Zeke & The Wheel
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In the '70s the word outlaw came to define a genre of country that mixed rock and honky-tonk with some folk lyricism and more than a little hard and fast living. R.B. Morris, a Knoxville singer-songwriter (and published poet and playwright), updates the Outlaw approach with an ambitious concept album that often roars like a resurrected junkyard V-8 (thanks to roots-rock producer R.S. Field and guitarist Kenny Vaughan) but mostly meditates soulfully on the human urge for freedom, whether in the form of moonshiners, prophets, bandits, poets, or lovers. Though woven together by a common thread of lawlessness, each of Morris's songs stands well on its own, especially the radiant "Lest We All Lose" (which sounds like a fine, lost country-soul single). Morris deserves a wider audience, not only from fans of gutsy singer-songwriters like Ray Wylie Hubbard and Bruce Springsteen, but from anyone interested in the best that alternative country has to offer. --Roy Kasten

Fitting title.......2005-01-16
Few bands have done so much for punk rock in the 90s as Zeke have. The second greatest punk album of the decade, second only to the New Bomb Turks' incredible debut "Destroy-Oh-Boy!", one of the greatest albums ever. The closest thing from the past ten years to resemble traditional hardcore punk. The album reminds me somewhat of the love child of Slayer and the Ramones. I really have to get more albums by Zeke. Hey, they even manage to make Kiss bearable for me!
pure mirth.......2004-06-26
I love this album, it's just fun to listen to. Never have i heard something so hardcore, that at the the same time actually sounds happy, catchy, and full of wonder, Why didn't this band do any better. You talk about underground, and no respect well than you have to mention zeke. I looked a long time for my copy of this album, and eventually had to settle for buying off of amzon, because there is almost no other way of getting your hands on it.
Regardless, iv'e listened the hell out of this cd and id recomend it to any true punk fan.
Rock'n'roll for lovers of cheap beer.......2004-05-28
This is absolutely the best release from the timeless Zeke. 17 songs in 20 minutes, and not a dud in there. Nobody else can throw verses, choruses, and tight solos into a song like Zeke...or at least, no one that can get there as fast. Zeke does all that in quick 45 second bursts like "Rodney" and "Goggle Boy." Buy this.
CRAZY.......2003-05-06
craziest guitarist in the world (he's better than jimi hendrix i swear), like in the beginning of evil dead and now you die. good energy filled vocals and drums, the whole band is good what can i say. pure old school hardcore punk at it's best (at leasy today) i really like the guitarist though he's amazing....
GREAT BAND.......2000-02-20
ZEKE is awesome, i escpescially like the album before this, super sound racing, it is awesome, but this is also a great ZEKE recording, they played a show in my home town of Minot, North Dakota, and let me tell you, it kicked ass

Album Description
A shotgun marriage of punks' get-up n go sneer with rock-n-roll's down and dirty side, ZEKE's early material is the stuff of legend. The music is less songs than stripped down, juiced up blasts of adrenaline stuffed with drill-sergeant vocals, break-neck drumming, and blistering solos. There is no fluff and no margin for error, just relentless energy and maximum attitude. Like a giant middle finger in the face of fashion, Super Sound Racing exhibit all the full-throttle, fast-n-furious rock action that is ZEKE's calling card. Super Sound Racing is remastered and repackaged for an even more wild ride. Ride with ZEKE!

