Customer Reviews:
The Double Trio hits the ground running........2007-05-21
King Crimson has historically been a band that's always been better live than on record, and the Double Trio lineup of the '90s in many ways exemplifies this. Consisting of two guitar trios (guitarists Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, bassists/stick players Tony Levin and Trey Gunn and drummers Bill Bruford and Pat Mastelotto-- essentially a fusion of the '80s Crimson and the Sylvian/Fripp touring band), it seems that in the studio there was a bit too much of a tendency towards restraint, but when spread out on a stage, the band was able to really cut loose and could be really overwhelming-- certainly it was for me, the first of four shows I saw of them nearly 12 years ago still stands out as the greatest rock concert I've ever seen.
In any event, after doing some studio recordings, Fripp and company hit the road, playing a series of shows in Argentina. "B'boom" is a compilation of these shows, showcasing some new material and reachign back into the band's catalog for some old. For a little over 100 minutes, this group, which was still not what they would be, tears it up.
Everything here is absolutely fantastic-- showcasing the muscular stances of the band ("VROOOM", "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part II") but also their flexibility ("Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream") and energy ("Indiscipline"). Along the way, there's fantastic readings of old favorites like "Frame by Frame", what may be the definitive takes on "Red" and "Heartbeat", the latter in particular, always a song that seems to be lacking, picks up an unexpected, noisy extra guitar part that really carries it.
Another note-- even a decade after its release as I write this review, I can't help but marvel at the sound of this recording-- crisp and clean and well balanced, loud and up front, all six instrumentalists can be distinctly and clearly heard. "B'boom" really set the standard for the live album.
Remarkable as this record is, I actually think it pales compared to where the band would be in a year or two, as illustrated by "VROOOM VROOOM", but there's a lot to love here. Highly recommended.
The King lives.......2007-02-08
The band's first live shows in ten years and the first to feature the Double Trio. This wasn't originally meant to be released however, due to bootleg versions being put out, Robert decided to release this after the fact. The show starts off with Vrooom from their newest ep and is quickly followed by Frame By Frame from 1981's Discipline. Next, we get another new song Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream performed as well as the earlier songs. Red comes blazing out in full glory. One Time is a pretty ballad from the Vrooom ep. B'Boom and Thrak are great instrumentals. Improv-Two Sticks features Tony Levin and Trey Gunn going at it big time. Elephant Talk and Indiscipline take us back to Discipline again. Vrooom Vrooom is another great new instrumental. Matte Kudasai is one of the most beautiful ballad played sweet. From here we go to the Larks album for The Talking Drum and Larks, Tongues In Aspic which rock out loud. Heartbeat starts with a beautiful introduction played by Robert Fripp. Sleepless is as always cool. We end the release with three new songs People, B'Boom(reprise), and Thrak. This is an excellent release and is a fine live album.
Get Heavy Construkction instead........2005-12-04
This is the first concert of this incarnation; as a result, they haven't really found their groove yet and are basically playing the straight versions of the songs. It's actually a very good record, nonetheless, but I can't recommend it given that Heavy Construkction provides much better live versions of most of the same songs and, unless you're simply a completist, there's not really any reason to have both.
excellent live disc.......2005-02-14
quick review just to say that this 2-disc set is amazing, and definitely worthy of a purchase by any fan of the mighty King Crimson.

Not for everyone..........2001-11-30
Okay, the more recent VROOOM VROOOM compilation probably gives a better look at what the "Double Trio" version of King Crimson was capable of; but this "official bootleg" is a snapshot of time. Specifically, it shows this band, a collection of overwhelmingly-skilled professionals, beginning to find its identity _as_ a band. Some of the playing is unaccustomedly sloppy for a King Crimson - which is to say, up to the higest standards set by most other bands. The repertoire is terrifying, both in the difficulty of some of the numbers and the sheer noise level of others. The first time I heard "THRAK" on disc 1 - which was the first time I ever heard "THRAK" at all, as I hadn't then picked up the Double Trio's studio work - I wasn't sure it was music; it went beyond dissonance to another place entirely.
The Crimson of the 1990s and early 2000s has reinvented the concept of heavy metal - not, please, "speed metal" (though there are some blinding solos on some tracks, and especially in the material introduced in the 2000 album "The ConstruKction of Light"), but dark, grinding, distorted slabs of metallic sound. Interspersed with this we find some of the gamelan-influenced pieces of the '80s Crim, a very few tracks from the "Lark's" band (including the heaviest piece of metal ever recorded, "Red"), and the simply funky new song, "People."
Unquestionably from the "not for everyone" department, but if you like this kind of thing you'll love "B'boom."

