (particularly in "Genius" and "To Tame the Sky") such as:

"Once I tried to fly a sofa/Once I tried to fly a school"
and
"I'm the background/I'm like underwear"

Still, this absurdist (but apparently mostly true!) story (about a man who straps 400 helium-filled balloons to a lawn chair) is somehow transcendent, almost like a Shel Silverstein story. Fans of Joss Whedon's Firefly will probably identify with the sentiment of "The Air Is Free." If you liked Maury Yeston's Nine, and you happen to really enjoy numbers like "Hello Please" from Pacific Overtures, you'll probably like this show too. Everyone in the cast gets to shine with some sort of hilarity, and "Never Finish Before You Are Finished" steals the show, and makes up for the terrible lyrics in "Genius." Some sample great lyrics:

"I could have given up and landed inland, in Finland, and had a Finnish finish and been done"
and
"Better to last to the last and be last"

The puns just keep on flying. Get it? Flying? *groan*

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for the Lawnchair Man!.......2003-03-23

Stumbling upon the incredible BATBOY, I discovered this other gem with the only other Laurence O'Keefe musical on disc. Expecting to fall in love with O'Keefe's "The Mice", I found that the brilliance of composer Robert Lindsey Nassif about the story of a man who flies in a lawnchair. With catchy tunes by famous pilots - Amelia Aerhart, Charles Lindbergh - this show is jampacked with gorgeous ballads, funny and catchy upbeat sontgs and that extra bit of love to touch the heart.

It's worth it. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars You cant beat it........2003-01-01

All 3 show segments of this cd are equally fabulous. Beautiful melodies and clever lyrics and stories make this cd a joy to listen to. The cast is wonderful in their character interpretations and all have beautiful voices. I would have loved to see this live. Besides, what other show has a singing Amelia Earhart in it?

5 out of 5 stars The Musical Has a Future.......2002-01-01

Having grown up in New York in the '70's, I have since felt that the musical has not gone anywhere since the groundbreaking days of "Company" and "Follies" and subsequent Sondheim milestones. Nothing really exciting and new happened for years. Having just finished hearing "3hree" for the first time I must say that I am very optimistic about the future of the musical. Although I found Adam Guettel's "Myths and Hymns" awe-inspiring and Jason Robert Brown's "Songs for a New Word" exhiliratingly beautiful, neither of those shows had stories, and the same composers attempts at book musicals seemed less wonderful to me. "3hree" is made up of three genuine book musicals that are moving, exciting, original and intelligent. The songs tell stories that touch you and make you think. I am very excited about this CD and am looking forward to hearing it again and again. Each of the three musicals far surpasses "The Producers", which to judge by the CD, seems very familiar and unexciting. If you love musical theater definitely buy this! Hearing it has left me much encouraged at the prospective of the future of the musical. Between Adam Guettel, Jason Robert Brown, the writers of "Urinetown" and the writers of "3hree", I think we have a lot to look forward to in the next decade. There very well may be a renaissance of the musical. Stephen Sondhein, you are no longer alone.

4 out of 5 stars stunning studio album in creamy stereo.......2004-08-05

This studio album of Weill and Gershwin's LADY IN THE DARK features the lovely Rise Stevens making the role of Liza Elliott her own, with Adolph Green in the role that made Danny Kaye a star in the original production.

This sumptuous reissue on the Columbia 'Masterworks Heritage' label presents the recording in creamy stereo, with the orchestra under the baton of Lehman Engel. Rise Stevens is perhaps the best singer to have played Liza on any recording of LADY IN THE DARK. The trained opera singer lets her hair down for the manic "Saga of Jenny", and yields glowing versions of "My Ship" and "One Life to Live". Also featured among the cast are John Reardon and Stephanie Augustine.

My only qualm about the release is the horrid packaging. The disc is enclosed in a cardboard sleeve at the back of a booklet-style slipcase, leaving the CD vulnerable to scratches and dust (I remedied the problem by putting the CD in a separate plastic jewel case and filing it on the shelf next to the empty booklet case). However this should not deter collectors and musical theatre fans from seeking out this lovely recording.

    5 out of 5 stars STELLAR STAR!.......2003-01-03

MISS STEVENS shinesas Liza Eliot in this perfect recording of "Lady in the Dark". [For the first time - with repect to the other artists - the lyrics are pristine!] THE recording? IF you own a 'surround system' - this one IS flawless - just a perfect balance of voice and instrument. [A great restoration job - if only they could do the same to the Lawrence version....]

