On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John Simmons

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-04-25

These two really sound good together. If you're not so impressed with the music when you first hear it (I don't know if that's possible), check out the DVD that comes with it. You will gain such an appreciation for the music that's being played. Watch out for the guy making the banjo jokes. This CD is really an incredible work, I can't say it enough. Very relaxing music.

4 out of 5 stars Broad Spectrum Virtuosity.......2007-04-23

This album runs the gamut of styles and genre. It is hard to get bored when a musical turn is but a few notes away. The two musicians integrate their instruments with incredible skill. I hate to give it a four star rating. The music is worth the 5. The loooooong, live applause tracks detract from the album. The asides by the musicians are sometimes hard to hear. Minor aggravations aside, this album plays frequently, very frequently, in our home, car, iPods, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Pairing for Meyer/Fleck Fans.......2007-01-02

I've seen both Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck live (unfortunately not together) and I really think this album just captures the magic of their live shows: I can almost see them in my living room together! For those not so familiar with the music of one or both the inclusion of classical tunes with those composed by Meyer/Fleck and other contemporary songwriters is a cool drink of water. Music for Two is a good intro to the world of cozy bluegrass.

5 out of 5 stars Bela Fleck + Edgar Meyer = strange mixture .......2006-11-10

Bela Fleck is one of the my jazz favorites... And hi with combination called Edgar Meyer are... great music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosity Knows No Musical Boundaries.......2006-10-22

Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer are both extraordinarily accomplished musicians who spend much of their time in very different worlds: Fleck in his newgrass space and Meyer in a more classical mode. But each has travelled in the other's territory before, and on this CD they connect around more genres than you can shake a stick at. In addition to their own compositions they tackle many of their joint favorites. The affection shows in the passion of the playing and the obvious camaraderie. And the accompanying DVD is a treat. Don't miss this one.

Album Description

After riding the worldwide pop music charts for over a decade, Manfred Mann created an even larger chapter in rock music history with his Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Created at the height of album rock radio, Manfred Mann's Earth Band landed their first three albums on the charts as they increased their loyal following throughout concert halls in the United States. 1974 proved to be a pivotal year for the band as they released their biggest selling album at that time with Solar Fire. Originally released in the States with the international hit single "Joybringer" (based around Holst's Planets Suite), this album has stood the test of time and is regarded as one of the band's strongest efforts ever.

Aside from the thematic approach of rocking tracks like the title song "Solar Fire" and "Darkness, From The Beginning", this album really gained a whole new audience with the epic Bob Dylan remake of "Father Of Day, Father Of Night." This ten-minute anthem would go on to be one of Mann's most respected and most articulate works of this era. The fans dug it and have gone on to make this album one of their most enduring of the Manfred Mann's Earth Band diverse catalog.

By popular demand, Friday Music's good friends at Creature Music are proud to present another installment in the Manfred Mann's Earth Band Re-Masters series with the classic Solar Fire. Originally released on Polydor in 1974, this amazing album hasn't seen the light of day in North America for many years until now. Aside from the great songs that you already know, Manfred has gone back into the vaults and found an unreleased alternate 45 edit of "Father Of Day, Father Of Night", as well as the aforementioned international hit single of "Joybringer" which was never featured on the European vinyl release. As always, Mann and Creature Music team have overseen the entire process of remastering the original recordings and artwork restoration, maintaining the importance of this timeless classic and the other CD's in this exclusive series. As you will hear with this following recording, this was the start of something big for Mann & Company as decades of million sellers and hit recordings would follow the lead created by the fantastic Solar Fire.

5 out of 5 stars Replacing my well-worn vinyl copy.......2006-06-07

Despite the long delay and higher price, I went ahead and ordered this from Amazon so I can replace the record I have had since I was in college. I don't know why Joybringer is listed as a "bonus track" when it was included on the original LP, but as long as it's on the CD I'll be happy. I can't recommend this music highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars a timeless classic.......2006-05-07

I just recently repurchased this album, and I am absolutely thrilled with the great sounds on it. When I was a kid back in 74 I used to love it, but then it disappeared, like so many things... The musicianship is great, every song develops into great musical expression, interesting guitar and organwork, phantastic. I am sometimes reminded of Gentle Giants contemporary music. Get it if you see it.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated and forgotten but great music.......2005-10-11

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, This is agreat album. The Dylan cover Father,,, is worth all the space it takes up and Circle, Pluto, the title track and most of all Joybringer are classic. Manfred Mann might have better songs in his bag but no better album than this one.

