This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

If you are looking for just one solid collection of memorable movie themes, this is it. Other CDs mix marches and fanfares with quieter tracks, which makes for a jarring listening experience at times. This CD, however, has a consistent feel all the way through. Melodic, calming, and, best of all, interesting. These movie tracks weren't selected simply for their sound, but also because they are GOOD. You get the best of the best: James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Edelman.

This CD is absolutely one of the best of Eric Kunzel! I have a passion for movie scores/soundtracks and i must say he did a really good job on this. Listen to this and close your eyes and you'll find yourself immersed in the movies from which the music was taken from. I had my friends listen to this and they all got copy or will get a copy. If you're into this kind of music, believe me you'll keep on playing it, again and again.

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

This Original Carolina Beach Music CD is one of the best around. I have purchased most of the 10 CDs in this series and they are all good, but this is probably my favorite. It is loaded with 3 really good Beach Music medleys. The Soul Medley by the Fabulous Kays is an all time great that also features Archie Bell. A super 9 song medley produced very well and gets you into that Beach Music party spirit. The tracks by Steve Jarell and the Sons of the Beach are good to hear again, from "I've Still Got Sand In My Shoes" to "Carolina Man". Pure Beach Music at its best. This is also a great value... I recommend it. The Bill Deal and The Rondells cuts will remind you once again that Beach Music can be the new Alternative Music for those of us who appreciate fun music.

Their haunting post-punk come down sounds are likened to Tricky, Portishead and Joy Division. This 1994 reissue through Crepuscle features 25 tracks including 4 bonus tracks, 'Final Day', 'Radio Silents', 'Cakewalking' & 'Ode To Booker T.'. Pias. 2003.

I know kind of a cheesy title. The Young Marble Giants does have a drum machine instead of an actual drummer. Maybe some of the cheesiest sounds on any one of my albums, or so I thought at first. After a while you do look past this, and the songs become really infectious w/ drum beats and a droopy bass in a few of the songs.
Young Marble Giants was a post-punk U.K. indie band that started in 1978. They put out 3 songs on a compilation titled "Is the War Over?" After a year or so they were on the Rough Trade label. The original album contained 15 songs, but this the more expanded release has 25 tracks including songs from their Testcard EP. YMG features the Moxham brothers and the soothing melodically cool voice of Alison Statton. Who provides really relaxed, chilling laid back vocals; Un-emotional words at times although the words were written by one of the other band members- Stuart Moxham. YMG recorded "Colossal Youth" in four days.
They have a simplicity rhythmic drum sound that sounds like something toy soldiers would march to, a pretty cool beat put to instrumental "evening" soft music. Very bare & personal, simple, but pure uncluttered sound. A joy to listen to. Something to tap your foot to; but not considered "danceable."
Influences include Kraftwerk, David Bowie, Eno, Velvet Underground, among others. Also a favorite of the late Kurt Cobain. And Hole's Courtney Love covered "Credit in the Straight World." Not that Hole does the song justice. The original remains the best. My favorites include: "Include Me Out" - "Constantly Changing" - "Music for Evenings" - "Choci Loni" - & "Brand New Life" Definitely an album I enjoy a little more with each listen!

I was introduced to Colossal Youth by a guy who was actually called Spike. At least one, and possibly both of us, was wearing too much makeup. But even though Spike and I did not live happily ever after, I am happy to report that Colossal Youth has stood the test of time.

Sad to report but true, I am still searching for Mr Right, although the days of waiting up half the night for him have long gone.

5 out of 5 stars No album like this. Oddly appeals to most punx I know. A masterpiece.......2006-01-11

I love CD reissues putting together 7"s or 12"s or live or demo material with an album from the old days of punk. This is, I believe, all the material the band released from what I remember, this album plus 2 7"s. Is this punk? No. It's like punk's nice sister or something. There's a calm, a centered peace that me and my punk friends back in the early 80's found in this album that didn't, and hasn't since, come from any other source.

The sorta haunting, but not in a negative feeling at all, manner in which the sweet gal vocals and the backing of the distinctly different guitar and whatever else it is in that minimalist sound they make, man, I just can't get enough. I loved this album and the (what was it, 1 or 2 7"s? I forget) back then and I continue to enjoy it just as much 26 years later.

The gal and the main guy did another album like 10 years ago or something. Shades of this but not nearly it at all. Oh well.
There was also like a follow up band that came out soon after YMG broke up. I forget the name. Again, it was shades of YMG but not much more. Nice effort but that original magic just wasn't replicated.

They toured the U.S. about 1981 or so. Played a Berkeley gig that was broadcast on the radio and that tape made it around tape traders over the years. If I'm not mistaken they did a Peel Session too.

All I wish is they did more of the same and that I'd seen them live. At least there's a live CD and a live DVD out now. That's cool. chrisbct@hotmail.com

I know there are enough reviews here raving about this album, but I wanted to share this story. I received a copy of this album on a cassette tape from a friend when I lived in europe. He had gotten a copy from some friends of his who had escaped Poland during the upheaval more than a decade ago. They had left Poland literally with the clothes on their backs and a handful of items. One of those items was this album. If that isn't a testiment of how hooked on this music you can get, I don't know what is. When still living in europe I made a couple of copies of this tape so the original wouldn't wear out. I didn't have the money to buy the CD or the player to play it on. I was going through some stuff the other day and came across the forgetten tape and had that "Just got to get the CD" feeling and can't wait for it to arrive.