The Beginning of Soundscapes!!!.......2006-04-27
Robert Fripp's "1999" CD from 1994 was released during a time when the legendary guitarist was making a major comeback. King Crimson had returned after a decade-long absence and Fripp re-emerged with his first solo performances in almost as long. 1994 also marked the birth of Fripp's 'soundscaping' technique which was and still is an extension of his 'Frippertronic' experiments of the 1970's and '80's.
Instead of using two tape machines as had been the norm with 'Frippertronics', Soundscapes utilized digital technology and guitar-synthesizers to create and loop the endless mass of sound created by Fripp from his guitar. The idea was not a new one but the sound definitely was.
Unlike the later Soundscape albums which consist mostly of layered calm atmospheric sounds, "1999" mostly consists of giant crescendo-like pieces that begin from pure silence and slowly develop into harsh and sometimes abrasive frightening walls of sound. The opening two pieces (1999 and 2000) follow this manner and are quite unsettling and chilling. "2001" is a more calmer piece but still has the same principle as the first two tracks. "Interlude" is an edited piece from a longer performance and is quite experimental with its sounds which ping-pong between the speakers. Finally, to close the album, "2002" points the direction in which Fripp would eventually take his Soundscapes as it consists of beautiful ambient layered sounds.
"1999" has become somewhat difficult to find in recent years but if your a fan of King Crimson, Robert Fripp and Soundscapes, this CD is definitely a must. This was the beginning of a new Fripp trademark which continues to this day and displays him at his most experimental and most unpredictable.
Recommended!!!
Good performances........2005-05-17
"1999" is, if I'm not mistaken, the first album by Robert Fripp featuring solely his soundscapes performances (differentiated from Frippertronics as being a wholly digital experience whereas Frippertronics relied on tape loops). Essentially, it is Fripp, his guitar, a series of effects and looping equipment. It is not music that is for everyone-- for those familiar with Fripp's guitar work with King Crimson, this is not the sort of jaw dropping stuff he played with that band, instead it is similar to his work with Brian Eno-- in fact ambient music. In addition, it is wholly improvised, so all structure, implied or not, is spontanteous. And without such things as concrete melody, this music can often be extremely difficult to deal with.
Having stated that, "1999"-- five unedited live recordings from 1994 is a decent example of the form (though not the best-- I've reserve that for "A Blessing of Tears"). The music moves between dark and haunting ("1999"), horrific ("2000"), achingly beautiful ("2001"), meandering (the appropriately titled and fortunately only edited track on the record, "Interlude"), and gentle ("2002"). Remarkably, the only track I really dislike is the "Interlude", which comes closest to sounding like a guitar, the rest has an orchestral feel to it, the pure amount of noise generated at a minimum is pretty impressive.
If you're new to soundscapes, start with the easier to find "A Blessing of Tears", but if you're familiar with this work, track this one down, it is an interesting and rewarding release.
Set the controls for the heart of the sun.......2004-09-22
Its amazing just how moving these arhythmic, dissonant, dense and sometimes frightening electronic soundscapes can be. Truly awesome in every sense of the word. At high volume they're the soundtrack for religious epiphany or the creation of stars.
Not 'easy' listening.......2000-04-05
This set of works, recorded in concerts given by Fripp in Argentina, are a real challenge to most listeners expecting the sort of ambience found on his collaborations with Brian Eno, or his loop-based 'Frippertronics' experiments of the 1970s and 80s. This has less in common with conventional guitar music than it does with dense, dissonant, and tense sound-mass works by composers such as Penderecki or Ligeti. It's space music, perhaps...but not a tranquil space; rather, this evokes something of a musical setting for the primordial ylem, with all of the chaos and cosmic tension of that early period of the universe. Not for unadventurous ears. Docked one star for the ending of the CD, which sounds as if the work in progress was just snip-edited, where there was much more to go on it. If this is how the piece stopped, I would be very surprised; it sounds more like an editing mistake.
Try it, it won't hurt!.......2000-03-27
A previous review states this might be scary if you're too shallow to hack it. Well I love Fripp's work because it CAN be scary! This album draws you in through soothing soundscapes which Fripp builds up with truly disturbing effects. A listening experience which can leave you surprisingly emotionally drained, you might want to play something a little more conventional afterwards so you can relax! If you do have a "fear of music" you may not wish to tread down this path!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Live Album.......2006-12-05
I saw the Skatalites live in Richmond, and this CD recreates the experience quite well. Although the audience mostly stood idly watching the band (NOT good manners in a ska show) we had a nice little skank pit in the front.
Anyways, this CD is very well mixed and the sound quality is very high. Sounds almost like a studio album, except there is vocal audience.
This CD has mostly enjoyable tracks (especially Freedom Sounds, James Bond, Guns of Navarone, Real Rock/Rockfort Rock Medley, and You're Wondering Now).
I like them all though.
This is the only Skatalites album I own so I doubt it is their best, but I enjoy it highly and listen to it frequently.