4 out of 5 stars An overlooked prog album of considerable quality.......2004-11-30

A fine 1974 progressive rock album loosely, pretentiously and comically echoing Holst's Planets Suite. I recommend to fans of the ilk and era.

Ruben Blades puts in a dynamic performance, recorded in New York, that shows why he is known foremost as a singer rather than a film star or politician. The native Panamanian has a distinctive take on Salsa, combining an innate jazz sensibility along with Salsa's inherent dance grooves. His band Son del Solar is one of the best in the business, following Blade's warm and personal vocals through every move with some great solos and arrangements. Several of his successes are featured, such as "Pedro Navaja" and "Todos Vuelven," and "Muevete" gets a scintillating 12-minute workout. With a little Caribbean influence in the mix, Live delivers a smooth punch with a velvet glove that will definitely rock you. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Not a huge salsa fan but this is a touchstone.......2006-09-04

I have not been put on this planet to celebrate pan-Hispanic culture, but what can I say? This collection of toons makes my teeth sweat. The power of the vibe here is nuclear, I kid you not.

Ruben's output over the years has been patchy from where I sit, but he makes not a wrong move in this collection. The Son del Solar are gods one and all.

Buy this platter and feel the power.

5 out of 5 stars RUBEN'S BEST WORK........2004-12-30

ALTHOUGH NOT THE FIRST ALBUM I OWNED OF RUBEN, CERTAINLY THIS ONE COMBINES HIS POWERFUL MESSAGES WITH ONE HELL OF A PERFORMANCE BY THE BAND. THE ADRENALINE STARTS PUMPING FROM THE FIRST SONG AND LEAVES YOU DANCING AND WANTING MORE BY THE END OF THE NIGHT. IF YOU OWN JUST ONE RUBEN BLADES CD, THIS ONE IS IT. BTW, the first time I bought this cd, some of the tracks didn't play well on ANY cd player. I noticed that only a partial album is available at i-Tunes and that the same songs that gave me trouble are the ones missing from their list too... maybe mine wasn't the only bad copy out there

5 out of 5 stars Ruben Blades and Son de Solar Live!.......2003-08-11

Ruben Blades and Son de Solar's Live! is a refulgent live album. I have the tape version containing an extra track on it-Patria. Son de Solar sounded remarkably well. It is not surprising since Son de Solar is one of the best concomitant bands Blades can have: Marc Quiñones and Izbarra-I misspelled his name but nevertheless one of the best timbaleros in Latin jazz-taking care of the rhythm section.

Live! segues through most of Blades' Elektra -post- FANIA days repertoire starting with Decisiones and with the denouement of laudatory live renditions of Patria- cassette version only- and Muevete. The latter is a Los Van Van song showing Blades' openness to the seemingly modern and `electric' Cuban rumba. Blades' sonero voice is timeless as usual. The downside is that Live! seems to come up short and that might be explained because it is missing FANIA classics- except for Pedro Navaja. Notwithstanding, even without the FANIA classics, this album is filled with worth post-FANIA exemplars.

5 out of 5 stars El poder de la letra.......2001-10-03

Virgilio Krumbacher

5 out of 5 stars great!.......2001-04-05

Captures his unique brand of salsa. The "Decisiones" alone is worth the price of admission to this gig. Ruben Blades is a PANAMANIAN!!

3 out of 5 stars Some Difference from Hotel Costes 6.......2004-01-01

I ordered this CD after seeing 5 star reviews at amazon.
It very well may simply be a matter of preferences, but I would definitely rate Hotel Costes 6, also compiled by Stephane Pompougnac, as excellent and worthly of 5 stars. However, in comparison, the Saks Fifth Avenue sound is not quite the same, with the exception of a few songs of the same flavour. This could have been intentional to differentiate it from the Hotel Costes series.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Milk Chocolate.......2003-11-12

Picture this: driving down the road in a convertable on a sunny fall day. The wind is rushing through your hair, and the temp is perfect enough to be wearing a light sweater. To the left you see the ocean, and you get a big ol' smile on your face. That's what listening to this CD is like. Far better than the previous Costes albums (which, if you know them, is saying TONS), this album delivers on all fronts. Not only does it present seemless jazz tunes with full vocals (track 4's "hoping"), but it also let's you get funky on more than one occasion. This is the definitive collection of electro-jazz-blah blah blah... get it! And yes, it's kind of cheesy that it's marketed through a department store, but who cares... you can't see the cover when it's playing in your convertable!

