It is a perilous proposition when genres clash--and no such collaboration is more potentially fraught than when improvisation-trained folk musicians sit in with Western classical instrumentalists, who are taught to interpret a printed score. The renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted much of his professional life to such intercultural experiments. But the traditions of nations situated along the ancient Silk Road, which began in the Far East, meandered through Asia and terminated in Europe, are especially dear to him. These lushly arranged pieces range from moody scenic vistas to percussive Turkish hip-shakers and they make very pleasant listening. If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. And nobody is more of a team player than Maestro Ma, an impassioned, fearless musical seeker and a gracious, deferential colleague. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars delightful experience.......2007-07-04

this collection of music is quite a cultural experience. I've been hooked since I opened the cover!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20

I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23

Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.

Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent!!!.......2006-01-15

One of the best concerts I attended in my life (so far... :-)...)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best !.......2005-12-06

This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

Amazon.com essential recording

This vocal recital certainly lives up to its title, perhaps too well. It's a collection of arias and songs Fleming has sung for years that for some may be too much frosting and not enough cake. Surely, her performances are rich with interpretive nuances, wonder-filled portamentos and word colorings that reflect a long history with this repertoire, which ranges from Charpentier's "Depuis le jour" to Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise." Some may find Fleming a bit much, but agree with her or not, she's far more interesting than singers who keep a safe, discreet distance from the music. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best........2007-04-11

I've given away at least a dozen copies of this CD. I'm running low, so I just refilled the stash. For people who haven't discovered Renee Fleming or who think they don't care for opera, this CD is the best possible way to blow down the walls. If you think there's nothing new to be heard in these old arias, you owe it to yourself to find out how wrong you can be.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and creamy voice.......2006-02-28

I like so much Ren?e Fleming and this is special cd !

5 out of 5 stars Renee Fleming;THE BEAUTIFUL VOICE.......2006-01-30

IT'S A FINE RECORDING THAT OFFERS A VARIETY OF SELECTIONS FROM OPERA, OPERETTAS AND FOLK SONGS, ALL WITH FLEMING AT HER BEST.

5 out of 5 stars The most gorgeous soprano voice I've ever heard.......2006-01-02

I am a 19-year-old voice student at the University of Central Arkansas and I came across Renee by way of a soprano in my voice studio. She said it was her favorite soprano and that I should give her a listen. I was a little hesistant because I'm a baritone and my voice teacher told me that I should listen to men, but I just want to hear it all. So this past summer I first bought Renee's self-titled album with all of the lolipop arias on it and I was just amazed, not just because of how good she is but how easy she is to listen to. I loved her voice immediately. From the the moment the first tone passed through her throat on Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro." So I had to hear more. The Beautiful Voice is even better. It wasn't as easy to listen to at first because some of the songs on this album are not as famous as those on the other one, but these songs are all gems. The Korngold with the pianissimi B flats is my personal favorite. Even my mother who screams at me to turn down that "noise" when I listen to opera cds has grown to be quite fond of Renee Fleming. Sometimes her interpretations can be over the top, but the voice is beyond spectacular. It pours out like melted butter. It's vibrant, rich, expressive, free and always perfectly in tune. There is no hint of strain from any sound emitted from her body. She will undoubtedly be remembered like Callas & Sutherland and all the other great soprano voices before her. Not for the dramatic intensity of Callas or the coloratura & technical ease of Sutherland, but for the sheer unspeakable beauty of her voice. This is a must have for any vocalist seriously dedicated to classical training.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2005-09-28

This album is the album that introduced me to Renee Fleming. Every selection on this recording is a gem. Her voice is so gorgeous and her technique is so solid. I love her voice so much, her interpretations of J. Strauss, Jr.'s Csardas is incredible and Puccini's Chi il bel sogno di Doretta makes me cry everytime I listen to it. She is a true American treasure. Brava Renee!!!

Beautiful music. It sets a mood throughout that is rather sad no matter what the words say.