FOR the collector - get all three recordings currently available - the 1997 London version is the most complete, the Gertrude Lawrence? It's more of a Star Vehicle for Miss Lawrence - lots of dialogue - with really only the two "Liza' numbers - "Saga of Jenmny" and "My Ship" intact - but also well worth the journey.

AS A BONUS - Miss Stevens recording contains the Danny Kaye contribution missing from the Gertrude Lawrence recording - plus his versions of "My Ship" and "The Saga of Jenny".

4 out of 5 stars There IS a more complete recording. . ........2000-12-06

This recording is terrific, but for a more complete recording with much better quality, look for the Original Cast Recording from the Royal National Theatre Production. It's got all the bridging music which is phenomenal.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......1999-04-15

Until the definitive full version of the score comes out--with all the bridging material and orchestral interludes--this is probably the most complete of one of the greatest and most charming classic Broadway scores (and probably Ira Gershwin's masterpiece). Rise Stevens was born to play the part, and though at times she gets a bit excessive (especially in the dialogue) her voice is beautiful and confident (a high point is her counterpointing the chorus during "The Best Years of His Life"), and iat times really soars, as in "This is new." Adolph Green is hilarious--it's a great tragedy he never got to play this role on Broadway.

4 out of 5 stars A fun, if abbreviated, recording.......1999-04-02

A nifty performance of one of Broadway's classic scores. The biggest problem is that just about everything is slightly abridged (mostly verses, connecting material, dialogue underscoring and choral repeats--although if I'm reading the vocal score right, most of this would still be interesting to listen to); still, a reasonably good taste of the whole thing. The liner notes also don't really give a story synopsis, so if you aren't familiar with the plot, seek out a summary so you aren't completely confused by what is going on. Rise Stevens' acting is pretty mannered, and she goes over the top vocally every now and then; she seems to be shouting, not singing at the end of "Jenny." Adolph Green is hysterically funny and acquits himself supremely well in "Tchaikovsky." How you'll enjoy the appendix of Danny Kaye's recordings depends on how much you like Danny Kaye--enough said.

If you think that musicals are only outsize, outlandish spectacles hatched on Broadway, The It Girl deftly shows that there are other options. This small show was created in 2001 at the York Theater--located in a church's basement, it's as close as you get to a barn in New York City. Loosely based on the 1927 Clara Bow vehicle It, the show gleefully runs through all the 1920s classic situations and characters: chases, flappers, mistaken identities, a boat cruise, a department-store heir, and fake French accents—it's all there. You can almost hear the ghost of P.G. Wodehouse, librettist for the Gershwins' Jazz Age classics, cheering. The It Girl breezes through thanks to its cast's game can-do energy and the strength of Paul McKibbins and B.T. McNicholl's perky tunes, which deploy nice melodic resources and make the most of a six-piece band. There's enough knowing pastiche here to keep the saccharine at bay, but the creative team also shows genuine resource and love for musicals as a genre. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I took my daughter to see a production of this at a theatre in Hopewell where I sometime perform. We really enjoyed the show, and my daughter asked me to buy her a copy if the CD. I can't stop listening to this show. Great score...great orchestrations and great performances. I'm going to buy myself a copy too.

5 out of 5 stars This musical has IT!.......2005-04-14

Maybe I'm biased, because I'm friends with the composer... but I was not when I first saw this musical, and I fell in love with it. A truly toe-tapping score, and adorably witty lyrics. It's a charming gem of a show, and I recommend it to any music lover.

The characters are fun, the story is marvelously scandalous (in a family oriented way), and the performances are top-drawer!

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2003-05-18

Like another reviewer, was lucky enough to see this show at the York Theatre in Manhattan. A wonderful musical score and clever lyrics made this show an absolute delight. A must-have CD.