    5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2003-07-17

Well, I am a HUGE fan of Stephane Pompougnac and this album is, in my opinion, fantastic, just like the costes series. He doesn't disappoint. I especially love tracks 5-8, but really all the tracks are good, and different in their own way. Way cool!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection in the Costes Tradition.......2003-07-01

Ruben Blades and the innovative group Seis del Solar delivered something very special with this album. The spirit of Buscando America ("Looking for America") is defined by a restless, searching attitude and a willingness to struggle with deep issues and to confront painful parts of life with strength and resolve. This is a groundbreaking work that adapts global influences, such as the doo-wop intro to "Decisiones" and the reggae underpinnings of "Desapariciones," into a cohesive and powerful musical vision of what Latin American music can be. It engages the mind, touches the heart, and definitely provokes the dancing feet. Even if you don't understand Spanish, the vocals will grab you, and before they let you go, you just might find yourself inspired to learn the language so that you can understand Blades's profound poetry. --Jeff Grubb

    5 out of 5 stars Viva Panama!.......2003-11-11

Y'know, I was fortunate enough to visit Panama for my Honeymoon. We vacationed for about 3 weeks throughout this luscious isthmian oasis.

My (now) ex-wife is from Da Bronx NY via Colon, Panama.
I was completely in-love w/ her... and Oh, what a knockout!
So it's no surprise that I became deeply interested (and ultimately patriotic) with her homeland.
I was THE honorary (gringo) Panamanian for awhile>ha! ha!
It's a truly beautiful country and they've offered so much to this planet's growth & progress on many levels.
For hours at a time, she & I would listen to old Fania records together... Of course she loves Ruben!

I must also mention how my Dad turned me onto Mr. Blades back in the day. As a young musician, he directed me towards the intricate (yet flowing) arrangements, cascading (yet memorable) melodies and very thoughtful (and politically right-down-my-alley) lyrics of Ruben & his worthy constituents.
Alone one night in NYC, when dashing back to the bar at a Gilberto Gil concert, I ran into Ruben. He was simply sitting there talking to a few friends. I was nervous, yet poised to talk to him. I explained how I felt about his music and politics. We had a very cool chat...What a genuinely NICE GUY!!! :-) Feeling guilty, I got his autograph for my (then) wife. She was pretty envious of my experience.

Now, I know what y'all are thinking --
There isn't a whole lotta continuity in this post of mine. But hey, I'm just reflecting on some vivid thoughts. Memories of a man I greatly admire, whose music will forever remind me of the woman I cared so much about...
This I celebrate, singing and dancing the tears away.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant except for 2 cuts.......2001-12-13

Buscando America - the title cut is just absolutely amazing. It literally brings tears to my eyes sometimes when I hear it. And I don't even speak the language. So I apologize if i'm missing some of the beauty in the lyrics. I'm coming at it purely for the music, arrangements, and emotion. The music is just brilliant and the singing is emotional and evocative. I'd probably ball like a baby if I could speak the language.

Padre Antonio Y... is a great cut as well. Some of the music (on the album) is extremely sophisticated and particularly engaging.

Cuts #2, and #3 don't really turn me on that much but all the rest are great stuff. That's the reason for the 4 stars rather than 5. But still... Highly recommended

    5 out of 5 stars excelente.......2001-08-29

5 out of 5 stars un reflejo de nuestra tierra.......2000-12-07

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the other worlds journey.......2006-12-11

This is incredibly good. I stumbled on this album today and bought it as a used CD at the local shop. Played it, and it blew me away. Brilliant lyrics, wonderful chord progressions, driving percussion, mystic sounds of India. The songs could be played as a guitar band, or the way Solar Twins play it. Doesn't matter because it's brilliant material, enchantingly delivered. What a stoner of an album!

    5 out of 5 stars My god.......2005-11-04

Simply put. One of the best albums out there. Beautiful, poetic mixture of pop, drum and bass, and amazing female vocals.