    5 out of 5 stars A beautiful achievement .......2006-02-25

The excelent Milos Forman timepiece on the 20's based on the Doctorow novel has a marvelous musical translation in this soundtrack close to perfection. It gets the time and mood of the movie, and reflects its main dramatic moments. I would dare to say that this soundtrack is one of the finest coming out from a movie of the 80's. Besides, it sounds great in this digitally remastered version. Do not hesitate to get it. It's a real beauty.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant........2005-12-28

I first came across this soundtrack when looking for Donald O'Connor songs - I'm a big fan of his, and I'm trying to track down all the songs he's ever recorded. It just so happens he has one of the most delightful songs on this soundtrack, "I could love a Million Girls". Apparently it's from a Disney film called Summer Magic, but I don't think Disney would approve of how dirty this song is if you think about it! Donald O'Connor was around 55 or so when he recorded this song, so his voice isn't as great as it was once, but he still does a fantastic job.

Now, onto the other songs. "Ragtime" (the song listed on the soundtrack) is hauntingly beautiful - it really captures the feeling and mood of the time, and puts you right back there. Same with most of the other "score" tracks. This is definately one of the best scores out there, and it's a pity it didn't do better. I guess it's almost ahead of it's time a little, considering this was the time period that gave us films like The Blues Brothers and other such early SNL comedies which didn't require scores like Ragtime needed. It really should've done better, but for now enjoy the soundtrack because I doubt you'll get another release of it!

Singer-songwriter Joe Jackson may have ridden the contentious nerve of late-1970s new wave to his first chart triumphs, but he quickly proved he was no slave to fashion. Even earlier than Elvis Costello, Jackson utilized his commercial clout to explore a diverse, idiosyncratic musical palette that ranged from swing through reggae, Tin Pan Alley, and classical. Having seemingly forsaken pop songs altogether in the '90s for larger classically themed set pieces, this live recording of Jackson performing songs in peak form with a stripped-down trio (including Graham Maby on bass and drummer Gary Burke) should come as something of a pleasant surprise for Jackson fans. Imbued with a healthy dose of the singer's trademark musical utopianism, the set list is characterized by smart renditions of vintage, if not overexposed Jackson catalog gems, several of which are interpolated in medleys with a generous sampling of cover songs that are often as surprising as they are insightful. Paired with the Yardbirds' moody "For Your Love," "Fools in Love" becomes a bluesy dirge, while Steely Dan's "King of the World" neatly bookends Jackson's "You Can't Get What You Want" both musically and thematically. It's also a record that should smartly segue into Jackson's anticipated sequel to his biggest (and best) pop/jazz fusion success, Night and Day. --Jerry McCulley

"Look Sharp" and "I'm The Man" say it all for Joe Jackson. After these gems he went the same way as Elvis Costello did(who both were born same day- same year). Downhill. They sold out. But, regardless, this disc holds its own. I'ts worth the money.

This is an album that you will grow to love. Recorded live in 1999 it features Joe Jackson on Piano and Vocals with Bass and Drums being his only support. In this format Jackson shows how underrated he is. Although he was initially successful during the Punk/New Wave movement of the late 70's, Jackson is in fact a schooled musician who studied at the Royal Academy Music.

He performs a mixture of some of his best songs, along with some interesting covers, such as "The In Crowd" (an instrumental hit for Ramsey Lewis in the 60's) and "Eleanor Rigby". Its all done with the passion and vigour we've come to expect from Jackson and I would have loved to have been there.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "SUMMER IN THE CITY".......2006-09-12

This is an absolutely great live performance. I generally shy away from concert CD's, because most artist tend to disappoint when recorded outside the studio. However, Joe Jackson is almost magical when performing live. I was fortunate enough to see his concert at the 9:30 club in Washington DC. recently and I can say that it was probably the most enjoyable concert that I have attended. "Summer In The City" is simply a pleasure to hear. I especially enjoy the second half of the CD starting with Joe's version of "Eleanor Rigby", "Be My Number Two", and "Home Town". I never write reviews, but this is such a great CD that it seemed appropriate. I have been listening to Joe Jackson recordings for over 25 years and this CD is one of his best!!!

4 out of 5 stars well played and well arranged collection of Jackson oddities.......2005-06-01

I enjoy this cd and listen to it periodically, though I am not that excited by it to tell you the truth. It is a pretty good cd and if you happen to find it you will like it because the songs are well played and all the musicians are very good in the stripped down trio format. i am not a big fan of Jackson personally though; I was fairly put off when he said "normally I hate bass solos..." on this cd. He seems a little hypocritical, sort of like Elvis Costello. If that kind of style sounds good to you though, definitely get this if you find it. His best stuff is on the 2 cd best of collection, so this isn't a definitive release obviously. There is no guitar, so only expect piano music that is very well arranged.