Great sound quality. Piercing violin play.......2006-07-08
Of all the Piazzolla album I have, this is possibly the best recorded one. The instruments literally jump at your face. Audiophiles might consider this album on the bright side, but it works really well for this live concert album. The players were all excellent, as usual. The violin, in particular, sends a shiver down your spine. Yo-Yo Ma once said that no one can listen to Piazzolla without weeping. There's no better example than this album.
Also, Piazzolla's little speech at the end of disc 1 is a nice touch, and brought me even closer to his music. All in all, if you're a Piazzolla fan, get this.

Double CD Set Recorded Live in Argentina.
Customer Reviews:
All grown up NOW!.......1999-03-11
This album is a must have, along with Thrak, Thrakattak and Vrooom. Now free of a bad contract Fripp and gang have taken their writing and musicianship to the next level. Keep in mind that Indiscipline and Elephant Talk were written over twenty five years ago and have never sounded this powerful. This new double trio brings this music to a point so far removed from the original recordings as to make earlier albums nearly obsolete. The sound quality is excellent and the forcfulness of the newer compositions is breathtaking. I had the good fortune to see them on this tour and was completly floored. Having not seen the band since the early seventies it was quite a shock. Red is probably the song that most benefitted from this newer lineup and it's more recent cousins Vrooom, Thrak and B'boom will blow you away. There is a video from this tour available, recorded live in Japan, that I highly recommend. Also, I think a second video will be available shortly. Yes, there is still some of the beautiful dreamy sounds of the seventies but buy this album for the maturity of the band and the power of the music. PLAY IT LOUD!
A very powerful desmostration of wath they can do.......1998-12-10
This records shows the most important qualyties of this "not just fripp" band. You can check all the Adrian's guitar madness in, for example, the Elephant Talk solo, and the very impressive combination of the Mark Warr Guitar's Style of Trey Gunn with the "hey, here i'am" of Tony Levin (just take a look at Vroom Vroom's interlude before the income of the guitars). Drummers can't get down of all this enegy. Bruford and Mastelloto show a sinergy that not anyone may. I really enjoyed the Elephant Talk Intro, performed in a way that " how i'd liked to be there that night". But we're just humans, and our chance to dream is listening this CD.

Customer Reviews:
For Thomas Lang listeners!!!.......2003-12-18
I certainly would recommend this for anyone looking for a definitive piece of work on Thomas Lang. Being a drummer listening to his performance and solo is riveting. The drum mix is clean and not over produced, which is refreshing in this day and age. The CD sounds like it was recorded in a club with no heavy editing. Check it out!!!! The solo alone justifies the price if you ever saw Lang play.

Tango dilettante.......2003-07-23
I really love this two CD set of tangos. This is emotional music- exuberant, often bittersweet, and ultimately triumphant.Be prepared for the dissonances of Piazzola. There is great variety of substance and style. All the works are performed by small ensembles or solo instruments, conveying the intimacy lacking in some orchestral versions. I have other recordings of tango but this is among the best with very good sound quality.
A very interesting abridgment of argentine tango.......2000-12-25
Please, excuse me if I'm not writting in a perfect english... is not my native language! I'm not using spanish because I wish to make able to more people in the world my advice about this record. I think it's a good compilation of tango, very usefull for anybody who wants to begin to know this kind of music. You can find Carlos Gardel's classics and the fascinating compositions of Astor Piazzola too. There are instrumental works and others with singers cleverly choosed for each tango.
Is one of my favorites as a gift to foreigners (I'm from Argentina) If you want to introduce yourself or a friend on this exotic and exciting music of my country... maybe you could try to begin with this record. I wish you enjoy it!