"Just like the razorback, don't be a thorn in my sack.".......2005-08-11
If Pig Destroyer's "Prowler in the Yard" was the reason the gods created rock then Zeke's "Death Alley" is the reason they invented fist pumping.
Woooooo! Sometimes I get so excited when I'm listening to "Death Alley" in the ol' Yugo I headbutt the windshield, naw on the stearing wheel and start flaying my arms around quicker than ENTER THE DRAGON in fast-forward!
Seriously though if you like rockin' out hard and I mean HARD then you can't go wrong with this cd. It never gets old, every song is rock perfection. Zeke's best cd.
Good Album, But Slayer still is the best!.......2003-07-28
I admit I am a Slayer fan of at least 12 years. Upon the reviews on this board, I bought this album in hope of something so crazy, so extreme, so goulish, so haunting, that I would put my slayers cds down for this album. It did not happen, at all. Zeke is good, fast, and agressive, but not even close to slayer.
UNREAL.......2003-06-20
THIS CD IS AMAZING. AFTER THINKING REIGN IN BLOOD WAS THE ULTIMATE IN THRASH, I STAND CORRECTED.THIS AINT PUNK!THIS CD IS SICK.THERE`S NO RIDICULOUS MAKE UP. NO SNARLS .NO FAKERY. IF YOU CANT FIGURE OUT THAT ZEKE IS ACTUALLY 4 DEVILS PLAYING THESE INSTUMENTS.WELL THEN GO ROCK OUT WITH metallica or bon jovi since they BOTH BASICALLY SOUND THE SAME.IF YOU ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ANY OF THESE POSER BANDS DO YOURSELF A FAVOR DONT LISTEN TO ZEKE'''''YOU WILL BE EMBARASSED!!!!!!ALL HAIL THE NEW KINGS OF MAYHEM '''''ZEKE!!!!!!!!
Zeke's newest and best.......2002-02-26
Blazing riffs, machine-gun drumming, screaming mad vocals... everything a truely great punk record should be made of. Tracks such as "Nightrider" and "Crossroads" show Zeke as a progressive outfit exploring new grounds with speed-metalish melodies and solos, whereas "Live Wire", "Eyes of Satan", and "Mountain Man" (among others) are reminiscent of the devastatingly headbangable likes of earlier Zeke albums.
Only two minor complaints: 1) Zeke really need to make longer albums, and 2) I liked Blind Marky's more raspy tone of voice he had on "Dirty Sanchez". He takes a slightly smoother approach here.
This isn't to say the album doesn't render weakling wannabe punk groups like Blink 182 and Good Charlotte utterly worthless, because it does. Buy it and rock on.
Zeke Rules, OK?!.......2001-11-03
The much-anticipated "Death Alley" is, in the opinion of this 6 year Zeke fan, the finest Zeke album yet. Not since "Flat Tracker" have they captured the essence and power of Zeke so well in a recording. The songs here incorporate a new-found metal influence that adds harmony guitars, lyrics about Satan and horror movies, and even more guitar solos to the songs. Visions of vintage Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Slayer, and Venom come to mind when listening to this album.
Now that's not to say that they aren't the same old Zeke we all know and love. There's still that 1,000mph whirlwind of motorcycles and rock n' roll that has always defined Zeke. It's more like they just re-discovered some old records that had been collecting dust and decided to let it show on this album.
Stand-out tracks include rippers such as "Crossroads," "Jack Torrance," "Evil Dead," "Arkansas Man," "Mountain Man," "The River," "Night Rider," "Into the Night," "On the Run," "Road Ahead," "Eyes of Satan," and "Death Alley." Yes, I know that's most of the track list! Zeke venture into some new territory with the slower (for Zeke) paced metal tune "Evil Woman" and the flat out rocker "Road Ahead." These songs show a new found maturity and adventurous spirit in a band that has often been accused of being a one trick pony.
Of course I should mention the performances of the band members themselves: Mark of the Beast (aka Marky Felchtone) has toned down the screaming from "Dirty Sanchez" and is back to his older style of "singing" and his guitar solos are crazier than ever; Abe "Sonny" Zanuel Riggs III pulls out some leads, too and riffs like a man possesed; Donny Paycheck somehow plays faster than he has in the past, and shows that he's learned a few new moves, too; Diamond Jeff Matz, the latest addition to Zeke, proves to be the most worthy successor to the Zeke bass throne and his influence and playing have definitely helped to usher in the best and most creative line-up in Zeke's almost 10 year history.
If you've ever been a fan of Zeke in the past, do yourself a favor and pick up "Death Alley." You won't be disappointed.