    5 out of 5 stars Addicting.......2005-10-25

Once you start listening to Solar Twins you won't be able to stop and you'll be begging for more. The music is relaxing but upbeat... and tends to put me in an exhilarated/ happy mood. The female singer's voice is beautiful to listen to and the music is artfully mixed. I've seen people compare Solar Twins to Delerium and I think it's a good comparison. I would describe the music as electronic/ futuristic sounding but not terribly technoish. It has a relatively slow pace; therefore, it's very peaceful sounding. I guess that's the best I can describe it without making an essay. Good music is hard to put into real words ;) Buy it and you'll find out.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly fabulous.......2004-06-08

Got this CD a week ago and I can't stop listening to it - and it keeps getting better!! Every song, except for #6 Living your Dream, grows so much so that you find yourself wanting to hear it all the time: in line at the market, in a meeting at work, etc. Living your dream is a bit too poppy for me, but all the others.... absolutely amazing. I HIGHLY recommend this cd if you like Balligomingo and Delerium. You can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Energetic, uplifting, and oh-so-ethereal.......2003-05-26

This is a beautiful disc! It's floaty and ethereal while being held down by the great percussion and electronic sound. As others have put, it's very Ray-of-Light-esque, which is probably part of why I like it so much. Her voice is fabulous, and his electronics wizardry is excellent-- a great combination of what I assume is a brother and sister working together (they do look like they could be twins). The only thing I didn't like much is his voice on the parts that he sings. Overall, a thrillingly evocative and fast-paced but light chunk-o'-sound. I was hooked the first time I heard "Earthbound" and "Nightfall"--excellent songwriting, great lyrics, and catchy, catchy melodies. A form of "liquid electronica", this is an exciting departure from most traditional sounds. Why this isn't getting great airplay worldwide, I have no idea--everyone, from pop fans to lovers of rock should find something to enjoy here. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

5 out of 5 stars mack of tha 97.......2004-11-14

E-MACK IS THAT TRUE CLASSIC GANGSTA RAPPER!! I can really relate ta what he sayin in tha title track "16 minutes with an O.G." His beats are just BANGIN UP THA PLACE! and he has hella tight lyrics. I heard E Mack 7 off of a track called "rovolutionary ridaz" from a rapper named Reality. I really felt the verse he spit, so I decided ta check his solo. MAN was I impressed. best tracks to me: "I need a bird", "Visions of death", 16 minutes wit an O.G.","Sucka Free" and " Mind blowin" everything is great all and all, so do yourself a favor( even though he says there ain't none) and pick up the mack cause he is str8 BANGIN!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best in a long while..........2007-05-11

I am a trance DJ and basically spend vast amounts of my life listening to and mixing Trance and Prog House, and over the years I have had a few Solar Stone mixes/remixes cross my path and I always had a mental note that they seemed to align with my taste in music, which is progressive and euphoric electronic dance music. I randomly picked this up without any recommendations and I have to say that this has been in my stereo at home for the past month non-stop, almost exclusively. Very solid throughout both CD's. Seriously enjoyable! I am so sick of buying mix after mix of the big guys and liking only 2 or 3 songs out of a 2-CD mix!!! It is refreshing to see that at least some DJ's out there haven't sold out and are maintaining their musical integrity to play songs they actually enjoy rather than songs their label tells them to play. If you like this, I also recommend: Anjunabeats: "Vol 1","Vol 2","Vol 3",& "Vol 4", "Anjunabeats Worldwide", and soon to be released: "Anjunabeats Vol 5", "Mondo Sessions 001" Mixed by Darren Tate and Mike Koglin (AMAZING!!!), Ferry Corsten's "Passport: Kingdom of the Netherlands" and Armin van Buuren Yearmix 2006. In my opinion, these are the absolute best trance collections put out in the past 5 years.

    5 out of 5 stars a melodic mix.......2007-01-06

nicely mixed, every track sounds good and blends well with the others. this cd was on sale, and ended up being a really good deal.

    1 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2006-11-20

This is a shining example of why I hate continuous mixes.

In order for the songs to 'flow' well from one song to the next, they are blended so the distinction between the two is hardly noticed. In effect, each song loses its individuality--the moment the song starts to emerge without being poisoned from the last or upcoming track only lasts for a minute, if even that. The blending between the two songs was the worst; it's like taking two tracks that hardly match up, taking the vague beginning of one and the vague ending of the other, and putting them together for a generic and boring trance sound.

Sure, there were some great songs on this album: The Loves We Lost, Clockwork, Waterfall, Killa, Tundra, Mahananda, the list goes on, but the uniqueness of each one was lost to the hideous blending with other songs. Sure, it was uplifting, but in a boring way.

If you're wanting this album for a specific song, get the single of the song or the album it was pulled from. If you want this for the long mix, forget it; it's too boring.

4 out of 5 stars Solar stone destinations.......2006-11-11

Fantastic trance album. Dance music has been a bit tedious of late but this double cd album has been a breath of fresh air. Particularly like the final track by Solar Stone. Keep replaying it all the time. Good for those serious chill-out moments.