Colossal Youth is one of those rare gems that not only stands the test of time but remains as fresh as the day it was released. This is in no small part due to its remarkable simplicity and originality. With a basic line up of just bass, guitar, vocals and not much else the Young Marble Giants create a most satisfying sound. While many of us argue about what is and isn't worthy of inclusion in the top 50 or 100 albums of all time few include this album and yet it is top 5 material. Do yourself a favour if you have stumbled across this review by mistake or you set out to find YMG don't leave without placing your order. You will not be dissappointed.

I liked this album, but i feel that it doesn't come close to Hebron's gate, their previous effort. I can't get beyond the background vocals, which draw the attention away from the solid grooves driving the song. They are a distraction and feel self-conscious to me. There's a reason they're called Background vocals.

Having said that, this is one solid band, and Hebron's Gate has been one of my favorites for the last couple of years. I love the jazz influences, and the feel to the songs, funky and profound at the same time. I was disappointed by this album, although there a re a couple of songs I listen to steadily, so the underpinnings are strong, but the window dressing distracts.

I'm a little troubled by most of the reviews that I've seen for Groundation. It seems that all of these "real reggae fans" have overlooked the fact that this album is average at best. Bob, Steel Pulse, Midnite, Luciano, Don Carlos, we could go on forever, there is just too much GOOD reggae out there. Unfortunately "We Free Again" and everything else I've heard from Groundation just does not live up to the hype you'll see here in these reviews. Seriously, even John Brown's Body is better. Check out Midnite's RAS MEK PEACE if you want to hear some REAL reggae. I mean if you like Groundation, you'll wet your pants when you hear Midnite.

5 out of 5 stars Groundation delivers again.......2005-10-17

I just got this album a couple of days ago and was wondering how good of an answer they'd have to Hebron Gate. This album is incredible at first listen. They stepped up the tempos overall, especially from earlier stuff off Young Tree, and the rest of the instrumentation runs with the intense drumming/percussion. The guest vocals are outstanding, they really shine on the title track "We Free Again" which is already a favorite tune. "Music Is The Most High" is another sick, sick tune. Harrison Stafford really knows how to worship the king of reggae while holding his own unique voice at the same time. Groundation still holds true to their own roots as well as the roots of reggae. This album reminds me of Survival, but with much better instrumentation. Buy Hebron Gate, then this album, and you'll have two legendary reggae albums in my opinion.

I had to edit this review from awhile back to make mention of two other albums by Groundation -- Upon The Bridge and Each One Teach One. I think both are better than this album which is why I'd change the 5 stars to 4 if possible. That being said this is still a very good album. That being said, you should just go ahead and buy every Groundation album. They won't disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Solid roots, dissonant deviations.......2005-05-28

Windows of deep Groundation roots frequent this album, but are punctuated by occassionally dissonant, sometimes even frantic tracks that qualify We Free Again, as a whole, a deviation from Groundation's more roots-grounded past works. To the roots listener's experienced ear, this album ranges territory that affords an interesting and attention demanding listen. The pace varies widely between tracks, shifting from deep swinging roots to hihgly tense stepping. Musicianship throughout is typically excellent, and the recording boasts the usual warm, analog sound. Lead vocals will continue to please or displease according to taste, and back up vocals are smooth so smooth. A worthy purchase to be sure, but not entirely an album to chill to. Perhaps an accurate musical portrait of our times.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, but not for beginners.......2005-05-21

I recently discovered Groundation and gambled on Hebron Gate, having only read reviews of their music. I am now a total fan. About a month after getting Hebron I ordered We Free Again. The first time I heard it, it leveled me. I cannot even think of what to compare it to. It is certainly roots, and has the great musicianship and vocals that I associate with the group. But this album seeks to take reggae to a new level.

You will not find too many sing alongs here. The music is driving with many twists and turns, rhythm and pace changes, and the vocals are more of a chant - a continuos dialogue rather than the traditional verse, verse, chorus, verse format.

Ever wondered what it would have been like if Hendrix jammed with Parliament, or Robert Johnson got to sit in with Led Zepplin? Well this made me think "What if Burning Spear did an album with Yes." Ok, it may not be that far out, but there are many Progressive Rock elements here. There are also some incredibly heavy lyrics and some of the best drumming moments I have ever heard on a reggae disk!

It's a truly wonderful recording, but if you are not familiar with Groundation, it is not the one I would get first. Start with an earlier more traditional album and once you have become hooked, order this one.

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career,and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China,the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer,which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original,worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Some of broadway's best singers are on this album, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debbie Gravitte, Marin Mazzie, and Rebecca Luker. (The cd is worth buying for Rebecca Luker's song alone!) The songs are beautifully orchestrated and sung. Most are light hearted and fun, leaving me with a good feeling when listening.
If you're a fan of broadway showtunes, I believe you'll enjoy this album.