Zeke is a lot like the New Christy Minstrels--they're both bands. The similarities end right there as Seattle's most whiplash-happy hardcore unit whips out their Dirty Sanchez and lays waste to the idea of a quiet evening or, at the very least, a quiet 22 minutes. That's right--16 songs in 22 minutes. There are no tedious "getting to know you" intros or verses without curses. Dirty Sanchez is every parent's nightmare, evidenced in lyrics like "Go ahead get real high / puke up until you die." Frontman Blind Marky Felchtone's rapid delivery renders these and other lyrics as translatable as Swahili, but band mates Abe, Mark, and Donny punch out enough superchug snarl to satiate the spikiest of the mohawk set. The whole assault is capped off by a quick but beefy cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon," although the track listing promises "My Way." Zeke's middle finger is showing... quite proudly. --Jason Josephes

A short review.......2006-05-23
In honor of the brevity of most of the songs on "Dirty Sanchez," I've decided to keep my review brief. The songs are extremly short, extremely fast, and extremely intense in every way. It redeems rock and roll in so many ways. If that doesn't appeal to you, go die you hippie scum.
Probably the best thing that Epitaph ever put out........2004-04-15
How did Zeke ever get signed to the label anyway? Well, you won't hear any third-rate Bad Religion/NOFX clone music, just rippin' hardcore punk with great fast riffs. They even managed to make a Fleetwood Mac song kick ass (there's an unlisted cover of "Rhiannon" at the end of the CD).

"freewheeling abandon" - LA WEEKLY
Celebrated rock outlaws ZEKE set the cruise control to "white hot" on their Relapse debut, 'Til the Livin' End. A relentless ride of rock & roll abandon, ZEKE's 'Til the Livin' End mixes punk nihilism with a hard hitting metal extravagance. 'Til the Livin' End burns from start to finish, as super charged guitars, electrifying leads and a raucous punk attitude race full throttle down a highway to Hell. Thank the gods of rock & roll, you've just met your new favorite band.
Customer Reviews:
not my favorite but still Zeke.......2006-11-15
I like this CD and everything Zeke has ever done but I have to admit it is my least favorite. It is maybe slightly too polished and more heavy metal/less punk than previous releases. I would recomend buying it but after reading all the other reviews giving it raves I was just wondering if anyone else still longed for the old "Runnin Shine" sound of their earlier albums?
ALBUM OF THE YEAR - EVERY YEAR!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-29
When Death Alley was released, I was so pumped, I listened to it practically every day. Not too long afterwards, I heard that the almighty Zeke broke up, and I was crushed. Where was I going to get more of my mandatory daily recommended allowance of ROCK? It was a dark time for rock and roll, since the two greatest rock and roll bands of their time (Zeke and The Hookers) were no more. Many faithful followers were lost. Many others kept the faith. Then came the great news.....ZEKE WAS BACK!
'TIL THE LIVING END easily surpassed their previous efforts, proving once again that rock and roll will never die! I didn't think it was possible to top Death Alley - such blasphemy! This album brings the rock to the people and shoves it down their throats. Combining the perfect blend of Motorhead and The Supersuckers (at their best), 'Til The Living End never lets you down. It's the gift that keeps on giving. If you can find the 2 disc special edition version of this album, your eyes and ears will thank you. The 2nd disc is a bonus DVD full of live footage from 3 cities as well as footage from on the road. If you don't buy this album you will be cursed to an eternity of being forced to listen to nothing but Yoko Ono and David Hasselhoff albums.
That 70's Zeke Show.......2005-06-15
The interesting thing about Zeke is they always manage to sneak in some big change to their sound almost every album yet keep true to their core. The big change on this album is the clear movement into Motorhead territory with some sprinkles of stoner rock thrown in there. There's a new low end fuzz to the guitars that you've never heard on other Zeke albums. This gives this album an admirably beefy sound, particularly on the mid-paced cuts, but sacrifices that sense of controlled fury in previous efforts.