5 out of 5 stars The best Joe Jackson album I own.......2005-01-01

This is an outstanding album, one of the best I own. Personally I'm a big fan of piano based singer/songwriters, and after listening to this live album of Jackson with the sparse arrangement of a piano, bass and drums, it's clear he's one of the best there is. His playing is a mixture of rock and jazz, without any pedal or fudged notes. There's some fantastic covers as well. He swings from a Duke Ellington cover ('Mood Indigo') to a sparse Beatles cover ('Eleanor Rigby') then onto a brilliant Steely Dan number ('King of the World').

For those who are piano players this is also a great album to listen to. It may not be clear to people who don't play piano, but listening to Jackson with a trained ear... the guy can really play. In contrast to the sparse shuffles of Randy Newman and the pedal-heavy slamming of Ben Folds and Elton John, Jackson rises to the top. And he's got a great voice too.

This is a great replay album too, so buy it and wear it out.

To judge by the impassioned responses to her debut album Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church has already set extraordinary expectations for any follow-up. After all, the vocal phenomenon from Cardiff, Wales, took up a place in The Guinness Book of Records as the youngest artist ever--at the tender age of 12--to have an album attaining No. 1 status on the classical charts. This self-titled second release will continue to delight the highly gifted singer's legions of fans, and also contains some surprises for them. Church here tries out classical repertory with Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" and the "Jewel Song"--her pure and high-flying voice showing an amazing agility. There is great warmth in a couple of sacred songs, as well as the traditional Irish "She Moved Through the Fair." Church's vocal color--almost like a boy soprano at times--brings something unique to Gershwin's "Summertime," while the first track--Danny Beckerman's Hallmark-ish "Just Wave Hello"--seems destined to become part of the music you can't avoid associating with the turn of the millennium. --Sarah Chin

I had heard that Charlotte church might consider to go back to her classical roots, but give her time, I mean I dont like it when the press say you must do this and that, the poor girl has been through alot, I will give her 100% in all that she does, she is an inspiration to me, and she had a voice that had potential and was very beautiful,it she does decide to go back to doing opera, it would be good to hear hard rock music in the background while she sings sweetly, and always it would be wonderful if she could do something a bit unusual, for example with the song that she sang at 13 which is "Just wave hello, and if she sings it now with an opera voice it would be wonderful, while rock music is in the song, but it would be good if the msic of the song could be reversed, i mean to have rock in the beining and then opera at the end, its just my suggestion, I wish her all the best in the future, and she tells me that she wants to be a opera singer in the near future which is a long long way away, good luck my dear, your no top 1 fan Jamie Cox

(I wish the press would back off)but i still remember a little welsh girl of 13 who sang sweetly and had showed respect to God, I am a catholic, it would be wonderful to meet you one day Charlotte, my best friend, if you are reading this,my dear, good luck to you.

Where, has charlotte church gone, very downhill i would imagine, I was a huge charlotte church fan, i always thought the world of her, her voice was so sweet, full and bright, and the image that she represented was about a young lady in a cathedral who loved her God and never questioned anyone even the Priests, she has gone down the river of no return, for someone who had such wonderful talent, when you come to think of it, what a waste she recorded it on junk, and I hope she will make peace with pope bendict because I think he is just wonderful, there be must be something to clear up her name,I used to love her, but after reading one revierwer which said to boycott her music, i was very shoscked, because i always thought she was brought up properly, anyway I feel to boycott and let prayer back into my life for the comming years ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic music of the period.......2003-05-19

I've listened to this cd many times. I am still not tired of it. Yes, in a sense the music is coarse, but that's the kind of music it is - lusty, bawdy, and expressive of an era of high spirits. And that's the way these songs are sung. These are essentially 17th century tavern songs and are sung by people who obviously know what they're singing. These songs should be enjoyed with a flask of beer or a jug of wine.

1 out of 5 stars To sum it up: YUCK.......2000-07-03

Who could complain about the fabulous tunes published by Playford... wonderful melodies and truly timeless. Unfortunately, here they are performed in a coarse and unmusical way. This "City Waites" ensemble is NOT the same one that recorded the wonderful "Pills to purge melancholy" of Thomas D'Urfey. The singing here is harsh and badly out of tune. There is scant use of instruments to make up for it or cover it up. Of my set of uncounted CDs, this is one of about 3 that I have listened to only a few times- I literally can't sit through it.