5 out of 5 stars This show is "How Do You Say...?" (Ah, yes) AMAZINGLY GREAT!.......2003-03-17

This show has a STELLAR cast! The cast is relatively small, only consisting of three men and four women. The music is original and REALLY clever (and based in the 1920s...GREAT TIME)! I listen to this cast album MORE than any other (and I have A LOT of cast albums)! Some of the MOST appealing tracks are "A Perfect Plan," "Coney Island" and "Step Into Their Shoes"! This would be A GREAT show for small theatres or small companies of actors! You'll be glad you bought this cast album after you take the time to listen to it all the way through at least once. You'll find a few songs you like and listen to those OVER and OVER. Two weeks later you'll find a few more songs you like and do the same! ... This is an A+ show!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful show with great music and lyrics.......2002-10-05

My family loved this show. Our eight year old son kept singing the songs and humming the tunes. He even wanted to listen to it at bedtime. Very catchy lyrics with tunes that keep your feet tapping. The show is full of songs that continually creep into your mind during the day. I often found myself humming a tune or two over and over. Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Lena never sounded better--this is a golden nugget shining brightly!.......2007-01-28

Lena Horne remains of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century. Lena possessed the ability to perform songs with such emotion that her audiences were truly moved. On this CD Lena's voice is strong, vibrant and smooth as silk. There may be only ten songs on this CD but what you get packs a punch!

The CD starts with "Moon River" which Lena sings so beautifully I instantly played it over again to enjoy it some more. Lena delivers "Moon River" with great sensitivity. "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" gives more proof of Lena's incomparable talent. "Hello Young Lovers" with its upbeat tempo and "Wives and Lovers" both sparkle with a certain energy that only Lena could communicate. Excellent!

Lena also performs a rather $eductive rendition of "Never On Sunday;" and Lena performs "Singing In The Rain" with an extra opening verse to make this number a real treat!

Ray Ellis provided the sharp and snazzy musical arrangements for most, if not all, the songs on this CD. His arrangements enhance the beauty of the songs just as they complement Lena's voice.

The liner notes offer the song credits. The liner notes also provide an informative but uncredited essay about Lena Horne and her career.

My only disappointment is that Curb Records almost consistently refuses to put more material on their CDs even when the CD has plenty of room for more songs. Yes, Lena sings ten songs on this CD; but the total running time clocks in at just under 30 minutes! Why couldn't Curb put two or even three more songs on this disc? This baffles me and so I must take off a star to make this a four star review.

I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals. Lena's fans will find no flaw in her performances on this CD. Unfortunately, however, the CD itself is short on running time. Therefore, if you like this Lena Horne CD I recommend other CDs by Lena including Lena Horne - RCA Victor: Greatest Hits; At the Waldorf Astoria/At the Sands and Stormy Weather: The Legendary Lena (1941-1958).

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely Lena.......2004-04-14

The title of this CD is off-base because these 10 songs do not represent the best of Lena Horne's vast catalog. This CD actually pulls songs from only two LPs Horne recorded for United Artists in the 1960's: "Feelin' Good" and "Lena In Hollywood". The good news is that these LPs featured some of her best vocals ever. Although the songs here were recorded when she was a splendid-looking forty-something, Horne was already morphing from cabaret vamp into the worldly, knowing chanteuse that would hit full bloom later in life. The songs here find her in outstanding voice and in full command of her interpretive gifts.

As one of the other reviews points out, the highlight here is Horne's take on WHO CAN I TURN TO -- a lushly orchestrated ballad, the song is a great showcase for Horne's unique mixture of pathos and rage. All of the ballads on this set are lovely and Horne sounds sweet as honey on MOON RIVER and ALL THE WAY. Her take on WIVES AND LOVERS is knowingly ironic, it almost sounds like she's spitting the words out in contempt, disgusted by the sexism in the lyrics. She kicks off NEVER ON A SUNDAY with a sassy spoken intro and she sings it as if through clenched teeth -- like she is doing all she can to keep from cursing someone out. I LOVE PARIS is simply gorgeous. In my opinion, Horne's voice is ideally-suited for uptempo numbers and the ones here do not disappoint. IT HAD BETTER BE TONIGHT is a brassy come-on that she sings so ferociously it is more frightening than titillating. She turns HELLO YOUNG LOVERS on its ear by revving up the tempo and belting the hell out of it. ON A WONDERFUL DAY LIKE TODAY is bouncy and exuberant. Given the price, I could recommend this CD as a nice introduction to Lena Horne's music.

    4 out of 5 stars Try It!.......2003-12-06

There are better Lena compilations, but this one contains two 5 star gems: "Moon River" and "Who Can I Turn To". In the 1960s every vocalist jumped on anything that was partially decent and there are hundreds of covers of "Who Can I Turn to", even Dusty Springfield recorded it, very expertly I might add. But Lena's vocal is very sad and complex, with a beautiful Ray Ellis arrangement. She sounds great on this CD. Nice Job!