The three most blatant examples of this new sound are "Little Queen", "Dragonfly" and "Dolphenwulf". "Little Queen" is vintage Motorhead to the T. Marky even howls like Lemmy, heightening the effect as much as the Wurzel like solo. "Dragonfly" and "Dolphenwulf" sound like they could have been directly lifted from a Monster Magnet/Orange Goblin album. This is a bit different as in the past it's been hard to say Zeke sounded like anyone (with maybe the obvious exception of Speedealer on Dirty Sanchez) but there's some clear comparisons here. I have to say I don't mind it though, maybe because I'm a huge fan of the bands most directly influencing this record.
I've also thought Zeke is at their strongest when they slow it down a little which is the prevailing approach on this record. Yes I appreciate the blindingly fast cuts of albums past but the real fist pumping sing alongs that rule their live show have always been songs like "Daytona". My one gripe with this record, and the reason it's not my fav Zeke album, is they've also always held a special place in my heart for that go-for-broke, balls to the wall, "Kicked In The Teeth" sound. On this record there's a few faster paced cuts that smolder but nothing that really burns like the glories of past records. So while I think this is a great album and one that ranks high in the Zeke discography, I'd still have to give the nod to Death Alley as the best combination of the two sides of the Zeke coin.
Check out more reviews at ohboydestroy.
true punk rock played with actual talent.......2005-03-21
Zeke is one of those bands that I've always read about and seen their CD's and heard about them from other people, but I've never actually heard their music. unfortunately, I kinda formed a premature opinion of them before actually hearing them. they always seemed like a Nirvana or Green Day ripoff band to me. but recently I was lucky enough to see them live opening for Corrosion Of Conformity & Motorhead and I have to be honest, they really blew me away. they were nothing like I thought they would be. I immediately went out and bought 'Til The Living End, and I love it. these guys not only play punk rock really well, but they are way better than 90% of all the other so-called punk bands in this day and age. they have alot of talent. the guitarist can f*cking shred, man. its not just super-fast, sloppy, 4 chord songs that last 2 minutes. its so much more than that. these guys inject some bluesy heavy rock into their punk sound to spice it up, and it works. god damn, these guys realy cook.
'Til the Livin' End is Gold!.......2004-04-07
First of all, there's no such thing as a bad Zeke album. They all KICK ASS!
Well, I was down at the record store the other day and I noticed some fool had decided to give up his copy of Dirty Sanchez... it was sitting there in the used section. Why anyone would part with their copy of that album is beyond me. But imagine my surprise when I saw lying there behind it, an advance review copy of 'Til the Livin' End. Now I had already placed my order for the one with the DVD but I couldn't wait so I bought another copy on the spot. NO REGRETS.
Zeke just gets better and better. More or less picking up where Death Alley left off, Til the Livin End rips right out of the starting gate with 700 horse power... as usual.
Donny, Marky and Jeff have only gotten better with time (if that's even possible), playing faster, harder, tighter than ever. It's nice to hear Diamond Jeff shining through on a few more tracks on this one. The songs are super charged and extremely well composed but without the slightest hint of softening up or slowing down.
Til the Livin End is just another jewel in the rock crown worn by Zeke. Five stars is not enough.
Now, if you're new to Zeke, you might want to start with Kicked In The Teeth or Death Alley. But as far as I'm concerned, every Zeke album is a five star album.
Can't wait to get my DVD edition. Can't wait to see Zeke on the East Coast again.
750cfm is gold!

Product Description
Jeff Rolka is the genuine article. His debut record Dandelion alluded to it, Somewhere in the Fade proves it in resounding style. Jeffs growth as a writer is evident in every song, from the cynical Every Little Thing, to the sweet and Beatlesque Return to Me, his new found mastery of words and sounds is apparent from the first track. The sonic pallette is widely expanded through the use of some of San Franciscos finest studio musicians and the adept work of his co-production partner Andrew Griffin. In many respects this record is incomparable to his first; louder, softer, more vulnerable and also more confident. Jeff has proven himself honest to a fault, and the stories of heart break, infidelity and redemption are enough to make anyone feel sorry for the guy. Strangely enough though, that sentiment is never evoked. Here is a writer whos sharing his stories, crooning his laments, and non-judgementally opening his heart to anyone who will listen. Storytelling reminiscent of Townes Van Zandt, writing like the Beatles and Wilco, and a voice like an angel, that can scream and whine like the Devil himself, Jeff Rolka has something for everyone and is worth keeping on eye on as he continues to mature.

Customer Reviews:
Why ain't this guy famous?.......2002-11-06
The poor guy who made a coaster out of this CD would probably never have done that if he had listened to the CD more than once or twice. I have to admit R.B. Morris went over my head on my first listen and I might have done the same with the CD if I hadn't taken the advice of a friend.
My friend said, "R.B. Morris is a genius."
So, I played the CD again and really listened. Man, this guy really is a genius! Thank God I didn't make a caoster out of my copy. I play that CD over and over and over, and each time I see with greater depth the true profundity of this artist's imagery. Every listen is like peeling back a new layer of emotional expression which leaves me haunted with the message in his mood for hours afterward. It's just so damn clever, but at the same time, so honest, so real...so brilliant. There is a poet of the highest caliber lurking under this persona of a beer drinking, wandering bard.
For example, there is a song that says there is a still (like a moonshine still) inside each of us that produces our own elixer of life so why do we need a distillery to come in and take it over and tell us what to believe? Who would have thought spirituality was like a liquor still? Who would have compared the church to a distillery? R.B. Morris does and he makes such a notion so clear that I can feel the vapors in my very soul.
I think I'll have a little nip by playing that CD again right now.
Discover this man!.......2000-12-30
R.B. Morris is a fine example of just how good you can be and how little airplay you can get. Damn Shame. This album (beautifully produced by R.S. Field) is full of top-notch songwriting and great sonic scapes. The guitar players produce some fabulous riffs and textures, to boot. Buy it, I say, buy it now... and look for R.B. on the road... he's always out there.
Stellar Follow-up to Take That Ride.......1999-12-23
Redemption, whether personal, communal, or global, is the theme that loosely ties Morris's latest collection of songs together, and it is a theme that suits Morris's songwriting. In this case, redemption is not necessarily religious, and even on those songs where the lyrics stray into religious territory (Someone Was Listenin', Lest We All Lose), it is clear that Morris is not content to wait for salvation to come from some omniscient being in the sky.
The ongoing human struggle to treat each other with respect and dignity is the backdrop for Morris's mini-dramas, as reflected in the lyrics from Maybe the Soul: Maybe the soul can still be pure/ I'd like to think it's true/ There's something there for sure/ But I ain't got a clue/ There's laws of man, and laws of God/ and laws of nature too/ There's judges everywhere you look/ But they're all outlaws too.
Musically, Morris retains his same eclectic stylings, moving from bouncy pop to hard rock, and on through gospel, folk, and blues with ease. (There's even a Christmas song!) If anything, the songs on this album demonstrate a greater comfort with blending different styles within the same song, rather than simply jumping into different styles in each song (although there are stll some awkward transitions). All in all, an excellent album, and a must for anyone who likes intelligent lyrics coupled with catchy musical hooks.

Like an audio fist fight.......2007-01-17
This album should come with a jock strap. Because it shows up at your house, kicks you in the balls and leaves 20 minutes later. No matter how big you are, this album will take you down.
ZEKE dont sell out........2005-04-20
No they dont. Donny Paycheck will guarantee smashing the piss out of his drums every show. Zeke is my all time favorite Punk rock band but who gives a damn about me. I hate that. I race cars and i guess they do too, but they drive Hemis. And that picture is most likely a 67-69 Camaro with a big block chevy engine. Relapse is one of my favorites of many including, Now you die, Out of love, lets go, and Mainline. This band wont let you down, they crush every instrument. Blind Marky is a true genius of Punk. He sings of pain, drugs, speed, violence, love, hate. And he aint messing round. This band is 4REAL.
This is the best album by zeke.......1999-03-27
I like the new one, but this one is better... I saw em live once and they were gracious enough to pull the heroine needles out of their arms long enough to play two or three dozen of their fastest songs at twice the speed at which they were recorded... oh my god! They are dirty and scrawny little grunge lookin guys, but they are all punk. They got in a fight after the show (the fight almost started during the set). Go see them if you get a chance and pick this up if you like bands like the Dwarves.

i liked super sound racing better.......2007-04-07
thats pretty much it, i liked super sound racing better. this still gets five stars because everything that zeke does gets five stars. zeke taking the bus - five stars. zeke buying vegitables at the market - five stars. zeke folding laundry - five stars. see what i mean. but anyway, flat tracker gets five stars because zeke did it. but zeke did it better on super sound racing.
A blast.......2006-09-22
I realize there are a lot of bands playing speed punk out there, and it may be hard to see why you should listen to Zeke. But Mr. Felchtone writes the most elegant melodies I've ever heard -- as brilliant as Nirvana's, only compressed into 20 seconds of pure joy. There's no way you can listen to this and not have fun. If you think that this might in any way be your type of music, check Zeke out.
